Natalie Portman and her boyfriend, Tanguy Destable, have reportedly welcomed their first baby together.

People reported on Saturday, September 5, that Portman, 45, quietly gave birth in August. Further details have not been immediately shared. Us reached out to a rep for the actress for comment.

Portman’s newest addition joins her two older children with ex-husband Benjamin Millepied, to whom she was married from 2012 to 2024. The pair previously welcomed son Aleph in June 2011 and daughter Amalia in February 2017.

Portman revealed in April that she was pregnant with her and Destable’s first baby together.

“Tanguy and I are very excited,” she told Harper’s Bazaar at the time. “I’m just very grateful. I know it’s such a privilege and a miracle. I grew up hearing about how hard it is to get pregnant. I have so many people I love who’ve had such a hard time with it that I want to be respectful around that as well. It’s such a beautiful, joyous thing, and it’s also not an easy thing.”

She added, “I know how lucky it is. I’m very aware, and I’m very grateful. I have deep appreciation and gratitude.”

Portman’s pregnancy news came more than a year after Us confirmed her relationship with Destable.

“Natalie and Tanguy have been seeing each other for a few months,” a source exclusively told Us in March 2025, noting that their romance hadn’t been going on “too long, but they are having a great time together.”

According to the insider, Destable is “very outgoing and boisterous” and “really into” Portman, whom he first crossed paths with because the two share a “few mutual friends.”

“Natalie is very happy with Tanguy,” a second source told Us at the time.

The following month, Portman offered rare insight into her life as a mother of two.

“My kids are always a source of excitement because you just see them develop into the individuals they are,” she told Jenna Ortega in an Interview magazine profile published in April 2025. “And also, I’ve been spending a lot of time with my friends, with their kids and my kids; that’s pretty fun.”

Portman also addressed how she found “balance” between her work and personal life after becoming a mom.

“Having kids, that wasn’t really my motivation,” she explained. “I was just excited to have kids, and with a person that I was in love with. But it’s really important to have people in your life who keep you on the ground.”

Portman is raising her family in Paris after relocating from the United States.

The reveal took place at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas, where Usher came face-to-face with his lifelike wax figure. “It looks more like me than me,” he said while admiring the craftsmanship. “You guys got my eyes right.” He added that he was honored to share the moment with fans visiting Las Vegas and called the finished piece “impressive.”

The figure draws heavily from Usher’s My Way Las Vegas residency. He donated his Vanson skeleton biker jacket for the display, while the figure is also styled in roller skates and wears jewelry inspired by Usher’s signature look, including the Ice Box “U” pendant chain he wore to the unveiling. According to Madame Tussauds, the figure took nine months to create, with 20 studio artists contributing to the process.

“I’m blown away,” Usher said. He added that he hopes fans who didn’t get the chance to attend his Vegas residency can experience “a little glimpse of the magic” from the show through the figure.

Of all the books ever published, it’s inevitable that some are going to be sad. This shouldn’t be surprising to anyone, even those who might well admit that they don’t really read, and instead spend their time pursuing other forms of entertainment like movies, TV shows, or games. Books predate all those, and books likely influenced a bunch of those kinds of entertainment, even before taking into account how many adaptations of books there are out there.

The challenge here comes not from observing the sadness of certain books, but from selecting a bunch of those sad books and highlighting them as the saddest. It’s a subjective thing, and that subjectivity is coupled with a rather overwhelming history of literature, and the unfortunate reality that one cannot (even if they live for a century or more), cannot read everything. So, here’s an honest attempt to rank some of the saddest books of all time, acknowledging that what one finds sad, another person might not consider so bad.

‘Of Mice and Men’ (1937)

So, Of Mice and Men is one of those quintessential tearjerkers, probably being one of the first titles that comes to mind when you hear the term “sad book.” It’s a boring pick, then, when talking about sad books, but it earns its place here. It also earns that place here without being very long, since Of Mice and Men is a novella that doesn’t need the length of a novel to make you feel absolutely miserable.

