‘No Satisfaction’: Abhay Singh’s Brutally Honest Reaction After Asian Games Silver

Published

on

There were high hopes for Abhay Singh to secure an Olympic berth with a gold-winning show in squash, but the Indian player had to settle for a silver medal after a straight-games defeat in the men’s singles final. Abhay Singh, ranked 24th in the world, was beaten 11-9, 11-5, 11-5 by defending champion Ng Eain Yow in 44 minutes. After a tightly contested opening game, the Malaysian controlled the tempo and length and repeatedly forced Abhay into difficult retrievals. The result extended India’s wait for an individual Asian Games squash gold medal. Saurav Ghosal had also finished with silver at the 2014 and 2023 editions.

After winning the silver medal, Abhay spoke to NDTV in an exclusive interview. Here are the excerpts:

Q: Well, I have with me Abhay Singh, who has just won the silver medal in men’s singles squash at the Asian Games. How would you rate this moment? A sense of achievement or satisfaction?

Abhay Singh: Yeah, disappointing, of course, to lose in a big final, but I mean, it’s taken a lot to get on that podium.

Q: At least some satisfaction?

Abhay Singh: No, not really.

I think it’s hard. Maybe when I look back on it a couple of weeks or months later, I’ll think, “Okay, that was a good week.” But tonight, it doesn’t really feel like a very good time.

Q: But you have a chance to convert this into another medal because you have the team event. How much will this propel you towards a bigger medal, maybe even changing the colour of this one?

Abhay Singh: Yeah, it’s nice to have a second opportunity. Maybe it’s about going back to the drawing board with the boys and sitting down with the coaches to see what’s happening and put things right.

Q: You started very well. It seemed that you were going toe-to-toe with your Malaysian opponent. Where do you think the match slipped away?

Abhay Singh: Yeah, I think it was an accumulation of his better squash.

I think he was certainly moving better than I was today. Maybe it could have been a bit of nerves. Maybe it was because he was putting more work into my legs.

Also, it has a lot to do with the experience he’s had in big matches against bigger and better players. But yeah, it being my first singles event and first singles medal at a major event, I think silver doesn’t sound too bad, although at this point it still hurts.

Q: You won team gold last time around and, if I remember correctly, you played the last match against a Pakistan opponent. Do you take any memories from that into these Games?

Abhay Singh: Yeah, I think you look back fondly, but an athlete who lives in the past is going to struggle.

The minute it’s done, it’s done. We have to think about this Asian Games, and once we’re done with this, we’ll probably think about the next one as well.

Like I said, it’s nice to be a gold medallist once in your life, but while the moment is here, it’s about converting these medals into gold this week.

Q: How difficult is it to keep your mind and body in sync over this four-year cycle?

Abhay Singh: Yeah, it’s very important. But fortunately, we’re backed well and have all the support we need from various channels to hire the best support staff who help with things like this.

My team has been unbelievably hands-on with me through the summer, preparing for such big Games. Getting to the final was the first goal, being the second seed.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t go one step further, but a huge thanks to the team for making this possible.

Q: Is LA on your mind? Had you won this match, you would have qualified.

Abhay Singh: Yeah, of course. It wasn’t on my mind too much.

I think there’s still a way to qualify, and I’m not panicking. It doesn’t really occur to me as something that’s going to happen in 18 months. We can think about it 18 months from now.

I just want to go back to enjoying life a bit after next week. But like I said, the mission isn’t done. There’s still a gold medal to win.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe in talks to settle £180m dispute after Man United co-owner’s falling out

Published

Manchester United minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly in settlement talks over a £180million dispute, which has now been going on for 18 months

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly in settlement talks with Sir Ben Ainslie over an £180million legal dispute regarding the AC75 racing yacht Britannia they launched in 2024.

Ineos sued Ainslie’s Athena Racing sailing team in March over their continued use of the boat. Ratcliffe announced last January that his chemicals company would no longer be backing them for next year’s 38th America’s Cup in Naples.

Ainslie had Ratcliffe’s funding for the previous two cycles in Auckland in 2021 and in Barcelona in 2024. Manchester United’s co-owner said during the latter that he was committed for a third, but backtracked months later.

Over a year after legal action began, Ainslie told The Telegraph in Naples this weekend: “A lot of water has flowed under the bridge over the last 18 months.

“We had a mutual desire to win the America’s Cup, and I’m confident we’ll be able to find a way to resolve this before it goes to court.”

As first reported by The Telegraph, the earliest available dates for hearings and trials at the Commercial Court that are expected to last longer than a week are from 15 November 2027. That would be four months after next year’s America’s Cup finishes.

Ainslie’s defence against the High Court action Ratcliffe pursued alleges that he wanted “all of [the team’s] assets and intellectual property” transferred to him in return for his continued support. The filing claims Ineos Sport chairman Rob Nevin “stated to Sir Ben: ‘This is what Jim wants.

“We have a phrase at Ineos: ‘scorched earth’. It means that if you don’t give Jim what he wants, he will burn your house down’ (or words to that effect).”

