How China’s Xi Jinping Turned Oil From a Weakness Into a Geopolitical Weapon

Before the U.S. attacked Iran, Beijing spent years and tens of billions of dollars amassing the world’s biggest stockpile of oil. Now, with the conflict likely to last for some time, those reserves have given China huge power over the global oil market—and a critical new defense against the West.

By some estimates, China’s reserves last year were nearly 600 million barrels bigger than those in the U.S. That stockpile allowed it to dramatically slash its oil imports when the war broke out, keeping a lid on global oil prices and safeguarding its own economy.

It has been a major vindication for Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who has sought to buttress China against what he sees as a hostile U.S.-led West. For decades, Chinese leaders have worried about the country’s heavy reliance on imported crude, most of which transits through straits that the U.S. or other militaries could seek to block in a conflict.

Now, the Iran crisis has demonstrated that China’s muscular energy policy has afforded Beijing a major tool it could use, for instance, in a war over Taiwan.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Break Balmoral Holiday to Issue Statement on Deadly Nepal Flooding

Published

on

Kate Middleton

The Prince and Princess of Wales briefly stepped away from their private summer holiday this week to issue a statement of condolence over the catastrophic flash flooding that has killed hundreds of people along the Nepal-China border, following a similar message from King Charles III.

William and Catherine, both 44, posted the statement on their social media accounts addressing the Aug. 26 disaster, which was triggered by the collapse of a glacier and rocky ledge that sent a wall of ice, rock and water surging down the Bhotekoshi River into Nepal. “The scale of the devastation along the Nepal-China border is shocking. We are thinking of everyone caught up in this terrible disaster,” the statement read, according to PEOPLE. “Our thoughts are especially with the families facing an unbearable wait for news and with the communities confronting such immense loss. We are incredibly grateful to all those working in such dangerous conditions to rescue people and support those affected.”

The couple’s message came shortly after King Charles issued his own statement of sympathy. “My wife and I are heartbroken to hear of the devastating flooding that has struck the Nepal-China border. Many in the United Kingdom have strong, deep and personal ties to this part of the world,” the King’s statement read. “We send our most profound sympathy to all those who have so tragically lost their loved ones, and we feel deeply for the many families awaiting anxiously the news of friends and relations.” Charles added, “Our hearts go out also to the families of all the police and Armed Forces personnel who lost their lives while carrying out their courageous duty in the service of others, and we give our deepest thanks to those who have responded so selflessly in undertaking rescue efforts. Our special thoughts and prayers remain with all those affected and, as always, the United Kingdom stands ready to help support those in need.”

The flooding has continued to claim lives in the days since the royal family’s statements were issued. Nepal Police said Friday that at least 579 people have been confirmed dead, with more than 2,400 others still listed as missing, as rescue crews continue searching riverbanks and debris fields across the affected region. Authorities in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, which was also struck by the flooding, have confirmed five additional deaths on their side of the border.

William and Catherine issued their statement while on their annual late-summer break at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, a royal tradition dating back to the reign of Queen Victoria. The couple arrived at the estate on Aug. 20 alongside their three children, Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8. Three days later, the family attended a Sunday service at Crathie Kirk alongside other senior royals, including King Charles, Queen Camilla, Princess Anne and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, and Prince Edward with his daughter Lady Louise. Balmoral was a particular favorite of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who typically spent from late July until October at the Scottish estate and died there in September 2022.

The royal family’s Scotland gathering has unfolded alongside another major development within the family: the return of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to the United Kingdom. PEOPLE first reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who stepped back from royal duties and relocated to California in 2020, arrived back in Britain on Aug. 26 with their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5. The couple plans to establish a private, non-royal home base in the UK, with their children set to begin school there in the coming weeks.

A source close to the family told PEOPLE that Harry’s return could present a meaningful opportunity to repair his strained relationship with his brother, William, though the two remain distant, with the same source describing their current contact as nonexistent. The source suggested Catherine could play a role in encouraging reconciliation between the brothers, saying, “Catherine may step into that breach and try to help, too, because she knows how important family is and how important Harry is to William. She would want to see that healed, as any wife would. This gives them opportunity to try and mend that bridge.” A separate source told PEOPLE that King Charles similarly hopes to see his sons reunited over time, calling the current moment “the best opportunity we have seen in recent years.”

