How To Stop Anxious Thoughts: The 10-Minute ‘Worry Time’ Habit Experts Recommend

How To Stop Anxious Thoughts: The 10-Minute 'Worry Time' Habit Experts Recommend

While it has gotten better in some ways over time, one thing that has been consistent throughout my experience of living with anxiety is that I cannot shake off thoughts and they will always take over my life. From doing monotonous things at home like showering or even the laundry to big life events like weddings, my brain during bad anxiety spells just does not stop.

I have tried so many things to manage this and while some have worked for a short while, my clever anxiety seems to out-smart them. Until this year finally, I seem to have it in a very manageable place and it’s because I, uh, make time for it.

One problem with anxious thoughts is that I am always trying to beat them, argue with them or even push them away. However, saying to myself “we don’t have time to worry about this right now” and scheduling a specific ten minutes to let myself worry and ruminate seems to have finally done the trick. I don’t even need the full ten minutes these days..

The science behind scheduling time to be anxious

Clinical psychologist Annie Mueller explains to Psychology Today: “Scheduling worry time may seem like a paradox (who wants to worry?). One reason worry time is effective is that it consolidates worry into a confined time period, rather than letting unhelpful thoughts run rampant at all times of day or night.”

This rings so true for me. Dealing with my anxious thoughts as if they were another thing on the to-do list has, over time, trained my brain to not ruminate quite so often because it’s not “in the schedule”.

Mueller also recommends taking time to write your worries out, saying: “Seeing worries written out can also help shift the anxious mind from rumination to problem-solving or acceptance. Worry time helps us organise and focus our thoughts rather than letting them spin out of control.”

Taking up journaling has made a huge difference in both how my anxiety manifests and how I see my thoughts. Once they’re written down, a weight is lifted and often, seeing them so plainly helps me tackle them more effectively. I am quite prone to catastrophic thinking and writing out my worst-case-scenarios has brought home how absurd my poor anxious brain can be.

If your worries are out of control like mine can be, speak to your GP for support.

Farage Claims Donations Row Stems From ‘Loose Pub Talk’

Farage Claims Donations Row Stems From 'Loose Pub Talk'

Nigel Farage has played down the accusations that Reform UK has accepted foreign donations and insisted the row stems from “loose pub talk”.

An undercover sting operation conducted by investigative group Verbatim and published in a Channel 4 News documentary has accused two top party aides of accepting US funds for the party.

Verbatim’s undercover reporters claim Reform’s head of policy James Orr and Farage’s close aide Dan Jukes took funding from a US company to commission three supposedly independent polls at £32,500 earlier this year.

British electoral law says political donations can only be made by someone eligible to vote in the UK or a UK-registered company.

The report also says Jukes suggested a way to get around those electoral rules to secure a £500,000 donation from the US to the party.

Reform initially denied any wrongdoing and called the operation a “hoax”. Orr and Jukes then stood down from their party posts on Friday morning.

During a press conference at Reform’s annual get-together in Birmingham, Farage read out a statement defending his party over the accusations.

The party leader denied wrongdoing around the poll and how it was paid for, instead pointing out names of potential other donors were bleeped out in the footage.

Farage said: “What is more problematic is loose pub talk, including a couple of boasts that simply were not true.

“So in the video, when he [Jukes] says we’ve done it with X, we’ve done it with Y – well, the reason Channel 4 haven’t broadcast the names of X and Y is because it isn’t true.

“Donations from the names that were mentioned had not occurred, don’t exist on the old comms site, don’t exist in our accounts.

“And while I’m aware that our people were pushed and pushed and pushed into saying these things, the comments were injudicious at best.

“Neither of these men was authorised to act in that way. Accordingly, they’ve stepped down pending an investigation.”

Reform UK says it is conducting an internal investigation into what happened but denies any wrongdoing.

The Electoral Commission said it is “in touch” with the Metropolitan Police after Channel 4 broadcast, though the police have not opened an investigation at the time of reporting.

