Ashes in India? Cricket Australia leaves door open for landmark 150th Test

Cricket Australia chief executive Todd Greenberg has said the board would be open to exploring the possibility of staging the landmark 150th anniversary Ashes Test in India, underlining the growing importance of the Indian market to world cricket. Australia and England are scheduled to play a one-off Test in March next year to commemorate 150 years of the historic Ashes rivalry. While there are no current plans to take the match outside Australia, Greenberg admitted the idea of hosting it in India could be considered in the future. His comments come at a time when Cricket Australia is expanding its footprint in India. This December, the Big Bash League will stage a match in Chennai, where Melbourne Renegades will face Perth Scorchers, marking another step in bringing Australian cricket closer to Indian fans. The prospect of an Ashes Test in India also reflects the commercial significance of the country’s cricket market. India remains the sport’s biggest audience, and hosting a marquee contest between Australia and England would generate enormous interest while creating fresh commercial opportunities. Greenberg said Cricket Australia would not rule out the idea, citing its strong ties with both the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). “We’d have to be open to consider all options,” Greenberg told the BBC’s Stumped podcast. “Our relationship with the ECB, but also the BCCI, is very strong. And clearly, there are opportunities in India to put more content into certain areas. That’s not something we are currently planning, but it would certainly be open for consideration.” India’s influence on the global cricket economy has continued to grow in recent years. The ECB, for instance, is expected to post substantial profits from the eight white-ball internationals it hosted against India recently, despite England winning six of those matches. The financial returns are expected to surpass what the board anticipates from staging both the men’s and women’s Ashes series next year. Despite his openness to the proposal, Greenberg acknowledged that scheduling a five-day Ashes Test in India would be far from straightforward. The Indian calendar is already packed with international cricket and the IPL, which is expected to begin earlier than usual next year to avoid the extreme heat towards the end of May. Finding a suitable window for another marquee event would therefore be a major challenge. “I think Test cricket between us, England and India, is still very strong, probably bucking the trend as to other parts of the world. So we want to make sure we continue to grow it and strengthen it. “The challenge for all of us in global cricket is there are only 365 days in a schedule, and we probably need another month or two if we actually can generate the content we want to,” he said.

Jermain Defoe leaves Woking two weeks before start of season after ‘eye-opening’ experience

Jermain Defoe has left Woking just two weeks before the start of the new National League season after what he described as an “eye-opening experience” at the club.

Defoe was appointed by the Surrey side in March as a surprise replacement Neal Ardley, and guided the club to a 10th-place finish after winning two of his six matches in charge.

But just a fortnight before Woking were due to begin the new campaign against Sutton United, the former England striker’s abrupt departure was confirmed with immediate effect.

“Unfortunately, circumstances have ultimately made it impossible for me to continue in the position,” Defoe said in a post on social media.

“I am extremely proud of the work undertaken during my time at the club and genuinely felt that we were building something special.

“My time at Woking FC has been an eye-opening managerial experience and one that will undoubtedly make me stronger for the next challenge in my career.”

Defoe oversaw a 1-0 friendly defeat to Braintree Town on Tuesday.

The 43-year-old scored 20 times in 57 international appearances for England and registered 162 times in the Premier League.

“We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Jermain for his contribution during his time at Woking, and we wish him every success in the future.” Woking said in a statement on the former Tottenham and West Ham forward.

Blanchard’s 57-yard field goal lifts Elks to win over Roughriders

REGINA — Vincent Blanchard kicked a 57-yard field goal on the final play of the game to lift the Edmonton Elks to an exciting 36-34 CFL victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Thursday.

The West Division-leading Elks improved to 6-1 and are off to their best start since 2017 when they were 7-0. The Riders, second in the West, slipped to 4-2 on an emotional night for the hosts.

Alex Hale kicked a pair of fourth-quarter field goals to give the Riders a late 34-33 lead.

Elks quarterback Cody Fajardo had a big night, passing for 510 yards and four touchdowns. He completed 25 of 32 passes.

