10 Best Rom-Coms of the Last 10 Years

Published

on

Camila Mendes and Archie Renaux, holding drinks and looking at each other in Upgraded

Once declared unprofitable and dead, the romantic comedy genre has made a remarkable comeback. When cinematic universe and superhero movies thrived in late 2000s and early 2010s, romantic comedy became a niche offering. The genre used to rule the box office charts with movies like Pretty Woman, The Proposal and My Big Fat Greek Wedding. However, they have recently found new life as streaming platforms rise and they embrace fresh storytelling and perspectives.

This list takes a look at some of the best romantic comedies released in the past decades. Most of them may still lean to the proven and tested formula, but these movies add more spice that make it more appealing to modern audiences. The movies on this list range from bestselling book adaptations to original stories, proving that the genre still has a lot to give. One thing for sure, we will be seeing more and more romantic comedies in the years to come.

‘Upgraded’ (2024)

Upgraded follows Ana Santos (Camilla Mendes), an ambitious art gallery intern who is accompanying her demanding boss on a business trip to London. While she is initially set up to fly coach on a different flight by her sly colleagues, she is unexpectedly upgraded to business class and meets the charming William (Archie Renaux). However, Ana claims that she’s the CEO of the company and has to keep up appearances with William’s family, while also doing her actual job.

In this modern take on Cinderella, the film’s romance surprisingly takes a backseat and focuses on Ana’s character. It refreshingly puts her ambitions and career intuitions at the forefront, showing that she actually has what it takes to earn the position (unlike, say, Emily in Paris). The romance itself is quite charming. Camilla Mendes leads the film with confidence and ease, making it enjoyable throughout. It might follow a familiar formula, but it understands what the movie needs, which are likable characters, plenty of romantic tension, and believable stakes. It’s one of many solid romantic picks on Prime Video.

‘Anyone But You’ (2023)

Anyone But You centers on Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell), whose perfect meet cute and first date ends in disaster, leaving them convinced they can barely tolerate each other. Months later, they are both invited to a destination wedding in Australia, where they have to play nice with one another and even pretend they’re a happy couple for the benefit of friends and family.

Drawing from Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, the film works because it fully embraces the timeless appeal of the enemies-to-lovers formula while giving it a modern energy. Its biggest strength lies in the electric chemistry between Sweeney and Powell. Right from the opening scene, they are simply irresistible to watch together. Their insane on-screen connection even sparked real-life romance rumors. The film marked the return of rom-coms in theaters when it became a sleeper hit when it was released in the usually crowded Christmas release date.

‘People We Meet on Vacation’ (2026)

Based on the bestselling novel by Emily Henry, People We Meet on Vacation centers on longtime best friends Poppy (Emily Bader) and Alex (Tom Blyth), who have spent a decade taking annual summer trips together despite having completely opposite personalities. Their trips eventually come to a stop after a falling out. When Alex’s brother is getting married, they have to face their storied past and open up a new chapter for them.

The friends-to-lovers trope has been the backbone of so many romance movies, and in this film it is once again put to work effectively. Anchored by exciting and unforgettable performances by Emily Bader as the free-spirited Poppy and the more restrained Tom Blyth, it is easy for audiences to also fall in love with them and their adventures. While the title is slightly misleading (they did not meet on a vacation!), the emotion and chemistry of the two characters are palpable. Despite resorting to the usual rom-com formula, the final act resolution is somehow more modern and refreshing. Thanks to this success, there will definitely be more Emily Henry adaptations.

‘Always Be My Maybe’ (2019)

Ali Wong and Randall Park as Sasha and Marcus at a party in Always Be My Maybe

Always Be My Maybe is about childhood best friends Sasha Tran (Ali Wong) and Marcus Kim (Randall Park). Their friendship came to an end after awkward sex during their late teens. Sixteen years later, Sasha has become a world-famous celebrity chef while Marcus remains in San Francisco, living a quieter life. When Sasha returns home to open a new restaurant, the two reconnect.

As one of Netflix’s best rom-coms, Always Be My Maybe is such a standout because of its ability to make familiar material feel deeply personal. The film is a more mature rom-com so it has a deeper emotional maturity as well as a distinct cultural identity courtesy of its two leads. Ali Wong and Randall Park are incredible comedic actors and both of them collaborate so well, and, as the kids say today, maximize their joint slay. Everything just felt natural between them, from the awkward moments to the romantic gestures. To add the cherry on top, the film also has a killer cameo from Keanu Reeves that should not be missed.

