Genetically Modified Pig Kidney Keeps Man Alive For Record Nine Months

A genetically modified pig kidney kept a 66-year-old man off dialysis for a record nine months, marking the longest survival yet for a pig kidney transplanted into a living person and the first time such an organ successfully served as a bridge to a later human transplant. The Guardian reports: Tim Andrews was seriously ill with end-stage kidney disease caused by type 2 diabetes and had only a 9% chance of receiving a human kidney within five years, against a more than 40% risk of dying or being removed from the waiting list. Kidney transplantation provides the best survival and quality of life for patients with end-stage kidney disease, but global demand for human organs far exceeds supply.

Surgeons in the US successfully transplanted a kidney from Wilma, a Yucatan miniature pig, into Andrews, after genetically engineering it to be compatible with his immune system. The kidney kept Andrews free of dialysis for a record nine months, the longest period ever recorded, before it began failing and he received one from a dead human donor. It was also the first time a pig’s kidney had been used as a temporary “bridge” to a human transplant. The breakthrough has been detailed in the journal Lancet.

The World Now Has More Seniors Than Young People – for the First Time In History

“There are now more seniors in the world than young children,” reports the International Business Times, citing a new report from the U.S. Census Bureau report. And it warns that “The share of the population aged 65 and over is projected to nearly double, from 10.5 percent (about 1 in 10 people) in 2025 to 19.6 percent (about 1 in 5 people) by 2060.”

The world is expected to add another 2 billion people from 2025 to 2060, increasing global population from around 8 billion to around 10 billion… “Over one-half of that growth (1.148 billion) is projected to come from an increase in the population aged 65 and over,” the report states. “By contrast, the population at younger ages (age 0-19) is projected to stay relatively constant due to persistent low fertility. As the size of the older population grows rapidly and the youthful age population remains roughly the same, the percentage of the population aged 65 and over is projected to increase.”

The report notes that the birthrate in 71 percent of countries is now below the replacement level of 2.1. China, in particular, has seen its birthrate plummet. In 2023, birth rates per woman in China hit 1.06…
Aside from lower birth rates, the fact that people are living longer is one of the primary driving factors. The report notes that people are also living a healthier, more active life for a longer time.

OpenAI Agents Hacked Another Website

After reporting last week that the surveillance company Flock Safety is building an AI search tool for law enforcement, WIRED reconstructed Flock’s latest search tool from code that the company sends to a police officer’s browser and uncovered key details about how the tool works.

OpenAI said this week that its Astra model, which will have a private release soon, is its first model with cybersecurity-related capabilities that the company defines as posing a “critical” risk in public release. Meanwhile, the AI chatbot platforms Claude, ChatGPT, and Grok all suffered outages on Thursday at nearly the exact same time. But while xAI said the Grok outage resulted from issues at a Memphis data center, the causes of OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s outages are unclear.

The US has been using a high-energy laser to shoot down drones near the Mexico border as part of an initiative to adopt new-generation directed-energy weapons capable of detecting, tracking, and destroying drones with a concentrated beam of light. And as part of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement inquiry into the identities of protesters who entered a Minnesota church in March, Homeland Security Investigations agents have subpoenaed the outdoor retailer REI for information about every customer who bought a specific green beanie over the past two years.

OpenAI agents on an unauthorized tear hijacked a German website beginning in May to use it as a message board for communicating and collaborating with other agents, according to new research. The incident is reminiscent of the now infamous Hugging Face debacle in which OpenAI agents in a test environment went rogue and developed a vibrant message board for collaborating on attempting to escape their containment, before ultimately breaching the open source AI platform Hugging Face in July. The revelation of the May episode is particularly significant because OpenAI reportedly learned about it weeks ago but did not disclose it. Meanwhile, last week, the company finally released a long-promised postmortem of the Hugging Face incident that raised as many questions as it answered.

This week, a new dark-web service called Nexus started selling around 153 million driver’s licenses from the US and Canada, along with 10 million ID cards and millions more travel documents and international IDs, according to Brian Krebs, a longtime independent security reporter. Krebs was first alerted to the service after cybercriminals posted an example of the files and included his license. The tens of millions of records—which reportedly increased by 400,000 over 24 hours—appear to have come from an ID verification service, with the criminals behind the trove saying they have access to a “major” verification company. While it’s unclear which company exactly that may be, according to Kreb’s report, the Nexus service was taken offline shortly after he reported that FBI officials were investigating.

