10 Bonkers Animated Shows That No One Remembers Today
Animation is a medium, not a genre, and it’s a medium perfectly suited for some of the most bonkers, wildly over-the-top TV shows that the small screen has ever seen. After all, the fact that animation throughout history has allowed creators almost infinite visual creativity has obviously resulted in several creators taking full advantage of that fact to deliver some truly wild shows.
Whether it’s an animated series for kids, like the aptly-titled Bonkers; or one that’s definitely not for kids, like Frisky Dingo, the most bonkers animated TV shows in history are proof of why cartoons are worthy of significantly more respect than they tend to get nowadays. What other medium could possibly be able to deliver experiences this delightfully wacky? Even though these shows have been forgotten over the years, they should all be considered essential viewing for fans of over-the-top television.
10
‘Bonkers’ (1993–1994)
There are very few shows in the Disney Channel’s catalog more fittingly titled than Bonkers, a spin-off of Raw Toonage‘s short series He’s Bonkers. Heavily inspired by the success of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, this is just as bonkers an animated experience, telling the story of the titular out-of-work toon, who joins the Hollywood Police Department to help his partners catch animated criminals.
Virtually anyone who loves Roger Rabbit is pretty much guaranteed to love Bonkers just as much. Blending surreal slapstick with elements of the detective procedural genre in ways as kooky as they are entertaining, it’s one of the most irresistibly fun cartoons in the Disney Channel’s history. It has heart, it has some fantastic animation, and it has plenty of exquisite cartoonish world-building.
9
‘The Maxx’ (1995)
MTV broke plenty of new ground in adult-oriented animated television during the ’90s. This included the creation of Oddities, a label for Eric Fogel‘s The Head and Sam Kieth‘s The Maxx. As great as the former is, it’s the latter that’s one of the best animated shows you’ve never heard of, based on Kieth’s own exceptional comic book series. It’s about The Maxx, a superhero trying to protect his friend from an omniscient serial killer both in the real world and in a subconscious fantasy world.
Disguising a profound, admirably mature psychological drama about trauma behind a gritty superhero narrative, The Maxx is one of the most criminally underrated animated superhero shows in history. That psychological depth that makes it feel like a deep dive into the human subconscious comes with an air of surrealism that makes it a must-see for all those who love head-scratchingly bizarre shows.
8
‘Mr. Pickles’ (2014–2019)
There are some shows whose bonkers nature becomes abundantly clear from the moment one hears their premise, and the Adult Swim forgotten classic Mr. Pickles is definitely one such show. It’s one of the best body horror and slasher shows that animation has ever produced, about a family who lives with a deviant Border Collie with a secret Satanic streak.
Thankfully, Mr. Pickles lives up to the wildness of its premise at every turn of each of its four seasons. It was always the intention for the show to combine the charm and nostalgia of a ’50s family sitcom with some of the most subversive shock humor, gore, and surreal absurdity imaginable, and for people who love that kind of thing, Mr. Pickles should hit the spot easily.
7
‘Sym-Bionic Titan’ (2010–2011)
Even though it was created by Genndy Tartakovsky, one of the biggest names in the history of televisual animation, Sym-Bionic Titan has somehow still managed to slip under most animation fans’ radars as the years have passed since its cancellation. It’s one of those obscure animated shows that became cult classics, one that everyone who loves animation—regardless of whether they love Tartakovsky—should consider checking out. In it, three young aliens with the ability to form a giant robotic warrior try to blend into suburbia.
“Bonkers” is a word that would very fittingly describe a decent majority of Tartakovsky’s work across television and the big screen, but it applies to Sym-Bionic Titan with particular glee. Part mecha action extravaganza, part John Hughes-esque high school teen drama, it’s a genre-bending trip full of fast-paced animation and mature themes.
6
‘Frisky Dingo’ (2006–2008)
Those who love bonkers animation should already know that Adult Swim is typically the place to go when looking for one such show. But even by the network’s sky-high standards of hilarious absurdity, Frisky Dingo is particularly bizarre. Even the synopsis of this sci-fi farce is hard to explain, but in broad strokes, it’s all about a philandering billionaire playboy who moonlights as a superhero, as he faces his nemesis while balancing his business and his superhero life.
