Tottenham Hotspur have been fined £20,000 by the Football Association after accepting a charge of failing to control their players during the 4-1 win against West Ham United.

Both clubs were charged on Tuesday for failing to ensure their players “didn’t behave in an improper and/or provocative and/or violent way”.

Spurs admitted the charge and accepted the fine for the scuffle in last weekend’s game.

The altercation occurred after Mohamed Kudus kicked Spurs defender Micky van de Ven then pushed the Netherlands defender and midfielder Pape Matar Sarr in the face.

The Ghana winger was initially shown a yellow card but it was upgraded to a red after a review by the video assistant referee.

The 24-year-old will serve a three-match ban for his dismissal.

He was separately charged on Tuesday for improper conduct for an incident “after the offence he was sent off for”.

The former Ajax winger could serve an extra punishment on top of the three-game suspension if found guilty.

West Ham and Kudus have until Thursday to provide their responses.

Week 7 stats: 21-for-33 passing, 323 pass yards, two touchdown passes, no interceptions, 116.1 passer rating in 34-10 win over Tennessee Titans

Brady’s thoughts: “First up, one of my favorite players in the league, Josh Allen. He had 323 yards, two tuddies against the Titans on Sunday. They got off to a little bit of a slow start, but they came flying back. I love to see him cleaning up the turnovers. He’s yet to throw a pick this year. That’s incredible. Twelve touchdown passes, zero interceptions. Listen, they’re fresh off a trade, they got Amari Cooper in the mix. He had 66 yards and a touchdown in his first game as a Bill. They scored on every possession in the second half. So carrying that momentum into Week 8 at Seattle, which I’ll be on the call for, is going to be important if they want to get a win.”

Brady’s thoughts: “Giants fans, look away! Saquon made his return to MetLife and went off — 176 yards and a touchdown against his former team. He’s averaging 110 yards rushing  game. Philly needs another big game from Saquon this week as they take on Joe Burrow and the Bengals. That’s going to be a great game.”

Brady’s thoughts: “Russell Wilson, he proved why he should be the starter in his debut against the Jets on Sunday night. Mike Tomlin made a tough decision, but he got the job done. Russ came in, he threw for 264 yards, [accounted for] three total touchdowns, and the Steelers scored 37 points, their most in a game since 2021. Let’s see if Russell and the Steelers can win their second in a row as they take on the Giants on Monday night next week.”

Newcastle’s long, barren run without lifting a trophy is well publicised, with them last picking up major domestic silverware almost 70 years ago when they won the 1955 FA Cup final against Manchester City.

Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton for £45m in January 2023 and the team had the opportunity of glory just a month later but were beaten in the Carabao Cup final by Manchester United.

He said he had been “hurt”, external by the manner of his exit from Goodison Park after the Toffees “failed to thank” him for his services and initially struggled for form in the North East, failing to score in any of his 16 Premier League appearances during the remainder of that season.

Howe’s side, though, made a return to the Champions League with a fourth-placed finish, allowing Gordon to showcase his talent in Europe’s elite club competition.

They may have finished bottom of their group but the season was a success on an individual level for the player, who scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists in 48 games.

Since joining Newcastle from Everton, his goal and assist contributions have increased from 0.27 to 0.44 per game, while the number of chances he has created every 90 minutes has improved from 1.25 to 1.65.

Following the announcement of the new deal, boss Howe said Gordon had “grown as a player and as a person” during his time at Newcastle and he has continued to “prove just how good he is on the biggest stage”.

But despite a stellar showing in his first full season on Tyneside, his future seemed to be in real doubt in the summer as it looked at one stage that Gordon may leave to help the club balance its financial position.

Newcastle’s issues with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) meant they needed to sell before the 30 June deadline to comply. With the cut-off point fast approaching, the club found themselves needing to consider offers for one of Isak, Guimaraes or Gordon.

A boyhood Liverpool supporter – despite coming through at Everton – Gordon’s dream move was on the cards when Newcastle offered the Reds a price of £70m, as well as taking defender Jarell Quansah the other way in a separate deal.

But Liverpool turned down the proposal and Newcastle ended up doing business with Nottingham Forest instead, selling 21-year-old midfielder Elliot Anderson for £35m, and allowing winger Yankuba Minteh, 20, to go to Brighton for £30m.

Though they lost two potential stars of the future, the deals meant they could make up their PSR shortfall and, rather importantly, keep Gordon too.

Jayson Tatum continued Boston’s Banner 18 celebration by scoring 37 points and making eight of the Celtics‘ NBA record-tying 29 3-pointers on Tuesday as Boston ran away with a 132-109 victory over the New York Knicks on opening night.

Derrick White scored 24 points, Jaylen Brown added 23 and Tatum had 10 assists for the defending champions, who raised their NBA-most 18th championship banner to the rafters before the game. Boston led by as many as 35 points before missing its last 13 3-point attempts while trying to break the record.

Jalen Brunson scored 22 points for New York, and new addition Karl-Anthony Towns had just 12 points and seven rebounds.

With the Celtics leading by more than 20 points early in the third quarter, the TD Garden crowd’s attention strayed from the basketball game and it began chanting “Yankees Suck!”

The new-look Knicks were supposed to be the biggest threat to the Celtics in the Eastern Conference, but even after adding Towns and Mikal Bridges over the summer, they were no match for the team that finished 14 games in front last season.

Keating, who only turned 20 in the summer, exceeded expectation with City last season, and performed well above expected levels, in terms of the shots she saved.

That earned her an England call-up at the end of 2023, but she has been rotated with Ayaka Yamashita this season, and has not started a WSL game.

Moorhouse is much older at 29 and has not had a straightforward path into the England set-up – she was only called up for the first time in the summer, and is yet to win a full cap, but the way she is playing at the moment is what justifies her place.

Equally, you could argue Sophie Baggaley deserves to be in the squad based on how well she’s playing for Brighton, but Moorhouse’s selection is a reminder to everyone that just because someone is not playing in the WSL, it doesn’t mean they are not capable players.

Moorhouse left the WSL in 2020 to move to Bordeaux in France and, since 2022, has been with Orlando Pride in the United States.

Her story is an example of how all players need to find coaches and environments where they feel comfortable, understood and allowed to do what they are good at. It’s also a reminder that no one’s path is every straightforward or easy and that you have to be determined and resilient to make it to the top.

If you put all of that together, that’s how you see the best of any player and, in the past and present, it applies to Hampton and Earps too.

Fernando Valenzuela, the Mexican-born phenom for the Los Angeles Dodgers who inspired “Fernandomania” while winning the NL Cy Young Award and Rookie of the Year in 1981, has died. He was 63.

The team said he died Tuesday night at a Los Angeles hospital, but did not provide the cause or other details.

His death comes as the Dodgers prepare to open the World Series on Friday night at home against the New York Yankees.

Valenzuela had left his color commentator job on the Dodgers’ Spanish-language television broadcast in September without explanation. He was reported to have been hospitalized earlier this month. His job kept him as a regular at Dodger Stadium, where he held court in the press box dining room before games and remained popular with fans who sought him out for photos and autographs.

Valenzuela was one of the most dominant players of his era and a wildly popular figure in the 1980s, although he was never elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. However, he is part of Cooperstown, which features several artifacts including a signed ball from his no-hitter in 1990.
