1) Vikings Fans Don’t Have to Pick a Side in the J.J. McCarthy-Kyler Murray QB Battle: Vikings fans will make the decision that Vikings fans want to make. Quite possibly, the majority of the fans will arrive at a consensus about the best path forward. Do note, though, that Minnesota has made the call.
2) Jakobe Thomas Isn’t Making Much Noise During Vikings Practices: Still early but there’s something to be said for what’s not said. Guys such as Chuck Demmings and Jake Golday have received no shortage of hype (Caleb Banks, too). Where does Mr. Thomas land within the safety hierarchy? At minimum, he should be a great special teams player.
3) Demond Claiborne Has a Better Day on Saturday: Quite possibly, nobody on the Vikings’ roster boasts as much speed as the young runner (corner Isaiah Rodgers may quibble with that perspective). Unless there’s an injury, Claiborne won’t go higher on the depth chart than being the RB3 in 2026. Maybe he can show enough in that job to still demand touches.
4) Jake Golday Gets Endorsement from Vikings Legend: The rookie is looking really good. He’s a versatile, explosive athlete who boasts good length. What’s yet to be determined is how much Brian Flores can put on his shoulders as a rookie.
5) Vikings Sign New RB, Say Goodbye to Another: A good GM is always hunting for ways to improve the team. Sometimes, that means showing a player the door to see if a different player can help. Can the new add solidify the running back depth?

Just over halfway through the penultimate month of the major league season, the St. Louis Cardinals’ first baseman is slashing .340/.441/.780 in 50 at-bats over 14 games.
He has six home runs on 17 hits with 19 RBIs and 13 runs scored this month.
It’s a run he and his teammates hope will continue when they open a five-game visit to the Cincinnati Reds with a doubleheader on Monday.
Burleson helped power the Cardinals to an 11-4 victory against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, going 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, four RBIs and two runs scored. His homer was his 21st of the season, matching his career high set in 2024.
“I know what August can do to you,” Burleson said. “I know what September can do for you. I understand what that looks like, and so I think I’ve just taken that next step.”
The 27-year-old has already established career bests with 90 RBIs and 31 doubles. He’s just 12 hits shy of matching his career high (147) reached in 2024 and, with 70 runs scored, is one away from matching his total from that season, as well.
“This is a guy that knows what he needs to do,” St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol said. “You give him enough time and he’ll figure it all out.”
Sunday’s game allowed the Cardinals to win a fourth straight series and improve to 9-4 over their past 13 games after going 4-12 in the first 16 coming out of the All-Star break.
Quinn Mathews (0-1, 3.60 ERA) will start the first game. It’ll be the second major league appearance for the left-hander, who gave up two runs on six hits over five innings against the Toronto Blue Jays in his debut on Aug. 1.
Righty Andre Pallante (12-6. 3.46) will get the nod in the second game.
Whom the Reds plan to counter with for the opener hadn’t been announced as of Sunday evening, but they’ll be hoping for a quality start to minimize the need from the bullpen after relievers struggled to keep the game close in a 7-1 loss to the visiting Miami Marlins on Sunday.
Nick Lodolo went five innings in his second start since returning from injury as he continues to work his way back after a month-long absence. He held Miami scoreless on three hits.
“I would like to go six innings, especially with what we have ahead (Monday),” Lodolo said. “But I understand it, it’s a process, and I’m building up.”
Julian Garcia picked up where Lodolo left off, retiring six of the seven batters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings. But Tejay Antone took over in the eighth and gave up a home run and two walks, including one with the bases loaded that put St. Louis down 2-0. Then, after Tyler Stephenson homered to cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the eighth, the Marlins capitalized against Ron Marinaccio and a shaky Reds defense to blow the game open.
Cincinnati has dropped two of its past three series and six of its past nine games.
Rhett Lowder (4-18, 5.15) is expected to be on the mound for the second game. The 24-year-old righty is 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in three career starts against the Cardinals.

Bob Peters, making one of his infrequent trips from Western Australia, watched on as Cosmic Crusader extended its flawless Melbourne racing campaign with a victory in the P B Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield.
Now trained at Pakenham by Andrea Leek, Cosmic Crusader has achieved two wins from two starts since its arrival from Perth.
The horse first won the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on July 25, and then added Saturday’s Group 2 race to its impressive record.
Ridden by Willie Pike and starting as the $2.40 favourite, Cosmic Crusader secured a three-quarter length win over Private Eye ($3.40), with Evaporate ($5) a similar distance back in third. Those following the best horse racing betting apps saw the favourite live up to expectations with another strong performance.
Peters mentioned that he couldn’t recall the last time he journeyed from Perth to witness one of his horses race in Melbourne.
“I made it a point never to fly when I only have one runner,” Peter said.
“I went to Morphettville once for a Group 1.
“Everything was going alright, but at six o’clock in the morning I got the call that the horse had done a tendon, so I thought ‘never again’ if I’ve only got one.
“I had another function on, so that’s why I’m here today. It was a good opportunity to come for two things.”
Peters was pleased with Cosmic Crusader’s effort, noting the horse settled further back than anticipated during the race.
The next race on the agenda is the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) on August 29.
“I was a little bit worried in the run when he was pulling, but once Willie got him to the outside, I could see he was on the job,” Peters said.
“(The Memsie) that’s the way to go. He had to get through this one to get there, but he’s done it well.
“It’s a bit of a step up when you get up to the big boys and girls in the next fortnight.”
Leek stated that Cosmic Crusader would not require significant training between its recent win and the Memsie Stakes.
She advised that the horse would be kept in light work on the hills at their property to prepare for the upcoming event.
“He’s a lovely horse with a lot of ability and I thought he had come on from that first-up run and hopefully he can come on from this one to,” Leek said.