‘Set It Up’ (2018)

Set It Up follows two overworked assistants, Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell), who try to set up their extremely demanding bosses, Kirsten (Lucy Liu) and Rick (Taye Diggs), so that they can find some time off. As they execute their matchmaking scheme, Harper and Charlie develop a close friendship that soon blossoms into romance.

Set It Up was one of the strongest romantic comedies to come out after the genre fizzled out. With the strong main cast, the film boasts not one but two entertaining love stories. Deutch and Powell are simply very lovable presences on screen, and their relationship’s progression is very natural and believable. This results in seemingly simple scenes turning out to be very moving and memorable, such as the now famous pizza scene. With sharp dialogue and energetic pace, the film revives the genre for streaming glory. It is one of the best rom-coms to come out in the 2010s.

‘Long Shot’ (2019)

Long Shot sees the unlikely pairing of Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron), the U.S. Secretary of State, and journalist Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen). They reunite after so many years when Charlotte used to babysit Fred. Now, the outspoken Fred is recruited to be her speechwriter as she gears up for a presidential campaign.

Long Shot is one of the most unique rom-coms to ever be released. It combines romance, raunchy comedy and even political satire into one film. The central relationship between Charlotte and Fred is very well-balanced and doesn’t feel like a total romantic wish fulfillment. Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen are incredibly hilarious in this film but also can be vulnerable when the story calls for it. The film also has a fun supporting cast and cameos which includes Alexander Skarsgård and Andy Serkis. It’s a refreshing and very welcome twist on the romantic comedy formula.

‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ (2018)

Lana Condor and Noah Centineo as Peter and Lara from To All the Boys I've Loved Before looking into each other's eyes

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before follows Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor), a shy high school student whose private love letters are accidentally mailed to every boy she has ever had feelings for. As all the boys question her letters, she gets into a fake relationship with one of the recipients, Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo), to convince another crush that she no longer has feelings for him while Peter agrees to this to make her ex jealous.

Based on a bestselling book by Jenny Han, the film was a phenomenon when it was released on Netflix. It uses the tried-and-true fake relationship trope while also being sincere and heartfelt to teenage emotions and drama. Lara Jean is a well-rounded and relatable protagonist whose insecurities make her easy to root for, while Peter, initially cold, evolves into a thoughtful person as their relationship progresses. Lana Condor and Noah Centineo are simply lovable as their characters. The movie also has warm family dynamics and comforting atmosphere that add to its qualities. The film is followed by two sequels and a spin-off series, but this first film is a lightning in a bottle.

‘Palm Springs’ (2020)

Nyles and Sarah drinking while floating on a pool in 'Palm Springs' Image via Hulu

Palm Springs follows wedding guests Nyles (Andy Samberg) and Sarah (Cristin Milioti) as they are trapped in a mysterious time loop where they endlessly relive the same day. Embracing the freedom, the pair indulge in reckless adventures before confronting the emptiness that accompanies endless repetition. They begin questioning not just how to escape the loop, but also wonder if they could have a proper relationship in the future.

The time loop is a premise that has been used in virtually every genre ever since Groundhog Day popularized it. However, Palm Springs utilizes it to explore its emotional themes instead of using it as a cheap gimmick. The themes of loneliness and personal growth resonate strongly as the film hits the comedic beats. The chemistry between Samberg and Milioti feels so effortless that the high-concept premise flows without any obstacle. The film is also supported by a strong ensemble that includes J.K. Simmons, Camila Mendes and June Squibb. Released during the pandemic, it is one of the best films of 2020.

The Academy Has Decided
Your Perfect Film Is…

Your answers have pointed to one Oscar Best Picture winner above all others. This is the film that was made for the way your mind works.

Parasite

You are drawn to films that operate on multiple levels simultaneously — that begin in one genre and quietly, brilliantly migrate into another. Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite is a film about class, desire, and the architecture of inequality that manages to be darkly funny, deeply suspenseful, and genuinely shocking across a single extraordinary running time. Your instinct is for cinema that hides its true intentions until the moment it’s ready to reveal them. Parasite is exactly that — a film that rewards close attention and punishes assumptions, right up to its devastating final image.

