Transfer deadline day LIVE: Enzo Fernandez to Man City agreed, Man Utd call on Valverde, Arsenal hunt

Published

on

By Bobby Vincent

Chelsea and Manchester City have reached a £125million agreement for the transfer of Enzo Fernandez in the final hours of transfer deadline day.

A summer-long transfer saga is reaching its conclusion with Fernandez finally getting his wish to reunite with former Blues head coach Enzo Maresca at the Etihad Stadium. Sources have told football.london that Chelsea have agreed to sell the 25-year-old midfielder for £125m to their Premier League rivals.

That is a club-record sale from Chelsea, who managed to get more than the £120m they initially quoted Man City this summer. As soon as Fernandez made his desire to depart Stamford Bridge clear back in May, Chelsea informed potential suitors they would need to splash £120m to acquire the Argentina international.

Those terms were on the table until earlier this month. Chelsea increased their price tag after no club engaged with their unofficial transfer deadline for Fernandez, at 5pm on August 14. City opened talks with the Blues officially on Monday evening – and that was the first time there has been direct club-to-club contact all summer – and saw an early offer rebuffed for the Argentine.

After an intense day of negotiations on Tuesday, deadline day, the two clubs have finally reached an agreement. Fernandez has been desperate to leave Stamford Bridge all summer-long and while Chelsea were happy to keep him as part of Xabi Alonso’s squad, they were never going to turn down a joint-British transfer record.

The sale of Fernandez means Chelsea will bank beyond £400m this summer, including add-ons. That is a record amount and surpasses the £340m that Paris Saint-Germain received this summer.

In the final hours of the window, Chelsea want to add at least one more player. Manu Kone remains an option but there is an acceptance that striking a deal with AS Roma will prove complicated with manager Gian Piero Gasperini desperate to keep hold of the France international beyond the 11pm deadline.

A deal for Lamine Camara looks more straightforward but nothing is agreed at the time of writing. Chelsea saw a £38.5m offer turned down by AS Monaco for the Senegal international earlier on in the day but remain locked in talks with the Ligue 1 club.

How medieval infertility was experienced and understood

How medieval infertility was experienced and understood

Infertility was a source of stress and sadness for some medieval couples, as it is for modern ones. It was a personal matter, but also a public one. Both families and the church assumed that the purpose of marriage was to have children. Couples who did not conceive often faced questions and scrutiny.

My research on infertility in the middle ages uncovers the ways in which medieval people explained reproductive problems and tried to enhance their fertility.

A merchant couple from 14th-century Italy – Francesco and Margherita Datini – were childless after several years of marriage. A family friend wrote to Francesco to praise the couple’s financial success and added “but I would rather see [Margherita] become fatter by making children than in gathering money”.

In this situation, medieval people drew on the knowledge and tools available to them. They did so within a very different social, medical and religious context from modern families – but like modern couples they had to make sense of different kinds of information and advice.

We know from their letters that the Datinis consulted a physician, but their friends and family also recommended other solutions. Margherita’s sister offered to buy her a poultice (a mixture of herbs and fats placed on the skin) to wear on her stomach. It was being sold by a female healer and was said to have worked for other women. She also recommended a belt to wear which was inscribed with prayers.

In the same letter Margherita’s brother-in-law added that it would be better to seek God’s favour through charitable giving. Despite this advice, the couple never went on to have a child – although we know from their letters that Francesco had illegitimate children with other women.

The Datinis’ letters are mainly practical and don’t tell us how they felt about their struggles to conceive, but it’s easy to imagine that some of this well-meaning advice might have caused them stress.

Other medieval accounts do talk about both women and men who were saddened by reproductive problems. For example, in late 12th-century England, the biographer of a hermit, Godric of Finchale, told of a husband and wife who came to the holy man after a series of miscarriages or stillbirths. He said “they were both deeply distressed and felt that God’s judgment was standing over them in a dreadful way”.

How infertility was explained

There were two main explanations for infertility in the medieval period.

One was the medical explanation. Medieval European physicians drew their knowledge of reproduction from the Hippocratic medicine of ancient Greece, which was expanded in the Arabic-speaking world and then translated back into Latin in the 11th to 13th centuries. This explained infertility – and other medical conditions – mainly in terms of the theory of the humours.