Farage also accused the reporters of “entrapment”.

After a question from the BBC, he told the press conference: “Am I annoyed that these people even got to meet me? Yes I am, it should not have happened.

“The two individuals involved are not even part of our fundraising team, so they should have gone through the appropriate channels.

“Checks would have been made and they would never, ever have got to sit down at a table with me.”

Farage continued: “We have not taken an illegal penny in funding, that is important. The loose pub talk, frankly, there was a bit of boasting, a bit of jack-the-lad-dery going on there.

“If it was more serious than that, then I refer you back to the BBC’s question earlier, the names would have been put on to the programme and there would be a hell of a row. They don’t exist. Those donations don’t exist.”

Asked about the way Jukes, his close friend, is involved, Farage said: “I don’t like it at all. I’ve worked with Dan very closely for many years, many, many years, and I described it as loose pub talk, and that’s what it was, because what he said simply wasn’t true.

“He got put into a position and he should never have said what he did. I believe the investigation will find he should never have said one or two of the things that he said.”

The Clacton MP’s comments come after Farage admitted this morning to LBC that he is “not happy” about the row, but insisted: “The party has broken no laws. The party has not taken any dodgy money or anything like that whatsoever.”

Nigel Farage Claims He Can “Stop The Boats Forever” With National Rally Deal

Jordan Bardella and Nigel Farage signed a “memorandum of understanding” at Reform’s conference today (Alamy)

3 min read

Nigel Farage has unveiled a pact agreed with French far-right politician Jordan Bardella at his party’s conference, declaring it would “stop the boats forever”.

The Reform UK leader joined the president of France’s National Rally party on stage in Birmingham to sign a “memorandum of understanding”, which the pair said would be enacted if they both got into power.

Farage said the most significant part was an agreement that “the United Kingdom will intercept boats which launched from French shores and entered British territorial waters and will return the persons on board to France”, something not currently agreed by the two countries.

He added that it was the beginning of a “genuine new entente cordiale”, and that if National Rally – led by Marine Le Pen – wins the French presidency next year the country will “do their utmost to stop all departures” across the Channel.

It came after Bardella, the front-runner to become the next French prime minister, said in his speech to the Reform UK conference on Friday that a National Rally government “will do everything in its power to ensure that France is no longer the gateway for illegal migration into the United Kingdom”.

Bardella added: “The destination of illegal migrants entering France shall not be the United Kingdom – they should be returned to their countries of origin.

“The English Channel must no longer be a migration route to Dover or Folkestone, where thousands of people risk their lives in the hands of criminal smuggling gangs with the complicity of the leftists.

“Together, we must put an end to these daily routes. We must break the smuggler business model and together we must take back control of our borders.”

After the pair signed the memorandum on the main stage, they gave a joint press conference to journalists, which was dominated by questions around a report alleging that two Reform officials arranged party donations that breached UK electoral rules.

Farage sought to downplay the comments made by Reform officials in the documentary broadcast by Channel 4 and investigative reporting outfit Verbatim, calling them “loose pub talk”.

But two senior party figures – longstanding Farage aide Dan Jukes and Reform’s head of policy, Cambridge professor James Orr – have now stood down pending an internal investigation. The matter has also been referred to the police and the Electoral Commission.

Reform’s leader said “the party has done nothing wrong, taken no illegal money”, and instead claimed the story was “an exercise in entrapment”.

He added: “What is more problematic is loose pub talk, including a couple of boasts that simply were not true.”

Asked for his view on the investigation into donations, Bardella told reporters it “looks like a smokescreen”.

The French politician argued in his speech on the main stage of conference that public opinion was more important than the judgement of others, saying: “There is only one supreme judge – the people.”

Joe Lycett Broke Golden Celebrity Traitors Rule Before Season 2 Began

Joe Lycett Broke Golden Celebrity Traitors Rule Before Season 2 Began

We’re mere weeks away from the highly-anticipated return of The Celebrity Traitors, and one loose-lipped contestant is already giving away secrets.

