Photo credit: Jace LeRoy Denis Aminev, a Russian photographer, has spent years attempting to recreate the look of those magical film days that digital photography couldn’t quite replicate. It all started with movies shot on film, and how the stretched aspect ratio immediately draws your attention to them. Standard lenses and anamorphic adapters fell short, so he turned to something more direct: building his own camera from scratch.
Aminev began experimenting with pinhole cameras in early 2024, hoping to capture even just a respectable image. Not only was he able to capture that shot, but he also demonstrated how amazing the outcome could be with the correct instruments. Emboldened by his accomplishment, he set out to create a completely functional prototype camera by sifting through old cameras and replacing the parts with printed ones. It took him a few months to get the initial version operating, but once he did, things took off from there. By August 2024, he had versions 4 and 5 of the camera, which had all of the details locked in.

All of these modifications lead him to build the Infidex 176 V, a name that accurately describes the camera’s infinite focus and double exposure capacity. It’s also quite neat because it’s all designed to be manufactured using a standard FDM printer and some PLA or similar material, so no fancy equipment is required. After you’ve printed all of the components, all you have to do is glue them together, add a few clamps, and some hardware such as brass inserts, wire springs, and hinges, and you’re ready to go.
Loading the film is simple because 35mm film is still available at most camera stores. Each roll contains 36 exposures, or approximately 19 of those super-wide panoramic shots (72 by 24mm). That’s a really extreme aspect ratio, around 1:2.7 or even 3:1. The lenses are quite easy to replace, and most people simply use an 80mm f/2.8 from a Mamiya C330, but he has used various lenses in prior iterations, such as Lomo Lubitel components. To focus, simply crank the lens, which has a typical helicoid mount that allows you to focus from infinity or up close.
As you might expect, following the instructions is simple: double-check the dimensions to ensure they’re correct, then sand or file each piece to smooth out any bumps from the supports, and that’s it. Aminev has also come up with some clever light trap solutions to prevent stray light from interfering with the illusion. Even with bad film, the visuals appear amazingly sharp.
Jace LeRoy, a photographer who knew Aminev online, was among the first to discover the project. Jace was one of the guys who actually built one of the cameras, and when he saw the results of the test film, he thought, “Yeah right,” but when the visuals showed as clear as a bell, he was pleasantly surprised. He tested it with a range of films, including some rather simple ones like Kodak Gold 200, Portra 160, CineStill 800T, and Kentmere 400, and the results were consistent each time. He emphasized that some lenses may produce vignetting, but the overall image quality is well worth the trade-off. [Source]

Many of the following foods contain highly refined grains, high amounts of trans fats or other processed fats that are hard for the body to use effectively. The foods lack many of the key nutrients such as dietary fiber, that promote gut health. Over time, depriving your body of the many vitamins, minerals and nutrients of whole foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains may create deficiencies that have medical symptoms.
White bread
White bread is made with a kind of bread flour that is processed from wheat. The processing removes bran and germ: parts of wheat grain. Whole wheat will generally be darker and denser, because it contains more nutrients and more fiber. These two aspects are great for your digestion and give your body the nutrition it needs. White bread has a nice light flavor but it’s made of just the endosperm layer of a wheat grain, and it contains less nutritional value. Instead, choose whole grain bread, which is loaded with essential nutrients.
Many of the reasons why eating too many chips can be harmful is because they don’t provide a balanced source of calories. The amount of oil and simple carbohydrates they contain makes them calorie-dense but they aren’t correspondingly full of useful nutrients like vitamins. Chips that don’t contain any preservatives are a nice option for an occasional delicious indulgence but eating nothing but chips in a meal will leave your body wishing for more vitamins, protein and fiber.

