BlackRock CEO Larry Fink recently reassured investors, saying, “The world is fine.” On one hand, it’s comforting to hear that from someone managing trillions of dollars. On the other, it’s deeply disturbing — almost dystopian.

Because for whom, exactly, is the world fine? And in what way is a CEO entitled to speak on behalf of the entire world? I respect him, but c’mon… no one person should speak so all-encompassing about “The World” as a whole.

It would have been better to phrase it like this:

“Our world, the one of investing, is fine.”

For regular people — the ones struggling with homeownership, rising food costs, or stagnant wages — it’s anything but fine. Yet, when someone like Fink makes a sweeping statement like this, he’s not talking about everyday life. He’s talking about markets. He’s talking about the continuity of capital. And he’s talking to a very specific audience — the institutions and ultra-wealthy investors who move money, not those trying to survive paycheck to paycheck.

Fink’s comment reflects the deep disconnect between the 1% and the rest of the world. When he says, “the world is fine,” he’s referring to a world where capital still flows…