Comedian Joe Lycett has admitted he broke one of the golden rules of the BBC reality show and told “everyone” he was appearing on the second season.

“We weren’t meant to ask people if they were doing it,” he shared during an appearance on Hits Radio. “You sign the NDA and they say don’t tell anyone you’re doing it. But if you search the word ‘traitors’ in my WhatsApp, I told everyone!”

“I was telling Uber drivers, I was telling everyone,” he quipped.

Before heading to the castle, Joe also spent a lot of energy trying to work out if anyone else from his inner circle was taking part in the celebrity version of the popular series.

He recalled: “I asked Joanne McNally, who is one of my favourite people in the world, and she said ‘I’m in as well’. So, the comics sort of worked out who was in because we all talk to each other.”

Although the BBC valiantly tried to keep the cast under wraps until the official announcement, Joe admitted they were fighting a losing battle.

“You don’t know the line-up, but I think they published it two days before we went in, and I was like: ‘Oh God’,” he revealed.

Because Joe knew who would be heading to the Scottish castle with him, he came with some preconceived notions about his co-stars.

“I got on with everyone, and I thought there were certain people I wouldn’t get on with when I saw the line-up,” he candidly added, although the unusually-reserved star didn’t elaborate any further or name names.

The Celebrity Traitors season two line-up is a who’s who of stars from the world of TV, music, film, sport and beyond, including Bella Ramsey, Michael Sheen and Ross Kemp.

Last month, the first trailer for season two of The Celebrity Traitors dropped, showing what we can expect from host Claudia Winkleman and the star-studded cast when the show returns at the end of the year.

Why Do We Cry? The 3 Types Of Tears And How Their Chemical Compositions Differ

Why Do We Cry? The 3 Types Of Tears And How Their Chemical Compositions Differ

I bloody love a good cry. A happy cry, sad cry, cathartic cry. If there are strong emotions happening, you can guarantee that I will be in tears at one point or another. I’m not alone, either. Despite us Brits having a reputation for a ‘stiff upper lip’, according to YouGov survey data, we’re a teary nation and 51% of us think it’s acceptable to cry at work.

I always thought that my love for crying was because I’m incredibly sensitive and constantly looking for an outlet and maybe that is a part of it but, actually, crying or just producing tears often has a biological purpose beyond letting emotions out. In fact, depending on the cause, our tears are made up of different chemical compositions.

The body is just so fascinating, isn’t it? We are all medical marvels.

Different types of tears and their purposes

Emotional tears

These are the tears that we are mostly familiar with. Ones that come from emotional state changes – good or bad – and the types that flow freely when we’re overwhelmed or, you could say, moved to tears.

Yale University explains: “Chemically different from basal and reactive tears, emotional tears contain leucine-enkephalin, a neuropeptide related to endorphins. It is this chemical that makes us feel better after we cry.”

Basal tears

Basal tears are responsible for keeping our eyes lubricated. They are our ‘baseline’ tears and are present in our eyes at all times.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, this can change with age. They explain: “Basal tear production slows with age, and this can lead to the development of dry eye. Dry eye is a common problem for people undergoing hormonal changes, especially women during pregnancy and menopause.”

Reflexive tears

Finally, we have reflexive tears. Cleveland Clinic explains:”Physical triggers cause reflex tears to form. They help wash away harmful irritants like dust, smoke or onion fumes. Reflex tears contain antibodies to help fight bacteria.”

How To Avoid Winter Colds: 4 Everyday Habits That Spread Germs, Says Pharmacist

How To Avoid Winter Colds: 4 Everyday Habits That Spread Germs, Says Pharmacist

Now that summer is winding down, it’s time to prepare ourselves for the joys of winter. You know, the festive season, snuggling under cosy blankets and the return of The Traitors in the new year. All of that and, uh, cold and flu season.

Despite it being so common to catch a cold during the chilly months, many of us rarely prepare ourselves in advance for it. In fact, Rachel Louise Jones, Pharmacy Superintendent at Superdrug Online Doctor warns that our everyday habits could be making us more susceptible to illness.