This theory held that everyone’s body contained a balance of four qualities: heat, cold, moisture and dryness. If these qualities became too unbalanced, then this could damage your fertility. Infertility and sexual dysfunction were especially linked to too much cold, and so the solution was to consume medicines and foods deemed to be “hot”, including spices such as cinnamon and ginger. Humoral explanations have long been superseded by modern biomedicine, but for medieval people they offered a neat, intellectually coherent system that offered a pathway to treatment.

The other explanation was religious. The Bible told of women such as Sarah, Rachel, Hannah and Elizabeth who were infertile at first, but then went on to conceive a special child miraculously – even sometimes in old age.

Mindful of these biblical examples, medieval theologians and preachers taught that God could grant or withhold fertility directly, if he chose to. This belief could potentially be used to criticise couples who did not conceive, by implying they had done something to incur God’s anger. It lay behind the advice to Margherita and Francesco to seek God’s favour through charity. But more often churchmen argued that God caused infertility for his own purposes, not as a punishment.

The Golden Legend – a collection of biographies of the saints hugely popular in medieval Europe – stressed that “God punishes not nature, but sin, and therefore when he closes a woman’s womb, he does this in order to open it miraculously later on”.

These explanations were complementary rather than competing: God might work through natural causes. For medieval couples, they offered reasons for infertility, and actions to take, and so they offered hope and reassurance. But it’s much harder to know how couples felt when they didn’t go on to conceive. That’s because most of the surviving sources focus on the success stories where the longed-for baby arrived after medical treatment or a prayer to the right saint. Doctors and the collectors of miracle stories didn’t often mention their failures.

These historical stories of infertility show how medieval couples approached their fertility differently, but their experiences of negotiating medicine, faith and family still resonate.

‘Divisive’ Channel 4 true crime series returns with restaging of teenagers’ real-life murder trial

Published

on

Manchester Evening News

The series sees actors take the parts of the legal teams and judges

A ‘divisive’ Channel 4 true crime series has returned with a restaging of a teenager’s real-life murder trial.

The station has been putting out more true crime content than usual in recent weeks. Last week marked the premiere of The Murder Detective.

The observational documentary tells the inside story of the seven-year-long mission to find out who murdered journalist Lyra McKee in Derry in 2019 and secure justice for her family. Lyra, 29, was shot and killed when a dissident republican gunman opened fire during rioting in Londonderry on April 18, 2019.

The hour-long episode followed detectives trying to uncover the truth of what happened for themselves, with the murder weapon missing and not one of the 150 people on the street when Lyra was killed willing to come forward.

Additionally, last week also saw Channel air the first two episodes of The Never Ending Murder. Initially airing on Amazon Prime Video in 2023, four-part true-crime documentary series explores Nicola Payne’s disappearance, who was 18 when she vanished in 1991 in Coventry.

On top of this, Sunday night (August 30), marked the return of 24 Hours in Police Custody. The Ambush, a special two-part edition of the programme, tells the case of a 17-year-old boy who was left critically injured on the roadside after suffering catastrophic head injuries.

On Monday evening (September 1), The Jury: Murder Trial returns for its third series. Premiering in 2024, each series is a verbatim re-enactment from court records of a real murder trial.

The series sees actors take the parts of the legal teams and judges while the jurors are people drawn from every-day life. The series questions whether or not juries randomly drawn from citizens from all backgrounds without legal qualifications are suitable for making a just decision in cases .

Season one saw the re-enactment of a real case in which a man admitted to killing his wife with a hammer after two months of marriage, hoping for a verdict of the lesser crime of manslaughter. The second series followed a woman accused of having stabbed her partner to death during an alleged attempt by him to strangle her during a domestic altercation.

Series three is once again taking a forensic look at the inner workings of justice. Filmed over ten days, it examined the real-life case of two brothers, one aged just 14, who are charged with the murder of their stepdad.

The jury, made up of twelve members of the public, will have to decide whether it was a calculated act of revenge or an act of desperation. Adding to the complexity is that the siblings admit to stabbing their stepdad whilst he was sleeping

Viewers will see if the jury comes to the same conclusion from the exact same evidence presented in the same way. Often, other factors play a part in their decision that didn’t originally.

Over on the true crime Reddit page, viewers have been left unsure in the past whether they’re fans of the series which won ‘Best Reality’ at the 2025 British Academy Television Awards.

@bandlj said: “I like the idea of this but I don’t think you can really recreate a true trial because obviously all the witnesses are lying/acting and you could easily have someone that’s supposed to be honest that’s just a bad actor etc. I guess it’s still interesting to see how the jurors react to the process though.”