French fries
French fries include many of the same nutrients as chips, although there’s more actual potato in a french fry. The crispiness of a french fry, however, doesn’t have to be from deep-fat frying, which has a lot of oils if you eat them often. In an air fryer, a thin sheen of oil (or even zero oil) can still get you a homemade, low-salt batch of french fries made from basically only potatoes. If your diet already has enough oil in it, this could be a good way to get a crispy treat without going over your daily value.
Fried chicken
Chicken is a delicious lean protein, but the breading on fried chicken tends to include white flour, oil and salt. These three ingredients are fine in moderation, but choosing grilled chicken or air-fried chicken could help you to reduce unhealthy ingredients if you’re already getting more than the recommended amount.
Processed meats
Generally, processed meats have few nutrients in them that, when consumed in excess, have been linked to negative medical outcomes. Processing meats sometimes involves adding nitrates and nitrites, which have been linked to higher cancer risk when eaten in moderation. Also, sodium is built into processed meat at fairly substantial levels. Whenever possible, cook and eat fresh meat.
Sugary cereals
Like eating candy, sugary cereal often has a lot of simple carbohydrates and sugars compared to a lower protein, fiber and vitamin content. As a breakfast option, sugary cereals can also result in a blood sugar crash that makes you feel hungry soon after eating the cereal. Choosing a lower sugar cereal that has more protein and fiber included, as well as a plant-based or dairy milk can help you feel full and energetic longer.

Margarine
Margarine was turned to when the saturated fats in butter were seen as a negative for our health. However, margarine varies: In some countries, it has harmful trans fats that aren’t easily processed by the body and in many cases it has a similar amount of processed saturated fat. Read the label or choose a less processed oil, like olive oil, as a bread topper if you really want to cut butter from your diet.
Frozen entrees
All frozen entrees aren’t created equal — flash-frozen vegetables and cooked chicken, for instance, sometimes are low in preservatives and are a great way to eat if you need convenience food. However, for premade meals, check what types of food and other items are in your meal, especially if you’re worried about preservatives or food coloring in your diet.
Boxed mac and cheese
While some of the prominent brands of mac and cheese have been found to be high in harmful chemicals, a big reason they’re considered unhealthy is from the high amount of simple carbohydrates and fats and low nutritional value. If you love the cheesy pasta, though, don’t despair: There are a variety of versions now that are either incorporating whole grains, vegetables like cauliflower and lower levels of preservatives and fats.
Baked goods
Cakes, donuts and other baked goods can be delicious. But they can also be loaded with simple carbohydrates and saturated fats. Plus, they have very little fiber, protein or vitamins. If you make your own baked goods, however, it’s easy to make a treat that will deliver more nutrition, be it with some whole wheat flour substituted, an unsaturated fat substituted for butter or adding fruits or grated zucchini to increase vitamin content.

China is officially telling automakers to get a full grip: a complete wheel-style steering wheel. According to a draft from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the country plans to ban “yoke-style” or “half” steering wheels (via CarNewsChina).
The ban comes into effect from January 1, 2027, as part of the updated national safety standard (GB 11557-202X). While the documentation doesn’t explicitly name yokes, the new crash-testing requirements make it effectively impossible to pass.

China tightens its grip on steering design
The updated safety norms require steering wheels to pass an impact test at 10 specific points around the rim, and guess what: a yoke-style steering wheel, which doesn’t have a top part, can’t exactly volunteer for the test. It’s a no rim, no test, no approval kind of situation.
Chinese regulators explain how the choice isn’t about aesthetics. Rounder steering wheels offer a broader surface area, preventing drivers from pitching forward past the wheel in the event of a crash. Concerns about airbag deployment have also fueled the new norms.
The move will affect brands that have embraced the sci-fi look, including Tesla (among the major automakers that popularized the yoke-style steering wheels), Lexus, IM Motors, and Mercedes-Benz. While new models must comply from 2027, existing models might get a 13-month transition period.

For Chinese drivers who never quite got used to shuffling a yoke through a tight parking space, the news might come as a relief. For those chasing a spaceship-like vibe, automakers have to get back to the drawing board to continue selling models in the region.
For now, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hasn’t given any indication about such bans coming to the United States, nor do the regulatory bodies here have a norm that automatically rules out yoke-style steering wheels.

Skimo is a test of endurance where athletes climb up steep mountains on skis and then race back down. It combines the physical challenge of mountain climbing with the technical speed of skiing. With three gold medals on the line, it’s he biggest change to the Winter Olympics lineup in years. Here’s everything you need to know about skimo and how, when, and where to watch.
Meet skimo, the new Olympic sport

As you might have guessed from the name, skimo is a new skiing event. Unlike other ski races, this one involves going both uphill and downhill, combining the endurance of Nordic skiing with the daring of alpine racing, with a pinch of NASCAR pit crew feeling at the top, as competitors transition from climbing to skiing down.
A skimo race begins at the bottom of the hill. Skiers start with carpet-like strips called “skins” on the bottom of their skis, which help them grip the snow as they race uphill. As if cross-country skiing wasn’t enough of an aerobic test of pain tolerance, let’s make it harder and race uphill!
As racers near the top of the skimo course, there will be a section too steep for skis, so racers will hop out of their skis, throw them on their back and hike up the hill in their boots. This exhausting section is called “boot packing.”
Finally, at the top, racers will jump back into their skis, strip off the skins with shocking efficiency and then race down the hill through a series of gates to the finish line. This downhill section will look like a giant slalom race, for those familiar with alpine ski racing.