The US military has begun disabling the advertising identifiers that apps and advertising companies use to track phones and computers in an attempt to make it harder for foreign adversaries to use commercially available location data to track American forces overseas, Reuters reported Friday.

The changes follow years of disclosures that US forces deployed abroad have been targeted using commercially available location data. In 2024, a joint WIRED investigation with Germany’s Bayerischer Rundfunk and Netzpolitik.org obtained an advertising dataset that identified thousands of devices appearing at US military and intelligence sites, including an air base where US nuclear weapons are believed to be stored. At the time, Defense Department spokesperson Javan Rasnake told WIRED that the Pentagon was aware geolocation services could put personnel at risk and said service members in Europe were reminded to follow operational-security practices.

Now, the Air Force, Army, Navy, and US Special Operations Command say they have disabled advertising IDs on at least some military devices, with several of the changes taking effect only this year. It is still unclear exactly how these protections are being enforced. US senator Ron Wyden and Representative Pat Harrigan are now asking the Pentagon to investigate whether its safeguards are adequate.

Check Android Phone Band Compatibility (Before You Buy)

A phone can look perfect on paper and still fail on your network. It might never reach 5G speeds, drop calls in your own neighborhood, or lose Wi-Fi Calling entirely. The cause is almost always the same: the phone’s radio bands do not match the ones your carrier actually uses where you live.

This guide shows you how to check that match before you buy a phone or switch carriers, using free official tools and a five-minute process. No technical background is needed.

What “Band Compatibility” Actually Means

A radio band is a specific slice of wireless frequency, identified by a number like Band 4 or Band 71. Carriers broadcast on a set list of these bands in your area. Your phone can only connect to a network if its hardware physically supports the bands that carrier is using.

This is a different question from whether a phone is “unlocked.” An unlocked phone has no software lock tying it to one carrier, so you are free to insert any SIM card. But carrier lock is a separate issue from band support. A fully unlocked phone can still be a poor fit for a carrier if its radio hardware was built for a different region.

There is a third layer too: some carriers, especially Verizon in the US, also require devices to pass network certification before they get full service, even when the bands line up. We cover that separately below.

What You’ll Need Before You Start

  • Your phone’s exact model name (for example, “Pixel 8a” or “Galaxy S24,” not just “Samsung phone”)
  • Your phone’s IMEI number, found by dialing *#06# or in Settings under About Phone
  • The name of the carrier you want to use

Method 1: Use Your Carrier’s Official Checker

This is the most reliable method, because it checks your specific device against that carrier’s live network data instead of a general spec sheet.

  1. Open T-Mobile’s BYOD checker in a browser.
  2. Enter your phone’s IMEI number.
  3. Read the result: Compatible, Partially Compatible, Incompatible, Locked, or Blocked.
  4. If the result says “Partially Compatible,” your phone will work but may not get Extended Range LTE or full VoLTE calling. Treat this as a real limitation, not a technicality.

Verizon

  1. Open Verizon’s compatibility check tool.
  2. Enter your Device ID (IMEI, MEID, or ESN, depending on your phone).
  3. Confirm the phone is unlocked. Verizon requires both hardware compatibility and an unlocked status before it will approve a device.

AT&T does not offer as complete a self-serve IMEI checker as T-Mobile or Verizon. For AT&T, cross-check with Method 2 below, then confirm with an AT&T store or support chat before you buy.

Method 2: Look Up the Manufacturer’s Official Band List

If you are checking a phone before you own it, the carrier tools above will not help, since you have no IMEI yet. Instead, look up the model’s published band list directly.

  2. Open the “Network” section on the phone’s page.
  3. Find the 4G LTE and 5G band lists. Pay close attention to the region or model-variant notes; the same phone name sold in different countries often ships with different radio hardware.
  4. Compare that list against your carrier’s published band list (most carriers post this on a coverage or network page).

This method takes a little longer than a carrier’s own checker, but it works for any phone, anywhere, before you spend any money.

Method 3: Cross-Check With a Dedicated Band Database

Two community-run tools focus specifically on band data and are worth a second look, especially for phones with confusing regional variants.