Everything Everywhere All at Once

You want it all — and this film gives you all of it. The Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All at Once is one of the most maximalist films ever made: action comedy, multiverse sci-fi, family drama, existential crisis, and a genuinely earned emotional core that sneaks up on you amid the chaos. You are someone who responds to ambition, who doesn’t want cinema to choose between being entertaining and being meaningful. This film refuses that choice entirely. It is overwhelming by design, and its overwhelming nature is precisely the point — because the feeling of being crushed by infinite possibility is exactly what it’s about.

Oppenheimer

You are drawn to cinema on a grand scale — films that understand history not as a backdrop but as a force, and that place their characters inside that force and watch what happens. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is a film about the terrifying gap between what we can do and what we should do, told with the full weight of one of the most consequential moments in human history behind it. You want your films to feel important without feeling self-important — to earn their ambition through sheer craft and the gravity of their subject. Oppenheimer does exactly that. It is enormous, complicated, and refuses easy comfort.

Birdman

You are drawn to films that foreground their own construction — that make the how of the filmmaking part of the what it’s about. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman, shot to appear as a single continuous take, is cinema examining itself through the cracked mirror of a fading actor’s ego. You respond to formal daring, to the feeling that a film is doing something that probably shouldn’t be possible. Michael Keaton’s performance and Emmanuel Lubezki’s restless camera create something genuinely unlike anything else — a film that is simultaneously about creativity, relevance, self-destruction, and the impossibility of ever truly knowing if your work means anything at all.

No Country for Old Men

You are drawn to cinema that trusts silence, that refuses to explain itself, and that treats dread as a form of meaning. The Coen Brothers’ No Country for Old Men is a film about the arrival of a new kind of evil — implacable, arbitrary, and utterly indifferent to the moral frameworks we use to make sense of the world. It is one of the most formally controlled films ever made, and its controlled restraint is what makes it so terrifying. You want your films to haunt you, not comfort you. You are not interested in resolution if resolution would be dishonest. No Country for Old Men is honest in a way that most cinema never dares to be.

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ (2018)

Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) travels to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), expecting a simple trip to meet his family in Crazy Rich Asians. Instead, she discovers that Nick is part of the wealthiest and most influential families in Asia. Rachel is scrutinized by Nick’s family and friends who question whether their world is the right place for her.

Beyond its glamorous world and cultural specificity, the film succeeds in resonating with a global audience. The core story about Rachel’s journey to prove herself to Nick’s family is very compelling and relatable. Director Jon M. Chu is able to translate the cultural customs and traditions for a broad audience, which contributed to the film’s box office success. The movie also marked a significant cultural milestone by featuring a predominantly Asian cast in a major Hollywood romantic comedy. With strong performances from Constance Wu, Michelle Yeoh and Gemma Chan, the film proved that classic romantic comedies can still thrive when paired with fresh perspectives like this.

Cha Cha Real Smooth follows Andrew (Cooper Raiff), a recent college graduate who finds himself uncertain about his future while working as a party host for bar and bat mitzvahs. During one of these parties, he meets Domino (Dakota Johnson), a young mother navigating her own complicated life while raising her autistic daughter. They form a friendship at first but then their relationship becomes deeper.

Combining coming-of-age and romance themes, Cha Cha Real Smooth breaks away from the traditional structure of a rom-com. Instead, it focuses on the messy realities of growing up as well as being an adult with responsibilities. The dialogue is very intimate, which adds to the authenticity of it all. The performances by writer-director Raiff and Johnson further strengthen the film. This film features arguably the best Dakota Johnson performance so far. Its romance feels bittersweet because it recognizes that genuine connections do not always lead to conventional happy endings. The film was a Sundance darling when it premiered, earning the festival’s Audience Award in 2022.

Adam Driver Rumored to Be Marvel Studios' New Magneto for the MCU's X-Men Reboot : Coastal House Media

A major Marvel rumor is making waves online, with reports claiming that Adam Driver is being lined up to play Magneto in Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated X-Men reboot.

The casting rumor quickly gained traction after surfacing through industry scoopers before spreading across social media, Reddit, and several entertainment news outlets. While Marvel Studios has yet to confirm the report, Driver’s name has rapidly become one of the most talked about possibilities for the iconic mutant leader.

If the rumor proves true, Driver would become the third major actor to portray Erik Lehnsherr on the big screen, following legendary performances by Sir Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender. The role is widely considered one of Marvel’s most complex characters, requiring an actor capable of balancing both villainy and sympathy, something many fans believe Driver has consistently demonstrated throughout his career.

