Oil, gas and borrowing costs surge as fears over Middle East escalate

The price of oil has jumped to $105 a barrel amid signs the conflict in the Middle East will not be resolved quickly, fuelling fears that inflation could accelerate.

With the conflict between the US and Iran in the Gulf intensifying in recent days, the cost of both crude oil and gas has been rising sharply. Brent crude went back above $100 a barrel on Wednesday and has continued to climb.

The war has led to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, preventing supplies of oil and gas from the Gulf from reaching global markets.

US and UK long-term borrowing costs also surged to their highest level in decades.

Speaking at a Republican Party convention in Texas on Wednesday, President Trump said he did not think the fighting would end until after the US mid-term elections in November.

Concerns have also grown after Iran-aligned Houthi forces were reported to have seized Yemen’s port of Mokha, a key Red Sea port.

The move could elevate fears of further shipping disruptions.

The price of natural gas has also been soaring on wholesale markets. In the UK, it rose above 200p a therm for the first time since the end of 2022.

Storage levels in Europe are much lower than normal for the time of year, and the need to fill reserves ahead of the winter has helped to push up prices.

From Precise Nutrition to Global Active-Lifestyle Aesthetics: Taiwan’s MCB Takes Center Stage at Vitafoods Asia 2026

From Precise Nutrition to Global Active-Lifestyle Aesthetics: Taiwan’s MCB Takes Center Stage at Vitafoods Asia 2026

Taiwan’s largest nutritional ingredient manufacturer draws media attention by its strategic visual design with an approach that extended beyond its product portfolio of advanced sports nutrition, next-generation plant protein and clear protein water solutions.

BANGKOK, Thailand — Vitafoods Asia 2026, Asia’s leading nutraceutical event, brought together more than 16,000 industry professionals, 650+ exhibitors and participants from over 80 countries, connecting suppliers, manufacturers, distributors and brand decision-makers across the global health and nutrition value chain on ingredients and formula solutions.

At this international event, a Taiwan-based MCB — Ming Chyi Biotechnology—drew attention with its distinctive exhibition concept that extended beyond the conventional technical aesthetic of the nutritional ingredient sector, showcasing advanced sports nutrition, next-generation plant protein and clear protein water private-label solutions. Integrating sports, wellness, plant-based nutrition and contemporary lifestyle elements, MCB transformed its booth into an application-oriented brand experience, demonstrating how nutritional ingredients and technologies can translate into products for everyday consumers.

The design and exhibition approach drew media attention and was featured by a prominent news outlet, highlighting MCB’s evolving position from a traditional ingredient manufacturer to a global nutrition solutions partner.

Sports Nutrition Evolves into Everyday Performance and Lifestyle Aesthetic

One of the key market shifts reflected in MCB’s exhibition strategy is the continued convergence of sports, wellness and everyday lifestyle. The sports nutrition market is expanding beyond professional athletes as consumers increasingly adopt performance-oriented lifestyles. The rise of mass-participation fitness formats such as HYROX demonstrates how the boundary between competitive sport and everyday fitness is becoming less defined, driving demand for nutrition solutions that support not only athletic performance, but also hydration, recovery, muscle performance and daily wellness.

This shift also reflects the evolution of the modern fitness consumer. As demonstrated by active-lifestyle brands such as ALO Yoga and On Running, physical activity is increasingly integrated into urban life, work, travel, fashion and personal well-being. Nutrition follows the same trajectory, moving beyond its traditional role as a tool for athletic performance to become part of everyday routines spanning fitness, travel, active aging, health management and daily nutritional supplementation.

Against this backdrop, MCB is expanding its role from ingredient manufacturing to integrated nutrition solutions. By combining ingredient expertise, formulation capabilities, sensory optimization and advanced powder processing, MCB develops solutions including plant-based protein, clear protein water, functional lipid powders and instantized ingredients. These capabilities address growing consumer expectations for products that are nutritionally effective, easy to consume, highly soluble and enjoyable to drink

The shift is particularly evident in plant protein and clear protein applications, where consumer expectations extend beyond protein content to texture, transparency, flavor and overall drinking experience. MCB’s approach is designed to bridge the gap between ingredient technology and consumer-ready products, helping brands translate nutritional functionality into commercially viable solutions for sports nutrition, active lifestyles and everyday wellness.