The narrative here concerns two men looking for work during the Great Depression, and continually experiencing that search becoming harder and harder. Of Mice and Men is nearly 90 years old, which has made some of it dated, but if younger readers are made aware of that in advance, there’s still a pretty good chance they’ll be made to read it in high school, and it’s one of the saddest books you might come across when still fairly young, as a result.

‘A Storm of Swords’ (2000)

The first installment of a series that feels worth mentioning, A Storm of Swords is the third book in A Song of Ice and Fire, which is an epic fantasy series that’ll hopefully be finished… one day… maybe. Anyway, for now, it’s the most emotional book of the bunch. There have been five novels planned, of seven, and if you want to know why this one’s especially emotional, but haven’t read the series, it’s the book that the show, Game of Thrones, adapted for its third and fourth seasons.

Yes, A Storm of Swords was eventful enough to be the source material for two whole seasons, and so that one absolutely devastating episode in season 3… yeah, that part of the story is in A Storm of Swords. Honestly, that’s the main reason for including this book here. The other A Song of Ice and Fire books have their disturbing and downbeat moments, but that wedding of a red variety has them all beat, and makes this third book stand out as particularly depressing.

‘Wuthering Heights’ (1847)

Some people might try telling you that Wuthering Heights is a romantic novel, but sometimes, some people are wrong. There are feelings of longing and desire here, but the passionate stuff is also destructive, and Wuthering Heights is more focused on looking at the lingering effects of trauma, alongside exploring prejudice, class, inequality, and all sorts of other things that aren’t particularly romantic.

There are some adaptations of Emily Brontë’s source material that lean into romance, or have things play out as a love story of a bittersweet nature, but in the book, there is not much love, traditional or otherwise. In its place, you do get a ton of sadness in Wuthering Heights, and it’s remarkable how much of that emotional devastation still packs a punch close to two centuries on from the novel’s publication.

‘Pet Sematary’ (1983)

Because you’re reading (or skimming through) something put together by a hopeless Stephen King fanatic, Pet Sematary is not going to be the only book by the author here. Apologies if that’s a problem. But if there’s one book by King worth singling out for its sadness, it’s Pet Sematary, because it’s quite in your face as a novel about death and grief, with the main characters living next to a cemetery, and because it’s a Stephen King book, that cemetery seems able to bring pets back to life.

The family cat dies and is resurrected. Chaos ensues, especially when the question of “Does this work with human beings as well as pets?” arises. Pet Sematary itself will never be buried/forgotten about, and even if it were, people would gladly dig it up to revisit it, or at least do that so they can recommend it. It’s a remarkable and uncompromising novel, and definitely one of King’s most raw and emotionally intense.

‘Mason & Dixon’ (1997)

Mason & Dixon is fairly surprising with its emotion, because Thomas Pynchon is not a particularly sentimental author, to put it mildly. His books are generally engaged with intellectually more than emotionally, and to be fair, there is also quite a bit to think about and analyze when it comes to Mason & Dixon as well, though it’s got a bit more of an emotional kick than you might be expecting, alongside all the absurdity, confusion, and episodes that prove unusually funny.

The main characters here (Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon) existed in real life, though Mason & Dixon does stray further from history than most historical fiction, owing to the exploits of the titular characters being presented as a story within a story. And Pynchon writes the whole thing unusually, even by his standards, mirroring/parodying the style of certain literature from the 1700s. It’s an interesting book, to say the least, and the ways that it proves touching and bittersweet really do prove startling (in a good way, not to mention a hard-to-explain way).

‘The Subtle Knife’ (1997)

Within the His Dark Materials trilogy, Northern Lights might be the best book, but The Subtle Knife is probably the most emotionally impactful. Northern Lights you have to start with, either way, and then The Subtle Knife is the middle chapter of the trilogy. The Amber Spyglass wraps things up, and has some events that are probably supposed to be about as tearjerking as The Subtle Knife, but it just doesn’t quite get there.