It’s one of the best animated series for adults, a gleeful deconstruction of the pre-MCU superhero genre that feels even timelier and more relevant today than it did back in the late 2000s. With its frantically paced, hilariously nonsensical plotlines, its absurd visuals, and its rapid-fire dialogue, it’s one of the most chaotic comedies that animation has ever produced for the small screen.
5
‘Turbo Teen’ (1984)
From the moment one hears Turbo Teen‘s mere synopsis, it becomes abundantly clear why it’s one of the most bonkers cartoons of the 20th century: It’s all about a teen who gets into an accident and then gains the ability to transform into a crime-fighting sports car when it’s hot. It’s a genuinely wild premise to make a show out of, so (perhaps needless to say) the show failed to capture an audience.
Even still, its brief 13 episodes are worth watching today if only to admire how anyone could have come up with an animated show so bonkers. It’s a Knight Rider rip-off that almost borders on qualifying as kid-friendly body horror, and as if that weren’t enough reason for an animation fan’s morbid curiosity to be piqued, there’s also the writing so nonsensical that it’s practically surreal.
4
‘Freakazoid!’ (1995–1997)
Executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, Freakazoid! is one of those forgotten cartoons that are still worth watching. It follows the adventures of Washington, D.C.’s brand-new defender, a geeky teenager who absorbs the entire cyberspace after a freak accident and gains superhuman cartoon powers. It’s the sort of premise that would feel right at home in even the wildest of Looney Tunes stories.
Clearly a response to the chaos and mayhem of the early rise of the Internet and the digital frontier during the mid-’90s, Freakazoid! is as surreal, absurd, manic, and eager to break the fourth wall as any fan of a character like Deadpool could possibly hope for an animated superhero show to be. Written like a stream of consciousness and full of meta humor, it’s the peak of what superhero comedies had to offer during the ’90s.
3
‘The Pirates of Dark Water’ (1991–1992)
Produced by Hanna-Barbera, The Pirates of Dark Water is a dark fantasy swashbuckling adventure like no other. In it, a young man learns that he’s a prince, one with an urgent quest to save his world by finding 13 magical treasures. What ensues is one of the best forgotten fantasy shows of the ’90s, a highly ambitious serialized story with some of the most groundbreaking animation of any ’90s cartoon.
It was also a genre-bending and incredibly bonkers show, though, an unprecedented mixture of high fantasy, swashbuckling pirates, cosmic horror, and science fiction. The world of Mer is wonderfully surreal and full of over-the-top world-building, inhabited by a delectably odd ensemble of characters who never fail to get into all sorts of entertaining situations.
2
‘Megas XLR’ (2004–2005)
The slacker genre, spanning both cinema and music, peaked around the mid- to late-’90s. Megas XLR is both an homage to and a parody of not just the slacker genre, but also the mecha genre. Its story follows two teenage slackers who find a mecha from the future that had been lying in a New Jersey junkyard for almost 60 years.
Megas XLR is one of those classic 2000s cartoons that is ready for a reboot, but for the moment, the original should be more than enough to satisfy fans of animated sci-fi and bonkers comedies. Also inspired by video games and heavy metal, Megas XLR feels like a delightful hotchpotch of styles, tones, and influences that always blend together in all the most enjoyably over-the-top ways.
1
‘Æon Flux‘ (1991–1995)
Premiering on MTV’s experimental animation showcase Liquid Television, Æon Flux instantly cemented its place as one of the greatest experimental animated shows of the ’90s. Today, those lucky few who have actually seen it still tend to regard it as one of the best of all time. This avant-garde masterpiece follows a secret agent from an anarchic society who repeatedly infiltrates a heavily surveilled neighboring state.
It’s one of those sci-fi shows that gets better every episode, though it also gets more bonkers every episode. Created by Peter Chung as a very intentional subversion of every established rule of 1990s American television, Æon Flux has aged like fine wine. Visually surreal, psychologically tense, and masterfully genre-bending, it may be disorienting at times, but it’s also an undeniable masterpiece.