MCB Presenting a New Global Image for Taiwan’s Nutrition Industry

“International exhibitions are not simply places to display products. They are important platforms for a brand to communicate its position and value to the global market,” MCB stated. “When customers enter the MCB booth, we want them to see more than individual ingredients. We want them to imagine how these ingredients can become the next commercially successful product.”

MCB believes that modern B2B communication can no longer rely only on specifications, capacity, and pricing. As consumers increasingly value health, physical activity, quality of life, visual design, and brand purpose, ingredient manufacturers must also be able to translate scientific technologies into clear and engaging market language.

Founded in Taiwan in 1987, MCB has nearly four decades of experience in nutritional ingredients, spray-dried powders, microencapsulation, formulation development and finished-product manufacturing. Its products are exported to more than 35 countries across Asia, Europe, North America, the Middle East and Oceania, serving consumer brands, ingredient distributors, nutritional product manufacturers and retail partners.

Today, MCB’s annual revenue has surpassed NT$1 billion. As Taiwan’s largest nutritional ingredient manufacturer and one of the country’s leading exporters of functional powders and nutrition solutions, the company produces 4,000–5,000 metric tons of powdered ingredients annually and has the capacity to manufacture and package more than 50 million servings of finished nutritional formulations each year.

Investing in Global Manufacturing and Brand Visibility

MCB invests tens of millions of New Taiwan dollars each year in international exhibitions, corporate identity, product communication, overseas marketing, and global customer support.

For MCB, international exhibitions are not simply short-term sales activities but part of a long-term global brand strategy. From both architecture and product visuals to visitor flow and business hospitality, every element reflects the company’s commitment to international markets. The company participates in major nutrition and health exhibitions across Asia, Europe, and North America, using a consistent and highly recognizable brand identity to strengthen its relationships with global consumer brands, distributors, manufacturers, and retail partners.

MCB is also expanding its research and manufacturing infrastructure in Taiwan. The company is investing more than NT$1.2 billion in the phased construction of an advanced ingredient research and precision powder manufacturing center. The new facility incorporates international sustainability concepts, including LEED Gold and WELL-oriented planning.

These investments demonstrate MCB’s long-term commitment to becoming more than a reliable manufacturer. The company aims to serve as a strategic partner capable of helping customers identify market trends, accelerate product development, and successfully commercialize innovative ideas.

Fewer bakers establish sustainability targets

Fewer bakers establish sustainability targets

The 2026 State of the Baking Industry: Sustainability and the Future of Baking study, conducted by Cypress Research, reveals that despite some engagement retraction in sustainability initiatives, the majority of bakers and supplier companies still prioritize sustainability as a part of their business practices. Many of these companies are shifting their focus to sustainability initiatives that also support their business goals, such as improved efficiency and reduced costs. However, the 2026 study also reveals a trend of fewer companies setting measurable targets for their sustainability initiatives compared to 2023 levels.

On the environmental side, significantly fewer ingredient manufacturers reported formal targets for programming in waste reduction, materials recycling, energy reduction, sustainable packaging, renewable energy use and regenerative agriculture. Far fewer bakers reported established key performance indicators (KPIs) for reducing deforestation-based farming practices and humane farming. Significantly fewer equipment manufacturers reported measuring energy reduction or water reduction programs. The study findings themselves do not indicate a reason behind this decline.

“Environmentally, having targets in place is a low-hanging fruit, so I’m curious about the rationale for not seeing higher percentages here,” said Marjorie Hellmer, president of Cypress Research.

Even without measuring the between-year differences, most of the initiatives included in the 2026 study had less than half of baker and supplier survey respondents reporting that their companies with measurable/formal targets. Waste reduction (74%), materials recycling (62%) and energy reduction (56%) were the only exceptions, and only on the baker side.

2026 targets were much more likely to be set for social and governance initiatives such as employee safety, wages, wellness, financial performance reporting and monitoring company performance.

Many of these initiatives saw more than half of respondents reporting that their companies had targets in place, and that share had grown since 2023.

GSA and OpenAI partner to give US federal workers 50% AI discount

GSA and OpenAI partner to give US federal workers 50% AI discount

The federal government under President Donald Trump reached an agreement with OpenAI on a landmark deal to equip government employees with the most cutting-edge artificial intelligence models at a major discount, Fox News Digital has learned.