Four habits putting us at risk of winter bugs

Touching our faces too often

Back in the early days of Covid, many of us realised just how often we touch our faces. A small itch, resting our cheek on our hands etc. However, we’re also often touching door handles, toilets and our phones. This makes the transmission of germs very easy.

Jones explains “viruses are transferred from contaminated surfaces to mucous membranes and why breaking the habit can reduce exposure.”

She recommends keeping some antibacterial gel handy.

You only wash your hands before eating

Realistically, we should all be in the habit of washing our hands far more frequently than we currently do. The NHS recommends cleaning your hands at these times:

  • after using the toilet or changing a nappy
  • before and after handling raw foods like meat and vegetables
  • before eating or handling food
  • after blowing your nose, sneezing or coughing
  • before and after treating a cut or wound
  • after touching animals, including pets, their food and after cleaning their cages

Jones adds: “People often remember to wash their hands before meals but forget to do so when they get home from work, school or the supermarket. Washing your hands as soon as you arrive home can help prevent viruses being transferred around your house.

“Home is where people often relax their hygiene habits, meaning germs picked up outside can spread to family members.”

Sharing more than you think

Ever offer your friend a sip of your drink or a bite of your dinner? You could be passing germs. Jones says: “Sharing water bottles, lip balm, cutlery or even vaping devices can increase the spread of viruses between friends, family and colleagues.

“Some everyday items are easy to overlook but frequently come into contact with saliva.”

Not treating symptoms early

Many people wait until symptoms become severe before doing anything. While there’s no cure for the common cold, treating symptoms promptly can help you stay comfortable and make it easier to rest and recover.

Jones says “a pharmacist can recommend suitable treatments for symptoms such as congestion, sore throat, aches and fever, and advise when symptoms need further assessment.”

7 Best Sex Toy Gift Sets To Give Your Lover Or Treat Yourself With

Pleasure is the meaning of life, but somewhere along the way, we forget that.

Whether you’re busy with work, or constantly distracted by the online world, it can be easy to forget to connect with your partner, or yourself.

With cosy season coming up, though, we’re all going to be cooped up indoors, so there’s no better gift than finding an excuse for some rough and tumble beneath the sheets.

Look, I’m not going to lie to you: sex toys are expensive. Here’s a little hack I’ve learnt along the way: if you buy them in sets, you can save a significant chunk of money.

And you don’t have to keep them al for yourself. Be a generous lover, hand them out to your friends and lovers – they deserve to get in on the fun.

If you’re thinking about treating yourself or someone else, we’ve rounded up the best sex toy gift sets for people with vulvas or penises, and couples.

Best sex toy gift sets 2026

Who doesn’t want a box filled with Lovehoney bestsellers? No one I want to know!

Whether you’re playing alone, or with a partner, this set has all the makings of the best orgasm of your life – or multiple.

The pièce de resistance is the C-shaped We-Vibe toy, which can sit inside the vagina while the other end vibrates against the clit; you can even wear it during sex.

But there’s plenty more where that came from, because the box also boasts Lovehoney’s viral Rose sex toy, which is loaded with the brand’s famous Pleasure Air Technology. All you need to know is it sucks against your clit to stimulate oral sex and is one of the best feelings on the planet. Seriously.

Packed into the box is also a tiny bullet vibrator, massage oil, water-based lube, an eye mask, silk hand ties, and a deck of position of the week cards, so you’ll never run out of ways to use your new gear.

All of that for £99 – I’m blushing.

In case you needed a reminder: the vagina isn’t the only pleasurable hole in the body! If your lover is fond of feelings of fullness, using both of these toys at the same time will fill that hole for them – literally.

The wand vibrator is slightly curved to hit the G-spot with ease. Use it manually for penetration that’s as good as the real thing, or power it up to unlock three vibration modes and seven patterns.