What are the three skimo events?
There are men’s and women’s sprint events, as well as a mixed relay.
The sprint events will be completed faster than you would ever expect. Racers will climb roughly 230 feet to the top over the two uphill sections and then race down to the finish line in under three minutes.

The mixed relay will feature teams of one man and one woman. Each racer will go through the course twice, with the woman racing the first and third legs and the man racing the second and final legs. Since skimo racers use ski poles, there is no baton passing in a skimo relay — a simple tag is all that is required to pass the race to your teammate. The team with the fastest cumulative time wins.
The mixed relay course is longer than the sprint races and, in a twist, features a bootpack section on the second ascent but not the first. The total time for the mixed relay race is expected to be around 30 minutes.
When are the skimo events at the 2026 Olympics?
The men’s and women’s sprint events take place on Thursday, Feb. 19, at the Stelvio Ski Centre in Bormio. All the skimo sprints will take place on this one day, from the first heats to the gold medal final in both the men’s and women’s competitions.
Each field consists of 18 competitors who race in three heats of six. The top three from each heat, plus the three fastest who didn’t automatically qualify, advance to the semifinals. The two fastest from each semifinal, along with the two next-best times, create a field of six for the skimo final.

There are no preliminary heats for the mixed relay event, just a final, consisting of 12 to 18 teams. The men’s and women’s mixed relay finals will be run on Saturday, Feb. 21.

Which countries are the best at skimo?
Ski mountaineering started in the Alps, so it won’t surprise you when I tell you that France, Italy and Switzerland have historically dominated the skimo scene. At last year’s Ski Mountaineering World Championships, France won nine medals (four gold), Switzerland won seven (three gold) and Italy was third in total medals with four.

The current men’s world champion is Spain’s Oriol Cardona Coll. He’s the gold medal favorite in Milan Cortina for the men’s sprint. Emily Harrop from France is the favorite for the women’s sprint.
Who’s on the US skimo team?
Anna Gibson and Cam Smith will represent Team USA in the mixed relay race. They became the first American team ever to win a mixed relay World Cup event. Their win at Solitude, Utah, was not only historic on a national level but also qualified them for the Olympics.
Gibson is a 26-year-old from Jackson, Wyoming, with a background in trail running and Nordic skiing. Hailing from Rockford, Illinois, Smith is 30 years old and the closest the US has to a skimo veteran. He’s an 11-time US Ski Mountaineering national champion and a five-time North American Ski Mountaineering champion.
Google is introducing Gemini-powered Audio Summaries to Google Docs, letting you listen to a shorter AI-generated overview of your document on the go. Think of it as turning long-form documents, such as product manuals, minutes of the meeting, or a quarterly business report, into an audio-only podcast.
Audio Summaries generate a short, natural-language recap of the document (typically a couple of minutes long) that retains the key ideas; it is based on Google Gemini.

It offers the gist of the entire document in audio format. You can listen to it while completing your steps on a treadmill, preparing breakfast, or simply walking to your class or office.
The Audio Summaries feature is available in Google Docs on the web, under Tools > Audio > Listen to document summary. Once you select the feature, Gemini scans the file and produces a narrated summary, along with a “Listen to this tab” option that reads the entire page for when you don’t want to miss the details.
Google says the voices sound natural (similar to the Gemini AI assistant). You can also control the playback speed to suit your needs. You also control standard controls like play, pause, and timeline scrubbing, as well as different voice styles, so that you can personalize the document-turned-podcast yourself.
The Audio Summaries feature is rolling out gradually. However, the feature isn’t available for free users; it is currently limited to paid tiers, including the Workspace Business (Standard and Plus) and Enterprise plans (Standard and Plus), as well as certain AI add-ons (including Google AI Ultra and AI Pro).
Audio Summaries could really help enhance your productivity, especially if you’re a multitasker or have accessibility needs. However, be careful when using the feature, as summarizing the document might miss some important details.