The General Services Administration (GSA) secured an agreement in which the federal government will receive a 50% discount on access to OpenAI’s most advanced models without any minimum spending requirements, according to a document outlining the deal obtained by Fox News Digital.

The deal will also allow other government entities, both in the federal government and throughout state, local and tribal governments, to utilize the same models at the same discount, according to the document.

The GSA also used its new OneGov procurement strategy — a new Trump-era GSA initiative to secure massive discounts on government acquisitions, particularly in the software sector, by buying in bulk — to secure the deal.

GOVERNMENT AGENCY SLASHES MORE CONSULTANT CONTRACTS IT SAYS WILL SAVE TAXPAYERS BILLIONS

“GSA’s OneGov strategy is positioning the federal government for the future by integrating advanced, AI‑enabled capabilities into agency operations,” GSA Administrator Edward C. Forst told Fox News Digital in a statement.

“Our agreement with OpenAI provides a secure, governmentwide framework that helps agencies adopt AI at scale and strengthens their ability to carry out mission‑critical work,” Forst continued.

The agreement centers on data protection and governance, incorporating GSA’s AI terms and conditions while restricting model access to environments already authorized by the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP).

“Under President Trump’s leadership, this initiative enhances federal performance, reduces administrative burden, and ensures that agencies can devote more time to delivering results that directly benefit the American people,” Forst also said.

OpenAI CEO and founder Sam Altman also praised the agreement.

“Giving public servants secure access to the best AI tools can help government be more efficient, strengthen cybersecurity, and improve the services people rely on,” Altman said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital.

“We are honored to continue collaborating with GSA to advance key goals of America’s AI Action Plan,” Altman concluded.

Laura Stanton, the Acting Commissioner of GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service, contextualized the agreement as a major pillar of GSA’s emerging OneGov strategy, arguing that access to frontline technology was key to allowing GSA decision makers to test products before making major purchase decisions.

“We launched OneGov AI deals because agencies wanted the ability to try new technologies before committing to a lengthy acquisition. As agencies increasingly integrate AI into their regular operations, providing consumption-based access is the next logical step,” Stanton said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital.

“We welcome additional AI technology companies to engage with GSA and explore opportunities to bring their capabilities to agencies through OneGov as we continue to expand choice, increase competition, and deliver value for taxpayers,” Stanton concluded.

Fanatics Sports & Casino debuts unified app ahead of 2026 NFL season

Fanatics Sports & Casino debuts unified app ahead of 2026 NFL season

The 2026 NFL season has officially kicked off, and for Fanatics, it’s yet another football campaign to impact and enhance the fan experience.

For Fanatics Betting and Gaming, it began with the launch of Fanatics Sports & Casino, a single app that was launched last week that gives fans one destination to bet, trade or play and much more.

Fanatics Betting and Gaming CEO Matt King called last night’s start to the season “Christmas Eve” and referred to Thursday night’s bout between the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams in the first-ever NFL game in Australia as “Christmas Day.” That’s because King couldn’t be more excited for how his sector of the wide-ranging Fanatics ecosystem continues to grow.

“My belief is we’re building a set of businesses here throughout the entire fan journey to make being a fan better, and I think as we do that, we will be a beloved brand. If we can make your fan journey actually better because you’re doing it end to end with Fanatics, I think there’s a huge power to that,” he told FOX Business in a recent interview.

For fans, Fanatics Sports & Casino unites everything that Fanatics Sportsbook, Fanatics Casino and Fanatics Markets has to offer in a single experience, where FanCash, the brand’s loyalty currency that can be redeemed in a variety of ways, is accumulated into one balance and integrated into the Fanatics ONE loyalty program.

From the coast of California to the concrete jungle of New York, the app automatically tailors the experience to each customer’s location, allowing for a seamless journey that was a priority in the eyes of King.

FANATICS SPORTSBOOK LAUNCHES PROGRAM TO IDENTIFY, PUNISH SPORTS BETTORS WHO THREATEN ATHLETES ON SOCIAL MEDIA

“I think there were two things really important to us before we launched the single app,” he explained. “One is exactly what you’re talking about: the regulatory complexity that exists is large-growing between state-regulated products, federal-regulated products. What state is available where and underlying restrictions. I never want to force that complexity on consumers. I want to make it as simple and easy as possible. So, the geo-aware nature was incredibly important.