The third book is messy, to say the least. Lots of it works, and even when it’s not working, its ambition can be admired. Worst-case scenario, it’s an instance of “two out of three ain’t bad.” As for The Subtle Knife specifically… well, highlighting the saddest scene here would be a huge spoiler, but you’ll know it when you come to it. It’s perfect, and also so emotionally brutal.

‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ (2007)

There was a point at which the Harry Potter movies were not able to match the intensity found in the books, and that point was crossed well and truly before the seventh and final book in the series (and its two-part film adaptation): Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. To focus on the books, though, they do ratchet up in intensity gradually and quite logically, with the characters dealing with more challenging things the older they get.

So, if you yourself were growing up while these books and/or movies were coming out, and you weren’t too young when they first started coming out, you could probably handle each new one. If things got a bit too sad with book #7, that’s understandable, since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows doesn’t really mess around. It’s got “Death” (or “Deathly,” technically) in the title, and you do get a lot of death here, alongside other things that really drive home a sense of finality. It’s great, but definitely bittersweet stuff, as far as closing chapters go.

‘The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower’ (2004)

The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower concluded the mainline The Dark Tower series, as the seventh and final main book, though The Wind Through the Keyhole came later (but proved to be an inessential interquel). This book is the grand finale, and without giving away what happens here, or most of what happens in the preceding six books, it is indeed focused on the final stage of Roland’s journey to that infamous Dark Tower.

If you read this book in isolation, it would be confusing and make it hard to see what all the hype was about. When you read it after the first six books, though, the final part of The Dark Tower packs so many emotional wallops in a row. It’s even more brutal on an emotional front than the finale that was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, with the sadness here (your mileage may vary on how bitter or how sweet this bittersweet book ultimately is) feeling undeniable.

‘Les Misérables’ (1862)

While it was originally written in French, rather than English, Les Misérables doesn’t really lose anything in translation by maintaining the French title for readers outside France. It’s a book about lots of unfortunate people living during a tumultuous and emotionally strained time in history, with that history being stuck to, even if the people who either experience or observe the real-life events here are actually fictional.

That’s historical fiction for you, in a nutshell. An honorable mention should probably go out to War and Peace, which does some comparable things to Les Misérables and is itself fairly moving at times, but Les Misérables is more outwardly tragic. It’s also safe to say that it paved the way for plenty of sad and/or tearjerking stories to come (for better or worse), so it scores high here, for present purposes, thanks to its historical value within the overall world of literature.

‘A Little Life’ (2015)

If you’re talking about books that have a certain notoriety for being sad, and you don’t give a mention to A Little Life, people are going to start seriously raising some eyebrows. So, here’s A Little Life. It’s a long book, and it’s distressing for that lengthy amount of time, with the narrative here focusing on a group of friends who all have some extreme personal demons they’re dealing with.

Much of that stuff’s from the past, so you get a sense of why those things were horrible and sad in that history, and then there’s a further exploration of how all those downbeat events continue to impact everyone in the present. There’s something to be said for this book’s braveness, and its willingness to tackle so many difficult things thematically, but you’d also be forgiven for sticking to admiring A Little Life from afar, rather than getting caught up in all its sadness, if it’s just not the kind of thing you need in your life right now.

The actress began dating the “Top Gun: Maverick” star after ending her 16-year marriage to Cash Warren, and the pair have since become increasingly open about their romance with plenty of PDA posts online.

Created by Liz Meriwether, the first season of Furious primarily revolved around a complicated cat-and-mouse chase between FBI agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) and serial killer Catherine Grace (Lola Petticrew). In the wake of an explosive finale, Season 2 is on the verge of embracing an even darker path for one of its central characters.

After facing trauma all season long, Alice is initially framed as someone with the strength to prevail, but there were glimmers of darkness brewing within her pursuit of Catherine and her decision to confront past wounds. After the finale concluded, it was clear that Alice had killer instincts, and knowledge of which individuals are connected to the flash drive in her possession may set her down a dark path of vengeance — that is, if she’s willing to sacrifice newfound happiness in the process.

