Why Norfolk is the new Cornwall for the grown-up smart set: It’s more civilised, authentic – and you’re much less likely to bump into a drunken teenager!

Published

on

The village of Blakeney in Norfolk, which Sybilla compares to the London borough of Richmond

As children we would look forward to the long stretch of summer spent in Harlyn Bay in North Cornwall where we spent hours swimming and rockpooling.

We would drive down from our home in Bisley in the Cotswolds, the same village as Jilly Cooper.

And we weren’t the only ones. Cornwall was practically Cotswolds-on-Sea in those days with the whole Gloucestershire set making their way down, many of whom may have inspired some of my good friend Jilly’s characters.

Friends would come and stay and we would occasionally go to the Trevose Golf Club disco but most of the time we were knee-deep in sand and dogs – it was all very Famous Five. The adults would chat in the sand dunes with flasks of tea and watch their offspring frolic on the beach, and POSSIBLY got up to some shenanigans themselves.

Back then Harlyn Bay was referred to as ‘The Other Side’, with Polzeath and Rock being the places to be. When we got a bit older we would beg my poor mother to drive us 40 minutes (there was no ferry at night) round to The Mariner’s Pub in Rock where a bunch of blonde and shiny teens would drink until Mummy and Daddy came to collect them.

Eventually my mother gave up driving to ‘The Other Side’ and started looking into holiday rentals there instead to save her the midnight hassle. We swapped one sandy holiday cottage for another and had a whale of a time, going back year after year.

When I started having children, however, I knew it wouldn’t be long before we had to ditch this part of Posh Cornwall – I used to joke that you can’t mix infant bottles with beer bottles. It had become more and more of a party destination, which was not something I needed when I was more invested in Sudocrem than Sambuca.

We tried the south of Cornwall but got a bit put off by the adders on Kynance Cove and the jagged drops around The Lizard which looked like a recipe for broken legs (and the rest).

Plus everyone was in tears by the time we got to Bristol – Cornwall was just too far from Essex so in the end we had to ditch it.

So when I read that Polzeath is the epicentre of a real-life version of the cocktail Sex on the Beach, I felt more than a little relieved at my choice of Norfolk as a holiday destination. For Norfolk is the new Cornwall, at least among the grown-up smart set. It’s far more civilised and authentic than its southern counterpart, which has become raucous, downmarket and a bit last season.

Now that I am responsible for no fewer than three teenagers it is a blessing that we are not in Polzeath which I hear is transformed into a drunken playground by night for two weeks in July – with residents having to appoint a ‘beach ranger’ to patrol them.

Here in north Norfolk you are more likely to bump into a seal on the beach than a drunken teenager and most of the people who holiday in Cley-next-the-Sea are young families or retired people.

My children have made some friends over the years and occasionally sit in someone’s boat at night while sharing a can of Tesco Pear Cider but that is about the extent of it.

Norfolk, as I have come to realise, is just as smart as Cornwall but miles less populated. There’s no battling the crowds to find a tiny sliver of free sand to lie your towel down on, as you have to in Polzeath these days. The posh villages in Norfolk vary hugely and I find the best way to describe them is by comparison to London boroughs.

For example, Blakeney is like Richmond, well-heeled, beautiful with fantastic walks. Burnham Market is Norfolk’s version of Belgravia and has all the shops and smart restaurants.

Brancaster is Fulham, full of families and labradors walking on the beach. Burnham Overy Staithe is Chelsea-on-Sea and full of blonde teenagers wearing the same clothes messing about on boats.

Cromer is more like Hackney, Holt is Barnes and finally, Hunstanton with its famous tennis tournament is best described as Norfolk’s answer to Clapham.

The restaurants in Norfolk are a case of Rick Stein eat your heart out with The Gunton Arms near Cromer scoring high as well as The Moorings in Blakeney, and we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to nice cafes selling flat whites.

