A new ‘bridge master’ has been chosen to oversee the operation, maintenance and preservation of Clifton Suspension Bridge. Tristan Ralph will be responsible for the completion of a major refurbishment project protecting the famous landmark’s 181-year-old suspension chains for another 20 to 25 years.

He will also lead on the commissioning of a new energy-efficient lighting scheme for the bridge, which was designed by engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel in 1831 and took 33 years to complete.

According to Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust, which made the appointment, Mr Ralph’s priorities will include reducing the effects of changing weather patterns on the historic structure, studying the impact of high-wind speeds and planning for the future.

Mr Ralph, who has lived in Bristol for some 25 years, has more than 30 years’ experience in civil and structural engineering, specialising in bridges and major infrastructure projects.

He has held senior leadership roles at global engineering and design consultancy Parsons Brinckerhoff, where he managed a 40-strong civil structures and ground engineering team, and at design and engineering firm Arcadis, where he served as a senior technical director for the UK rail business.

Throughout his career, he has worked on complex design-and-build engineering schemes, collaborating closely with contractors and leading multidisciplinary teams.

He described the bridge master role as “the ultimate job” for a bridge engineer. “The Clifton Suspension Bridge is a world-famous landmark and a vital transport link, I feel privileged to take on the responsibility of safeguarding its future,” he said.

“My focus will be on ensuring the bridge remains safe, resilient, and operational for generations to come.”

Dr Brian McConnell, chairman of the board of trustees, added: “We are delighted to welcome Tristan as the new bridge master for the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust. He joins us at a pivotal moment as we approach the final months of our most significant refurbishment project to date.

“With his proven engineering expertise, we’re confident Tristan will help us strengthen the bridge’s resilience, drive innovation in maintenance, and ensure its long-term safety for generations to come”.

According to the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust, balancing heritage and innovation will be “central” to Mr Ralph’s approach in his new position.

“As the bridge is a Grade-I listed structure, Tristan will represent the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust in continuing to work closely with our key stakeholders to ensure any interventions respect its historic character,” the trust added.

“While safety and longevity must come first, the trust is committed to preserving the beauty and significance of the iconic landmark.”