@FluidSupport4772 wrote: “Being a keen true crime follower I was excited about this judicial experiment, but found it truly disappointing. In real life a jury will only deliberate after all the evidence has been heard and with everyone fully present. These 2 jury’s were deliberating at lunch and coffee break.”

@Gaz-a-tronic commented: “It’s been eye opening to see how different people can deeply personally identify with various aspects of the case, and how they can give others perspective and insight that they wouldn’t have on their own. I think a rich and diverse set of life experiences are very useful.”

The Jury airs on Channel 4 at 9pm on Tuesday, September 1

Police keep the peace after protesters confront travellers who ripped up wildlife haven in ‘bank holiday land grab’

Police have been maintaining order at a wildlife haven after protesters confronted travellers who ripped it up in a bank holiday land grab.

Hundreds of outraged locals flocked to the field in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, to vent their anger at the work that began on the land on August 29.

Furious residents protested by camping on the land near Rod Stewart‘s sprawling Grade II-listed 18th century mansion, Durrington House, overnight, ensuring no more work took place.

And the protest was victorious on Monday when workers at the encampment left the field after a police and council visit.

East Hertfordshire District Council ordered a stop to the work involving diggers and bulldozers that evening and an injunction has since temporarily blocked any further development.

Officers remain on the site which is surrounded by fencing, contains a static home and four heavy-duty diggers.

Aerial pictures of the site, taken over the bank holiday weekend, show a concrete surface had been laid as well as fences used to create five plots.

Two caravans were parked at the wildlife spot where muntjac deer are said to roam, despite the temporary injunction prohibiting any further work or occupying of the lot.

Labour MP for Hertford and Stortford, Josh Dean said he was ‘appalled by the flagrant disregard for the rules and the damage that has been done to our environment.

‘The law needs to change to ensure that local authorities have the powers they need to bring this kind of activity to a swift end,’ he said.

Hertfordshire Constabulary previously told the Daily Mail that officers entered the site this morning and ‘all those who had unauthorised access, left the site peacefully’.

A spokesperson for the force said: ‘This was following an amended High Court injunction, which was granted and served this morning.

‘The High Court injunction meant that anyone found carrying out activities prohibited by the injunction – including bringing caravans on site and occupying the land for carrying out development – could be arrested by the police. No arrests were necessary.’

A council spokesperson said: ‘Early on Saturday… we became aware of works taking place on the land off Sheering Mill Lane, Sawbridgeworth, following reports from local residents.

‘Heavy vehicles and construction equipment had entered the site. The land does not have planning permission for development.

‘We served a Temporary Stop Notice shortly after 10.45am on Saturday 29 August. We also made an urgent application to the High Court for an injunction.

‘We will continue to work with our partners and use the legal and enforcement options available to us to achieve this. A hearing has been scheduled for 15 September.

‘However, as works are continuing on the site, the council and its partners are doing everything possible to secure an earlier court date.’

Sawbridgeworth is the latest area to be targeted after huge lorries arrived on Friday morning with fences going up and roads being blocked.

In videos posted on social media, birds were heard chirping as work involving heavy machinery was carried out on greenbelt land.

It devastated residents who feared travellers had taken over and destroyed the precious wetland habitat and floodplain.

One neighbour, in her 50s who wished to be anonymous, has lived in the area all her life and told the Daily Mail she felt ‘powerless’ and ‘devastated’.

She said: ‘I believe they are travellers building a traveller site. Some people don’t want them anywhere, and I think they should go through all the steps that everyone else has to when it comes to planning and building.

‘They definitely don’t have permission – the order was ignored and they’ve continued to bring in diggers and all sorts of machines.’

The resident added that she and her neighbours are mostly saddened by the destroyed habitats of the protected wildlife, including bats, newts and nesting birds.

She said: ‘The reserve has been around for as long as life and within a day it was destroyed. It’s a total destruction of nature, it’s absolutely disgusting.

‘There’s a lady who lives right across the road from it and she’s in tears. We’re completely appalled by the destruction; it’s devastating to be so powerless in the situation.

‘It’s the bank holiday and no one has the chance to stop it before it’s too late, so they’ve got four days to destroy habitats’.

It follows a trend that has seen travellers purchase land, often in leafy parts of the Home Counties, and then set up unauthorised sites.

D4vd’s family sells Texas home and takes out a loan as he struggles to afford attorneys amid trial over Celeste Rivas murder

Published

A day after his attorneys quit his defense and left a public defender to represent him, TMZ reported that D4vd's father Dawud Burke sold a home in Texas for more than $225,000 and took out a loan on another home for $138,000; D4vd is pictured in June 2025 in Paris

The embattled singer D4vd’s family has reportedly been shoring up funds in recent months, following a shocking court hearing in which his high-powered legal team quit his defense.