Once you’re plenty turned on, coating that butt plug in plenty of lube and sliding it into your backdoor will add an extra level of stimulation, so you can have a blended orgasm from your A-spot and G-spot. Sweet.

G-spot + clit stimulation = heaven. At least in my world, anyway. If you want to gift a loved one a sure fire way to orgasm, this combo will earn you some brownie points, to say the least.

The set comes with a silicone-covered bullet with two rabbit ears that vibrate to the tune of three speeds and seven patterns against your C-spot, nipples, or whatever erogenous zones you fancy turning on.

Then there’s the wand vibrator, which is double ended, so it can be used solo or by two partners with vulvas: one who likes internal penetration and the other who prefers C-spot play.

To spice things up even more, the set comes with an orgasm gap, which leaves a tingly feeling wherever it’s applied.

In the box: Double-ended wand vibrator, rabbit bullet, orgasm gel, charger
Power:
IRechargeable
Features: Wand and bullet have three vibration speeds and seven patterns each
Waterproof: Yes.

Want to treat yourself the full works? If you’re not sure about what kind of stimulation you’re into, this set holds all the answers to a lifetime of pleasure.

With a G-spot wand, suction vibrator, and wand vibrator, you have all the tools for G-spot and clit stimulation any way you like it.

The only thing you’re missing is an anal sex toy – but we’ll leave you to explore our guide if that’s something you’re interested in.

Pleasure is for ever, not just for one night of the week. So why not get yourself a vibrator for each and every night?

Smile Makers has really got you covered with this gift set, which contains seven of its 11 vibrators, including a mix of some of its bestsellers and our favourites – at a banging bargain, too.

Monday starts with its beginner toy, the Billionaire, a bullet vibrator that can be used for internal and external play: whatever you feel like. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday see three more clit vibrators, from a simple small bullet to a lick-mimicking tongue-shaped vibe.

By Thursday you’ll get to the beginner’s anal vibrator, and Saturday welcomes a G-spot vibrator. Sunday is a whisper-quiet bullet designed in collab with Mumsnet for new mums, so there’s something for everyone.

Each of the toys is rechargeable, which means they’ll last for longer, and you can either share the boxes with friends or keep them all for yourself.

If you’re really at the start of your sex toy journey, seven days of this gift set will leave you with a very comprehensive collection.

Not only will you get all the basics, like a bullet vibrator, dildo, and mini wand, but you’ll also get a vibrating cock ring, which is ideal for couples’ play, a butt plug, and a male masturbator so that both the vulva and penis owners in your relationship can get off.

You might want to test the waters with a little BDSM, too, so there’s a silk tie in there that can be used for either tying your hands or covering your eyes – that’s where you can get creative.

Just because you’re long distance, doesn’t mean you have to give up your sex life. These two toys come at a generous discount as a set, and can be controlled via the Lovense app from wherever your lover is in the world.

You can sync the vibrations of the male masturbator with the vibrations of the butt plug, so you’re together even when you’re apart.

Or, if you feel like spicing things up a little, you can play roulette via the app to let a random third take control of both your orgasms. Exciting, huh?

Best laptops, CPUs, keyboards, and TVs for gaming

Best budget gaming laptop

Want to be able to take your gaming laptop with you wherever you go? This laptop not only comes in considerably cheaper than the Acer and Alienware models, but is also much lighter.

The battery life isn’t ideal, though, so you’ll need to keep it plugged in or carry the charger with you wherever you go.

If you don’t mind that, the refresh rate, resolution and display make this Acer worth it.

Display: 15.6-inch IPS LCD
Resolution: 1920 × 1080 (Full HD)
Refresh rate: 165Hz
GPU memory: 6GB GDDR6
RAM: 16GB
Storage: 512GB PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD
Response time: Not specified
Weight: 2.11kg

+ More lightweight and budget-friendly
+ Great display and refresh rate
+ Graphics have access to DLSS
– Storage might get full quickly
– You may want to upgrade your set up down the line, which could take away from it being lightweight and portable.

