Arson probe after fire at former Eldon Arms pub in Ferryhill

Firefighters were called to the former Eldon Arms pub in Ferryhill Station on Monday, January 5 after a fire broke out around 4.40am.

Pictures showed how fire crews and officers had taped off the scene, blocking access to the Mainsforth Road and Chilton Lane roundabout.

Durham Police and the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) launched a joint probe into the incident.

Nobody was injured but a “large amount of damage” was caused to the building.

In an update on Tuesday (January 13), police confirmed the fire is being treated as arson and an investigation to establish the circumstances remains ongoing.

Firefighters remained at the scene into the afternoon after working to douse the flames of the former Samuel Smith’s pub. 

CDDFRS said three fire engines from Spennymoor and Durham used hose reels, jets and an aerial ladder platform to extinguish the blaze.
