Esse came through the academy at Millwall and made his debut for the club in December 2022. He signed a new “long-term” contract in the summer.
Able to play in attacking midfield and on the wing, he has made a total of 66 appearances and scored seven goals for the club.
He last played in the Lions’ 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, 4 January.
“It’s been coming to a conclusion now for, I don’t know, five days, but I’m not in control of things, and I think, to be honest, as a club, you’ve got so many different facets,” Neil added.
“You’ve got the player and the agent obviously trying to get the best deal, you’ve got the other club trying to get the best deal, you’ve got Crystal Palace trying to get the best deal, so there are so many moving parts in it.
“But I’m sure it’ll be concluded one way or the other pretty soon.”
Millwall face Hull City in the Championship, while Crystal Palace visit West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday.
