Lung Still Leads Despite Declining Rates

Published

CANBERRA, Australia — Lung cancer is projected to remain Australia’s deadliest cancer in 2026, claiming an estimated 9,000 lives as part of more than 54,000 total cancer deaths expected nationwide, according to the latest data from Cancer Australia and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer
Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer

While age-standardised mortality rates continue a long-term decline thanks to better prevention, screening and treatments, the absolute number of deaths is rising because of population growth and ageing, officials said. The 2025 estimates — the most recent detailed projections available — show 53,545 cancer deaths, a figure expected to edge higher into 2026.

Cancer Australia’s October 2025 statistics and AIHW’s Cancer Data in Australia report rank the top 10 cancers by expected deaths. Here they are, based on 2025 figures that officials say will closely track into 2026:

  1. Lung cancer: 8,994 deaths
  2. Colorectal (bowel) cancer: 5,235 deaths
  3. Pancreatic cancer: 4,039 deaths
  4. Prostate cancer: 3,975 deaths
  5. Breast cancer: 3,353 deaths
  6. Liver cancer: 2,091 deaths
  7. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma
  8. Cancer of unknown primary site
  9. Brain cancer
  10. Melanoma of the skin

These 10 account for the vast majority of cancer fatalities. Upper gastrointestinal cancers as a group — including pancreatic, liver, oesophageal, stomach and biliary — narrowly edged lung cancer in raw 2024 ABS provisional data (9,301 vs. 9,119 deaths), but official 2025 projections and early 2026 indicators keep lung cancer at No. 1.

Lung cancer has held the grim top spot for decades, though smoking rates have fallen sharply. It kills more Australians than any other cancer because many cases are diagnosed late, when survival is poor. In 2025, it represented about 17 per cent of all cancer deaths. Targeted therapies and immunotherapy have lifted five-year survival for some subtypes, but tobacco remains the leading preventable cause. Health authorities urge continued anti-smoking campaigns and low-dose CT screening for high-risk groups.

Colorectal cancer ranks second, with more than 5,200 projected deaths. National bowel screening has improved early detection, yet participation lags. Experts credit the program with driving down mortality rates, but rising cases in people under 50 are worrying oncologists. “We’re seeing concerning increases in early-onset colorectal cancer,” one AIHW analysis noted in 2025 data releases.

Pancreatic cancer claims nearly 4,040 lives annually and is notorious for its dismal prognosis — five-year survival below 10 per cent. Late symptoms and lack of routine screening keep it lethal. It forms a major part of the upper GI surge that some analysts flagged in 2024 ABS figures. Research into earlier biomarkers is underway but not yet standard.

Prostate cancer kills about 3,975 men each year, though mortality rates have dropped dramatically from 63 deaths per 100,000 males in the mid-1990s to 33 in 2025. PSA testing and improved treatments get much of the credit, but over-diagnosis remains a debate.

Breast cancer claims 3,353 lives, mostly women. Five-year survival now exceeds 90 per cent for many, up from earlier decades, thanks to mammographic screening and targeted drugs like trastuzumab. Still, it remains a leading cause among women and underscores the need for continued awareness.

Liver cancer (2,091 deaths) has risen with hepatitis infections, alcohol use and obesity-related fatty liver disease. Vaccination against hepatitis B and treatment for hepatitis C have slowed growth, but rates remain elevated in some migrant communities.

Lower on the list but still significant are Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, cancer of unknown primary (where the original site cannot be found), brain cancer and melanoma. Melanoma, once a major killer, has seen mortality fall with public sun-safety campaigns and immunotherapy breakthroughs that have transformed advanced cases.

Overall, cancer accounts for roughly three in every 10 deaths in Australia. Yet the story is not all grim. The age-standardised mortality rate has fallen from 257 deaths per 100,000 people in 2000 to an estimated 194 in 2025 — a 24 per cent drop. For people in their 30s and 40s, rates have declined even more sharply.

Survival gains are real. Five-year relative survival for all cancers combined has improved steadily. Prostate cancer survival jumped from around 60 per cent in earlier decades to 96 per cent. Breast cancer rates have followed a similar path. Even lung cancer outcomes are inching upward for never-smokers and those with actionable mutations.

