Whether you call it manifestation or succumbing to public pressure, earlier today, the City of Vancouver held a press conference with Mayor Ken Sim announcing that Kits Pool will reopen on August 7, despite previous announcements saying otherwise—and causing Vancouverites to have major trust issues.
Like in any good situationship, there has been some significant hot-and-cold activity going on here. The public was assured back in April that the pool would open, then learned there would be a delay in the opening—before a statement was released in June announcing its full summer closure. The announcement was reversed on July 5, just as we started to lick our wounds and look elsewhere for our pool fix. Since the pool was initially expected to open in May, there is something to be said about better late than never.
There are still plenty of repairs needed to restore the pool to better conditions, but the City says it is committed to making short-term fixes in the meantime to ensure we have a poolside summer in 2024.
