Shaun Murphy makes emotional admission after beating Kyren Wilson to win Masters

Shaun Murphy has admitted he thought the glory days ‘were gone’ after he stunned Kyren Wilson to win the Masters on Sunday.

The snooker star won 10-7 to win his claim his first Masters in a decade, having performed excellently over the past week.


It was also his first victory in a Triple Crown event since 2015, while the 42-year-old has now earned a staggering £350,000 in prize money.

Speaking after his triumph, Murphy expressed his delight and emotionally admitted he thought his best days in snooker were a thing of the past.

“I can’t believe it, I am in shock,” he said.

“If I’m totally honest I thought these days were gone when I lost to Mark Selby in the 2021 final at the Crucible.

“I thought these days at the business end of events were gone.

“Peter Ebdon has helped me rediscover that self belief. He has helped remind me that I am actually quiote good at this… there is still a bit of life in the old dog yet.”

“I wasn’t surprised when he made a run midway though this match, that’s what world champions do. There was a stage a few frames ago where it was panic stations.”

Wilson could have been forgiven for feeling frustrated after his defeat.

Yet the 33-year-old didn’t appear too downbeat and admitted that he’d be consoling himself with some jagerbombs to help him get over his failure to win the prize.

“I am 33 years old, coming into my prime and I am having an amazing season,” he said.

“Runner-up obviously isn’t what I wanted, but I’ve got Berlin next week, so I’ll go and smash it in Germany.]

“I am a lucky lad, win or lose. Listen I lost, I am gutted, but I tell you what, I am going to consume so many jagerbombs tonight and have the best night ever.”

However, he also couldn’t resist a cheeky little dig at Murphy – saying he needed the win more because of his age.

He added: “No disrespect to Shaun, he is turning into an old man now.

“So he needs this more than me.”