  1. Kimovil’s frequency checker lets you pick a phone model and a country, then shows which of that country’s carrier bands your phone supports and which it is missing.
  2. cacombos.com’s band database lists not just individual bands but which combinations of bands a phone can use at once, which affects real-world speed more than raw band count.

Both tools are free. Neither replaces an official carrier check, since band support alone does not guarantee a carrier will activate the device on its network.

Method 4: Check What Your Phone Is Actually Using Right Now

The methods above tell you what a phone is capable of. This one tells you what it is doing right now, on the network you already have.

  1. On most Android phones, go to Settings, then About Phone, then SIM Status or Network to see basic connection details.
  2. For a more detailed reading, install a dedicated app. Android Police’s band-checking guide recommends LTE Discovery or Network Cell Info Lite for this.
  3. Open the app and grant location and phone-state permissions when asked; the app needs these to read live tower and band data.
  4. Look for a band number and a signal strength reading. A signal at or above -90 dBm is generally usable; closer to -50 dBm is excellent.

This method only works after you already own the phone and have a SIM inserted. Use it to confirm a purchase decision, not to make one in advance.

One More Wrinkle: eSIM-Only Phones

Some newer phones ship without a physical SIM slot at all. This changes how you activate service, but it does not change any of the band-checking steps above. An eSIM is just a different way of loading your carrier’s profile onto the phone; the radio hardware underneath still needs to match your carrier’s bands the same way a physical-SIM phone does. Don’t Stop at Bands: Two More Checks Before You Buy or Switch

Band compatibility is necessary, but it is not the whole picture. Skipping either of the following checks is where most costly mistakes happen.

IMEI blacklist status. A phone can support every band you need and still be useless if it was reported lost, stolen, or unpaid on a financing plan. Carriers share this status through GSMA’s IMEI database. This matters most for used or third-party marketplace purchases.

Carrier certification. Even a device with the right bands and a clean IMEI can be refused full service if the carrier has not certified that exact model for its network, something Verizon in particular enforces. This is separate from both the band check and the blacklist check, and none of the tools above test for it directly. The carrier’s own BYOD checker is the only reliable way to confirm it, which is one more reason to run Method 1 even after you have already used Methods 2 and 3.

What Happens If You Get It Wrong

A band mismatch rarely means “no service at all.” More often, it shows up as partial problems: no 5G even in a strong coverage area, no HD Voice or Wi-Fi Calling, or a signal that vanishes as soon as you leave a city center. These issues are easy to blame on the carrier when the real cause is the phone’s hardware. The financial risk is real too: used-phone sellers often will not accept a return once a SIM has been activated, and some carriers charge a restocking fee on a device that turns out to be a poor match.

Quick Troubleshooting: Right Bands, Still No Signal?

If your phone passed every check above but still will not connect properly, the problem is usually a setting rather than the hardware.

  • Confirm the SIM card is seated correctly and is the right size for the tray.
  • Check Settings for a network mode option, and make sure it is not locked to an older standard like 3G-only.
  • Reset network settings, or update the carrier APN manually if your carrier provides specific values.
  • If none of that works and you are preparing to sell, return, or switch the device entirely, a full factory reset guide can rule out a software conflict as the cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does “unlocked” guarantee a phone works on every carrier?

No. Unlocked only means the phone is not tied to one carrier’s SIM. It says nothing about which radio bands the phone’s hardware actually supports. This gap is especially common with phones bought overseas, since the same model name sold in different countries often ships with a different set of bands built in.

Why might two phones with identical band lists still perform differently on the same network?

Band support alone does not determine speed. Carriers combine multiple bands at once through a technique called carrier aggregation, and phones vary in which band combinations their modem can actually use together. Two phones can list the same individual bands and still see different real-world speeds because one supports more aggregation combinations than the other.

How often do carriers change which bands they use?

More often than most people expect. US carriers shut down their 3G networks by 2022 and reused, or “refarmed,” that spectrum for 4G and 5G. A band list that was accurate a few years ago can be outdated today, which is why checking directly with the carrier’s own tool matters more than relying on an old spec sheet.

Is a phone with more supported bands always the better choice?

Not automatically. What matters is whether the phone supports the specific bands your carrier uses in your area, not the total number of bands listed. A phone with fewer bands that happen to match your carrier exactly will outperform one with a longer list that misses a key band.

My phone shows the right bands, but I’m still not getting 5G. What’s wrong?