There are hidden beaches to be found at low tide with only a tern for company; mudflats that look like works of art; windmills peppering the horizon and you can almost imagine former Norfolk resident Admiral Nelson striding out of the waves towards a centuries-old watering hole.

On the beaches you will find pebbles instead of beer bottles, shells instead of discarded vapes.

And the only creatures I’ve seen copulating on Norfolk beaches are the birds.

Charity calls for ‘default’ 20mph zone within Cambridge city boundary to ‘improve road safety’

Published

on

Cambridgeshire Live

CamCycle said a default 20mph limit would improve road safety

A cycling charity has called for proposals for 20mph zones to be extended to cover all roads within Cambridge’s city boundary. Cambridgeshire County Council is currently consulting on plans to introduce new 20mph limits on roads around the city – but CamCycle wants the plans to go further.

A new Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) would see 20mph limits introduced on nearly 20 extra streets, including Queen’s Road, Northampton Street, Chesterton Road until Mitcham’s Corner, Victoria Avenue, East Road and Lensfield Road. Additional streets and sections include the Mitcham’s Corner gyratory, Corona Road, Brooklands Avenue, and the northern part of Coldhams Lane.

A county council spokesperson said of the proposals: “Over 100 people have been seriously injured across these routes since 2017. This proposal follows on from widespread engagement to put in 20mph limits on roads across Cambridge in 2024. Since then, there has been a positive response from communities to more focussed proposals for new 20mph limits in residential areas including Orchard Park.”

However, CamCycle said the charity supports a default 20mph limit within the city boundary. A spokesperson said: “Although many of the proposed routes are residential areas or routes to school, many similar routes have been omitted, including some of those that were most strongly supported for 20mph limits in the 2024 consultation.”

The charity believes the following roads should also be included:

  • Gilbert Road;
  • The eastern end of Chesterton Road;
  • Barnwell Road;
  • Long Road;
  • Hills Road south of Brooklands Avenue;
  • Victoria Road;
  • Ditton Lane.

Local resident Barney Cox, who lives near the eastern end of Chesterton Road, said he finds it “strange” that most of the road is 20mph until a small section from Mitcham’s Corner to Elizabeth Way. He said: “It’s part of the route for my child to go and play on Jesus Green and Midsummer Common, to visit his relatives and to go into town, so I’d like to see it as safe as possible.

“More broadly, I’d like to see 20mph within Cambridge for the benefits it makes to the safety of pedestrians and cyclists and, as a motorist, I appreciate having the consistency: I don’t like chopping and changing.“

Mr Cox said he lived in Islington for a long time and when a 20mph zone was introduced there he found that it felt safer. He continued: “It made driving less stressful. As a cyclist and a pedestrian and a parent, it made things less worrying. The risk of someone doing serious harm to me or my family through excess speed was greatly reduced.”

Camcycle CEO Anna Williams said: “More 20mph roads would make walking, wheeling and cycling a safer and more attractive choice for more people and create a clear and consistent environment for drivers. Around 80% of those killed or seriously injured on Cambridge’s roads each year are people walking and cycling, and moving to a default 20mph is an important step towards eliminating this unnecessary suffering.

“It’s not clear why the council, when it claims to support safer journeys for children, has so radically watered down its initial proposals, leaving many busy residential streets intimidating and dangerous. It needs to expand its ambition for the city if it wants to meet its own goal of zero deaths and injuries on our roads and help more people choose active modes of transport.”

A Cambridgeshire County Council spokesperson said: “We’re welcoming all feedback and responses during the consultation period via our online platform. We will review all responses received once the consultation has closed.”

Ariana’s appearance has come under scrutiny in recent months, especially following the release of her new music video, Petal.

She has publicly insisted that she’s healthy but that didn’t stop fans from pointing out how incredibly gaunt she looks in the violent music video.

After failing yet another audition, a group of studio bigwigs brand Ariana ‘unmarketable’, ‘unattractive’, and ‘inauthentic’, before accusing her of having a personality disorder.

