Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward
Police have launched an appeal for information following the death of a woman on the M6. The motorway was shut for hours after officers were called to a concern for welfare at the bridge of Downall Green Road, Wigan, above the M6 Southbound this morning (January 16).
Emergency services rushed to the scene of the incident which was between junction 25 and 24. Sadly, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene and enquiries are ongoing.
Formal identification has not yet taken place, but there is believed to be no suspicious circumstances around her death. The Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) is now asking for anyone with further information on the fatal collision to come forward.
They are asking for anyone who may have witnessed or been involved in the incident at around 7:50am to contact them to help with the investigation.
This includes anyone who witnessed the incident itself, that may have collided with something in the carriageway at this location or has dashcam / CCTV footage of the incident.
In the appeal, GMP added: “We would like to thank members of the public today for their patience whilst enquiries have been on-going, we understand this will have caused severe disruption.”
You can contact the SCIU directly on 0161 856 4741, quoting log 528 of 16/01/2025.
Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