The Riders took a 28-27 lead on the first play of the fourth quarter when quarterback Trevor Harris connected with Dhel Duncan-Busby on a seven-yard touchdown pass.

The Elks, however, took little time responding as Fajardo and Austin Mack connected on their second touchdown pass of the contest on Edmonton’s first play after the Saskatchewan touchdown. Mack hauled in a bomb with his fingertips and went 81 yards to give the Elks a 33-28 lead. Edmonton attempted a two-point convert but Fajardo’s pass hit the crossbar of the uprights and was incomplete.

Mack’s first touchdown was a 57-yard reception late in the third quarter that gave the Elks a 27-21 lead.

Hale closed the gap later to 33-31 with a 48-yard field goal and had an opportunity to give the Riders the lead with three minutes remaining but his attempt from 46 yards was wide left and returned to the Edmonton 20-yard line by Javon Leake.

The first half featured both quarterbacks attacking the defences with deep passes. Harris finished the half 13 of 19 for 231 yards and three touchdowns, including a 56-yard scoring toss to Kian Schaffer-Baker. Harris hit on six of 10 passes for 136 yards in the first quarter, an average of 22.5 yards per completion.

Fajardo also had a big half, completing 11 of 13 for 196 yards and two touchdowns. His longest completion was a 68-yard bomb to Kaion Julien-Grant that set up Edmonton’s second touchdown of the half.

The Riders took a 21-17 lead into the halftime break when KeeSean Johnson grabbed a two-yard touchdown pass from Harris with four seconds left. Samuel Emilus joined Schaffer-Baker and Johnson with touchdowns, scoring on an eight-yard reception early in the second quarter.

Brendan O’Leary-Orange, on a 16-yard reception, and Leake, on a 12-yard catch, scored touchdowns for the Elks in the first half.

The teams took to the field just five days after a two-vehicle crash claimed the lives of Riders linebacker Jayden Dalke and Bhishma Rajyaguru, a 22-year-old from Regina, on Sat­urday even­ing just out­side Lums­den, about 30 kilo­metres north of Regina. RCMP said the 30-year-old Dalke was driv­ing north­bound in the south­bound lane of the divided high­way when his vehicle col­lided with Rajy­aguru’s SUV.

Both victims were honoured with tributes and a moment of silence before the opening kickoff at Mosaic Stadium.

Top seed Andrey Rublev will take on Luca Van Assche in the quarterfinals of the Estoril Open 2026.

Rublev received a bye into the second round, where he faced lucky loser Timofey Skatov. The Russian was in control of the match from start to finish. He conceded only one game in each set to register a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Van Assche fought past home hope Federico Silva in three sets to reach the second round, where eighth seed Pablo Carreno Busta awaited him. The Frenchman captured the opening set courtesy of a break of serve in the fourth game, the only break in the entire set.

Carreno Busta initially led by a break in the second set but couldn’t hold on to his advantage for too long. Nevertheless, he snagged another break of serve in the 10th game to take the set.

Van Assche dealt the first blow in the third set to go 2-1 up, only for his older rival to immediately negate his upper hand in the next game. He raised his level after that and bagged the next four games on the trot for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win.

Rublev stormed to the title in Bastad last week and continued his winning ways with a dominant performance against Skatov. He improved his record for the season to 26-13 with the win, and to 16-5 on clay.

Van Assche was pushed to three sets yet again but wore down Carreno Busta in the end to reach his second quarterfinal at the ATP level this year. He has a 6-4 record on the main tour, and a 22-6 record at the Challenger level. He has won three titles on the Challenger tour this year, including one on clay.

Van Assche’s run is likely to end at this stage. He has a 0-10 career record against top 20 players. His last match against a top 20 opponent was against Rublev at the Citi DC Open a couple of years ago. While he managed to push Rublev to three sets back then, he might not be able to do so on this occasion on account of the Russian’s present form.