Adding even more excitement to the speculation is the timing. Marvel Studios is expected to return to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con later this month, and many insiders believe the presentation could serve as the stage for the studio’s first official X-Men casting announcements. While rumors continue to point toward Hall H as the place where Marvel could unveil its new mutant lineup, the studio has not confirmed that any X-Men casting announcements are planned, making the speculation just that for now.

Recent reports have suggested Marvel is assembling a fresh roster of mutants following the events of Avengers: Secret Wars, with younger actors reportedly being sought for characters like Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, and Nightcrawler. Veteran actors are still believed to be in the mix for legacy characters such as Magneto and Professor X, making Driver’s rumored involvement a believable fit if Marvel chooses to go that route.

Magneto, Marvel

Driver is no stranger to blockbuster franchises, having portrayed Kylo Ren throughout Disney’s Star Wars sequel trilogy while also earning Academy Award nominations for Marriage Story and BlacKkKlansman. His ability to portray emotionally layered characters has made him a longtime fan favorite for several Marvel roles.

For now, however, fans should approach the rumor with caution. Marvel Studios has remained silent regarding its X-Mencast, and numerous names have been linked to the reboot over the past year without becoming official.

With San Diego Comic-Con just around the corner, fans may not have to wait much longer to learn who will lead the next generation of Marvel’s mutants. Whether Adam Driver ultimately dons Magneto’s iconic helmet remains to be seen, but if the Hall H rumors prove accurate, the official reveal could be just days away.

Travis Kelce’s Wedding Ad Sparks New Fan Backlash

Published

on

Travis Kelce at The 'Players Party' 2022 Co-Hosted By Michael Rubin, MLBPA And Fanatics

Fresh off one of the most talked-about celebrity weddings of the year, Travis Kelce is facing a new wave of criticism, this time over a promotional campaign that appeared to capitalize on the couple’s highly publicized nuptials.

While many fans celebrated the playful nod to his marriage to Taylor Swift, others accused the NFL star of turning a deeply personal milestone into a marketing opportunity, igniting a spirited debate across social media.

The debate began after Accelerator Active Energy unveiled a new advertisement featuring Travis Kelce, who serves as both an ambassador and co-owner of the zero-sugar energy drink brand.

Rather than quietly congratulating the NFL star on his marriage, the campaign leaned heavily into the wedding itself.

One image shared on Instagram showed Kelce smiling over his shoulder while holding a can, with the words “Happily. Ever. After,” written above it.

Another featured a vintage red pickup truck decorated with “Just Married” across the back as cans of the beverage trailed behind it, an apparent nod to Kelce and Swift’s wedding at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

The company reinforced the theme in its caption, writing, “The love story continues. CONGRATS @killatrav!!!”

The campaign quickly made its way to Reddit, where critics argued the advertisement blurred the line between celebrating a personal milestone and monetizing it.

Several commenters accused Travis Kelce of turning one of the biggest moments of his personal life into another branding opportunity.

One user remarked, “To anyone who believes this marriage is anything but a business arrangement: I have some beach property in Kansas to sell you.”

Another user with similar sentiments shared, “I feel like I’m being gaslighted when calling out this blatant monetization of an egotistical couple. Please please let them fail with their endeavours.”

Others were far less subtle. “This is embarrassing. This is the stuff you expect off those scummy influencers who post their kids online not from a (what I’m aware, I’m not American) successful sports person married to a A List pop star,” one angry user shared.

As criticism mounted, attention shifted away from the wedding references and toward the campaign’s creative execution.

Some Reddit users became convinced parts of the advertisement had been created using artificial intelligence after spotting what they believed were visual inconsistencies throughout the images.

One Reddit user pointed to several details, writing, “Holy AI. I need another New Yorker to confirm that I’m not far off, but if you stand at 34th & 6th, the Empire State Building is that far away, and you wouldn’t see it head on like that, only from the side.”

They also added, “And to be able to see the building and Macy’s at the same time as this picture suggests, Macy’s would have to be on your left hand side.”

Others described the campaign as unsettling rather than innovative, with one person writing, “SUPER weird. Subtle marketing would work so well for them but they rolled out their nuptials in the most obvious, tacky way.”