‘We miss the old you,’ one tells her. ‘Maybe you could go out and find her and come back and give it another shot?’

Ariana leaves, only to return moments later with a chainsaw, which she uses to violently dismember the men.

Despite the clever social commentary in the video, many fans were more distracted by Ariana’s weight than anything else.

‘This is like looking at Karen Carpenter and everyone was like [shrug],’ wrote one fan.

‘I am actually so over us normalizing this and acting like this is okay,’ wrote a second.

‘Shocking and heartbreaking’, wrote a third, while a fourth added, ‘For the love of God, please eat something.’

Another wrote, ‘Her bones are literally popping out.’

Despite the concerned comments, other fans defended the singer and said that it was inappropriate to comment on her physical appearance.

‘If y’all actually cared about her you wouldn’t be publicly making comments about her body,’ argued one.

Ariana released her eighth studio album, Petal, on Friday.

Concerns were raised about whether Sunday In The Park With George was going ahead when ticket sales were halted earlier this summer.

At the time it was suggested that Ariana was still planning to appear in the show next summer, before later backing out.

There were said to be growing fears that Ariana, who had just kicked off her Eternal Sunshine tour in America, was ‘oversubscribed’.

Ariana, who is now back with her ex-boyfriend Ricky Alvarez, had also just split from her boyfriend of three years Ethan Slater, after meeting on the set of Wicked.

Ariana was slated to appear opposite her Wicked co-star Jonathan Bailey in her hotly anticipated West End debut at the Barbican Centre.

Concerns around her appearance in her revival of Stephen Sondheim’s show were sparked after ticket sales were delayed until autumn.

A source close to Ariana’s camp confirmed to the Daily Mail at the time: ‘There’s no doubt she’s still doing it.’

They added: ‘The show is still happening but ticket sales were pushed to September due to her touring and album release schedule.’

A source previously had told the Sun,: ‘Ariana has a lot on her plate and there are concerns she is over-subscribed.

‘It’s too risky to start flogging tickets until it’s all locked down. It will be a demanding production with eight shows a week.’

Ariana proved her acting chops after playing Glinda in the two-part film adaptation of Wicked, opposite Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba.

She will also take to the small screen in the 13th series of American Horror Story.

Ariana appears to be shifting her focus to acting despite her current tour as she told fans: ‘I’m very excited to do this small tour. But I think it might not happen again for a long, long time.’

MP Carla Lockhart posted about the incident on social media saying that ’51 cattle were destroyed by shooting’ and that witnesses described scenes ‘like the Wild West’

Stormont Agriculture Minister Andrew Muir has ordered an external review of the killing of a number of cattle outside Fivemiletown, Co Tyrone.

The minister said he would engage with MLAs in relation to the intervention by his department.

DUP MP Carla Lockhart posted about the incident on social media saying that “51 cattle were destroyed by shooting” and that witnesses described scenes “like the Wild West”.

Ms Lockhart also said that “confidence in the department has taken a real hit because of the way this operation was handled”.

Chairman of Stormont’s agriculture committee, UUP MLA Robbie Butler, said he had written to the department “seeking urgent answers on the reasons for the cull, procedures followed, animal welfare assessment and other issues”.

Mr Muir recognised that animal welfare is an “important issue for the people of Northern Ireland”.

“I fully appreciate the concerns expressed following the euthanasia of cattle near Fivemiletown, undertaken following a court order,” he said.

“I want to reassure everyone that I and my chief veterinary officer take those concerns very seriously.

“Engagement with the UFU and the USPCA to hear their concerns is already planned and a review of the circumstances surrounding the intervention is also being taken forward.

“To provide assurance and ensure that the circumstances and context in which the actions of veterinary staff took place is more fully understood and any lessons for the future identified, I have now determined that this review must be taken forward by someone outside the department.

“We will very shortly publish the terms of reference and, once the review has been completed, will also make public the findings and recommendations and share these with the Assembly.

