(VIDEO) Porter Airlines Flight From Victoria to Toronto Canceled After Toddler Refuses Seatbelt in Canada
A Porter Airlines flight from Victoria, British Columbia, to Toronto was canceled Thursday after a toddler refused to sit down and buckle their seatbelt before takeoff, stranding an entire planeload of passengers overnight and forcing the flight to depart the following morning instead.
The incident occurred on Porter Airlines flight PD444 after the aircraft had already closed its doors and left the terminal at Victoria International Airport, heading toward the runway for takeoff. According to a statement from Porter Airlines given to CTV News, cabin crew members realized during preparations for departure that the child was standing in their seat rather than sitting and secured, prompting immediate concern from the flight crew.
Neither Parent Nor Crew Could Secure the Child
Both the toddler’s parent and Porter cabin crew members made repeated attempts to get the child buckled into their seat, but were ultimately unable to do so. Facing a safety issue that could not be resolved before departure, the crew made the decision to abort takeoff entirely rather than proceed with an unsecured child aboard.
“A young child was standing in their seat and would not secure their seatbelt,” Porter Airlines said in its statement. “The aircraft could not take off in this unsafe condition, so the crew elected to return to the terminal and have the passengers disembark.”
A Late-Night Cancellation That Stranded Passengers
By the time the plane returned to the gate and the family, along with their belongings, had been taken off the aircraft, the airline needed to complete additional required paperwork, including refiling the flight plan and rebalancing calculations for the reduced passenger load. That process pushed well past 12:30 a.m., the cutoff time after which Victoria International Airport’s runway closes for the night, according to Porter Airlines. With no ability to depart before the runway shutdown, the airline had no option but to cancel the flight entirely and reschedule it for the following day, forcing the toddler’s family and every other passenger aboard to spend an unplanned night in Victoria.
The rescheduled flight ultimately departed Victoria at 10:49 a.m. local time on Friday and landed in Toronto at 6:16 a.m. Eastern time, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware. Porter Airlines issued an apology to affected passengers, saying in its statement that it regretted “the effect” the cancellation had on everyone aboard the original flight.
Not the First Time a Child’s Behavior Has Disrupted a Flight
Thursday’s cancellation adds to a growing list of recent incidents in which a young child’s behavior on board has led to significant flight disruptions. Last month, a frustrated passenger took to Reddit to describe a delay of roughly an hour on a flight to Sweden after what they described as “incompetent parents” struggled to get their 3-year-old to remain seated during preparations for takeoff. According to the account, the child was deemed too old to safely sit on a parent’s lap, and after extended crying and resistance, the family was ultimately asked to deplane so the crew could redo weight and balance calculations, refuel the aircraft and remove the family’s checked bags before departure could proceed. “I would seriously pay extra to go on adult-only flights,” the passenger wrote, a comment that drew mixed reaction online, with some commenters sympathizing with the frustrated traveler and others noting that even experienced parents can struggle to manage a toddler mid-meltdown under pressure.
A Pattern of Disruptions Specific to Porter Airlines
This is not the first high-profile incident involving Porter Airlines and disputes over passenger conduct tied to young travelers. In 2023, an entire WestJet flight from Calgary to Toronto was canceled after a dispute escalated between crew members and a family over whether one of their children, ages 19 months and 3 years, was required to wear a face mask under Canada’s transportation mandate at the time, a standoff that ultimately required police to board the aircraft and remove the family before the flight was scrapped entirely.
Porter Airlines has also faced scrutiny in the past over how it has handled situations involving young passengers traveling without a guardian. In 2024, the airline drew public criticism after a 14-year-old girl traveling alone was removed from a flight from Toronto to Victoria because of a weight and balance issue, with staff reportedly unaware at the time that she was an unaccompanied minor. The girl was left to spend roughly 24 hours stranded at the airport before being rebooked, prompting her family to publicly criticize the airline’s handling of the situation and call for policies ensuring minors are automatically provided additional support when removed from a flight.
A Broader Debate Over Flying With Young Children
Incidents like Thursday’s cancellation have continued to fuel broader public debate over airline policies and passenger etiquette involving young children on commercial flights. Some travelers have expressed growing frustration over disruptions tied to unruly or unsettled toddlers, with online discussions periodically floating the idea of designated child-free flights as a potential solution, an idea that remains largely unimplemented across most major airlines due to logistical and legal complications, but continues to resurface whenever a high-profile incident like Thursday’s cancellation draws renewed attention.
With the rescheduled flight having since completed its journey to Toronto without further incident, Porter Airlines has not indicated whether it plans to introduce any additional policy changes in response to Thursday’s disruption. Given the airline’s history of previous passenger-related controversies involving young travelers, the incident is likely to renew scrutiny of how Porter and other carriers balance passenger safety requirements against the practical challenges of managing unpredictable behavior from very young children during the critical moments before takeoff.

My name is Shomon, and I will now present the financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year ending March 2027. First, please turn to Page 1. This page summarizes the key points of our earnings announcement regarding the overview. Revenue increased due to a recovery in musical instrument sales and a weakening yen. Despite higher procurement costs, core operating profit increased, driven by an improved product mix resulting from growth in digital musical instruments, price optimization and favorable exchange rates.
Regarding our full year earnings outlook, while uncertainties remain, such as rising procurement costs and the situation in the Middle East, we are maintaining our previous forecast for May 2026 for revenue and core operating profit, supported by further price optimization efforts and a weaker yen. However, we are revising our net profit forecast upward from the previous estimate following the refund of U.S. tariffs. Please turn to the next page.