The ‘Furious’ Finale’s Biggest Twist Involves Alice and Jay Easton

Alice Black isn’t just an agent on a mission, but also a woman with a traumatic past that affected her present. She was demeaned and minimized by the NYPD and not seen as strong enough for the FBI. Nora Washington (Quincy Tyler Bernstine) may have told Alice that she was too “soft,” but the biggest revelation of the finale is that Jay Easton (Peter McRobbie) died at Alice’s hands. After being taunted by Catherine about the euphoric feeling of taking a life and Easton’s trigger of recalling her from one of the videos on the drive, the episode reveals that the businessman’s death wasn’t coincidental, as Alice initially reported.

When Alice reunites with Catherine, the now-imprisoned woman has successfully deduced her role in Easton’s demise, and poses a telling question: “Did you like the way it felt?” If Alice truly enjoyed killing, the FBI’s list of the individuals who downloaded her video may send her down a similar path. Will she go on a quest to bring them to justice, or will she pursue a bloodier crusade? Her smile at the very end of the episode doesn’t confirm that answer one way or another.

Alice Has To Choose Between Happiness and Revenge in ‘Furious’ Season 2

Alongside this major finale twist is the fact that Alice has now officially begun a romance with her longtime friend and ally, NYPD detective Danny Kelly (Scoot McNairy). Previously, they hadn’t been able to take their relationship to the next level because of personal obstacles and Alice’s trauma as a result of the abuse she endured at the hands of her ex, Marshall Connelly (Jake Lacy). The irony is that Danny choosing to hand over the flash drive to Alice may now be the action that rips them apart.

With Danny purposefully stepping back from the darkness while Alice stays put, there is tension destined to arise from the drive’s existence, as well as the dark secret Alice now harbors about Easton’s death. As Rossum explained to Collider, “They are at very different points in their lives, so we’ll have to see what happens for them next.” Alice can live a happy life with Danny, or she can choose to pursue revenge, but the decision will be hers and hers alone when Furious returns. As Meriwether indicated to Decider, Season 2 will explore another case, but the events of Season 1 will still be a part of Alice and inform her next moves.

NeNe Leakes returned to the “Real Housewives” franchise in August 2026 after six years away. During the episode, the veteran reality TV star, who is arguably known for putting the beloved franchise on the map, spoke with a producer about coming back to the series and admitted to being a bit wary.

NeNe Leakes’ return comes several years after the 58-year-old sued Bravo, NBCUniversal, and the “Real Housewives of Atlanta” production companies, alleging racism and other forms of discrimination. Before the legal battle, Leakes had a nasty fallout with “Housewives” executive producer Andy Cohen.

In episode 4 of Bravo’s “Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip,” Leakes made her highly anticipated return and told producers she was anxious about filming with the cast.

“My stomach was kind of hurting a little bit, kind of, you know, like, nervous hurt,” she said. “I don’t know how they are, you know. I just hope they’re nice to me.”

When the producer asked what would happen if the ladies weren’t nice to her, Leakes said she’d clap back in true “Housewives” fashion.

The ‘RHUGT’ Cast Members Were Emotional Seeing NeNe Leakes

The “Ultimate Girls Trip” cast members were ecstatic after Leakes surprised them at a drag brunch in Atlanta.

“Real Housewives of New York” alum Luann de Lesseps likened Leakes’ return to seeing “your long-lost family, and you’re back together again,” while “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star Teresa Giudice said she was “so happy” to see Leakes.

“I’m so happy Nene’s here. And, I don’t know, I feel like we have, like, this sisterhood, like no competition or anything like that. We always, like, respected each other,” Giudice said.

And the love didn’t stop there. “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” OG Kyle Richards opened up about her special bond with Leakes during her confessional.

“Nene was the first Housewife of any of the franchises that I became friends with. Nene and I have had lunches, dinners, we’ve gossiped, shared private things with each other. We just always had each other’s back. I’ve missed her,” she said.

“Real Housewives of Potomac” star Gizelle Bryant, however, had a bone to pick with Leakes after learning about a comment the Georgia native made about her years before.

