Just don't be one of those guys who gets a smaller amount of ram now thinking that you can get more later if you need it. Mixing ram is terrible.

People usually buy PCs instead of consoles because they want to use it for other stuff than gaming, and that "other stuff" usually needs more CPU than GPU power. So don't cheap out too much.

Browser and video editing are often actually bottlenecked by the RAM first and foremost.

If you buy affordable drives which don't support the latest standards anyway and don't hook super special peripherals to your PC, you can usually save a lot of money on the motherboard.

When I do build a PC, I'm going to go a little more expensive on the case and motherboard, just to future-proof the system. CPU and RAM too. GPU is the most expensive part so I'd wait and just get something like a mid range RTX 30-series card.

You ABSOLUTELY NEED to read your motherboard’s qualified vendor list BEFORE upgrading RAM. You can buy more RAM with faster speeds but if it’s incompatible with your motherboard, you’re going to have serious problems or problems that seem catastrophic. Not to mention that this upgrade can be very expensive!

For the first time i gave a thumbs down on a ltt video. Maybe I am too sick because I am in bed with covid but if i were computer illiterate the basic information you get is:

It depends what balanced is, do some research.

Well thanks for nothing then. At least a hint to 'the last pc build video you ever need' would have helped a beginner more than all content of this video.

Balancing is the stupidest advice I’ve ever heard.

Back in the day they found a way to put a north bridge in a NuBus Card in a Mac. So you got a G3 processor in a lowest performance first generation PowerPC. HORRIBLY unbalanced. The thing screamed. Just lightning performance. Was the disc and video and ran slow? Yup. Did that mean it was a bad upgrade? Of course not!

Likewise I’ve put powerful video cards in a PC that would barely run Windows 7 with an SSD. I could run games that were supposed to require CPU two generations newer.

If you game throw all your money on that GPU. If you are running video editing throw all your money on that CPU.

My application require lots of gpu memory, it is more important than gpu and cpu speed or ram.
But it is harder to get a 32gb+ gpu.
I cant find any balanced for my uses.
Why dont we have something like a 4060 with 24gb? The only way to get 24gb is spending 1800$ in a 4090? It is not what i would call balanced option.

  10. @DelScully

    October 23, 2024 at 7:27 am

my issue is I made my build a few months before the 4080 was coming out (thinking I would buy that) so I bought a 3060ti to go with a 13700k and then realized the 4080 series was garb so for over a year now I've been stuck with the 3060 ti! Im just praying the 5080 is actually half decent so I can finally upgrade and feel good about it or Intel's battlemage is dece.. I'd gladly ditch nvidia.

    commenting just from thumbnail,
expensive does not mean its similarly balanced
i got a 3070 and never again wanted cpu bottleneck so got a expensive 5900x
afaik the 5900x is super useful only as a productive work cpu due to its many cores/threads
it still games in vr but not ideal performance and still bottlenecks. i wouldve probably been better off with a cheaper cpu that was designed for gaming (few but fast cores/threads)

  15. @nobody8685

    October 23, 2024 at 7:27 am

It's actually really hard to balance medium-tier components together without giving more to one side, this is simply because of the sheer number of medium-tier PC components and their pros & cons compared to how many are there for high-tier stuff.
Overall, the more expensive the PC build is, the easier is to come up with components for it to make it well balanced. As you are limited by the technological advancement and not your budget and inteligence ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
(on consumer grade components I mean, not enterprise stuff)

no one outside of heavy enthusiast/prosumer/for work/niche builds needs ATX. Just get an mATX motherboard, and case, and save money

my mATX case fits 3 3.5 hard drives, 4 2.5 hard drives, a PSU of any length. I personally even have 2 GPUs, a 280mm radiator, and still have space for another 120mm radiator

Good that I switched to a laptop. I really don't care anymore about graphics because modern graphics and effects are ugly and hurt me physically in many cases and I prefer 30fps in modern games, otherwise it's just too exhausting. The portability and power draw on a laptop is also a huge plus. I care more about saving my money on power these days than anything else. And if that means I have to spend 700 used for a Laptop instead of 400 new for PC parts, so be it (My last PC was about 400 Euros, without GPU of course, an APU was enough for me, the laptop actually has more power while drawing less power)

I´m playing shooters, single player games, racing games, sandbox games with loads of mods and also I´m using my PC for CAD, Adobe Creative Cloud and sometimes even video editing. So depending on what I do, all components will be at their limits at some point.

Years ago I was on the NZXT Discord server a lot and often helped people with their PC builds, and there was SO MANY people that had like a $600-1000 build, but wanted an AIO. Like listen man, at this budget, you're wasting money. I always tried to explain but basically no one ever listened because they wanted the pretty AIO look

I have a mid range PC with a Ryzen 5 3500 and a 1660 super, for over 5 years now, and I play games occasionally but lately I realized my CPU was holding my GPU back even though it was not a high end GPU. Upgraded to 5 5600X last week and it has made a massive difference in the GPU-CPU performance.