But challenges persist. Absolute death numbers are climbing because Australians are living longer, and the over-65 population — where cancer risk is highest — is growing fastest. Disparities remain: regional and remote areas, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and lower socioeconomic groups face higher mortality.

Prevention offers the biggest lever. Tobacco control, HPV vaccination, hepatitis immunisation, sun protection, healthy weight, limited alcohol and participation in screening programs (bowel, breast, cervical) could avert thousands of deaths. Emerging research on early-onset cancers in younger adults is prompting calls for updated guidelines.

Cancer Australia CEO Dorothy Keefe has highlighted the dual trends: “Outcomes are improving overall, but the sheer number of cases and deaths demands sustained investment in research, equitable access to care and public education.”

As 2026 unfolds, health officials will release more granular 2025 actuals and 2026 projections. For now, the message is clear: while the 10 listed cancers will dominate mortality statistics, many deaths are preventable or treatable if caught early.

Australians are encouraged to talk to their GPs about screening eligibility, adopt healthier lifestyles and stay alert to symptoms. With continued progress in science and public health, the downward trend in rates could accelerate — even as the population ages.

Why UK Businesses Are Looking Beyond British Data Centres

Published

on

In these days’s unexpectedly evolving virtual ecosystem, staying ahead method leveraging the contemporary era to ensure performance, scalability, and overall performance. Cloud infrastructure website hosting services have emerged as a cornerstone for modern organizations trying to innovate, optimize costs, and destiny-proof their operations.

The digital transformation is influencing UK businesses by enabling them to change their approach to hosting websites, applications, and different types of data based on sensitivity.

Data hosting was previously done in UK based data centers for having an easier understanding of data regulations, and to minimize latency. However, many of these businesses are now headed towards offshore VPS hosting platforms to take advantage of flexibility and lower costs.

Due to the changing conditions, more businesses will likely partner with their first offshore VPS hosting provider to gain access to data centers in foreign countries and jurisdictions. Businesses can create a more controlled and optimized data center and provide better data security safeguards than before and often at a lower cost.

The main factors of Hosting VPS Offshore

Increased Data Privacy

The growing awareness of data privacy has led to a growing demand for data hosting in countries with better privacy laws.

Lower Costs

Offshore data centers are more competitively priced than local centers, making business data hosting more affordable.

Less Data Hosting Restrictions

Less regulation of data hosting facilitates business in industries with more strict operations.

Lower Risk of Data Hosting Outages

Hosting data in multiple countries minimizes the risk of hosting data outages.

Benefits of Offshore VPS Hosting

There are several advantages of offshore VPS hosting that appeal to current day users like businesses, etc.

Helps Provide Security and Privacy

Some offshore hosting providers can help secure information as private data usually has limited access to a third party. This hosting is especially beneficial for businesses that have highly classified or sensitive information.

Enhanced Flexibility

VPS hosting allows businesses to have complete control over their configuration of data centers. Offshore hosting solutions can help provide you with more various arrangements of data centers.

Scalable Resources

Most offshore VPS hosting providers offer expandable resources so businesses can scale as they need to without facing restrictions as are common with domestic hosting providers.

Ensured Service Continuity

VPS hosting helps to provide services over the offshore data centre to ensure service continuity even with disruptions as regional/boundary hosting would.

Potential Challenges to Consider

As with any technology, you are more likely to experience problems when you are venturing to and offering that many services.

Common Considerations

Latency

If you have a data centre that is located far from your primary users, you are more likely to experience high latency.

Increased Compliance

Compliance requirements may tend to be tough for the user, as you are in the jurisdiction of both the country in which you are operating and the data centre hosting.

The availability of Support

There are instances when the support is not as responsive due to time zone variations.

Industries where Offshore VPS Hosting is Beneficial

When it comes to offshore VPS hosting, some applications and industries find it most beneficial.

Ideal Scenarios Include:

  • E-commerce platforms that are aiming for an international audience
  • Media and content websites and companies that have flexible publishing policies
  • Startups and SMEs that are working with a limited budget for hosting
  • Privacy-sensitive businesses that handle highly confidential information

The Outlook for UK Businesses and Their Hosting Requirements

The preference for offshore VPS hosting is likely to continue as businesses of all types seek hosting that is flexible, resilient, and economical. Buyers of hosting will most likely see an increasingly narrow performance gap between offshore hosting and local hosting as advancements in cloud systems and accommodations for international networking take effect.