“I have always given Nene her flowers, but she has said some things about me,” Bryant said before cameras showed her asking Leakes why she asked one of their franchise peers to “beat me up.”

Leakes didn’t back down, though, telling Bryant that she was “talking sh-t” and that there were “no hard feelings.”

NeNe Leakes Was Happy To Be Gone

As the episode continued, Leakes spoke with the principal cast of “Ultimate Girls Trip” about how she first felt after leaving the series in her rearview.

“In the beginning I was happy to be gone, honestly, ’cause it was just a heavy time,” she said. “At first, you feel a little bit like, ‘I mean, they’re shooting without me? Like, how the h-ll does that go?’ … You feel really weird. In a weird, way, we’re like all sisters, right? I’m still very connected to these girls. But, at first, it does take some time to set in.”

Leakes Ready To ‘Move Forward’ With Bravo

While Leakes spent 11 seasons as an “RHOA” OG, she departed the series after season 12 in 2020. Years later, she sued the network and Cohen, claiming she faced discrimination on set.

“NBC, Bravo and True foster a corporate and workplace culture in which racially-insensitive and inappropriate behavior is tolerated — if not, encouraged,” the suit read. “As the Black Lives Matter movement swept our nation, Mrs. Leakes — Bravo’s historically most successful Black female talent — should have been embraced by NBC, Bravo, and True.”

Following her suit, Leakes and NBC settled out of court, but that hasn’t brought her any closer to her old pal, Cohen.

“I am the kind of person that, good or bad, time heals,” Leakes said. “You don’t have to be besties or anything like that, but I move forward. I’m not into holding negative energy.”

Roommates, a 16-year-old Welsh student has been sentenced after an incident with a teacher left her with a gash on the back of her head. Now, the teacher, Vicki Williams, is speaking out about the near-fatal encounter, recalling what happened inside her classroom.

Teacher Recalls The Frightening Moment Inside Her Classroom

A 16-year-old male student appeared at Swansea Crown Court on Thursday, September 3, as his History teacher Vicki Williams addressed the attack. The teen, who was 15 at the time, attacked Williams with a knife inside her classroom at Milford Haven Comprehensive School in Wales back in February. Williams previously told the court that the teen approached her for help with a history assignment before following her into an empty classroom. She recalled becoming suspicious after he shut the door behind him and allegedly claimed the school’s temperature was his reason for closing it.

Footage shown in court this week captures the teen calmly walking into the room before suddenly rushing out. Moments later, Williams runs out behind him while holding a large knife and rubbing the back of her head. While addressing the court, Williams recalled thinking she was going to die and fearing she would never see her daughter again. Vicki also described a look of “pure hatred” on the student’s face after the incident and that the attack came out of no where. Per New York Post, the incident left Williams with a scalp injury from the stab to her head, a 2.8-inch gash on her back and defensive wounds on her hands.

In her personal victim statement, Williams opened up about the emotional toll the attack has taken on her, sharing that she has struggled with feeling sadness, anger and guilty. She also revealed that she plans to begin therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder. “Sadness is the most predominant, I focus too much on what could have happened to me,” Williams added. “I’m in disbelief about what’s happened.”

What’s Next For The Teen?

In July, a jury found the teen not guilty of attempted murder but convicted him of wounding with intent and unlawful wounding. During Thursday’s hearing, a judge sentenced the teen to four and half years in a youth detention facility. The male teen has pushed back against Williams’ account in court, claiming the assault happened by accident and that Vicki tried to grab the knife. He also reportedly said that the only reason he brought the knife as a part of a game with friends. He added that the group competed to see who could sneak the most ridiculous items into the school.

Judge Weighs In On The Traumatic Incident

Judge Paul Thomas also weighed in on the incident during the sentencing hearing. He said he believes the teen brought the knife to school with the intention of hurting Williams and added that she was fortunate to escape the attack without fatal injuries.

“What I do know for certain is that you took a knife that day to school because you wanted to really hurt her with it.” Thomas continued, “It was pure luck that she didn’t have far worse injuries, even fatal injuries.”