    USB port numbers… Yeah…

I got too much devices, and connects half of them on hubs, and hubs are not that stable as motherboard…

I recently upgraded my GPU to a 4060 from a 1660 and while it's nice to have ray tracing, DLSS and frame generation, i notice that my i5 9400f is now HEAVILY holding back my system now. I constantly have bad frame times and stutter. Sometimes even freezing for seconds at a time in certain games. I really should get a new MB and CPU

Why doesn't Techtips/Tech quickie ever talk about relevant consumer techbology in 2024? PC bottlenecks were relevant 15 years ago when PC hardware didnt precision boost overclock itself automatically and DLSS didn't exist.

I want to see Linus talk about home automation networks and new networking standards. Relevant lifestyle technology that people actually need tips for.

Ive been a fan of Linus for a long time, but PC bottlenecks are not a relevant issue in 2024 unless you are a teenager begging your parents for a pc

the best upgrade i ever made to my pc was the hard drive and ram… i started with 4gb of ram lmao. to be fair, this was at the peak of supply shortages so it was stupid expensive even for 4gb😢. I also got an NVME SSD. Omg, I barely have to wait for anything! It boots in seconds and loads stuff like 20x faster!

But only being used by a grandma using MS word and only plays solitaire

  33. @kevinconnell6541

    October 23, 2024 at 7:27 am

I would say the motherboard of choice and CPU of choice are the most crucial. If you like to Game then a good GPU would be 3rd place. in my opinion. I feel like in my current system my CPU and RAM are my bottle necks right now and behind that would be storage. I have a small 1TB M.2 SSD at 2,000MB's data transfer speeds and then a 6TB HDD 🙁

  34. @rizzo6783

    If I get a 4070 can my i7 8700 handle it?

  35. @sethmeaseles3301

    October 23, 2024 at 7:27 am

I see so many people online suggest that people buy an $800-$1k gpu and a $600 cpu but then buy a $30 cooler and maybe $30 worth of case fans if they don't get a case that comes with them. It's crazy to me to get such high end parts but then dont take care into making sure you can cool them effectively. Sure you can get top tier performance but you can't take advantage of it if it thermal throttles for 80% of its life. Never neglect your cooling folks.

  36. @VaulTec

    October 23, 2024 at 7:27 am

In general it better to have a stronger CPU since having the overhead gives you options. Like having a lot of background programs discord, browser with unlimited amounts of tabs/YouTube playing, wallpaper engine, whatever

  37. @heinrichagrippa5681

    October 23, 2024 at 7:27 am

While having a slightly unbalanced build that is biased toward the CPU might be sub-optimal in the short-term, the long-term reason for doing it anyway is that I expect to get more mileage out of the CPU than the GPU. Unlike the '90s, if you get a solid CPU now, it could easily be a decade before it starts to feel like it's not quite able to keep up. You can skip several generations of CPUs if the one you have is still capable of more performance that you need, whereas GPUs are still advancing at a pace where what's upper-mid-tier could end up seeming kind of underwhelming within a couple generations. If I splurge a bit on the CPU at the cost of the (initial) GPU, it's because I'm anticipating I'll be upgrading the GPU within a couple years anyway, and would rather have my invest in a CPU with lots of head-room to accommodate those later GPUs.

  38. @LIA-52

    October 23, 2024 at 7:27 am

Even though I prefer the best fidelity, GPUs are so expensive, that I now run a 1080ti with a 7900X3D

Purpose of Class

Discusses what servers are and misconceptions about them.
Topics Covered

Definition of a Server
Server Operating Systems
Server Hardware
Server Functions
Class Notes

Defining a Server
A server provides services to other computers on a network. A server can be an expensive Windows 2008 Server, or a simple Windows XP Home computer with a shared printer.
Operating System
Server Operating Systems are more stable and secure then Desktop operating Systems
Server Operating Systems and their Software are generally much more expensive then Desktop counterparts
Server Operating Systems are generally not as easy to administer as Desktop Operating Systems
Hardware
A Server can use ANY hardware to operate, but Server Hardware is made to be more reliable then desktop hardware.
Xeon Processors are standard processors used in servers
Redundant Power Supply allow one power Supply to Fail while the Server is Still Running
RAID — Allows for a Hard Drive to fail without crashing the Server
ECC RAM is RAM that does a self test. It is more stable then regular RAM, but much more expensive.
Types of Servers
Software features — multiple features can be on one box
Security and Authentication gives access to network resources
Print Servers share printers on a network
File Servers share files on a network
Web/ FTP Servers provide websites on a network
Mail Servers provide email routing for an organization
Database Servers store data for outside applications
Remote Access Servers allow Internet users to access the internal network. Usually a VPN connection.
Final Thoughts…
Buy what you need… Many people buy a $5000 server when all they need is a Dell bargain bin system. .
