Singapore PM salary benchmark updated to $2.85M in executive refresh

Singapore’s prime minister is set to get a whopping 64% pay increase next month thanks to a boost in ministerial compensation.

Starting on October 15, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will see his salary increase to 3.6 million Singapore dollars – roughly the equivalent of $2.85 million USD.

Singapore already has some of the world’s highest ministerial salaries. The latest changes to political salaries are the first in 15 years.

For ministers and other political officeholders, Wong clarified that immediate adjustments will be limited to a one-off increase of up to 9%, depending on individual circumstances, including performance.

He also pledged to donate the entire salary increase he receives to charitable causes for the next five years.

“The sums involved are more than what most citizens earn, so I understand why Singaporeans scrutinize them closely,” Wong told parliament.

He added that while leaving pay levels frozen would have been “easier politically,” maintaining an updated system is necessary to attract capable people who might otherwise choose careers in the private sector.

Under Singapore’s executive compensation model, political salaries are benchmarked against the median earnings of the country’s top 1,000 corporate earners — with a mandatory 40% haircut to reflect public service.

Political salaries had remained unchanged since the framework was introduced in 2011. A 2017 review recommended adjustments in line with the benchmark, but the government decided not to raise salaries at the time, while a scheduled 2023 review was deferred amid economic uncertainty.

Coordinating Minister for Public Services Chan Chun Sing noted in a parliamentary statement that while major corporate CEOs in Singapore earn S$6 million to S$7 million annually, government salaries are not intended to match private sector levels.

“If money is your main reason for wanting to be a Minister, frankly, you are not the person we are looking for,” Chan said. “We will never be able to match the pay of all the people we hope to get…. But we cannot pretend that such opportunity costs do not exist.”

The framework features a “clean wage” structure, with no pensions or hidden perks. Compensation is structured as roughly 65% fixed pay and 35% variable pay, with the variable component reflecting both individual performance and national socioeconomic outcomes such as real GDP growth, unemployment and income growth.

Singapore’s political salaries remain among the highest globally, structured in part to deter public sector corruption. By comparison, the U.S. president earns a set salary of $400,000 annually, the Swiss president earns roughly $606,000, and the British prime minister receives approximately $230,000.

AI Security Institute bypassed by Anthropic model

AI Security Institute bypassed by Anthropic model

Anthropic did not submit its most powerful artificial intelligence model to the UK government’s AI Security Institute for testing before releasing it last week, the first time the company has bypassed the British body.

Claude Mythos 5.1 was made available only to US vetting organisations. The model, designed specifically for cybersecurity and life sciences, is distributed through what Anthropic calls “trusted access programs” rather than released publicly.

In a blog post last week, the company said the model was “only available to a set of US organisations, though we’re co-ordinating with the US government to expand access to a broader set of domestic and international partners as quickly as possible”. The story was reported by the Financial Times.

Anthropic said access runs through two schemes: a Cyber Verification Program for defensive security professionals, and a Life Sciences Verification Program that it said was developed in partnership with the US government and has enrolled its first participants.

An earlier model in the same family, Claude Mythos, prompted crisis meetings among finance ministers and central bankers over fears the technology could be turned on the global financial system. Canada’s finance minister, François-Philippe Champagne, told media the model was “serious enough to warrant the attention of all the finance ministers”.

Export controls and access fears

The Trump administration imposed an export ban on the earlier generation of the model over the summer, after the US Department of Commerce flagged concerns that guardrails built into the models could be bypassed. Access was subsequently restored, but the move prompted fears that access to the world’s most advanced models could be cut off without warning.

The AI Security Institute was established in November 2023 by Rishi Sunak, who was prime minister at the time. Now a directorate of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, it tests and monitors the latest developments in AI models “to equip governments with a scientific understanding of the risks posed by advanced AI”, according to the institute’s own account of its work.

It is widely seen as a world leader in AI safety and has helped to shape international approaches to AI safety and security. Last week it tested OpenAI’s Astra model, the most advanced offering from the maker of ChatGPT, which was released last Thursday and which OpenAI classifies as having a “critical” level of cybersecurity capability.