D4vd’s father, Dawud Burke, sold a house in Texas earlier this summer for more than $200,000, according to real estate records obtained by TMZ.

The publication also reported that the 21-year-old performer’s father took out a loan just months earlier.

The financial moves came shortly before D4vd (real name: David Anthony Burke) appeared to be having financial troubles, as a public defender has now taken on his defense in his trial over the sexual assault and murder of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas.

D4vd also pleaded not guilty to Rivas’s murder, as well as to charges of child sex abuse and mutilation in connection with her death.

The Daily Mail has reached out to D4vd’s representatives, the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s office, and an attorney for D4vd’s parents, Dawud and Colleen Burke, to request comment.

D4vd, who pleaded not guilty on Monday to 14-year-old Celeste Rivas’s murder, as well as to charges of child sex abuse and mutilation in connection with her death, appears to have struggled with money as he tries to mount a defense

According to real estate records viewed by TMZ, in early July the singer’s father sold a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house with 1,819 square feet in Houston, Texas, for $229,000.

And in July, Dawud Burke had allegedly taken out a loan for $138,000 on a three-bedroom, one-bathroom home with 1,260 square feet, according to the publication.

According to TMZ, D4vd’s father currently resides in a 4,426-square-foot home located in Hempstead, Texas. It features four bedrooms and three bathrooms and reportedly has an estimated value of around $850,000.

The family money moves come after D4vd’s attorneys Blair Berk, Marilyn Bednarski and Regina Peter told the judge overseeing his trial on Monday that they could no longer represent the singer.

‘This morning the court granted our request to withdraw as counsel and appointed the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office, after it was determined David qualified for appointed counsel,’ the trio said in a statement to TMZ.

‘We continue to support David and his defense against these serious charges,’ the lawyers continued. ‘We are grateful that the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office has taken over the representation and that David has a highly capable and committed team of attorneys and investigators behind him.’

At the same hearing, Burke pleaded not guilty to Rivas’s murder, as well as to charges of child sex abuse and mutilation in connection with her death.

The Daily Mail previously reached out to D4vd’s attorneys for comment but has not yet received a response.

In taking over D4vd’s case, the public defender reportedly said the singer was indigent, raising questions about his finances.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Berk said in court that D4vd had asked the public defender’s office to replace his counsel.

Berk and the other attorneys didn’t share a reason for why their client was no longer requesting their services, and Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo quickly agreed to the change in representation.

A spokesperson for the LA County Public Defender’s Office told the Daily Mail that they were not able to share D4vd’s ‘financial information,’ but they confirmed that a look at his finances indicated that he was eligible to be represented by a public defender.

It’s unclear how the performer is now unable to pay for his high-powered defense team, as it was previously shown in court that he had already earned millions from a lucrative recording contract prior to going on trial.

In a statement to the LA Times, LA County Deputy Public Defender Walid Kandeel said: ‘We recognize the loss of life underlying the allegations and extend our sympathies to those who are grieving. At the same time, David Burke is entitled to a defense that takes his circumstances seriously and carefully examines the evidence. We are committed to providing him with that defense.’

Prosecutors previously revealed that Rivas was not pregnant at the time of her death in April 2025.

Sources close to the Los Angeles County District Attorney told the Daily Mail in late July that prosecutors ‘don’t believe she was pregnant at the time she was killed,’ adding that ‘her body’ had been in ‘a state of decomposition.’

D4vd is accused of fatally stabbing Rivas, then using a chainsaw to dismember her remains in an inflatable pool he had in a garage of a home in the Hollywood Hills he had been living at, according to prosecutors.

The remains of Rivas had been found in a Tesla that had been registered to Burke on September 8, 2025, prosecutors said, adding that ‘small, blue plastic fragments’ from the inflatable pool had been found embedded in the victim’s remains.

The latest in the case comes after D4vd had been ordered to stand trial in Rivas’ murder following a preliminary hearing in which prosecutors presented text messages that alluded to Rivas being pregnant and getting an abortion a year prior to her killing.

Los Angeles Police Department Detective Corey Farell said that records from D4vd’s phone alluded to a 2023 pregnancy and January 2024 abortion, with Rivas telling him, ‘Of course it’s yours David.’

