Stocks Finish Weaker Amid Fears of Rate Hikes Ahead
The 2-year yield, which often rises and falls with traders’ expectations for short-term rates set by the central bank, ended the day at 4.379%, up from around 4.34% before the data was released at 8:30 a.m. ET. The yield rose above 4.41% at its intraday peak.
The yield on the 10-year note rose to 4.783%, up from around 4.75% before the report.
The yield on the 30-year bond rose the least, edging up to 5.246%.
Investors now see a nearly 60% chance that the Fed will hike this month, up from 52% before the report’s release.

Stocks slipped on Friday, as worries mounted that the Federal Reserve will hike rates later this month.
Chip stocks were a bright spot with the PHLX Semiconductor Index rising 3.4%, but it wasn’t enough to offset broader market weakness.
The S&P 500 dropped 0.4% and the Nasdaq fell 0.3%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.5%, or 272 points.

What Happened in Markets Today
The U.S. job market is hot. A new labor-market report showed the U.S. added 162,000 jobs in August, about triple the amount economists expected. The unemployment rate remained at a healthy 4.1%, suggesting the job market is strong even if workers’ pay isn’t keeping up with inflation.