Blake Lively Upset By Taylor Swift Wedding Snub Despite Hopes
Blake Lively is reportedly reeling after being left off the guest list for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce‘s highly publicized wedding celebration.
The actress, who once shared a close friendship with the pop superstar, had reportedly hoped their long history would be enough to secure an invitation despite recent tensions.
However, sources claim the omission has only widened the rift between Taylor Swift and Blake Lively, with insiders suggesting any chance of reconciliation is now fading as new details emerge about their relationship.

Blake Lively is reportedly struggling with feelings of disappointment after not making the guest list for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s highly publicized wedding celebration, according to new claims.
The actress and the pop superstar were once among Hollywood’s closest friends. Their bond appeared especially strong when Lively and her husband Ryan Reynolds named Swift godmother to their children. However, reports suggest their relationship has deteriorated significantly in recent years.
According to an insider who spoke to the Daily Mail, the snub has left Lively deeply upset. The source claimed she is “sad and a little bit p-ssed. No, a lot p-ssed,” adding, “That friendship was over before, but if there was hope, it’s gone. They’ll never be friends again.”
Sources claim Lively had hoped their long history would be enough to secure an invitation to the star-studded ceremony, but that expectation was not met.
An insider alleged that the snub has only deepened the rift between the former friends and diminished any possibility of reconciliation.
Who Got An Invite Over Blake Lively?

While Swift and Kelce celebrated with an extensive guest list that reportedly included actors, musicians, athletes and longtime friends, Lively was notably absent from the festivities.
Celebrities such as Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid, Bradley Cooper, Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Patrick Mahomes and many others were said to be in attendance.
Rather than joining the celebrations, Lively and Reynolds were spotted in Lake Placid, New York, supporting their daughter at a horse show.
The couple maintained a low profile, opting for casual attire that stood in stark contrast to the glamour surrounding the wedding festivities.
Blake Lively’s Absence From The Guest List Meant It Was ‘Personal’ For Taylor Swift

Observers have pointed to Lively’s absence as particularly striking given the scale of the celebration. With thousands of guests reportedly attending, some believe it would have been difficult to attribute the omission to space limitations alone.
“Madison Square Garden holds more than 20,000 people. If Blake isn’t there, nobody can blame a lack of space,” a source previously told the Daily Mail. “The guest list is so massive that Blake’s absence becomes impossible to ignore. People will notice immediately.”
The source continued: “Taylor could invite practically everyone she’s ever known. That’s why Blake not getting an invite would speak volumes. This isn’t about logistics or capacity. If Blake is left off the list, it’s personal.”
Source Shares New Details On Taylor Swift-Blake Lively Rift

New reports have since suggested that Swift’s decision was influenced by a desire to move forward and surround herself with people she fully trusts.
According to a Page Six insider, the singer is in a “different place now, and she just wants to be around people she trusts and who bring her peace.”
While the source acknowledged that Swift and Lively once shared a genuine friendship, they claimed the singer no longer believes the relationship can be repaired. “As far as [Taylor’s] concerned, their friendship is done,” the insider said.
The reported rift between Swift and Lively is believed to have intensified during the actress’s legal battle with Justin Baldoni. Swift briefly became entangled in the dispute after being subpoenaed, though the request was later withdrawn.
The controversy attracted significant attention, particularly after court filings revealed text messages in which Lively referred to Swift and Reynolds as “my dragons.”
Adding to the scrutiny, a source told the Daily Mail in January that some people within Swift’s circle viewed Lively’s message as inappropriate. The insider claimed the “I’m Khaleesi, and like her, I happen to have dragons” text was seen as an unnecessary attempt at intimidation and placed Swift in an uncomfortable position.
Taylor Swift Reportedly Reached A ‘Turning Point’ Before Leaving Blake Lively Off Wedding Guest List

According to recent reports, Swift initially believed she and Lively would eventually move past the tension surrounding the controversy. However, that optimism is said to have faded as additional issues emerged over time.
“It wasn’t one big thing, it was everything adding up,” a source explained. “By the time Taylor was making decisions about the wedding and who she wanted there, she realized she just didn’t want that kind of energy around something so important, and it really was a turning point for her.”
Since then, reports have suggested Swift has sought to distance herself from the drama, fueling speculation that her once-close friendship with Lively may have suffered irreparable damage.
The two women shared a friendship that spanned more than a decade, appearing together at major life events and publicly supporting each other’s careers. Swift even incorporated the names of Lively and Reynolds’ children into her music, a gesture that once highlighted the strength of their bond.

