Enzo Maresca’s future at Chelsea ‘in doubt’ amid tension with owners behind the scenes

Enzo Maresca has been linked with a sensational move to Manchester City as a replacement for Pep Guardiola and it appears he could be on the way out of Chelsea before long

Enzo Maresca’s future at Chelsea is growing increasingly uncertain following the Blues’ miserable draw with Bournemouth. The Londoners let another victory slip through their fingers at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, drawing 2-2 with the Cherries.

Sections of the home support let their feelings be known come the final whistle, with some booing at the end of the game. And that could apparently leave the Italian coach on thin ice given his relationship with the Blues’ owners has deteriorated.

According to The Telegraph, that reaction will further test Maresca’s relationship with the Chelsea ownership. All signs are reportedly pointing to a summer departure in what will be another change in management since Todd Boehly’s takeover.

It is further suggested that an earlier exit could yet happen should results not improve – Chelsea having only won one out of their last seven league games – albeit no tangible move has been made in relation to a change of manager.

Maresca is also unwilling to walk away from the job despite his outburst earlier this month. Speaking after a Premier League win vs Everton, he said: “The last 48 hours has been the worst since I joined the club because many people didn’t support me and the team.”

Asked to clarify those comments, he underlined his happiness in West London, albeit said that he had not held talks with his bosses. One complication has been talk of a move to Manchester City to replace Pep Guardiola.

Responding to those rumours, Maresca said: “It doesn’t affect me at all because I know it’s 100 per cent speculation. In this moment, there is no time for these kinds of things, first of all because I have a contract here until 2029.

“I said many times, my focus is just about this club and I’m very proud to be here. It’s speculation. One week ago, in Italy, it was the same with Juventus.

“I don’t pay attention because I know it’s not true. Now it’s important to understand the reason why this news was there. But it’s not my job – I don’t care at all.”

Chelsea currently sit fifth in the Premier League table and two points behind Liverpool, who take on Leeds on New Years’ Day. The Blues are back in action on Sunday as they travel to the Etihad for a showdown with title contenders Man City.

Maresca joined Chelsea in 2024 from Leicester City and helped the Blues to the Conference League and Club World Cup titles in his debut campaign.