This is usually a certification or activation issue rather than a band problem. A phone can support the correct 5G bands on paper and still be limited to 4G if the carrier has not certified that exact model, if a network mode setting is capping the connection, or if 5G has not been fully deployed yet in your specific location. Run the carrier’s official checker again and confirm your network mode setting before assuming the phone itself is at fault.

Cancer Deaths Attributable to Alcohol Rose 58% Over the Last 33 Years

CNN reports that alcohol “may play a greater role in death from numerous types of cancers in the United States than previously known, according to a new study.”

“While it’s true that overall cancer mortality has declined, we found the percentage of cancer deaths proportionally attributable to alcohol rose over 58% in people 20 and older over the last 33 years,” said the study’s first author Dr. Chinmay Jani… It didn’t take much alcohol to raise one’s risk — about one standard drink a day, every day, Jani said. In the US, a standard drink is 12 ounces of regular beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor…

Alcohol is ethanol or ethyl alcohol, which is broken down by the liver into acetaldehyde, a
“probable human carcinogen,” the National Cancer Institute states on its website. While the liver will further break down acetaldehyde into a harmless molecule called acetate, the process isn’t foolproof: acetaldehyde may damage DNA and interfere with DNA repair before conversion into acetate is complete. Alcohol also contributes to oxidative stress, which damages DNA, proteins and cell function and creates inflammation. Drinking alcohol also weakens the cells in the mouth and throat, making them more susceptible to carcinogens. That’s even more likely to occur with smoking cigarettes, a major source of acetaldehyde. In addition, alcohol interferes with the break down and absorption of key nutrients thought to decrease cancer risk — vitamins A, C, D and E as well as folates in the vitamin B complex, according to the National Cancer Institute.

The study, which was published Monday in The Lancet Regional Health — Americas journal, analyzed more than three decades of US data gathered for the Global Burden of Disease Study. The GBD study is a massive scientific effort to measure health, mortality and disabilities from hundreds of risk factors, diseases and conditions in more than 200 countries and territories. Between 1990 and 2023, the total number of yearly alcohol-linked cancer deaths more than doubled, rising from 11,361 to 23,126 in the US.
Men and adults age 55 and older experienced the greatest impact; alcohol-related cancer mortality rate in older males climbed nearly 24% over the 33-year period. For men, liver cancer deaths showed the strongest link to alcohol, followed by esophageal and colorectal cancers. For women 55 and older, breast cancer was the top killer, followed by liver and colorectal cancers.

While there are now a lot of open-ear or clip-on earbuds on the market, many can seem quite expensive for the obvious compromises they offer. It’s rare to find somebody (unless you constantly need spatial awareness) who could buy a pair of these and have it be their only set of buds.

Even if you need to know what’s going on around you some of the time, you’ll probably want a sealed pair with noise-cancelling for commutes and plane journeys, so the open pair is probably your secondary set.

That’s where the budget end of the market comes in. Can’t justify spending £199 on the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, or the high £179 cost of the Shokz OpenDots 2? That’s okay when there are options like the EarFun Clip 2 for £70 or the Soundcore AeroClip going for £79 (at the time of writing). It’s a lot easier to afford something that’s about half the cost of the leading models, especially if it delivers many of the same essential features.

Nothing’s CMF sub-brand is known for undercutting rivals and overdelivering on features, and it’s back doing it again with the CMF Clip Pro. I quite like the Nothing Ear (Open), and the brand has evidently learned from those hook-style buds when making its much-smaller clip-ons.

These work with Nothing’s companion app, have a tiny, lightweight build, and promise 10 hours of playtime on a charge. To find out if they’re a worthy pair of open headphones, I’ve been putting them to the test.

CMF has done a great job with the design of these tiny buds. They have a bit of a glossy plastic look, but a matte finish on the stretchy clip part over the titanium wire, plus a raised and textured surface over the buttons. They only weigh 5.9g per bud, and they’re incredibly comfortable to wear with a no-fuss fit and lightweight grip. The best cuff earbuds have a barely there feeling, and these don’t disappoint in that area.

There’s a chance they may slip slightly in vigorous exercise, but I haven’t noticed them dislodge at all during weeks of testing. They’re IP54-rated, and also available in a few colours: Dark Grey, Light Grey, and Coral. I’ve been testing out the darkest shade, which looks pretty subdued. The charging case is also compact and pocketable, and it has a feature carried over from the CMF Buds Pro 2: the smart dial.