Celebrities Who Attended Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce Wedding
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding guest list was a who’s who of some of the most famous people in the world.
The singer and the NFL star, both 36, invited fellow A-listers to their Friday, July 3, ceremony at Madison Square Garden in New York City, with around 1,000 of her famous friends and his Kansas City Chiefs teammates, among others, making the cut.
Ahead of the nuptials, a source exclusively told Us Weekly in April, “It won’t be a huge wedding, but there will be many celebrities.”
According to a second insider, Swift and Kelce went “back and forth between inviting everyone and keeping it small and private.”
Additionally, given privacy concerns, the couple opted not to mail hard copy invitations to their guests.
“Their closest friends and family know the venue and the date,” the first source said, “even if nothing formal has been sent out.”
Shortly after getting engaged to Kelce in August 2025, Swift shared her reluctance to narrow down the guest list for the pair’s wedding.
“I know it’s gonna be fun to plan because I think the only stressful weddings are the ones where you have a small amount [of room] and people are on the bubble and you have to evaluate or assess your relationship with them to see if they should be there. I’m not gonna do that,” she revealed on The Graham Norton Show in October 2025 before joking, “I shouldn’t have said any of that.”

Taylor Swift Wedding Guests Hit By Close Pal’s X-Rated Speech
Taylor Swift‘s wedding to Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden delivered all the glitz, glamor, and star-studded spectacle expected of the global pop icon.
Now, new reports have emerged suggesting there was a shocking moment that stunned guests, all thanks to her close pal Lena Dunham.
The timeline of the wedding has remained under wraps as Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s guests were reportedly subjected to strict searches and were made to sign an NDA.

Madison Square Garden played host to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s multi-day nuptials into the 4th of July holiday, bringing together a star-studded list of Hollywood celebrities and sports stars.
There was so much hush-hush in the buildup to the main event, which was held Friday night at the famous venue. However, fans couldn’t miss it as the surrounding MSG vicinity was flooded with heavy police presence and workers making the location “super posh” to host the event.
The now-wedded couple also made guests sign an NDA, which explains why very little has emerged about how the Adam Sandler-officiated nuptials went down.
According to the BBC, stars seen entering the venue for the wedding include Selena Gomez, Camila Cabello, Hugh Grant, Gracie Abrams, Ellie Goulding, Graham Norton, and Dakota Johnson.
It appears they still tried to keep things modest, as reports claim Swift didn’t use any bridesmaids, but instead, she and Kelce tapped their brothers as best man and “man of honor.”

However, rumor mill suggests the ultra-exclusive nuptials almost descended into absolute chaos, thanks to a cringeworthy toast from Swift’s long-time friend Lena Dunham.
A “mole” told the Daily Mail that Thursday’s wedding reception was filled with “lots of speeches” as close friends and family took turns to extol the couple’s love story.
However, Dunham seemingly went off-script when it was her turn to speak by saying that “American football is just straight guys reenacting gay p-rn.”
According to the news outlet, the source noted that the “Girls” creator’s remark drew a “divided” response of “gasps and laughs” from guests, which included Kelce’s teammates and NFL colleagues.
Yet, the “Bad Blood” singer reportedly took it with a pinch of salt, declaring Dunham a “genius” after the speech.
An A-List Star Was Reportedly Denied Access To Taylor Swift’s Wedding

According to a second Daily Mail source, gossip spread during the event that a household-name celebrity desired to have made the guest list and quietly reached out for an invitation but was politely turned down.
The identity of the said celebrity was kept under wraps, but the news outlet claims that their name would set tongues wagging in many Hollywood circles.
The described situation mimics the current state of things between the “Blank Space” singer and her former best pal, Blake Lively.
Both stars had been friends for over a decade, but seemingly fell out after Swift was dragged into Lively’s nasty court battle with her former costar Justin Baldoni.
Blake Lively’s Fallout With The Singer After Private Texts Were Exposed

The situation soured further as Swift faced the prospect of being subjected to a deposition, before her text and email conversation with the “Gossip Girl” star was released.
In one bombshell text to Lively, Swift called Baldoni a “b-tch” with a “tiny violin,” and another in which she said Baldoni was not “strategic” in using her song “My Tears Ricochet With Us” in “It Ends With Us.”
“In April 26, 2024 messages, Lively and Swift discussed a plan to use Swift’s song in the film’s trailer,” the court documents stated, per Page Six. “Swift wrote: ‘If Justin was strategic, he would be like no Taylor Swift in the trailer because that gives you more power over the film, that’s your ally not his.’”
“Lively responded: ‘You are so right…He should’ve run from your music…How stupid. This was his only shot at having the appearance of an upper hand,’” the docs continued.
Fans Heap Praise On Taylor Swift And Travis Kelce

