The government has warned: ‘Don’t let scammers steal Christmas’

Millions of UK families are poised to receive a £150 reduction on their energy bills this year, but they’re being warned to stay alert as potential fraudsters may attempt to exploit the situation.

Approximately six million households will benefit from a £150 contribution towards their winter energy costs, with the lion’s share receiving the discount automatically. As early as October, over 250,000 homes nationwide should have received a letter confirming their eligibility for the discount.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer extended the Warm Home Discount to an additional 2.7 million households this winter, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to six million.

However, as Christmas approaches, individuals are being cautioned to be sceptical of any texts or calls purporting to relate to the warm home discount. Scammers may request bank details under the guise of providing the £150 energy bill rebate.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero advises bill-payers to thwart scams by refraining from clicking any links or divulging any financial information. Instead, they should keep an eye out for an official letter confirming their eligibility for the warm home discount, reports the Manchester Evening News.

For the vast majority of recipients, £150 will be automatically deducted from their energy bill, the department said. Some households may need to provide extra information to ensure they get the discount, and will receive a letter advising them to call the helpline provided.

Minister for Energy Consumers Martin McCluskey warned: “We know how difficult the festive season can be for those struggling with their bills. Around six million households will benefit from £150 off their energy bills this winter and, for many, help is just around the corner.

“But fraudsters are well aware of the pressures facing families too. Don’t let scammers steal Christmas, and make sure you know how to spot warm home discount scams. If you’re eligible for the £150 rebate, the Government will not text or call you – we will send you an official letter instead. Don’t get caught out – if it seems too good to be true, check for a letter, too.”

On top of this, the Government is distributing a one-off £10 payment to those receiving specific benefits over the festive period. The DWP’s Christmas Bonus typically lands in accounts during December’s first complete week for all who meet the criteria.

Those entitled to the payment will see it arrive automatically in their bank account, with no need to apply. Eligible benefits include Attendance Allowance, Carer’s Allowance and Pension Credit.

The Department for Work and Pensions has confirmed that recipients needn’t worry about the bonus impacting their existing benefits when it arrives. To be eligible for the money, claimants must be receiving at least one qualifying benefit during the ‘qualifying week’ – typically December’s first full week.
