Man United are now in talks over signing an ex-Premier League star in January, with the Red Devils immediately looking to back interim boss Michael Carrick.

United confirmed Carrick’s return on Tuesday following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal last week after just 14 turbulent months in charge.

The 44-year-old, who made 464 appearances for the Red Devils between 2006 and 2018, beat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ruud van Nistelrooy to the temporary role after reportedly impressing United’s hierarchy with his detailed plans for the remainder of the campaign.

Carrick will be assisted by former England number two Steve Holland, alongside Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion.

His first match comes Saturday when Man City visit Old Trafford for the derby, followed by a trip to league leaders Arsenal.

The appointment represents Carrick’s second spell as caretaker boss, having previously gone unbeaten across three games in November 2021 following Solskjaer’s sacking.

He’s been very forthright about his desire to join them.

He won against Villarreal and Arsenal while drawing at Chelsea, famously dropping Cristiano Ronaldo to the bench for the Stamford Bridge clash.

However, Carrick’s task this time appears significantly more challenging.

There is no doubt that the ex-Middlesbrough boss and United legend will have one eye on impressing enough to be considered for the full-time role, and qualifying for the Champions League would do wonders for that particular aim.

The Red Devils are still just three points behind Liverpool in the race for a top four finish, buoyed by the fact they have a much kinder fixture schedule due to no European football this season.

Even still, Carrick will need the full backing of INEOS if he is to guide United back to European football’s grandest stage.

Reports suggest that the club want to sign a top-level midfielder, with the likes of Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson all believed to be on United’s shortlist.

Those moves appear far more realistic for this summer, but in the meantime, United are still apparently trying to reinforce Carrick’s engine room in January.

Man United hold talks with ex-Premier League midfielder

According to journalist Ben Jacobs this afternoon, via The Football Terrace and GiveMeSport, United have held talks with an unnamed ex-Premier League midfielder in the last 24 hours.

While Jacobs isn’t at liberty to name drop the player, he does give hints — like the fact he has played in England’s top flight but is currently plying his trade outside the Premier League.

“There is one secret midfielder that Manchester United have held talks with in the last 24 hours,” Jacobs said.

“They are in talks with at least one midfielder, for a loan on a short-term deal. Whether or not it develops, let’s wait and see.

“I’m not yet in a position where I can divulge the name. It’s a midfielder who would only be available on loan. It would be until the end of the season, relatively economical and they have Premier League experience, and they are currently playing outside of England.”

It will be very intriguing to see who the player in question is as things continue to develop, but for now, we can safely assume that United are at least planning to bring in a new midfielder before deadline day.

It is a seismic boost for Carrick, who now has the major task of beating off stiff competition for a place in the top four.