“I have also asked to meet the chair and deputy chair of the AERA Committee to set out the particular circumstances surrounding the intervention that took place and to outline the actions we are taking and I look forward to this engagement.”

Store assistants earn from £13.50 per hour as a starting wage

A major supermarket brand wants to open new stores in Cambridgeshire. Aldi is looking to secure sites for new branches amid an expansion in the UK.

Priority areas include South Cambridge, according to an Aldi spokesperson. The expansion will also create new jobs, with store assistants earning from £13.50 per hour nationally as a starting wage.

Jonathan Neale, managing director of national real estate at Aldi UK, said: “We know how important it is for people to have access to affordable, high-quality food close to where they live, which is why we’re focused on identifying the communities that would benefit most from a new Aldi store.

“Opening new stores in these areas means we can bring great value to more customers, while also creating jobs and offering industry-leading pay.”

The supermarket brand is investing more than £370 million in new stores this year. It is working towards a long-term target of 1,500 locations nationwide.

A spokesperson said: “Aldi is seeking freehold, leasehold or long leasehold sites in prominent locations with good visibility and access, and is encouraging landowners and agents in Cambridgeshire to come forward with suitable opportunities.”

Places are still available throughout the summer period for travellers to book a stay at a cosy and award-winning pod. While many parts of Wales are home to a variety of quaint scenes, rolling hills, and plenty of greenery, Snowdonia is frequently placed in high regard for such things.

Those looking to enjoy a relaxing few days away from home with their furry friends can book a stay at The Kites Nest from just £522 for two nights. The small wooden cabin is located at Pont-rhyd-y-groes near Pontrhydfendigaid, Snowdonia and was the Sykes Gem Awards 2025 Gold winner for ‘Best for Couples‘.

Even better, it was constructed by the award-winning firm My Shired, which has been featured on Channel 4’s George Clark’s Amazing Spaces, with the exterior being built with FSC-graded timber, including oak, larch, and red cedar.

The unique lodge also provides access to a private drive, giving easy access to the property’s private studio-style living space. While inside the property, visitors can make use of a variety of amenities, including a kitchen space, lounge area, and outdoor dining space.

The lodge is also in close proximity to Aberystwyth, which lets visitors explore a variety of pubs, restaurants, and shops. Aberstwyth is also has its own wonderful beach, which will be perfect to explore on days that the sun comes out this summer.

However, if you want to visit somewhere different, you could opt for a stay at Chestnuts at Youlton Lodge in North Yorkshire, with seven-night stays being offered from £860. Situated near the village of Tollerton, the holiday cottage can accommodate six guests with three bedrooms and is in close proximity to pubs and shops.

Or, you could visit Valley View Cottage in Llanfair Clydogau, which offers seven-night stays from £665 this summer. This single-story property is in a secluded rural area and provides a spacious balcony to take in the surrounding scenes.

Customers over at Sykes Cottages have awarded The Kites nest a five-star rating, with Sykes itself also providing a five-star rating. One happy customer who stayed at the lodge said: “We have just returned from the Kites nest and were absolutely overwhelmed with the generosity of Laurence and Julie, they are the most genuinely lovely people who’s obvious passion for the area and for making their guests feel totally at home and comfortable from the time you arrive to the time you leave.”

Another added: “Incredible beautiful stay will be back absolutely stunning.” A third said: “The hosts were faultless – very friendly, helpful, whilst they were always on hand they were non intrusive.”

A fourth added: “Superb. We loved it so much we instantly booked for two weeks next year!” While a fifth said: “”Fantastic place to stay, we had a wonderful 5 night stay.”

A sixth added: “The location is perfect, amazing views so peaceful.”

However, one customer noted a minor issue:”The cosiness of the cabin cannot be faulted – comfortable bed and sofa. The cleanliness was ok, a few spots missed – dirty shower tray on arrival, cupboard fronts slightly grubby and crumbs in the microwave. Location faultless – beautiful scenery & wildlife nearby. Cabin private from the owner’s house. Lovely walks nearby.”