Final Thoughts

It is the competitive UK businesses that choose offshore VPS hosting in preference to traditional (UK) data centers for their enhanced flexibility, operational economy, and enhanced privacy, who are most likely to prosper in the global marketplace. Potential hosting issues should be planned for, and, in most cases, the advantages of offshore hosting out-weigh the potential problems. Enthusiastic businesses are well advised to consider the advantages of offshore VPS hosting.

Oil Price Today (May 11): Crude oil back above $100 on no breakthrough in US-Iran peace talks. What are experts saying?
Oil prices rose more than $3 a barrel on Monday after the United States and Iran failed to reach an agreement on a Washington-backed peace proposal, while the Strait of Hormuz remained largely shut, keeping global oil supplies under pressure.

Expectations of a near-term resolution to the 10-week-long U.S.-Iran conflict faded after US President Donald Trump on Sunday rejected Iran’s response to a U.S. peace proposal, calling it “unacceptable”.

Brent crude futures gained $3.18, or 3.14%, to $104.47 a barrel by 2336 GMT, building on Friday’s 1.23% rise. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude climbed $3.09, or 3.24%, to $98.51 a barrel after settling 0.64% higher in the previous session. The prolonged conflict has caused extensive damage across Iran and Lebanon, disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and pushed global energy prices sharply higher.

Iran’s response, released through state television on Sunday, focused on ending the conflict across all fronts, particularly in Lebanon, while also addressing the safety of shipping routes through the blocked Strait of Hormuz. Within hours of the proposal becoming public, Trump dismissed it in a social media post.
Trump is due to arrive in Beijing on Wednesday and is expected to discuss Iran among other issues with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Reuters reported citing US officials.
Market attention now shifts squarely to President Trump’s visit to China this week. Experts say there is hope he can persuade Beijing to leverage its influence over Iran to push for a comprehensive ceasefire and a resolution to the ongoing disruption in the Strait of Hormuz.
Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser said on Sunday that the world has lost about 1 billion barrels of oil supply over the past two months, adding that energy markets would take time to stabilise even if flows resume.

According to Iranian state media, Tehran’s proposal includes demands for compensation for war-related damages and a reaffirmation of Iranian sovereignty over the strait. The semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that Iran also called on the United States to end its naval blockade, guarantee no further attacks, lift sanctions and remove restrictions on Iranian oil sales.

The U.S. proposal had suggested ending hostilities first before moving to negotiations on more contentious issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme.

Despite a month-old ceasefire and nearly 48 hours of relative calm, hostile drones were detected over several Gulf nations on Sunday, underlining the continuing risks facing the region.

Analysts said the market remains on edge. Haitong Futures noted that the ceasefire may only be temporary, adding that stalled negotiations between the U.S. and Iran could spark renewed escalation and drive oil prices even higher.

Nuvama Institutional Equities said a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz could disrupt nearly 20 million barrels per day of crude flows. Under such a scenario, oil prices could potentially surge to between $110 and $150 per barrel.

FDA recalls chocolate products found to contain undeclared drug ingredients

Spring & Mulberry is expanding its recall of select chocolate bars to include all 12 of its product lines over concerns of possible Salmonella contamination, according to federal regulators.

The Friday announcement marks the second widening of the recall affecting the North Carolina-based company, a brand known for sweetening its chocolate bars exclusively with dates.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the move follows an investigation that identified a batch of dates as the likely source of the contamination.

“The investigation has now identified a single lot of date ingredient used in the production of the company’s chocolate as the most likely source of contamination,” the agency said.

In response, Spring & Mulberry is recalling all finished products made using the implicated lot of date ingredients.

While eight products were previously affected in the last recall update announced in January, the latest expansion now includes all 12 flavors listed by the company.

The update adds the Blood Orange, Coffee, Pure Dark and Sea Salt varieties to the recall list, according to federal regulators.

The first two rounds of recalls initially affected Mint Leaf flavor, Earl Grey, Lavender Rose, Mango Chili, Mixed Berry, Mulberry Fennel, Pecan Date and Pure Dark Minis, which remain included in the recall.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause “serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” the FDA said.

Symptoms among healthy individuals may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