The Cabinet Office said: “The AI Security Institute continues to collaborate closely with industry partners, including Anthropic, to make models safer.”

Researcher resigns over safety

Jacob Coxon, a researcher at Anthropic specialising in training new AI models, has resigned from the company, warning about the dangers of developing ever more powerful models.

Coxon said he had worked for three years at both OpenAI and Anthropic. “Neither company is acting with responsibility. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives,” he said on X.

Responding to Coxon’s resignation on X, Evan Hubinger, who leads Anthropic’s research on ensuring AI is aligned with human values and intentions, said there was a more than 10 per cent chance that AI could “kill all humans” in the next decade.

“I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to,” he said.

Separately, the UK Artificial Superintelligence Security Bill, a private member’s bill drafted by the campaign group ControlAI and proposed by the Labour MP Alex Sobel, was due to be presented in parliament yesterday. The bill would prohibit the development of superintelligent AI in Britain and require the government to monitor and restrict possible precursors.

Anthropic was contacted for comment.

A Smarter Way To Optimize Modern BPO Workspaces

Published

on

ASUS NUC 16 Pro

Want to maximize every square meter of your Philippine BPO without sacrificing performance? The ASUS NUC just might be the right solution for your business needs. It occupies up to 80% less desktop space yet delivers full business PC performance. It offers workspace efficiency, business productivity, and office modernity without breaking the bank. What more could you ask for?

The Growing Cost of Office Space

Nothing in this world is ever constant – and that office space you’ve been paying for could be many times the cost of what you’ve originally paid for when you just started out your BPO. With rising commercial rental costs, the need for efficient floor planning also increases.

With a space-saving PC like the ASUS NUC, you get to have more workers on the floor. Workspace optimization with this business-class mini PC helps you maximize your floor density for better office space efficiency.

Why Traditional Desktops Consume Valuable Workspace

Let’s face it. While bulky tower PCs have long been the face of businesses in the modern world, they lead to desk clutter because they occupy more space than space-efficient computing solutions available today.

Here are some stats for visuals: A 15L tower PC usually measures around 6.1 inches (width) x 11.2 to 11.7 inches (depth) × 13.2 to 27+ inches (height), while the ASUS NUC Pro+ and 16 Series are just around 5.3 inches (width) x 4.6 inches (depth) x 1.6 inches (height).

It’s easy to see now how the traditional tower desktops consume valuable workspace that you could have maximized to add more workers on the floor without crowding.

You even have to deal with cable management challenges with the trusted but older models.

Thanks to the ASUS NUC’s enterprise-ready design, these issues are a thing of the past. Your employees get more workspace, and your IT department won’t face cable management issues from the old computers.

The ASUS NUC Space-Saving Advantage

Amazingly, the ASUS NUC 16 Pro occupies up to 80% less desktop space than a traditional 15L tower desktop. This easily translates to cleaner workstations, freed-up valuable desk space, and improved employee comfort in high-density contact center environments such as BPO centers like yours.

This modern, space-saving PC’s compact design enables businesses like yours to accommodate more workstations within the same office footprint than traditional tower desktops do, leading to a more scalable workplace infrastructure and better space utilization.

It’s impressive how a change in computers can improve overall operational efficiency so much, right?

Built for Modern Business Environments

Still unsure whether it’s time to shift to this modern space-saving PC range? Here are more advantages of the ASUS NUC:

  • VESA mountable
  • Tool-less upgrade design
  • Easier deployment and maintenance

This computer supports VESA mounting, which allows the device to be mounted behind compatible monitors.

What does this mean for your business? Well, it eliminates desktop clutter and maximizes usable workspace. This could mean a lot for BPOs, especially if you’re operating hundreds or thousands of workstations on the floor.

The ASUS NUC also features an easy one-hand latch and spring-loaded chassis design. This allows for quick access to memory and storage components. While this is unlikely to be a major concern for your floor workers, it will greatly benefit your IT team’s efficiency. Given that the IT team is generally just a couple of people compared to the rest of your workers, this added efficiency can be highly beneficial to your company.