Another said: “I missed not having a table nor oven. Bed exceptionally comfortable and lovely to have a warm bathroom. Outside space was delightful. Owners were very helpful and friendly.”

Georgina Rodriguez reflected on being a mum to her fiancé Cristiano Ronaldo‘s son after they enjoyed a ‘special’ family holiday together.

The footballer, 41, and Georgina, 32, are said to be tying the knot at Funchal cathedral next week, before heading to the five-star Savoy Palace hotel for the reception.

The couple enjoyed a pre-wedding getaway with 16-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo Jr as she took to Instagram to share fun-filled beach snaps.

Georgina gushed over the relationship she shares with her stepson, whose biological mother remains private and the footballer has full custody.

She captioned her post: ‘Fairy tale Baptism. It was always my dream to bathe in a waterfall. Junior, a sculptor, and his talent in everything he sets his mind to

‘Since he was little, this trip has been our special time. Dad, Mom, and him, together at sea, summer after summer.

The couple have daughters Alana and Bella together, and welcomed twins Eva Maria and Mateo through surrogacy.

Bella had a twin brother named Angel, but he sadly passed away shortly after birth.

It was previously claimed the couple were set to wed at the Quinta da Regaleira estate in Sintra this weekend.

However, the rumours were cast in doubt as it was open to the public this weekend.

The Sun reported Ronaldo will in fact get married at the cathedral, with weddings usually starting from 3pm before moving to the Savoy Palace hotel, which boasts four restaurants.

A source said: ‘Guests at the hotel have been told two floors will be out of use on Friday and Saturday, as well as several bar areas.’

Funchal is the hometown and birthplace of football star Cristiano. There is a bronze statue in his honour and he even has a hotel named after him.

While he has an estimated net worth of $1.2billion to $1.4billion, Ronaldo’s choice to revisit his hometown is hugely sentimental as he grew up in poverty and shared a room with all of his siblings. He left home at the age of 11 to join Sporting Lisbon.

The Daily Mail has contacted Georgina and Ronaldo’s representatives for comment.

The couple have both shown off their huge diamond rings in the lead up to the apparent wedding after flying to Portugal.

Georgina made a pointed reference to her huge diamond engagement ring in a new post on Friday.

The model showed off her incredible curves as she posed on the beach solo before sharing a family shot with her fiancé and his son Junior, 16.

She also shared a selfie in a beach cover up where she seemed keen to show off her huge ring.

Before the rumoured big day, Cristiano and Georgina unwound during a beach day as she penned in the caption: ‘Shinrin-yoku’ – a Japanese term for relaxation in nature.

The couple have both shown off their huge diamond rings in the lead up to the apparent wedding.

The pair got engaged when he popped the question last August after eight years of dating.

Georgina met Cristiano in 2016 when she caught his attention working as a sales assistant in a Madrid Gucci shop.

They moved to Saudi Arabia after Ronaldo signed for Al-Nassr in 2022 in a sensational £175million-a-year contract.

His decision to move to Saudi Arabia effectively ended his career at the top level.

It was thought the footballer had been hoping to secure a switch to a Champions League club before the move but it never materialised.

Cristiano is making a remarkable £300-a-minute in Saudi Arabia but last year admitted he wishes he could leave and only play for Portugal.

He also owns a stake in the club itself, boosting his astronomical net worth even more.

He joined rival Lionel Messi in taking up a promotional position with the gulf nation, which has faced criticism for its human rights record, as well as crackdowns on women’s rights activists, LGBTQ+ people and those who speak out against the rule of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Mateus Fernandes drops real reason he snubbed Man United to complete Tottenham transfer

Published

on

Manchester Evening News

Mateus Fernandes has outlined why he chose to sign for Tottenham in a club-record £85m deal despite interest from Michael Carrick and Manchester United

Mateus Fernandes has revealed that Roberto De Zerbi was one of the main reasons behind why he snubbed Manchester United for Tottenham.