Kelce Also Found Plenty Of Fans Defending The Campaign

Not everyone saw the advertisement as a misstep. On Instagram, many supporters embraced the campaign as a fun extension of Travis Kelce and Swift’s wedding celebrations, filling the comments with congratulatory messages instead of criticism.

“This ad is so good. Congrats to our beautiful souls, Travis and Taylor,” one fan wrote.

Another commented, “Love me some accelerator and Travis!! Go chiefs and go Taylor!! Ready to stock up!!” while a third added, “Congratulations! Such a beautiful day of celebration for all who love Travis and Taylor!”

A fourth fan also noted, “Ah this is so cute. Congratulations t and t,” while a fifth added, “Congratulations!!!! I am very proud of both y’all fr a love story.”

Travis Kelce And Taylor Swift’s New Companion Delights Fans

Even as debate continues over Kelce’s wedding-themed advertisement, the newlyweds have also given fans something far less controversial to celebrate.

Swift and Kelce reportedly expanded their family by quietly welcoming a fluffy white Samoyed into their home, marking a new chapter in their life together after tying the knot earlier this month.

While many only recently began speculating about the pup after it appeared in a framed wedding photo, sources shared that the couple actually adopted the dog months before saying “I do.”

The pet was recently spotted accompanying Kelce after he stepped off Swift’s private jet in Florida, further fueling excitement among fans.

The addition is especially notable because Swift has long been known as a devoted cat owner to Meredith Grey, Olivia Benson and Benjamin Button, making the Samoyed her first publicly known dog.

You took the red pill a long time ago — probably before anyone offered it to you. You’re a systems thinker who can’t help but notice the seams in things.

  • You’re drawn to understanding how the system works before figuring out how to break it.
  • You’d find the Resistance, or it would find you — your instinct for spotting constructed realities is the machines’ worst nightmare.
  • You function best when you have access to information and the freedom to act on it.
  • The Matrix built an airtight prison. You’d be the one probing the walls for the door.

The Wasteland

The wasteland doesn’t reward the clever or the well-connected — it rewards those who are hard to kill and harder to break. That’s you.

  • You don’t need comfort, community, or a cause larger than the next horizon.
  • You need a vehicle, a clear threat, and enough fuel to outrun it — and you’re good at all three.
  • You are unsentimental enough to survive that world, and decent enough — just barely — to be something more than another raider.
  • In the wasteland, that distinction is everything.

Blade Runner

You’d survive here because you know how to exist in moral grey areas without losing yourself completely.

  • You read people accurately, keep your circle small, and ask the questions others prefer not to answer.
  • In a city where humanity is a legal designation rather than a feeling, you hold onto something that keeps you functional.
  • You’re not a hero. But you’re not lost, either.
  • In Blade Runner’s world, that distinction is everything.

Arrakis

Dune

Arrakis is the most hostile environment in the known universe — and you are precisely the kind of person it rewards.

  • Patience, discipline, and political awareness are your core strengths — and on Arrakis, they’re survival tools.
  • You understand that the long game matters more than any single victory.
  • Others come to Dune and are consumed by it. You’d learn its logic and earn its respect.
  • In time, you wouldn’t just survive Arrakis — you’d begin to reshape it.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Star Wars

The galaxy far, far away is vast, loud, and in a constant state of violent political upheaval — and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

  • You find meaning in being part of something larger than yourself — a cause, a crew, a rebellion.
  • You’d gravitate toward the Rebellion, or the fringes, or whatever pocket of the galaxy still believes the Empire’s grip can be broken.
  • You fight — not because you have to, but because standing aside isn’t something you’re capable of.
  • In Star Wars, that willingness is what makes all the difference.

I Play Rocky Trailer Reveals the Inspiring Story Behind Sylvester Stallone’s Greatest Fight : Coastal House Media

Netflix’s Overlooked R-Rated Action Comedy Brings Famous Noir Detective To Life

Netflix's Overlooked R-Rated Action Comedy Brings Famous Noir Detective To Life

By Matthew Swigonski

There’s just something about buddy cop movies that makes them so entertaining. From the heaping helping of cheesy one-liners to the eventual uncovering of some nefarious conspiracy, the buddy cop recipe might remain the same, but it’s tried and true. Although it might be overlooked, the Netflix original film Spenser Confidential is an entertaining addition to the genre.