Harry has previously expressed his own desire to repair family ties, telling the BBC in May 2025, “I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore.” Whether that reconciliation advances alongside the broader developments touching the royal family this summer, including the Nepal relief effort now drawing statements of concern from across the monarchy, remains to be seen as both branches of the family navigate a season marked by significant personal and public change.

Argan Remains Bullish As Underlying Power Demand Is Still Very Healthy

My academic background has given me a strong interest in business strategy, financial markets, technology, and data-driven decision making. Alongside my studies, I spend a significant amount of time researching public companies, market trends, and investment opportunities. My primary investing interest is in deep value investing. I am particularly interested in companies that are undervalued by the market but have strong long-term potential, resilient business models, or hidden assets that may not yet be fully recognized by investors. I enjoy analyzing financial statements, management decisions, competitive positioning, and macroeconomic factors that may influence valuation over time. In recent years, I have become increasingly interested in understanding how market psychology and investor sentiment can create opportunities that are often overlooked. I enjoy following companies that may currently be out of favor but still possess strong fundamentals, capable management teams, or long-term competitive advantages. Beyond investing itself, I am also interested in how technology and digital transformation continue to reshape industries and influence the future direction of global markets. Writing allows me to organize my thoughts, improve my research process, and contribute meaningful insights while continuing to learn from other investors and analysts. My motivation for writing on Seeking Alpha is to develop my analytical skills, share investment ideas with a broader audience, and engage with a community of experienced investors and market participants. I believe that discussing different perspectives and receiving constructive feedback is one of the best ways to grow as an investor and analyst. Over time, I hope to build a reputation for thoughtful, well-researched, and objective market analysis.

MSCI rebalancing on Monday: Adani Energy, Groww set for big inflows; RIL, Jio Financial may face outflows
Several Indian stocks are set to see heightened trading activity on Monday as the MSCI rebalancing changes announced on August 13 are scheduled to be implemented on August 31, with the revised weights becoming effective on September 1 (Tuesday). The final 30 minutes of trading on Monday are expected to be particularly important as market participants adjust their positions ahead of the changes.

According to a report by Nuvama Alternative and Quantitative Research, the rebalancing includes additions and exclusions from the MSCI index, along with changes in the weights of several stocks.

Stocks added to MSCI

Laurus Labs, Lenskart, Adani Energy Solutions and Groww are set to be included in the index, which is expected to result in inflows into the four stocks.

Laurus Labs is expected to see inflows of $598 million, while Lenskart could attract $352 million. Adani Energy Solutions is estimated to see $310 million in inflows, while Groww could receive $256 million. The four stocks together are expected to account for total inflows of $1.516 billion.

Stocks excluded from MSCI
Three stocks are set to be removed from the index, potentially resulting in outflows. Balkrishna Industries is expected to see outflows of $169 million, followed by SBI Cards at $143 million and Astral at $138 million. The three stocks together are expected to see total outflows of $450 million.

Stocks with higher weights

Together, these weight increases are expected to bring total inflows of $1.050 billion.

Stocks with lower weights

The rebalancing will also reduce the weights of five stocks, potentially leading to outflows.

Reliance Industries is expected to see the largest outflow at $523 million, followed by Jio Financial at $61 million. Indian Hotels is expected to see an outflow of $32 million, while AB Capital and Colgate could see outflows of $21 million and $16 million, respectively.

The five stocks together are expected to see total outflows of $653 million.

Market outlook for the week

According to Sudeep Shah of SBI Securities, Nifty is trading below all its crucial moving averages. However, most of these moving averages have turned flat, reflecting the lack of a decisive trend amid the prevailing sideways momentum. Momentum indicators and oscillators are also pointing towards continued consolidation.

The daily RSI has remained in the sideways zone for the past 13 trading sessions, while the Stochastic is also oscillating within a range. With momentum indicators failing to provide a clear directional signal, price levels now hold the key to the next move.