Reuniting families with their lost pooches, what’s not to like? Well, coordinated neighborhood surveillance, for one.
That sums up the reaction to the Super Bowl ad for Search Party, the AI-powered feature from Amazon’s Ring that mobilizes outdoor cameras across a neighborhood to help find lost dogs.
Search Party raised privacy concerns when it launched last year, focusing in part on the fact that the feature is turned on by default in eligible cameras, requiring users to opt out. (In the Ring app, the Search Party settings are accessible via the Control Center from the menu.) But as with most things, the spotlight during the biggest game of the year took it to a whole new level.
Here’s how it works: When someone reports a lost dog in the Ring app, nearby outdoor Ring cameras with the feature enabled use AI to scan their saved footage for a potential match.
If a camera spots something, the camera’s owner (not the owner of the lost dog) gets a notification. They then decide whether to share the clip with the dog’s owner. Nothing is shared automatically. The search is temporary, expiring after a few hours unless renewed.

That kind of subtlety doesn’t exactly translate to a 30-second Super Bowl spot. But even with a fuller understanding of how it works, some people aren’t buying it. The ad is being tagged as “creepy” and “dystopian,” with critics asking: if Ring’s AI can scan a neighborhood’s cameras for a specific dog, what’s to stop it from doing the same for a specific person?
For the record, Ring says Search Party is not designed to process human biometrics, and that Search Party footage is not included in the company’s Community Requests service, which allows law enforcement to request video for voluntary sharing by Ring users.
In an interview with GeekWire last year, Amazon VP and Ring founder Jamie Siminoff (the guy in the ad) described the Search Party feature as a breakthrough made possible by advances in AI, saying it couldn’t have been built at reasonable cost even two years ago.
Asked how the company was balancing these kinds of benefits against privacy concerns, he said Ring’s approach is to give customers full control. “You don’t balance it,” he said. “You give 100% control to your customers. It’s their data. They control it.”

But for critics, the issue isn’t really about what Search Party does now. It’s about what the underlying technology could be used for down the road.
That concern is amplified by Ring’s own recent moves. The company has also rolled out Familiar Faces, which lets users register images of family and friends so their cameras can identify specific people, but limited to those the camera owner knows.
Ring’s partnership with Flock Safety, the license-plate-recognition company used by thousands of police departments, is another lightning rod, even though Ring says the integration isn’t live yet. The partnership is part of Ring’s Community Requests tool, which lets local law enforcement request footage from nearby Ring users during active investigations. Users can choose to ignore those requests.
The company says it has no partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and does not share video with the agency. But civil liberties groups, including the ACLU, have raised concerns that once footage reaches local police, there’s no guarantee it stays there, particularly given reports that some Flock-connected departments have performed lookups for ICE.