India dominates Galle
India’s spinners dominated the opening session, reducing Sri Lanka to 99/5 after India were bowled out for 462.Manav Suthar struck twice for 17 runs, while Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja also picked up wickets. Shubman Gill added a spectacular one-handed catch to dismiss Kamindu Mendis for 14.Sri Lanka trail India by 363 runs, with only five wickets remaining. India’s first innings was anchored by Devdutt Padikkal’s 167, KL Rahul’s 82 and Dhruv Jurel’s 51.
Champion trainer Chris Waller is assembling an outstanding team for the upcoming Group One Winx Stakes, with star mare Autumn Glow expected to be a leading contender. Decisions on the final number of stablemates joining her will be made later in the week.
Six of Waller’s carnival hopefuls participated in exhibition gallops at Rosehill on Saturday. Four of these horses are likely to be nominated for the 1400-metre feature race next weekend, including Autumn Glow.
“Whatever is ready to run, will run, so there will be a lot. It’s just such an important starting point,” Waller remarked from Rosehill. “Not many of them could probably beat a horse like Autumn Glow, but when you’ve got horses like Beiwacht, anything is possible. They’re all well prepared. They’ve been trialling for a number of weeks now. Today was an important stepping stone for me and the horses just to see exactly where they are seven days out from a very big race day.”
James McDonald partnered Autumn Glow during her solo gallop between races, and the jockey returned with a glowing endorsement.
“She is ready to go,” McDonald stated. “She seems to be working really well. Every bit of work she has done, she has come on, worked a bit sharper and sharper.”
Beiwacht and Lady Shenandoah also galloped individually. Waller confirmed both would be among the Winx Stakes (1400m) entries. Meanwhile, ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Campione D’Italia is expected to target the Show County Quality (1200m) on the undercard.
Buckaroo, French import Barnavara, and Autumn Boy worked together on Saturday. However, only Autumn Boy is a likely runner in the Winx Stakes.
Buckaroo is slated to resume in the Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield a week later. Barnavara’s equipment will be adjusted by Waller following her aggressive gallop.
Aeliana, Fangirl, Lindermann, and Angel Capital are also probable Winx Stakes nominations for Waller. However, Angel Capital is anticipated to join Buckaroo in Melbourne.
Aeliana pleased Waller with her barrier trial on Friday, despite an earlier setback in her campaign, and remains a strong contender for the Winx Stakes. “She will definitely be in the ‘noms’,” he said. “She only trialled (on Friday) because of the setback, but I think over 850 (metres), she was sharp enough, which is what I wanted to see.”

Amy Hunt: British sprint star enters stardom with quadruple gold at European Athletics Championships
Hunt is not afraid to voice her bold ambitions.

The next opportunity for global honours, beyond the inaugural World Ultimate Championships in September, will arrive at next year’s World Championships in Beijing.
And, once the dust has settled on a momentous week, Hunt will set about translating continental domination to glory on the sport’s biggest stages – just as British team-mate Asher-Smith achieved following her European treble in 2018.
“Amy has already won world silver, but she was not a favourite then,” Jackson said.
“Now, it’s a big change. She is a champion and she has to go and take on the best in the world.
“Is it going to be easy? No. But this will fill Amy with confidence. She will be on start lines trusting her ability is great, and I’m hoping that she will go from strength and strength.”

Tommy John, the former MLB pitcher whose elbow surgery set the standard in baseball and helped lengthen the careers of countless players, has died. He was 83.
Mike Maguire, his agent, announced John’s death in a statement.

“Thomas Edward ‘Tommy’ John Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Lakewood Ranch last night surrounded by his loving wife, Cheryl, and his sister-in-laws Judith Florentino and Karen Jordan,” the statement read.
“A private celebration of life will be held in Florida.”
John’s death comes about a week after he released a farewell message to fans on New York Yankees’ Old-Timers’ Day.
He said in his message he was “saying goodbye” as the team revealed he had been battling health issues.
“I want to thank the Yankees organization & the Steinbrenner family for giving me this opportunity to say goodbye to everyone, along with all the friends & fans who followed me throughout my 26-year career,” John’s message read.
“Thanks to Dr. Jobe, who saved my arm & made it possible for me to continue pitching. That surgery has since gone on to save the careers of countless pitchers, including many of the very best in the game today.