This brings the focus back to the crucial support zone. Going ahead, the 24,000–23,950 zone is likely to act as an important support for the index, with the prior swing low and upward-sloping trendline placed in this region. A sustained move below 23,950 could trigger further correction towards 23,700 in the short term.

Stephen Jackson Says LeBron James Left the GOAT Conversation by Choosing 76ers Over Cleveland Return

Published

on

Stephen Jackson

Former NBA champion Stephen Jackson says LeBron James removed himself from the conversation as basketball’s greatest player of all time by signing with the Philadelphia 76ers this offseason instead of returning home to Cleveland, arguing the move reflects a safer path than James’ legacy required.

Jackson made the comments on the “All the Smoke” podcast, saying he never anticipated James would land in Philadelphia. “I thought everywhere in the world, but Philly,” Jackson said, according to comments reported by multiple outlets including Yardbarker and Fadeaway World. “I did not think Philly. I’m sorry. I didn’t. I was one of those guys that thought he would go somewhere he was familiar with, even go to Cleveland.”

Jackson argued that a third stint in Cleveland, rather than joining an already loaded Sixers roster, would have been the only choice capable of keeping James in the same tier as Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant in debates over the sport’s greatest player. “All the talk you hear about, you know, the GOATs and him comparing him to Jordan and Kobe, for me, if he was thinking about it, which he probably never did, but Cleveland only thing that made sense for me to keep him in that conversation,” Jackson said, according to a transcript carried by BasketballNews. “I don’t think that was a best player in the league move of what a guy that I respect as being the best player in the league would do.”

James announced his decision to sign with Philadelphia in late July, ending months of speculation over where the NBA’s all-time leading scorer would play for his 24th professional season. In a social media post at the time, James described the choice as his “last decision” and said he had strongly considered retirement before committing to one more chapter of his career. “I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time,” James wrote, according to NBA.com. He signed a two-year contract that includes a player option for the second season, positioning him for a potential 25th NBA season if he chooses to exercise it.

The move places James alongside center Joel Embiid, guard Tyrese Maxey, forward Jaylen Brown and rookie guard VJ Edgecombe on a Philadelphia roster that finished last season 45-37 and secured the Eastern Conference’s seventh seed. The Sixers pulled off a stunning first-round comeback against the Boston Celtics, winning that series 3-1, before being swept in four games by the New York Knicks in the conference semifinals. James’ decision to leave the Los Angeles Lakers, where he spent parts of eight seasons and won an NBA championship in the pandemic-affected 2020 bubble, marks his third different franchise in six years and comes after a 2025-26 season in which he averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds across 60 regular-season games, numbers that climbed to 23.2 points, 7.3 assists and 6.7 rebounds during the playoffs at age 41.

Jackson’s take has become one of several prominent voices weighing in on how the move affects James’ legacy. Analyst Byron Scott separately noted that most fans judge James against the same historical figures Jackson referenced, pointing out that legends including Jordan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar built the bulk of their championship legacies largely with a single franchise, unlike James, who is now entering a third different team in six seasons. Sixers coach Doc Rivers has also publicly questioned whether Philadelphia’s current roster construction is built to win a title, while Shaquille O’Neal has cautioned about the pressure now facing the group following James’ arrival.

The debate arrives during what has already been described as an unusually turbulent 2026 NBA offseason, one that also included high-profile trades sending stars Giannis Antetokounmpo, LaMelo Ball, Ja Morant, Jaylen Brown and Kawhi Leonard to new teams. Even amid that broader shakeup, James’ free agency decision was widely regarded as the offseason’s most closely watched storyline, drawing attention from figures including NBA Commissioner Adam Silver as speculation mounted over where the league’s most decorated active player would ultimately land.

For his part, James has given no indication that outside commentary about his legacy is shaping how he approaches this next stage of his career. According to reporting from ClutchPoints and other outlets covering his decision, James remains focused on pursuing what would be a fifth NBA championship as he enters this new chapter with the Sixers, regardless of how analysts like Jackson choose to score the move within the sport’s ongoing debate over its greatest player of all time.