Best gaming laptop for high-FPS gaming

If you’re into competitive games, this Alienware laptop comes with a 300Hz refresh rate, so you won’t find it lagging unnecessarily.

It’s easily customisable, with a mechanical keyboard that has per key RGB, and the potential for upgrading your set up however you see fit, thanks to the fact it has plenty of RAM and storage configurations.

Not to mention, Alienware has great customer service. It comes with the option to pay for Dell’s premium warranty service that means you’ll have a technician at your door within 48 hours for problems that can’t be solved remotely, so you can rest assured that you’ll be able to game no matter what.

Display: 18-inch WQXGA
Resolution: 2560 × 1600
GPU memory: 24GB GDDR7
RAM: 32GB
Storage: 2TB SSD
Response time: Not specified (300Hz LCD, ClearMR 8000)
Weight: Up to 3.6kg
Ports: USB-A, USB-C/Thunderbolt 5, HDMI 2.1, Ethernet, SD card reader, headset jack

+ Alienware has great customer service if you have problems
+ Has a 560 × 1600/300Hz display, which is ideal for high frame rates
– Heats up quickly
– Quite heavy, so not portable
– The resolution isn’t great for AAA games

Best gaming laptop for maximum resolution

If you’re after a laptop that can deal with demanding games, this one from Lenovo comes highly rated. Not only does it come with an insane display, which boasts 4K 240Hz, Dolby vision and a 3ms response time, but Lenovo has loaded it with a custom cooling system so it can stay powerful for longer.

It’s also as good for using in your daily life (say, editing videos) as it is gaming. The webcam is as good as you could ask for from a gaming laptop: it comes in with 5MP and a privacy shutter, meaning it’s also suitable for work and personal use – which you’d expect at that price.

Display: IPS RTX 5090 + 18-inch 4K 240Hz display
Resolution: 3840 × 2400
GPU memory: 24GB GDDR7
RAM: 64GB DDR5

– Very expensive.

Best gaming chair for support

If you’re going to be sitting around for hours, this chair is designed to help keep you properly supported (and most importantly, comfortable) for long periods.

The armrests are adjustable to six different dimensions, while the backrest reclines from 95° to 165° so you can sit upright to focus or lean back to relax.

It’s also been designed specifically to fit the natural curves of your body, with rounded cushions, a wider seat pad, and leg rest for added comfort.

Best TV for gaming to avoid burn-in

This Hisense TV also has a great refresh rate and resolution, and some gamers say they opted for this over the LG option to prevent burn-in as it comes with VRR support.

Instead of a regular LED display, this uses MiniLED, which means the colours are more vibrant and contrasted.

It’ll also work better than the LG for console gaming.

+ Better suited for PCs and console gaming than the LG
+ Resistant to burn-in
+ MiniLED means better display
– Quite big.

Best TV for no lag gaming

For a TV that won’t lag during gaming, LG C series works for solo and multi-players.

With a fast 0.1ms response time, you won’t experience lag, while the refresh rate will keep things running smoothly.

It can sync with NVIDIA G-Sync or AMD FreeSync Premium cards, and can even be connected with multiple PCs at once thanks to its four HDMI ports that are each loaded with 2.1 bandwidth up to 48Gbps.

+ Great for gaming with PCs
+ Contrast and brightness is high quality
– Not so good for console gaming.

Best CPU for gaming

Designed specifically for speed, this CPU is consistently rated the best for gamers.

With 96MB of L3 cache, it makes for a smoother gaming experience. It’s faster, too, proving it has up to 27% better gaming performance compared with others on the market in testing.

+ Designed specifically for gaming
+ Ideal for gaming at higher display
– Not for general work.

Best gaming keyboard for beginners

If you’re new to gaming, this keyboard has everything you need for an easy and affordable set up.

Not only is the LED display customisable, but you can swap out your switches to whatever configuration you want.

There’s a dial on the keyboard, which means you can adjust the brightness and volume instantly. Plus, the keys make a satisfying “thocky” sound for a little ASMR while you play.