John had his famed surgery in 1974 and became a success story as he went on to win more than 160 games after the operation was completed. He missed the entire 1975 season and was a three-time All-Star after the surgery.
He finished his career as a four-time All-Star and played eight of his 26 seasons with the Yankees.
He also played for the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels, Cleveland Indians and Oakland Athletics.
He had a career 3.34 ERA with 2,245 strikeouts.
“The day I left for my first job as a pitcher, my father looked at me & said, ‘Good luck, Tommy. Just remember one thing: whether you make it big in the big leagues or you don’t, you’ll always just be Tommy John from Terre Haute, Indiana,’” his message added.

Shubman Gill‘s athleticism came to the fore on the third day of the first India vs Sri Lanka Test at Galle on Monday. A fully stretched Gill leapt to his left at extra cover to complete the catch of Kamindu Mendis off Kuldeep Yadav. Mendis had danced down the pitch to drive Kuldeep’s fuller delivery. Some other fielders might have just attempted to stop the ball, but not Gill. The ball was almost touching the ground as Gill plucked it from mid-air and ensured it did not pop out. Even Gill knew he had done something special as he threw the ball up in the air in celebration.
“Wow, he had no right to take that,” said Sanjay Manjrekar on air. “Honestly, it was never within his reach. Even the batter would have thought, ‘Yeah, it’s in the air, but it was well away.’ One of the best catches that you will see in that area.”

Earlier, Sri Lanka needed just four deliveries on Day 3 to wrap up India’s first innings for 462, as pacer Asitha Fernando swiftly removed tail-ender Prasidh Krishna in the opening over at the Galle International Stadium on Monday.
India, resuming on their overnight score of 460/9, opted against using the heavy roller before the start of play, hoping to allow the pitch to deteriorate further while their last pair batted on. The decision, however, backfired as their innings lasted less than three minutes, with Sri Lanka wrapping up the innings quickly.
Fernando began by dropping a back-of-a-length delivery into Krishna’s body. The batter managed to fend it towards square leg to get off the mark and hand the strike to Kuldeep Yadav. Kuldeep then pulled a short ball outside off stump just over the leaping infielder toward deep mid-wicket for a single, putting Krishna back on strike.
Fernando immediately ramped up the pressure, coming around the wicket to crash a short delivery straight into Krishna’s ribs as the batter struggled to get out of the way. The pacer maintained his short-pitched assault on the next ball as Krishna attempted a pull shot but succeeded only in gloving it behind to wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella, who completed a simple catch to end India’s innings.
Krishna departed for two off seven balls, leaving Kuldeep unbeaten on 13 at the other end. Prior to the start of the day’s play, which began 15 minutes earlier due to the loss of overs on Days 1 and 2 because of persistent rain, the match officials announced a late change in the umpiring setup.
TV umpire Ahsan Raza took over on-field umpiring duties in place of Rod Tucker, who remains sidelined due to illness, while reserve umpire Raveendra Wimalasiri stepped into the third umpire’s role.

Three days after winning the title at the National Bank Open, the sixth-ranked player in the world lost his opening match at the Cincinnati Open on Sunday, falling to Portugal’s Jaime Faria 6-4, 6-4 in one of the final hardcourt tuneups before the U.S. Open.
Seeded eighth in Cincinnati, Shelton dropped his second service game to the Portuguese qualifier who ranks No. 79 in the world. Shelton had no shortage of opportunities to get his serve back, forcing nine break points in the first set. But Faria saved all nine.
Shelton, who has won four tournaments this season, broke Faria to take what looked like a commanding 4-1 lead at one point in the second set. But the 23-year-old Faria broke the fellow 23-year-old in back-to-back service games to suddenly lead 5-4 and serve for the match.
Faria lost just one point in the game to take the win.
“In these moments, you got to take it all in and just enjoy it,” Faria said after picking up the first victory over a top 10 opponent of his career. “It’s a very emotional moment for me and my team, and to do it here in front of an amazing crowd and against the home player at night and at an amazing venue just makes it a little more special.”
Faria will next face 27-year-old Adam Walton of Australia, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over 29th-seeded Ignacio Buse of Peru.
Among the other late matches Sunday, 17th-seeded Frances Tiafoe beat Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego 6-3, 6-4 to set up a round of 32 matchup with No. 16 seed Learner Tien, a 6-3, 7-6 (4) winner over Sebastian Baez of Argentina. Tien lost to Shelton in the semifinals in Montreal. The rest of the top 10 players in action advanced, including No. 2 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, who played for the first time in more than a month because of a back injury and downed Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-5.
Despite failing to convert on a pair of break opportunities in the second set, the No. 4-ranked player in the world relied on his seven aces in the match and won 66 of 111 points to close it out. He will next face Argentinian Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the round of 32.
Russian Andrey Rublev, seeded 13th, handled business against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta 7-6 (5), 6-1, while countryman and fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev, handled Argentina’s Marco Trungelliti 6-4, 7-5.
No. 6 seed Taylor Fritz controlled his match against fellow American Alex Michelsen, winning 6-3, 6-4. His 21 winners underscored his dominance. Australia’s Christopher O’Connell knocked out Norway’s Casper Ruud, who retired. –Field Level Media