“Then, I would say the second thing is it was important before we put it all in one place that you tried to make the proposition as consistent as possible. So, if you think about the ability to earn FanCash, we’re launching Fair Play in prediction markets, which is a prediction-market first, and the nuances are admittedly a little different. But the general points we wanted to make sure are consistent because those aspects of the proposition are what drove us to become the number three sportsbook in the country very quickly.”

Fanatics Sportsbook is the fastest growing sportsbook in the U.S., and one of the main reasons is due to the innovation King knew he and his team needed to come up with. One of those key components is FanCash, which no competitor has. Customers are able to use it in 20 different ways from purchasing game tickets, to betting directly on games, to filling out their memorabilia and collectibles. Over 50% of new customers state that FanCash is a primary reason they stay with Fanatics Betting and Gaming.

Then, there’s the introduction of “Fair Play” in 2024, seeing a pain point with sports betters when it came to players being ruled out due to injury, especially for games in the NFL. Fanatics has since become the first to offer “First Half Injury Protection” as well as “Second Half Injury Protection” at no charge to the bettor as part of the new “Fair Play Max.”

New Fanatics NFL ad

Actor Luke Wilson is featured in Fanatics Sports & Casino’s new ad for the 2026 NFL season. (Fanatics)

With the 2026 season underway, Fanatics is helping out fans more with Forward Progress Protection, where the dreaded quarterback kneel, or running backs losing yards late in games, won’t hurt the bettor so long as that player hits his over on rushing prop bets.

A prime example of “Fair Play” came in the NFL’s opener, as it was available for Sam Darnold’s injury just five snaps into the Seattle Seahawks’ season, as well as Patriots new star A.J. Brown suffering a high-ankle sprain in the second half. Fanatics were the only ones who offered it for both sportsbook and prediction markets.

Competitors have done their own similar bet protections since Fanatics came out with “Fair Play,” but King said he’s “really proud” to see that because it means they’re the leader – not the follower.

“To see people copy, almost rip-off verbatim, what you’re doing is kind of entertaining,” he said. “But look, from day one, we knew we needed a reason for people to want to play with us. I think our brand is the best in the industry, but I want to give people a very clear, concise reason why we’re better. And I think we’ve given a couple of those.

FANATAICS LAUNCHES A NEW GLOBAL STUDIO FOR PREMIUM SPORTS AND CULTURAL ENTERTAINMENT

“I also think a lot of it stems from the foundational belief of I would always rather give a dollar back to a fan than spend a dollar on marketing. Obviously, we need to spend money on marketing to make people aware of stuff we do. But the philosophical point is – and Fair Play was the best example of this – if I can find a place to reinvest money where other sportsbooks put in their pocket back to the fans, particularly in moments where we know they’ll share those moments with their friends, those are the points of leverage we look for. Fair Play is a great example because, hey, we’re sitting at the bar together. My bet wins, your bet loses even though it was the same bet because of Fair Play, I’m going to shove it in your face and laugh at you for not using Fanatics. And then ideally you’re going to use Fanatics the next week.”

Fanatics Betting and Gaming also made an impact in the betting and prediction market world by becoming the first to ban credit cards from providing funds, offering universal self exclusion for its products, and joining the ProhiBet Bad Actor Program to punish bettors for harassing athletes.

And as King put it, “Building brands today is making your customers your advocates and build your brand through that army of advocates,” which he sees far better than running TV ads with celebrities in it. But Fanatics did get involved with beloved actor Luke Wilson, Pro Football Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson and college gymnastics national champion Livvy Dunne for their season-long NFL campaign called “Fanatics Town Hall.”

The ad is built on what King, his team, and the rest of the Fanatics ecosystem does each day: putting everything into their experience just like fans put everything into their love of their sports and teams.

“It’s incredibly exciting because we get to be a reflection of the fan’s passion,” King said. “Fans love everything about sports and the bar that we hold ourselves to is let’s bring that same passion and make the experience better. It’s the old expression from the comic books, right? ‘With great power comes great responsibility.’ We have an incredible set of assets within the business. We have an incredible set of relationship. And we have an incredible responsibility to the fans to make the experience good as it can be.

“We wake up every morning thinking about how we can do that and we go to bed every night thinking did we actually make it a little better today. That drives us everyday.”

It’s a new season, it’s a new look for Fanatics Betting and Gaming, and the realm of possibilities of where this brand can go in terms of impacting the fan experience continues to grow.