Best wireless keyboard for gaming

Want to avoid (even more) tangled wires? This keyboard is wireless, but without taking away from performance.

It won’t lag, as it’s designed specifically for gaming, and it has fast mechanical switches.

Similar to the Logitech keyboard, you can switch out the keys, which by the way are covered in three layers of sound dampening materials for quiet tapping that won’t distract you.

Oil rigs moored in Cromarty Firth, Scotland (Alamy)

This summer we reached an inflection point. From now on, people living in the UK will only become more familiar with the real-world consequences of a warming planet.

Deadly heatwaves, droughts, and the threat of food shortages are just the start. We need a government that will be upfront with the public, and a prime minister who will confidently defend decisions that protect our national security and long-term prosperity.

Why then is Andy Burnham doing the opposite when it comes to drilling in the North Sea? Parroting fossil-fuel talking points to make the case for an approach that risks homes, livelihoods, and lives? The latest argument from Labour politicians over the airwaves is that the government should approve more drilling to help us reach net zero faster. Primarily, they claim, because of the potential for tax receipts and the employment opportunities.

Apart from pointing out the obvious – that deliberately releasing over 200m tonnes of planet-warming gases into the atmosphere could never reduce our output of planet-warming gases – even their technical arguments simply do not stand up to scrutiny.

For starters, Adura, a joint venture between Shell and Equinor, would operate both Rosebank and Jackdaw. Its corporate structuring has been criticised for potentially allowing Shell to write off £1.3bn in UK tax. Shell has also faced criticism from campaigners who argue that it paid little or no tax in this country over several years while reporting substantial global profits.

If the government really wants to get its hands on the tax from oil and gas production to invest in the transition, it doesn’t need new fields. Instead, it needs to ensure that the existing tax instruments, like the windfall tax, actually bring in the revenue that was promised and end the near-infinite subsidies that multinational oil and gas companies have received at UK taxpayers’ expense.

When it comes to job opportunities, it is doubtless true that oil and gas workers will be important in the energy transition. But as they themselves have outlined, what they actually need is proper support to help them make the move away from an industry in terminal decline, into high-skilled, high-paid jobs in the industries of the future. Jobs that will exist for decades to come. By approving this drilling, the government would be siding with oil and gas executives, not workers, giving false promises of job security, instead of investing the real cash that could make that a reality.

These arguments can be added to the long list of specious industry talking points that are repeated by the kinds of politicians who listen more to lobbyists than to their constituents. Talking points include saying that Rosebank and Jackdaw are good for lowering energy bills (they will not reduce prices) and that more North Sea drilling is crucial for UK energy security. In fact, the best estimates show that Jackdaw would reduce our dependence on foreign gas by a piddling two per cent, and Rosebank by one per cent.

What saying yes to more drilling would certainly do is cause irrevocable damage to the public’s already battered trust in leaders to do what is best for them and their children. It would let down millions of voters in Labour constituencies and beyond who want to see more action. And it would cement this government’s reputation for refusing to acknowledge the impacts its decisions have beyond our own borders.

If Burnham is serious about prioritising the most vulnerable in society, protecting our national security and future generations, his first big decision on climate must be to cement trust and demonstrate leadership. That means saying no to Rosebank and Jackdaw. He was right to listen to Zack Polanski and call an emergency COBRA meeting this summer while wildfires ravaged homes and wildlife, and our emergency services were at breaking point. But he was wrong to think that that was all people want when they demand ‘action’ on climate.

Strong leadership on climate would mean having the confidence to make the arguments. Yes, this transition will cost money, but these upfront costs come from taking a positive step to safeguard our planet and are nothing compared to what we are already paying, and will continue to have to pay as a result of inaction. The June heatwave this summer alone is estimated to have cost the UK economy more than £1bn in lost productivity.

Every day that real action is delayed, we risk reaching an invisible but calamitous planetary tipping point from which we will never recover. The domino effects of that tipping point will hurt the already-disadvantaged the most – those already in poverty, insecure housing or without community support.