Meanwhile, social media is filled with Swifties praising them for sticking to each other over the years.
In a nod to Swift’s penchant for creating hit songs from her past relationship, an X user wrote, “If anybody is waiting for a divorced album, go f-ck yourself. They are married for eternity.”
Another fan said, “My heart is melting; she truly got her love story, and it makes the rest of us believe a little more.”
“From friendship bracelets to wedding rings, Taylor and Travis have written their own timeless love story,” a third user penned, while another person said, “Congratulations to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce. Half the internet is celebrating… the other half is already predicting how long it’ll last.”

Forget ‘Fallout,’ Walton Goggins’ 6-Part Western Masterpiece Is a Monster Hit on Streaming
The last few years have been nothing short of stellar for the great Timothy Olyphant, who has settled into a key role in Ridley Scott’s latest sci-fi series, Alien: Earth. After starring in the first season as Kirsh, it has been confirmed that Olyphant will return and star in Season 2, which is now shooting and eyeing a 2027 return. Olyphant has also become a Star Wars sensation thanks to his role as Cobb Vanth in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, and while fans are ready to see him show up again, there don’t appear to be any plans for him to come back in the immediate future. Outside just the last few years, though, Olyphant has been starring in popular Western movies and TV shows, and one of his most famous pieces of work is staging an unexpected comeback.
When it comes to nailing down Olyphant’s most famous role, it would be hard to name more than a few without listing Raylan Givens, who he played in multiple seasons of the legendary Western series, Justified. The show was written and created for TV by Graham Yost, who is also the lead writer on Apple TV’s sci-fi sensation starring Rebecca Ferguson, Silo. Justified, which also stars now mega-star Walton Goggins (Fallout), ran for six seasons between 2010 and 2015 — an impressive turnaround that’s almost unheard of nowadays — and the show has since found a streaming home on Hulu as an FX-produced series. Over 10 years after Justified went off the air, the show is experiencing a surprise comeback on VOD, where it’s become one of the most popular purchases in a few countries.
What Is the ‘Justified’ Spin-Off Show About?
Back in 2023, seven years after Justified went off the air, Timothy Olyphant returned as Raylan Givens in a new spin-off series, Justified: City Primeval, which consists of only eight episodes. Despite Olyphant returning to the lead role, fans weren’t too hot on the Justified offshoot, as most felt it abandoned the principals of what made the original series so popular in the first place. An official synopsis for the show reads as follows:
“Raylan Givens trades Kentucky hollows for Detroit’s gritty streets, drawn into a deadly clash with Clement Mansell, a slick, sociopathic killer known as the Oklahoma Wildman. As Raylan navigates a corrupt city and unravels a murder case, he must outsmart a cunning judge-killer while protecting his teenage daughter, blurring the line between justice and vengeance in this tense, high-stakes crime saga.”
Check out all six seasons of Justified on Hulu, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins’ future projects.

