Eddie Hearn Gives Anthony Joshua Health Update After Fatal Car Crash

Matchroom boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has issued a new statement over Anthony Joshua’s condition, after the British heavyweight was involved in a tragic car accident which killed two people.

The former champion was travelling on a major motorway in Ogun State near Lagos, Nigeria when the car he was travelling in collided with a stationary lorry. Five people were involved in the incident.

Police reports stated that Joshua was stable after sustaining minor injuries. However, the boxer’s strength and conditioning coach and personal trainer, Sina Ghami and Kevin “Latif” Ayodele, passed away at the scene.

Hearn Gives Update on Joshua in Statetment

In the immediate aftermath of the crash, Hearn was approached for comment by the Daily Mail and stated that he had not heard from Joshua, who he manages. He stated: “I am away on a family holiday and awoke to the news of this incident. We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we don’t want to speculate on how he is but thankfully he appears OK from what I have seen in the images.”

Now, the promoter has published a new update on the British boxer, stating that he’s in a “stable condition.” Matchroom Boxing and 258 BXG also paid tribute to both Ghami and Ayodele, confirming they had died in the crash.

He wrote: “Anthony Joshua was involved in a road traffic accident in Lagos Nigeria, earlier today. With profound sadness it has been confirmed that two close friends and team members Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele have tragically passed away.

“Matchroom Boxing and 258 BXG can confirm that Anthony sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to hospital for checks and treatment. He is in a stable condition and will remain there for observation.

“Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families and friends of all those affected – and we ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time. No further comment will be made at this time.”

In an update from the Ogun State government, Nigerian officials confirmed that Joshua and one other passenger were stable and did not require further medical attention. They added that the British boxer was in touch with his family.

They said: “Anthony Joshua and another passenger were immediately evacuated to a specialised medical facility in Lagos. Following comprehensive clinical assessments, doctors have confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require any emergency medical intervention at this time. A full medical team has been assembled and will continue to monitor them closely.

“Anthony Joshua is conscious and has been in communication with his family. The Governments of Ogun and Lagos States are closely monitoring the situation and will ensure that the affected persons receive the best possible medical care. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident have also commenced.”