It is rare in politics to have a clear problem, existing and scalable solutions, and the political will to act on them. What we need now is a prime minister with the courage to lead.

Four Common Everyday Habits That Could Be Damaging Your Heart

Millions of people could be unknowingly putting extra strain on their hearts through everyday habits they rarely think twice about.

Dr Francesco Lo Monaco, a cardiologist and author of Heart Saviour, has shared how certain silent risk factors can gradually weaken the heart over many years before symptoms appear.

“Many people assume they would know if something was wrong with their heart, but that’s often not the case,” he said.

Here are some of the most common, yet modifiable, habits he suggested could be contributing to poor heart health – and what you can do about each.

Everyday habits that could weaken your heart

1. Poorly controlled blood pressure

If your blood pressure remains high for months or even years, your heart will need to pump against greater resistance, the health expert explained.

“Initially the heart muscle adapts by becoming thicker, but over time these changes can affect how efficiently the heart works,” he said.

“If left untreated, this can contribute to enlargement and weakening of the heart and eventually increase the risk of heart failure, abnormal heart rhythms and other cardiovascular complications.”

This is one of the reasons high blood pressure is often described as a “silent killer”, he added, because many people have no symptoms until the damage has already begun.

GPs and some pharmacies can check blood pressure. Boots offers a free health MOT for over-40s which includes a blood pressure check. Alternatively you can buy your own blood pressure monitor and check it at home.

Blood pressure can be controlled through a series of lifestyle interventions like eating a balanced diet, regular exercise and, if you’re overweight, weight loss.

Avoiding salty food, alcohol, caffeine and smoking are also important. Some people might also benefit from taking medicine to treat the issue.

2. Untreated sleep apnoea

Sleep apnoea is a condition that causes repeated pauses in breathing when you’re sleeping. It’s yet another health issue that can slip under the radar.

Dr Lo Monaco warned that repeated drops in oxygen overnight increase stress on the cardiovascular system.

“Sleep apnoea doesn’t just cause tiredness,” he said. “It is strongly associated with high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms and structural changes within the heart.”

The most common symptoms include: loud snoring, noisy and laboured breathing, periods where breathing is interrupted by gasping or snoring. As a result, it’s usually first spotted by a partner, friend or family member.

People with sleep apnoea might also find they wake up with headaches, still feel tired and find it hard to concentrate.

It’s typically treated with lifestyle interventions like weight loss, stopping smoking and reducing alcohol intake, but the NHS notes many people also need a CPAP machine to help supply oxygen over night.

3. Drinking too much alcohol

Heavy drinking over long periods of time can weaken the heart muscle. “Alcohol-related heart disease often develops gradually, so people may not notice any symptoms until significant damage has occurred,” said Dr Lo Monaco.

The NHS advises cutting back a little each day, and letting others know you’re doing this so they can offer support. Swap strong beers or wines for ones with a lower strength (ABV in %) and aim to have several drink-free days each week.

4. Physical inactivity

Regular movement helps maintain cardiovascular health. Studies have consistently found physical activity has a protective effect against heart disease, which can lead to heart attacks.

“A sedentary lifestyle doesn’t directly enlarge or weaken the heart on its own, but it contributes to several of the major risk factors that do, including obesity and high blood pressure,” said Dr Lo Monaco.

Cardiac rehab physiotherapist Helen Alexander previously told the British Heart Foundation (BHF) that three types of exercise can help strengthen heart health. These are: aerobic exercise, such as brisk walking, cycling and swimming; resistance and strength training, such as lifting weights; and exercise that improves balance and flexibility, such as tai chi and yoga.

Dr Lo Monaco concluded that if you experience breathlessness, swollen ankles, chest pain, palpitations or unexplained fatigue, you should seek medical assessment.

“The encouraging news is that many of these risk factors are modifiable,” he said. “Keeping your blood pressure under control, treating sleep apnoea, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly and limiting alcohol can all reduce the strain placed on the heart over time.”