Brad Pitt’s Apple TV Action Hit Is Quietly Crushing the Competition on Streaming
Brad Pitt is certainly no stranger to success on the Apple TV charts, with the Hollywood icon now one of the flagship faces of Apple’s movie division. This is mostly thanks to the enormous success of Joseph Kosinski‘s racing blockbuster F1, which starred Pitt as Sonny Hayes. One of the highlights of 2025’s summer of cinema, F1 was a huge success both commercially and critically, even becoming the highest-grossing original movie of the year and Apple Original Film’s highest-grossing theatrical release of all time, scoring $633 million worldwide against a budget reported to range between $200 million and $300 million.
Not just a smash hit in theaters, F1 also earned Oscars glory, taking home the prize for Best Sound from this year’s 98th Academy Awards ceremony, and even earning a nod in the coveted Best Picture category. For all its dominance, especially having just surpassed the 200-day mark on the streamer’s top ten in America, you’d be forgiven for thinking this was Pitt’s only Apple TV movie. However, in 2024, Pitt teamed up with his Ocean’s castmate George Clooney to deliver the arguably underrated action comedy Wolfs to the streamer.
When two rival fixers (Clooney and Pitt) cross paths on a particularly tricky and high-profile crime, they must put their preference to work alone to the side as they begin a night of chaos and danger. After release in September 2024, and despite lukewarm reviews from critics, Wolfs quickly became Apple TV’s most-watched movie. However, it was originally planned to receive a theatrical run first, with the pivot to a streaming-only release encouraging director Jon Watts to walk away from a previously confirmed sequel.
‘Wolfs’ Is Back Among the Streaming Elite
Almost two years since it was first released, Wolfs is back among the streaming elite. At the time of writing, the movie is one of the ten most-streamed on Apple TV in the U.S. The current ten is also topped by Pitt as Sonny Hayes in F1, with the rest of the list also boasting some eye-catching projects. This includes Sydney Sweeney‘s underrated thriller Echo Valley, Keanu Reeves‘ Outcome, the World War II action film Greyhound, Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller‘s The Gorge, director Guy Ritchie‘s Fountain of Youth, and more.
Wolfs is streaming now on Apple TV. Stay tuned to Collider for the latest updates.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce called on a very special friend to officiate their wedding: Adam Sandler.
Swift’s rep confirms to Us Weekly that the comedian, 59, presided over the newlyweds’ big day at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Friday, July 3.
Swift and Kelce, both 36, opted not to have bridesmaids or groomsmen at the black-tie ceremony. Instead, the bride’s brother, Austin Swift, served as her man of honor, while the groom’s brother, Jason Kelce, was his best man.
Sandler’s daughters, Sadie, 20, and Sunny, 17, have been fans of Taylor since they were children.
“Taylor in our house, every tune, they knew every word,” the actor shared on Travis and Jason’s podcast, “New Heights,” in August 2024. “I loved listening to her in the car. I love what she had to say, every message, every melody, just the production, how cool she was, what she meant to young girls, what she means to women, what she means to guys doing the right thing in life.”
Adam noted that Sadie and Sunny, whom he shares with his wife, Jackie Sandler, have had the opportunity to meet Taylor several times, including at the Los Angeles premiere of her Eras Tour concert film in October 2023.
“She means so much to my f***ing house,” the Big Daddy star added.
Adam has also become close with Travis since the Kansas City Chiefs tight end made a cameo in his 2025 movie Happy Gilmore 2.
“Travis is such a gentle, nice guy and funny as hell,” the Saturday Night Live alum told Entertainment Tonight in July 2025. “He’s like the guys I grew up with. When I was with Travis, it reminded me of my buddies in high school and just being able to laugh and say the things you want to say.”
Taylor and Travis started dating in the summer of 2023 and got engaged in August 2025.
Prior to their wedding, multiple sources confirmed to Us that the couple planned to say “I do” at Madison Square Garden. Approximately 1,000 people attended Friday’s ceremony, including Gigi Hadid, Bradley Cooper, Zoë Kravitz, Karlie Kloss, Jack Antonoff, Ed Sheeran and Benson Boone.
Taylor and Travis both wore Christian Dior Haute Couture looks designed by creative director Jonathan Anderson. Christian Louboutin customized their shoes, and the “Love Story” singer donned Cartier jewelry.
The night before their nuptials, Taylor and Travis hosted a star-studded rehearsal dinner at the Infosys Theater, which is located inside MSG.