Siminoff, who returned to lead Ring last year after a hiatus, has been open about re-embracing the company’s original mission of making neighborhoods safer, including reinstating partnerships with law enforcement that had been scaled back during his absence.
In the GeekWire interview, he acknowledged that not everyone inside the company was on board with the shift, but said he’s “very convicted on the impact that we can have with Ring,” and on a much faster timeline than he might have thought in the past, due to AI.
Amazon says Search Party has reunited more than one lost dog a day with their families since launch. It’s committing $1 million to equip animal shelters with Ring cameras. But the bigger question fueling the backlash is whether finding lost puppies today is building the infrastructure for something less cute and cuddly in the future.
IT productivity researcher Erik Brynjolfsson writes in the Financial Times that he’s finally found evidence AI is impacting America’s economy. This week America’s Bureau of Labor Statistics showed a 403,000 drop in 2025’s payroll growth — while real GDP “remained robust, including a 3.7% growth rate in the fourth quarter.”
This decoupling — maintaining high output with significantly lower labour input — is the hallmark of productivity growth. My own updated analysis suggests a US productivity increase of roughly 2.7% for 2025. This is a near doubling from the sluggish 1.4% annual average that characterised the past decade… The updated 2025 US data suggests we are now transitioning out of this investment phase into a harvest phase where those earlier efforts begin to manifest as measurable output.
Micro-level evidence further supports this structural shift. In our work on the employment effects of AI last year, Bharat Chandar, Ruyu Chen and I identified a cooling in entry-level hiring within AI-exposed sectors, where recruitment for junior roles declined by roughly 16% while those who used AI to augment skills saw growing employment. This suggests companies are beginning to use AI for some codified, entry-level tasks. Or, AI “isn’t really stealing jobs yet,” according to employment policy analyst Will Raderman (from the American think tank called the Niskanen Center). He argues in Barron’s that “there is no clear link yet between higher AI use and worse outcomes for young workers.”
Recent graduates’ unemployment rates have been drifting in the wrong direction since the 2010s, long before generative AI models hit the market. And many occupations with moderate to high exposure to AI disruptions are actually faring better over the past few years. According to recent data for young workers, there has been employment growth in roles typically filled by those with college degrees related to computer systems, accounting and auditing, and market research. AI-intensive sectors like finance and insurance have also seen rising employment of new graduates in recent years. Since ChatGPT’s release, sectors in which more than 10% of firms report using AI and sectors in which fewer than 10% reporting using AI are hiring relatively the same number of recent grads.
Even Brynjolfsson’s article in the Financial Times concedes that “While the trends are suggestive, a degree of caution is warranted. Productivity metrics are famously volatile, and it will take several more periods of sustained growth to confirm a new long-term trend.” And he’s not the only one wanting evidence for AI’s impact. The same weekend Fortune wrote that growth from AI “has yet to manifest itself clearly in macro data, according to Apollo Chief Economist Torsten Slok.”

[D]ata on employment, productivity and inflation are still not showing signs of the new technology. Profit margins and earnings forecasts for S&P 500 companies outside of the “Magnificent 7” also lack evidence of AI at work… “After three years with ChatGPT and still no signs of AI in the incoming data, it looks like AI will likely be labor enhancing in some sectors rather than labor replacing in all sectors,” Slok said.

What are the technical limits of the Belkin ConnectAir?
Belkin says the adapter supports 1080p resolution at 60Hz with latency typically under 80 milliseconds, which still means smooth video playback even if it’s not in 4k. (In fact, because the adapter supports HDCP 1.4, some 4k content requiring HDCP 2.2 might not even play). It has a wireless range of up to 131 feet in open environments, but you might experience a much shorter range in the office or other space where you’re trying to connect through walls.
As far as compatibility is concerned, the ConnectAir adapter works with any USB-C device that supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. Some examples would be Windows laptops, macOS and ChromeOS devices, tablets like the iPad Pro or iPad Air, and smartphones with Samsung DeX. That said, the USB-C adapter isn’t compatible with iPhones or other Lightning-based devices. However, it can work with docking stations, just so long as the USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode.
One single HDMI receiver can pair with up to eight transmitters, though only one device can stream at a time. You can also can switch between mirrored and extended display modes depending on their device’s capabilities. The receiver could technically be powered through a USB port on a television if it provides at least 2.3 watts. Otherwise, you’ll need a separate power adapter (not included).
Researchers from China’s Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics recently unveiled a new EV battery technology aimed at delivering stronger performance in freezing conditions than traditional lithium-ion packs. The so-called “liquid-solid” battery is claimed to retain more than 85% of its capacity after operating for eight hours at -34°C (−29°F), with early tests conducted using industrial-grade drones showing promising results.
While this liquid-solid technology has yet to be tested in an electric vehicle, a team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has taken a similar step and tested a different EV battery technology designed for sub-zero temperatures using a production vehicle from automaker Geely. According to CarNewsChina, the researchers have successfully tested an aluminum-based wide-temperature lithium-ion battery in a Geely EX5 EV, claiming it can achieve over 92% discharge efficiency at -25°C (-13°F) and charge to 90% in around 20 minutes under extreme cold conditions.
Cold weather has long been a weak spot for regular lithium-ion batteries. In many EVs, including models from Tesla, low temperatures can reduce range and slow charging speeds unless the battery is carefully preconditioned. Even with advanced thermal management systems, performance typically drops as temperatures fall well below freezing.
The new aluminum-anode design is said to address this issue by widening the battery’s operating temperature range. In testing, it reportedly remained functional across a broad temperature window and managed heat effectively during fast charging without requiring complex insulation setups. The drivers were still chatting about how bizarre it seemed to watch a full-size pickup easily pass them.