A Modern Take On A Classic Character

spenser confidential

Don’t let the Netflix original title fool you, Spenser Confidential is based on a character that has been decades in the making. First introduced in 1973 in the novel The Goldwulf Manuscript, by author Robert B. Parker, Spenser has been around the block once or twice. As a detective, he’s as hard-nosed as he is intelligent.

Parker wrote 40 novels detailing the adventures of the witty detective until his death in 2010. Since 2013, author Ace Atkins has taken over the detective series. With nearly 50 years of Spenser material to work with, Netflix decided to green-light a film adaptation of Atkins’ novel Robert B. Parker’s Wonderland in 2018.

Mark Wahlberg Is Spenser

spenser confidential

In March 2020, Netflix released Spenser Confidential on its streaming platform. The film is directed by veteran director Peter Berg, who has directed films such as Lone Survivor, Patriot’s Day, and Mile 22. The screenplay is penned by screenwriters Sean O’Keefe and Brian Helgeland.

Tapped to star as the titular character was frequent Berg collaborator Mark Wahlberg. The longtime actor may not be known for being the world’s greatest actor, but he can certainly play the role of a foul-mouthed determined cop. Actors Winston Duke, Alan Arkin, Bokeem Woodbine, and Iliza Shlesinger help round out the cast.

Teaming Up With Hawk

spenser confidential

Spenser Confidential follows Spenser after he is sentenced to prison after assaulting police captain John Boylan (Michael Gaston). But after he does his time, it appears that the former cop has put his past behind him and moved on. Spenser is released from prison and finds a place to stay with Hawk (Winston Duke), an up and coming MMA fighter.

However, things take a messy turn when Boylan is murdered, making Spenser a suspect in the case. To make matters worse, another detective also winds up dead shortly after. Smelling something fishy going on, Spenser decides to investigate the case himself.

A Predictable But Satisfying Outing

spenser confidential

Unbeknownst to Spenser, his impromptu investigation catches the eye of a small group of dirty cops. With the help of his friend Hawk, Spenser must quickly unravel the mystery before the dirty attempt to tie up loose ends.

For most diehard Spenser fans, Spenser Confidential might seem like a bit of a letdown. The plot is slightly watered down to fit into the 110 minute runtime. With little to no surprises in the story, the movie can also be predictable at times.

Despite its predictability, the movie is an enjoyable experience to sit back and watch Wahlberg and Duke play off of each other. The duo work very well together in their respective roles. Shlesinger is also a breath of fresh air, utilizing a surprisingly effective Boston accent in a comedic role.

While not groundbreaking, Spenser Confidential is a fun buddy cop movie. With solid performances and a decent amount of action, there’s plenty to like about this movie. Maybe it’s not the best film out there, but it is certainly worth a watch.

Babylon 5 Stars Favorite Episode Is A Nearly Perfect Hour Of Sci-Fi

Babylon 5 Stars Favorite Episode Is A Nearly Perfect Hour Of Sci-Fi

By Jonathan Klotz
| Updated

Babylon 5 was intricately plotted out from the very beginning; this is made clear in the eighth episode of Season 1, “And The Sky Full Of Stars,” which not only calls back to the pilot episode, “The Gathering,” but also lays the groundwork for a grand conspiracy. It was one of many episodes written by creator J. Michael Straczynski and has become a fan favorite thanks to the performance of both Michael O’Hare as a captured and tortured Sinclair and Christopher Neame as the sadistic interrogator Knight Two. It also gets to the heart of an early series mystery: what did happen at the Battle of the Line to end the Earth-Minbari War?

The Earth-Minbari War

There’s no secret that Earth was going to lose against the Minbari. Humanity’s technology was no match for the Minbari ships, and yet, the Minbari surrendered to Earth. As mentioned in “The Gathering” by one of the Minbari, Sinclair has a “hole in his mind” and can’t recall one day during The Battle of the Line. That’s what the unnamed Knight One (Judson Scott) and Knight Two (Neame) have arrived at the station to find out. They have the theory that Sinclair has been compromised and is a Minbari Sleeper Agent.

By abducting Sinclair and putting him in an elaborate digital reconstruction of Babylon 5, Knight Two wants to torture the information out of the Commander.  Using pain and psychological warfare by walking Sinclair through his military career, up to the day so many of his comrades died, Knight Two relentlessly digs at the truth (and chews the scenery with a purposely hammy performance), when Sinclair gives in, dives into his missing memory, and recalls his time on a Minbari ship where he met the Minbari Grey Council. And Delenn was there.