The Harlan Coben Formula That Turned Netflix Into a Thriller Machine
If it’s starting to feel like everyone’s obsessed with a brand-new Harlan Coben thriller every few months, it’s because they actually are. Since teaming up with Netflix in 2018, 13 of the prolific author’s 35 bestselling books have been adapted into limited-run series, and the partnership is quickly becoming one of the platform’s biggest success stories. In just the last six months, Run Away unseated Stranger Things to top the global charts, and I Will Find You became the biggest original series debut of 2026.
Coben, who serves as executive producer on all his adaptations, has long been a force in mystery-thriller fiction; now, his name is synonymous with addictive, bingeworthy TV. The Netflix shows are easy to pick up because, like the books they’re based on, they have self-contained plots that remove lore-based barrier to entry and make them universally accessible to global audiences. What keeps viewers hooked, though, is his unique ability to deliver high-stakes twists and breakneck pacing within a narrative that’s emotionally grounded and relatable at its core – and that’s due to a storytelling formula Coben has spent years perfecting.
The Harlan Coben Thriller Formula
Each of the adapted novels is built around a “what if?” premise, a scenario or revelation so outrageous it borders on impossible. That premise is then dropped into the life of a deeply ordinary protagonist, often living in Coben’s home state of New Jersey or nearby metro areas, who has a normal job, family, and obligations – and it completely shatters their sense of reality. Because the “what if?” is so farfetched, the protagonist struggles to get others to believe what they’ve discovered, forcing them to take matters into their own hands to uncover the truth.
Coben uses this formula to build out plots that hit all the right notes for a standard-fare mystery-thriller, yet remain entrenched in something much more accessible than shadowy espionage or hard-boiled crime. By using an everyman as the central protagonist, and basing everything on what real people know, feel, and do, he’s able to root each narrative organically in the human experience. “It’s not enough for me to stir your pulse, or stir your brain,” Coben said in an interview recently, “I need to stir your heart.” His work resonates with audiences so strongly because it’s exactly what we would do if we were in that “what if?” situation, which grounds even the wildest plot twist in emotional truth.
Every Great Mystery-Thriller Plot Starts With “What If?”
The “what if?” is the most important part of the formula, and it often starts as a loose idea that crystallizes as he continues to go about his everyday life, thinking, listening, and observing. After Coben found drug paraphernalia in his daughter’s room, he began thinking about centering his next novel on a young woman who’s lost her way. While mulling it over in Central Park, he saw a musician playing John Lennon on a guitar, and he was hit with the “what if?” behind the smash-hit Run Away: what if you’re half-listening to a busker playing in a park, and you look up and realize it’s your drug-addicted daughter who’s been missing for six months?
Lived experiences and conversations become a springboard, like for Hold Tight, which came out of a dinner conversation with friends about their troubled teen, a decision to install spyware, and a debate about parental responsibilities in an uncertain world. The Stranger, on the other hand, was inspired by browsing history, in both senses of the phrase; he dug into all sorts of websites to mine real stories for inspiration, and doubled down on his personal belief that our searches aren’t private. Each of the “what ifs?” takes real life, flips it on its head, then goes back down to earth on a crash course with reality in Corben’s stories, and that’s why it’s so eminently easy to be drawn in.
‘Fool Me Once’ is a Masterclass in the Coben Formula
In 2024, Fool Me Once became one of the most-watched series in Netflix history, and it’s when people started really understanding the allure of the Coben binge. It’s a masterclass in his formula; not only does it pull on every heartstring and tick every box of the relatability checklist, it’s also one of the twistiest, shock-inducing, gasp-worthy plots of all time. There’s also one hell of a “what if?”: what if your recently murdered husband suddenly appeared on your nanny cam?
The story centers on Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan), a retired military pilot and newly single mother whose husband, Joe Burkett (Richard Armitage), was murdered during an attempted robbery, only months after her sister, Claire Walker (Natalie Anderson), was murdered in a crime that remains unsolved. Maya is attempting to deal with these dual traumas and move on with her life when she’s given a nanny cam by a friend, and discovers what looks like her dead husband playing with her two-year-old daughter. Maya confronts her nanny, who flees with the camera’s memory card, leaving her without the only evidence she had to prove she saw her husband alive.
Desperate for answers, she begins investigating her husband’s wealthy, powerful family, and discovers the gun used in the robbery was the same one that killed her sister. Convinced the murders are linked, she takes a headlong dive into the world of the Burkett family and their company, uncovering the dark secrets they’ve tried to hide. And what she finds – well, that’s a bit less about the Coben formula, and more about Coben magic, but if you’ve watched it you’ll know what I mean when I say she finds what she knew all along.
‘I Will Find You’ Brings Coben’s Formula Home
The first 12 Netflix series were produced for countries outside the US, so the adaptations not only had to be moved from page to screen, but also adjusted for cultural relevancy and impact in new cities. With I Will Find You, production moved stateside; setting the action in the novel’s original locations, Boston and New York. While significant changes were made to certain characters, the pacing, and the structure of the plot’s twists and turns, the series gives us our first glimpse at Coben’s America, and it’s almost impossible to look away.
The “what if?” is, as always, astounding: what if your son, who you were convicted of murdering, was spotted in a photograph alive and well? David Borroughs (Sam Worthington) still maintains his innocence while serving life in prison when he’s shown the photo by his ex-wife’s sister, Rachel Mills (Britt Lower). As he becomes even more adamant that he isn’t guilty of the crime, multiple attempts on David’s life take place in the prison to stop him from investigating the circumstances around his son’s death. He’s forced to break out of prison and pursue the answers as a fugitive, convincing his friends and family one at a time that he’s not a madman but a father who knows his son is still alive.
It’s a crazy set of circumstances on the face of things, but as the series progresses, you begin to realize what he’s doing is exactly what you’d do, even though it’s absolutely insane. That’s how relatable Coben’s characters are, and it’s somehow even more true when the tiny details – something as small as swapping a Yankees hat for a Red Sox one when returning to Boston from New York, to make sure you’re not standing out – make the plot on the screen feel so much more real. And while not everything is perfect about the adaptation, it’s wildly watchable from beginning to end.
The Coben formula is, at its core, a stroke of storytelling genius, one that enables a thriller to maintain both a real-life and out-of-body feel. From the “what ifs?” to the well-grounded emotional foundation he builds, every single aspect of the narrative is built in a way that’s ready-made to binge. And the good news for everyone with a Netflix account is this isn’t the end of the line for the ever-growing Coben universe – as we’ve learned by now, there are always more series on the way.