In the control settings within the Nothing X companion app, you can adjust what the smart dial does when you press it, press and hold it, or rotate it. Rotating it is just for volume control, and that’s what I’ve found most useful, especially as a double press-and-hold locks the smart dial, handy if you think you may accidentally adjust volume while it’s in your pocket.

Having volume control readily available from the case has turned out to be really useful for me, but if it’s not for you, it’s easy enough to enable and disable the dial from the app. The other on-bud controls are those easily identifiable buttons on the rear part of the clip. They’re reliable and satisfyingly clicky in use, and they’re customisable too.

It might be nice if the plastic used on the buds felt a tiny bit more premium, but that’s nitpicking at this price. When it comes to general everyday usability, the controls, comfort and portability are all excellent for this category.

Aside from the smart dial, there are many other special features to the CMF Clip Pro that you access via the Nothing X app.

I tried the fixed spatial audio with multiple tracks, including the likes of That’s So True by Gracie Abrams and Noah Kahan’s She Calls Me Back – in all cases, the spatial setting made songs feel hollow and lacking weight, so I’d leave it off.

There’s also an anti-leakage mode to reduce the amount of audio those around you hear. Unless you really need it, don’t bother. It makes your audio not only quieter but very muffled. It may be worth the sacrifice for your privacy, perhaps on calls, but it’s not a feature for good sound.

Bass enhancement is on by default, and designed to tackle the inherent bass limitations of open designs. There’s quite a bit more distortion with the default (level 2) of bass enhancement, but I don’t mind it at level 1, or off entirely. I think how much you like this will come down to how sensitive your ears are, and what genres of music you prefer.

There’s an equaliser, some presets for tweaking the sound, and dual-device multi-point connection, which works well. And there’s also a Long Battery Life toggle. This keeps you on the AAC codec (rather than high-res LDAC) and turns off battery-draining extras like the EQ, bass enhancement or spatial audio. Honestly, a lot of us should consider turning this on. It’s hard to hear the difference between AAC and LDAC in an open design.

When it comes to battery, you’re meant to be able to get 10 hours of playtime on a single charge, with an extra 22.5 hours of recharges in the case, adding up to a total of 32.5 hours. Nothing says this extends to 36 hours on the long battery life mode.

I ran a three-hour test playing a Deezer playlist over AAC at 50% volume from a Pixel 10 Pro. The battery dropped by just 20%, suggesting around 15 hours of total playtime, much better than CMF’s 10-hour estimate. Just keep in mind that using the high-res LDAC codec or a higher volume will bring you closer to 10 hours of use.

Sound Quality

I aimed to do the majority of my listening with these while using the default mode, which is the Pop equaliser preset and level 2 bass enhancement. If you were to use these right out of the box and never set up the Nothing X app, this is how they’d sound.

That amount of bass enhancement brings out some of the low end that you’re going to lose due to the open design, but it doesn’t sound that natural, with a slight lack of detail to the thump of a bassline. It’s something I noticed a fair bit while listening to Please Please Please by Sabrina Carpenter.

Switching bass enhancement to level 1, or off entirely, helps a lot to add texture and clarity. In the default setting, Massive Attack’s Teardrop, a bass stress test, just sounds mushy and distorted.

Highs are also pretty boosted, so you may find these ultimately end up too bright for a long listen. There’s too much harshness in Justin Timberlake’s Cry Me a River, even at a moderate volume, and that’s what might make these a touch fatiguing. These also aren’t that spacious, compared to rivals.

Of course, recommendations depend on what types of music you prefer, but some tweaks take these from sounding “fine for the price” to “good enough” for most of us. One of those would be to reduce the bass enhancement, and the other would be to take down the treble two or three notches in the basic three-band EQ.

You can’t make these sound as good as the warmer (and much more detailed) Sennheiser Accentum Clip, but they’re really not a total disaster, given the price.

You want an affordable pair of clip-on earbuds

These are a great fit for most people considering clip-on earbuds but not looking to spend loads. They deliver on all the basics, including design, comfort, control and battery life, and while they may not sound as premium as some rivals, they’re also not that far off.

You want the best open-ear sound

There are quite a few options available in the open category these days, in both the hook and cuff form factor. If you’re happy with ear hooks, improved sound is available in the Soundcore AeroFit 2 or Nothing Ear (Open) for good sound at under £100. Or, increase your spend and clip-on rivals from Sennheiser, Shokz and Bose sound clearly better.