In short, it can lead to easier workspace deployment and computer maintenance.

Maximizing Floor Density

For BPO companies in the Philippines like yours, smaller workstation footprints help maximize office space and make it easier to accommodate growing teams. Since BPO operations often need to scale quickly to meet client demands, compact workstations such as the ASUS NUC enable more employees to be housed in the same office space without compromising productivity.

Maximizing workspaces with the ASUS NUC 16 Pro (Image credit: ASUS)

They also provide greater flexibility in arranging the workplace. Office layouts can be easily adjusted to create additional workstations, training areas, meeting rooms, or support spaces as business needs change. This helps BPOs like yours expand operations, onboard new accounts, and manage business growth more efficiently while reducing the costs associated with relocating or leasing additional office space.

Conclusion & Call to Action

So, you see how ASUS NUC delivers full business PC performance in an ultra-small form factor? This workplace optimization solution helps Philippine BPOs maximize valuable office space while maintaining your business-class performance.

This simply means that this space-efficient computer allows companies like yours to enjoy the benefits of a compact device without sacrificing productivity, reliability, or even manageability. It benefits your floor workers, your IT team, and the entire business.

So, what are you waiting for? Replace your clunky old tower computers now with this modern space-saving computer to increase your workstation density without sacrificing your workers’ performance.

Awarded by invitation only, fellowship is reserved for senior directors who have demonstrated sustained leadership, championed good governance and made a significant contribution to business and society. Fellows are recognised as ambassadors for the values of the IoD and are entitled to use the professional designation FIoD.

Mr Selby, director and founder of Pontypool-based Pro Steel Engineering, has led IoD Wales as chair since 2020 and will step down from the role in November.

Throughout his tenure, he has played a leading role in strengthening relationships with both the Welsh Government and UK Government, helping to ensure the voice of Welsh business is represented at the highest levels. He has also been instrumental in supporting membership growth and providing strong leadership as a new Wales team was established.

Gareth Jarman, founder and director of international HR consultancy Gentium International, has been an IoD member for eight years and has served as chair of IoD Mid Wales for the past five.

Mr Selby said:“It is a tremendous honour to be awarded Fellowship of the Institute of Directors. The IoD has played an important role throughout my career and it has been a privilege to serve our members in Wales over the past six years.

“The strength of the institute has always been its members and volunteers, who freely give their time and expertise to support one another and strengthen the wider business community. Southwest to debut airport lounges in four cities, with more to come

Southwest Airlines planes get ready to take off from Denver International Airport in Colorado on Nov. 6, 2025.

Southwest Airlines on Wednesday unveiled plans for its network of airport lounges that it’s been hinting at for months.

The carrier said its first lounges would debut in Austin, Texas; Baltimore; Honolulu; and Nashville, Tennessee. It said construction has already begun at those airports and it expects to open those locations in late 2027.

The airline is partnering with Chase on the effort, saying it wants to build on that company’s Sapphire Reserve Lounge Network.

“Our lounges will be a natural extension of that experience, offering Customers a place to relax and experience the Southwest brand in a new way,” Tony Roach, Southwest executive vice president, said in a statement. “The introduction of a lounge network represents a strategic investment in Rapid Rewards and deepens our 30-year partnership with Chase.”

The airline said customers can get into its lounges with a new, premium Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card that Chase will issue. It said the card will launch next year, but didn’t provide any additional details about how much it would cost.

Southwest said it’s planning to open seven more lounges over the next several years “across high-demand business and leisure markets.”

CEO Bob Jordan has been talking about the airline getting into lounges for months, telling CNBC in December that it was “actively pursuing” the possibility of having a network of locations.

“I think lounges would be a huge, next benefit for our customers,” Jordan said at the time.

Southwest’s move comes as carriers from Delta Air Lines to JetBlue Airways — along with credit card companies like American ExpressCapital One and Chase — have been building airport lounges to reel in and retain higher-spending consumers.

Southwest, which carries more customers domestically than any other airline, has drastically changed its business model over the past year and a half. It got rid of its famed open seating in favor of assigned seats and started charging customers to check bags to increase revenue as pressure ramped up from activist Elliott Investment Management.