United had been long linked with a move to Fernandes before Tottenham accelerated their interest and beat them in the race for the 22-year-old Portugal international. Indeed, last month Spurs confirmed the signing of Fernandes from West Ham for a club-record £85million.

Now, Fernandes has opened up on his move to Tottenham and the decision behind joining the north London club despite interest from United and elsewhere.

Asked why he chose to sign for Spurs, Fernandes told The Athletic: “The desire of playing for a big club, winning games, to fight for the Premier League, for the title.

“The way he [De Zerbi] spoke with me and my family was very important for me. He was calling me every day, so I’m very happy to work with him, and hopefully we can do great things. It was more about (forming a) connection, because my dad and my mum don’t speak English very well. It was more about feelings. He said he would take care of me, that he would be my second dad in England. I’m very happy to work with him.”

Fernandes was relegated with Southampton before suffering the same fate with West Ham last season. But that still didn’t put off suitors with Tottenham smashing their transfer record to sign him.

As well as speaking to De Zerbi, Fernandes added that a conversation with former Sporting CP teammate Pedro Porro was crucial in him making the move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Recalling an exchange with Spain World Cup winner Porro, Fernandes said: “He called me one day – I didn’t answer because I was sleeping — he said, in Portuguese, ‘Come on Mateus, you need to play with us, we want you. It was me that told the manager to bring you.’

“Then when everything was done, I spoke with him a bit about the club, the mentality in the team, the team-mates as well. He’s an important player. He’s one of the best right-backs in the world. He’s a top guy.”

After losing out on Fernandes, United went and signed Andrey Santos for £48m from Chelsea and then Youri Tielemans in a £35m deal from Aston Villa. The Reds could still sign a third new midfielder before the transfer window closes on September 1 with Aurelien Tchouameni linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Former Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho left Chelsea earlier this summer to join Aston Villa on loan

Alejandro Garnacho’s first appearance for Aston Villa has led to many fans saying the same thing about the former Manchester United winger.

Garnacho left United last summer to join Chelsea in a £40million deal, and just 12 months later, he has completed a move to Villa on a season-long loan, which also includes an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the campaign.

On Saturday, Garnacho made his first appearance for Villa in a pre-season friendly against Indonesia All Stars at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium.

Villa claimed a 3-1 win, with Garnacho playing the full 90 minutes as he helped his new club claim a victory. After the game, Garnacho appeared to aim a dig at Chelsea with a post on social media.

Taking to his Instagram story, Garnacho wrote: “See you soon Bangkok! First start after three months. Happy to be enjoying football again. One per cent every day. Thanks Indonesia.”

Garnacho’s performance led to plenty of reaction from United fans, as well as supporters of both Chelsea and Villa, with many in agreement about the Argentina international – and putting the boot in on Chelsea.

One fan wrote: “Chelsea made my boy lose his confidence. 19-year-old Garnacho would do take ons and shoot immediately the post is on sight. Now we watch him do back passes and being too careful even when he’s in the box.”

While another added: “Garnacho clearly has ability, can see it in his first touch. He was frustrated, he made a lot of runs and wasn’t found. Clearly lacking in confidence too.”

One more fan wrote: “I’m afraid the old Garnacho is gone. The criticism and constant negativity seem to have gotten to him. Confidence is a fragile thing, and once it’s broken, it can change a player completely.”

While another said: “Garnacho debut for Aston Villa, why do I feel he’s learning and correcting all his mistakes.”

Villa have the option of signing Garnacho on a permanent deal for a fee believed to be worth around £42.5million next summer.

United could come up against Garnacho once again this forthcoming season, with United scheduled to face Villa on November 7 at Old Trafford, before the return visit to Villa Park on January 16.