Final Thoughts

As I argued right at the start of this review, it’s highly unlikely a pair of open buds will be anyone’s sole set of earphones, unless you only ever need awareness. So if you’ve already invested in a good pair with ANC, you may not want to overspend on a secondary one with a niche purpose. For those sticking to a tight budget, the CMF Clip Pro are ideal.
 
They’re a success in several key areas: design, comfort, control, battery life and extra features. And, given that sound is solid overall and customisable, they’re not a huge disappointment in that department either. I like that they’re easy to wear for hours at a time, that they have reliable buttons to control all functions, and that there’s a fun little smart dial on the charging case.
 
Other rivals that I’ve tried, like the Sennheiser Accentum Clip and Bose Ultra Open Earbuds, definitely sound better. And certain competitors, such as models from Shokz, feel a little more premium with softer silicone materials.

But overall, the CMF Clip Pro are a better buy if great value is high on your priority list. They’re easy to recommend because they’ve got a handy set of features you’ll actually use, and good enough sound and comfort to get you through long days.

I Went Shopping for My Ultimate Smart Home of the Future at IFA 2026

The IFA 2026 tech conference in Berlin is packed to the gills with gadgets of all kinds, from new foldable phones, innovative alarm clocks and even flying car concepts. But it’s home tech that really dominates the show with brands from all over the world gathering to tell you how you can add smart gadgets to your home in every conceivable way. 

Always keen to make my life easier, more colorful and more expensive, I took to the halls of the show to browse for the items I would be most interested in putting in my own home — if I suddenly won the lottery, that is.

LG OLED EVO AI 83W6

I started with the most important part: the TV. I opted for LG’s new OLED model because it’s massive, its colors looked glorious and it’s exceptionally thin, meaning it won’t look weirdly out of place when I bolt it to my wall.

Govee Smart Lights

My couch currently doesn’t have underlighting like a car from the Fast and the Furious films, but Govee’s smart lights could change all that. I saw (and, indeed, sat upon) a couch with multicolored strips along the underside, giving a glow that could make your living room look like a games arcade. Delightful.

iGulu F1 Smart Home Brewer

I like beer, and I like even more not having to leave my home in order to acquire it, so this smart home brewery setup would be a high priority for me. Simply pour in the ingredients for whatever type of beer you want. (Classic English Bitter? Yes please.) And the brewery setup will do the rest. 

I had a taster cup (OK, fine, I had several), and they were delicious.

Xiaomi Mijia Refrigerator Pro Cryo

If I’d made some beer, then I’d of course need to keep it nice and cold, and Xiaomi’s new refrigerator is the one I’d want. It uses various forms of compression and airflow to keep the contents cooler and, therefore, keeps them fresher for longer. That’s great as it means you’ll have longer to use that big of leftover cucumber before it turns into a gloopy mess in the bottom drawer, which will help fight food waste in the home. Nice.

Xiaomi Smart Bedroom 

Xiaomi actually had a lot of stuff on show as it basically makes every kind of tech product you can think of. But it was the way everything came together as an ecosystem that impressed me at the show. In the smart bedroom demo, I sat down on the bed with a book. AI-enabled cameras recognized this and immediately switched on the bedside lamp, adjusted the bed for a comfortable reading position, turned on the AC and drew the curtains closed. 

The idea is to have all parts of the home automated like this: Loaded the dishwasher? The robot vacuum will come out to clean up the floor after you’ve been cooking. Open the door of Xiaomi’s car in your driveway? It’ll recognize that you’re leaving and switch off the lights in the home and lock the door. 

It’s a wild system, and I can definitely see the appeal. But it also relies on having AI-enabled cameras watching you everywhere in your home. Do I really want that? Absolutely not. But thanks anyway.

Roborock Rockaqua P1 

In this ideal world, I’d have a salary significant enough for me to afford a home with space enough to build my own pool. And then I’d need a way of keeping it clean without, y’know, having to actually do anything myself. That’s where Roborock’s pool-cleaning robot comes in. 

Think of it as a Roomba that can go underwater. It’ll clean dirt and grime from the pool floor and can even climb the walls to keep everything nice and fresh.