Farell told the court that D4vd subsequently inquired with Rivas about her medical appointment and commented that he felt as if he’d been ‘waiting for test results.’

The detective said that the phone also contained images of child sexual abuse material involving Rivas that prosecutors did not present in the hearing, due to their graphic nature.

Amid testimony from Farell, Rivas’ mother Mercedes Martinez wept as she walked out of the courtroom with the slain teen’s father Jesus Rivas.

Deputy District Attorney Beth Silverman said: ‘This is too much, I know how hard this is.’

Testimony presented from Farell in the preliminary hearing Monday indicated that Rivas’ parents had signed a form on September 23, 2024 granting consent for Rivas to go to London with D4vd from September 24 to October 5, 2024, People reported.

D4vd had bought plane tickets via United Airlines for a trip to London, followed by a trip to Texas, where members of his family reside, Farell said.

Farell said that Rivas’ family knew about her link to the musician, and that in 2024, they had traveled to Las Vegas as well as Houston.

Patrick Steinfeld, an attorney for Rivas Hernandez’s family, said after the hearing that they were ‘horrified that the defense attorneys brought up evidence to put the blame on a 14-year-old girl,’ according to the AP

Los Angeles Judge Charlaine Olmedo subsequently said that enough evidence had been presented to proceed to trial. The judge ordered that D4vd remain in custody with no bail, with an arraignment slated for August 31.

Prosecutors argued that the evidence to proceed to a trial was overwhelming.

‘Based on the mountains of evidence presented,’ Silverman said, ‘all of the allegations have been proved way beyond the standard required.’

Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman said outside court that prosecutors presented only a ‘small fraction’ of the evidence they have.

They are still weighing whether to seek the death penalty. D4vd is eligible for it after Judge Olmedo also found probable cause for lying in wait, killing for financial gain and killing a potential witness. These are special circumstances in a crime that would allow prosecutors to pursue the death sentence, if D4vd is found guilty.

Dual Gold Cup champion Galopin Des Champs has died tragically just days following the announcement of his retirement from the sport.

The Cheltenham hero of 2023 and 2024, who claimed 12 Grade One victories throughout his career, succumbed to injuries suffered in a field accident on Wednesday morning at Ruby Walsh’s County Kildare farm.

Only last Thursday had owners Audrey and Greg Turley confirmed his retirement, after an injury prevented his attempt at securing a third consecutive Gold Cup title in March.

Ruby Walsh released a statement to Racing TV saying: “Sadly Galopin Des Champs suffered an injury in his field this morning and could not be saved.”

The champion had been sent to Walsh’s care with hopes of beginning a new chapter in equestrian sport alongside his eldest daughter Isabelle, reports the Irish Mirror.

Walsh continued: “He was checked a few times throughout the morning but late in the morning when I went to get him for exercise I found him with a severe injury, high up on his near front leg.

“He was attended to by our vets immediately but x-rays revealed extensive unrepairable damage.

“He was a fabulous racehorse whose short time with us has left lots of broken hearts but none more so than those of Greg, Audrey and Sarah Turley and Adam Connolly who looked after him for so long.

“He will be sadly missed.”

Under Willie Mullins’ training, Galopin Des Champs achieved three Cheltenham Festival victories, including the 2021 Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle before his subsequent Gold Cup triumphs. Having triumphed in 15 of his 26 career races, the horse etched his name into the record books with a remarkable hat-trick of Irish Gold Cup victories at Leopardstown’s Dublin Racing Festival, celebrated in truly memorable fashion.

Widely regarded as one of the finest chasers of the 21st century, his retirement last week prompted his owner Audrey Turley to reflect fondly: “We’ve had the best time of our lives, we really have.

“We never thought this would happen to us. We’ve had the most wonderful time.”

When pressed on whether a single occasion stood out, she remarked: “Three Irish Gold Cups and the two at Cheltenham, it’s hard to pick out one. Every time it was just a wonderful surprise, it was just magnificent.

“I don’t know if I could say one day, maybe the first Cheltenham Gold Cup as that was just extraordinary – like something out of a dream, the joy it brought.

“The other day was in Leopardstown when he won the third (Irish) Gold Cup. Everybody was singing, `ole, ole, ole’ and that just made the hair stand up on the back of our necks.

“People love him and we still have people coming up on Instagram and TikTok saying, `we miss him, we miss him’. He was so well loved and deserved to be loved, he was just wonderful.

“Everybody did take to him and he was an unassuming character really when you think of it, but he just loved it – I think he enjoyed every bit of it himself.”