Harry, Meghan ‘Surprised’ By King Charles’ Letter Reaffirming Their Status As Private Citizens In UK

Published

on

Mega Millions

LONDON — Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were “surprised” by a letter issued under King Charles III’s direction confirming their status as private citizens, according to a spokesperson for the couple, after the guidance was distributed to government and military officials without advance notice to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The letter, sent Monday under the direction of the Lord Chamberlain, a senior palace official, was addressed to “senior stakeholders” across the U.K. government, military and those who represent the British royal family. It confirmed that Harry and Meghan will remain non-working royals following their return to Britain last month, that they will not use the titles of His and Her Royal Highness, and that the pair’s position is comparable to that of private citizens.

According to the BBC, the letter stated plainly that “there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.” It further clarified that the couple’s charitable work “is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity,” adding, “In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.” The letter also specified that all correspondence and administrative questions related to the couple should be directed to their own office, which the letter noted will continue operating separately from the Royal Household.

Despite the letter directly concerning their own status, Harry and Meghan were not informed of its contents before it was distributed and later made public. A spokesperson for the couple addressed the situation in a statement Tuesday.

“They were a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance,” the spokesperson said.

According to reporting cited by Hello! magazine, the letter was sent to Harry’s team before being made public Monday afternoon, though it’s understood the couple did not have adequate time to seek clarification on the guidance before it circulated more widely. The document was addressed specifically to government departments, military officials and Lord Lieutenants, the monarch’s representatives in individual counties across the U.K.

Buckingham Palace indicated the letter was prompted by a wave of inquiries seeking clarity on the couple’s official standing following their return to Britain. According to the BBC, the letter was created after “a number of requests” were received asking for clarification on Harry and Meghan’s status.

The letter’s release came shortly before a reported meeting of the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures, known as Ravec, the body responsible for making decisions regarding royal security arrangements in the U.K. That timing raised questions among some royal commentators about whether the letter’s issuance was connected to ongoing deliberations over the couple’s taxpayer-funded security now that they are living in Britain. According to reporting from Hello!, Harry is currently awaiting the conclusion of a Risk Management Board threat assessment, with Ravec expected to determine at its meeting whether the Sussex family should receive expanded security protections.

Royal aide Lord Benyon, whose office is responsible for organizing the King’s ceremonial and public-facing events, indicated that any specific operational security questions arising from the letter should be directed to the relevant police authorities rather than to the palace directly.

Harry and Meghan returned to the United Kingdom with their two children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, last month, more than six years after the family relocated to the United States following their 2020 departure from senior royal duties. The couple is believed to have flown into Britain privately from California, according to the BBC. Archie and Lilibet are set to begin school in Britain this month, having already been enrolled according to a person close to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex cited in earlier reporting.

Despite their relocation to the U.K., the couple has retained their existing properties abroad, including their Montecito, California, estate and a separate vacation property in Portugal, according to reporting from E! News, suggesting the family’s move to Britain, while significant, does not represent a complete and permanent departure from their prior base in the United States.

The clarification of Harry and Meghan’s status echoes the terms the couple originally agreed to when they first stepped back from royal duties in 2020, formalizing an arrangement in which they retained their titles as Duke and Duchess of Sussex while relinquishing their status as working royals and the associated use of “HRH” honorifics in an official capacity.

The letter’s release adds another layer to the broader public conversation surrounding the family’s return to Britain, which has already generated extensive coverage of the couple’s motivations, their children’s educational arrangements, and the current state of relations between Harry and other senior royals, including his brother, Prince William. Harry and Meghan made what was described as their last-ever formal royal appearance together at a Commonwealth Games service at Westminster Abbey, according to Hello!’s coverage of the family’s recent public engagements.

With the palace’s letter now formally clarifying the couple’s official position for government and military stakeholders, attention is likely to remain focused in the coming days on the outcome of the Ravec security review, along with continued questions about how visibly Harry and Meghan intend to engage in British public life going forward, given their now-clarified status as private citizens with ongoing commercial and charitable interests rather than active members of the working royal family.