Michael O’Hare’s Favorite Episode

“And The Sky Full Of Stars” was one of O’Hare’s favorite episodes, and for good reason. He had brothers who served in the military and wanted to respect the real danger that comes from serving your country. The incredible moment where he’s turning and seeing his comrades killed, over and over with each turn, was a bit of stage direction suggested by O’Hare himself.

The wham moment of the episode, which reveals Delenn (Mira Furlan) being there while Sinclair was a Minbari prisoner, would go on to impact the rest of Babylon 5. Up to this point, Delenn had been the most reasonable of the ambassadors, a representative for the Minbari Religious Caste, and at no time gave a hint that she was directly involved with the Grey Council. With one lift of a hood, everything fans thought they had figured out regarding Human/Minbari relations went right out the window.

Originally, Walter Koenig was supposed to take on the role of Knight Two, but his health prevented him from being available for filming, resulting in the character of Bester being created for him. Patrick McGoohan, creator and star of the legendary sci-fi series The Prisoner was the second choice, but he was also unavailable. It all worked out, as Christopher Neame’s performance was so good, it’s still praised by fans to this day.

Babylon 5 eventually revealed the entire mystery behind the Grey Council and the Minbari, along with Sinclair’s ultimate destiny, but it took awhile to get there. Since there was always a story in place, unlike other sci-fi shows that claimed to have a plan when none existed, “And The Sky Full Of Stars” is able to pay off what came before, set up what comes later, and, in retrospect, stand out for laying all the pieces in front of the audience before they even knew the puzzle existed.

Growing Pains’ Ashley Johnson Talks Almost On-Set Kidnapping

Tracey Gold Says Fat Jokes on Growing Pains Fueled Her Anorexia

Growing Pains alum Ashley Johnson revealed she was almost kidnapped as a child while filming the hit ‘90s sitcom.

Johnson, 42, recalled the terrifying experience during the Wednesday, July 8, episode of her “Weird Kids” podcast, detailing that members of the show’s live studio audience would stand close to actors as they exited their trailers.

“I’m walking with my mom and I just remember some guy hops out of the line and he grabs me up and starts booking it,” Johnson, who joined the cast as a six-year-old when she began portraying Chrissy Seaver, said. “He ended up, clearly, going to jail. He had a gun.”

The child star, who currently works as a television voice actress, added that on-set security helped her avoid a very dangerous situation. “All I remember is, like, there was security that somehow got on him after some time. The security comes out, they wrestle him down [and] I just remember flying around in the air,” she told her podcast cohost, Taliesin Jaffe. “I was clueless as to what was happening but I was very upset and they were talking to me about it after.”

Tracey Gold’s experience filming Growing Pains wasn’t always filled with laughs. While playing Carol Seaver on the Emmy-winning comedy series, Gold, 55, said  “fat jokes” made about her character ultimately had a lasting impact on her real-life physical and mental health. “In the beginning, the Carol Seaver and Mike Seaver [played by Kirk Cameron] relationship […]

Johnson added that she was unable to process the moment as a child, recalling her surprising response to crew members who checked in on her. “I just said, ‘I think I’m going to be in trouble … he took one of my shoes,’” she said. “I had one slipper [and] it wasn’t my shoe, it was wardrobe’s shoe. They got him … [security] saved me.”

The actress also claimed that prior to the almost-kidnapping, a fan of Growing Pains sent in a letter that threatened deadly consequences. “[It read] ‘I am coming to set and I am going to bring a gun and I am going to murder some of the cast,’” Johnson recalled.

Johnson joined Growing Pains, which starred series regulars Kirk Cameron, the late Alan Thicke, Joanna Kerns, Jeremy Miller and Tracey Gold as well as guest star Leonardo DiCaprio during its final season, in its fourth season.

It ran on ABC from 1985 to 1992 and centered on the Seavers, a family with close bonds both on-screen and away from the cameras.

Cameron, 55, said in an interview with Today two days after Thicke’s death following a heart attack at age 69, that the Seaver family felt like a real family. “We laughed and cried together, shared birthday celebrations, Christmas parties, holidays and worked together with the crew as a team to make a really special TV show,” he told the outlet at the time. “We weren’t just a TV family. In many ways, we were a real family.”