Classic fairground bumper cars aren’t exactly smart home technology, but they were something I could enjoy at the show, and enjoy I did. But when I thought about it more, I realized they may also be the ultimate urban vehicle: powered only by electricity, runs on overhead power lines so you never need to charge them and are safe enough that you can ram them into another road user and you don’t need to exchange insurance details afterward.

Mova Astra X

Mova’s lawn-mowing robot has a big robotic arm attached to it that is designed to pick up garden debris as the mower automatically circles the grounds of your home to keep things neat. But Mova had a better use for it at the show: a synchronized fan dance set to an electro-metal soundtrack from a live DJ. Count me in.

Neakasa M9 Litter Box

I love my beautiful fluffy ball of absolute wonderful joy (my cat, Toulouse) more than anything else in the world. But even so, having to go and clear out his daily dumps from the litter box is time that could be spent cuddling him or taking more photos of his paws. 

Neakasa’s litter box uses a rotating scoop system that filters out each bit of new nastiness and deposits the mess in a chute for easy removal later. Thanks, technology.

Birdfy Feeder Metal 2

While “Feeder Metal 2” might sound more like a side-scrolling, beat-em-up game for the Atari games console in the ’80s, Birdfy’s home gadget is much more adorable. Equipped with wide angle cameras, this bird feeder will alert you each time a bird comes for a snack and uses AI to recognize what species you’re seeing. 

I love birds. I know I’d thoroughly enjoy just watching the live feed from the cameras and seeing the various garden birds we have in Britain coming to rudely eat the seed I bought them without leaving a thank-you.

EcoFlow Stream 5000

No smart home setup is complete without a power backup solution, and EcoFlow’s is my personal pick. The Stream 5000 power station can have multiple solar panels plugged into it, and it has a built-in inverter to feed that power directly into your home’s grid. While just one unit will keep your devices working for a short time, you can daisy-chain multiple ones to give you up to several days of home power in case of longer outages.

CERN is moving more than 2,200 specialized computers from RHEL to Debian

Looking ahead: CERN engineers have unveiled a complex plan to move a number of computers to a new Linux distribution. The upgrade is required to prevent older, specialized hardware from becoming obsolete, though it’s turning out to be a challenging endeavor.

During a recent conference held in Winterthur, Switzerland, engineers working at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) confirmed that the laboratory is going to move from Red Hat Enterprise Linux to Debian. The switch will affect more than 2,200 computers, many of which cannot be upgraded to newer RHEL releases because newer Red Hat releases will leave much older hardware behind.

As one of the world’s leading research institutions in particle physics, CERN generates massive amounts of data on a regular basis. The lab where Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web’s original vision was already packing 49 petabytes of digital files back in 2016. All this data requires a solid, ever-growing IT infrastructure, and the same goes for machines designed to manage scientific experiments through custom hardware boards.

CERN was an early adopter of the RHEL ecosystem. Over the past few years, the institute has been using the commercial system’s free variant AlmaLinux. The lab initially considered switching to CentOS Stream, which is one of the upstream sources for RHEL development. The engineers ultimately decided to abandon the entire RHEL infrastructure after the CentOS project decided to implement a disruptive change in the system’s compiler.

CentOS Stream 9, and thus RHEL 9, are built with the “-march=x86-64-v2” compiler flag. The x86-64v2 revision of the x86 ISA includes a few specific architectural changes, breaking compatibility with 64-bit CPUs released before 2009.Lack of support for pre-x86-64-v2 CPUs would force CERN to replace 47% of its embedded control computers. Even worse, since 2025, RHEL 10 has moved to x86-64-v3, which means an additional 17% of CERN’s computers would need to go to a landfill sooner rather than later.

CERN engineers explained that Debian 13 might save the institute a massive IT replacement job and related costs. The free, “universal” operating system is the second-oldest Linux distribution still in development behind Slackware, and serves as the basis for numerous popular distributions, most notably Ubuntu.

Still, replacing RHEL/AlmaLinux with Debian is proving to be a challenge of its own. CERN uses many custom hardware solutions, which require specific kernel drivers, bootloaders, and system images.

Debian does not provide a standard toolset for automating package building and publishing packages, which means the engineers are going to evaluate some additional provisioning solutions such as Debusine. Nevertheless, it’s better than throwing away thousands of perfectly functional computers and spending millions to build an entire IT infrastructure from scratch.