Ineos Sport chief executive Jean-Claude Blanc also allegedly confronted Ainslie alongside chairman Nevin. Their lawyers did not deny that a conversation took place.

They wrote in filed court documents: “It is admitted that Mr Nevin indicated that Sir Jim would not back down (and had only ever done so in a dispute concerning the People’s Republic of China) and in that context referred to ‘scorched earth’.

“But it is denied that these comments would reasonably have been understood by Sir Ben as a ‘threat’ of anything other than the claimant enforcing its legal rights to the fullest extent possible.

“Mr Nevin’s words were intended to be, and would reasonably have been understood to be, used in a figurative rather than a literal sense.”

Breece Hall injury update: Jets RB ruled out vs. Lions

Published

The New York Jets cut into their deficit against the Detroit Lions, but lost star running back Breece Hall for the game in the process. Hall suffered a thigh injury on a second-and-goal run in the fourth quarter, and the Jets’ medical staff ruled him out following an evaluation in the sideline medical tent.

Hall ran toward the sideline on the short-yardage play and hit the ground hard on a tackle by Lions linebacker Trevor Nowaske. Most of Hall’s weight landed on his right hip area.

The Jets trailed by 14 points at the time of the injury but closed the drive with a touchdown. They eventually tied the game at 24 to erase a two-touchdown deficit and pulled off the comeback without Hall in the lineup.

Hall handled 13 carries for 32 yards and caught three passes for an additional 23 yards before he exited the contest. He entered Week 2 as the Jets’ leader in yards from scrimmage with 131 on the ground and 79 through the air, and he was one of three players to log a rushing touchdown in the early part of the season.

Any time that Hall misses will force the Jets to operate without their most effective offensive weapon. Hall stands among the NFL’s most prolific pass-catchers at the running back position. He ranked in a tie for third on the team in receptions across the season’s first two games.

Braelon Allen leaped into a larger role upon Hall’s exit. New York’s No. 2 running back is familiar with the increased workload, as he shouldered additional weight in 2024 when Hall battled a knee injury. Allen missed the majority of the 2025 season due to a knee injury of his own, though, and is now two years removed from that promising rookie campaign in which he started two games and totaled 334 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

The New York Jets backfield took a big hit on Sunday.

Starting running back Breece Hall was ruled out for the remainder of the Jets’ game against the Detroit Lions with a thigh injury, the team announced.

Hall was tackled out of bounds by Lions linebacker Trevor Nowaske and appeared to land awkwardly before being ruled out shortly after.

The 25-year-old had 55 yards on 16 total touches before exiting. Hall has 265 scrimmage yards and one touchdown so far this season.

Braelon Allen is in line to get most of the touches out of the Jets’ backfield in Hall’s absence.

Equatorial Guinea vs Sierra Leone Prediction and Betting Tips

Published

on

Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone will be looking to bounce back from their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers opening-day defeat when they square off at Stade Omnisport Ahmadou Ahidjo on Monday. This will be the first meeting between the two sides since January 2022, when the National Thunder secured a 1-0 victory in their AFCON Group E clash.

Equatorial Guinea were denied a dream start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers as they fell to a 2-0 defeat against DR Congo courtesy of goals from Chancel Mbemba and Yoane Wissa.

Coming off their group-stage exit in 2025, Equatorial Guinea are aiming to secure a fourth consecutive AFCON appearance since back-to-back absences in the 2017 and 2019 editions.

Meanwhile, Sierra Leone were left disappointed in Thursday’s group opener as they fell to a 3-2 defeat against Zimbabwe after throwing away a two-goal lead in the final 20 minutes at the Stade Ben M’Hamed El Abdi.

After Alie Conteh and Sallieu Tarawallie put Sierra Leone in front heading into half time, a brace from Wolverhampton Wanderers man Marshall Munetsi and Tawanda Chirewa’s 76th-minute strike saw Zimbabwe snatch all three points in El Jadida, Morocco.

Head coach Didier Gomes Da Rosa will hope his side can provide an immediate reaction on Monday as Sierra Leone look to secure just their second AFCON appearance since back-to-back first-round exits in the 1994 and 1996 editions.

Equatorial Guinea vs Sierra Leone Head-To-Head and Key Numbers

  • With four wins from the last seven meetings between the sides, Sierra Leone boast a superior record in the history of this fixture.
  • Equatorial Guinea have picked up two wins in that time, while the two nations have settled for a share of the spoils once.
  • Sierra Leone have failed to win eight of their last nine AFCON qualifying games, losing six and claiming two draws since June 2023.
  • Equatorial Guinea are on a run of six straight competitive games without a win, losing five and claiming one draw since beating Sao Tome and Principe 3-2 in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers back in September 2025.

Equatorial Guinea vs Sierra Leone Prediction

Having stumbled into the campaign, Equatorial Guinea and Sierra Leone will look to steady their ship and get their qualifying journey back on track.

Equatorial Guinea are a stronger side on paper, and given their home advantage, we are backing them to secure maximum points here.