Adam Sandler’s Shocking Role In Taylor Swift’s Wedding
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce celebrated their union surrounded by family, friends, and a host of familiar faces. While the star-studded guest list drew plenty of attention, it was one celebrity’s role in the ceremony that became an unexpected highlight. Adam Sandler wasn’t just present to celebrate the couple’s big day; he played a meaningful part in the festivities by officiating their wedding.
On the evening of Friday, July 3, Taylor Swift’s longtime publicist, Tree Paine, confirmed in a statement that the award-winning singer and the three-time Super Bowl champion were married.
Paine also included other details, including the couple’s looks (created by Christian Dior Haute Couture), and the important people who stood by their side during the special day. Swift and Kelce opted to forgo a traditional wedding party. Instead of bridesmaids and groomsmen, Swift chose her brother, Austin, as her man of honor, while Kelce named his brother, Jason, as his best man.
“The ceremony joined both families together and was officiated by friend Adam Sandler,” the statement read.
Following the ceremony, jumbotrons outside Madison Square Garden flashed an announcement: “JUST&T MARRIED!”

On July 2, a casually dressed Sandler was spotted arriving at MSG for Swift and Kelce’s rehearsal dinner. The comedian donned a blue floral shirt paired with green basketball shorts while carrying garment bags. He was accompanied by his wife, Jackie, and their daughter, Sadie.
Several hours before the wedding, Sandler was spotted in New York City sporting his signature Sandlercore outfit of basketball shorts and a yellow shirt as he headed to a basketball court to shoot some hoops before stepping into his officiant duties.
As reported by PEOPLE, the comedian later emerged from the courts and stopped for a quick coffee run before preparing for the wedding.
Sandler’s role as the couple’s officiant came as a surprise to fans, but it was one many welcomed as a charming and fitting addition to the celebration.
Travis Kelce Is An Adam Sandler Fan
In 2025, Kelce made a cameo appearance as a waiter in Sandler’s “Happy Gilmore 2,” the long-awaited sequel to the 1996 comedy hit.
In an interview on “The Pat McAfee Show,” the football player gushed about working with Sandler, which he described as a “dream come true.” Kelce was all praise for the “SNL” alum, saying he was as “cool” off screen was he was on-screen. “Working with Happy Gilmore himself, the Sandman, and Happy Productions, it was off the chain,” he added.
Sandler, too, only had nice things to say about the athlete. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, he said, “Travis is such a gentle, nice guy, and funny as hell.” The comedian added that working with Kelce reminded him of his high school friends, saying he felt free to laugh and be himself around the NFL star. “He certainly is a stud,” he added.
Adam Sandler’s Family Are Swifties

Sandler also has a good relationship with Swift, as he shared in a 2024 episode on the Kelce brothers’ podcast, “New Heights.” The comedian revealed that he, his wife, and their two daughters have been fans of Swift for years.
“Taylor in our house, every tune, they knew every word,” he said, referring to her daughters. “I loved listening to her in the car. I love what she had to say, every message, every melody, just the production, how cool she was, what she meant to young girls, what she means to women,” Sandler said.
In 2024, Sandler and his children met Swift at “The Eras Tour” movie premiere, where he said the pop star took the time to talk to his daughters. “She just floors my family. Floors them,” he exclaimed.
The comedian also revealed that Swift made him nervous, as he didn’t want to say “something stupid” and embarrass his daughters. “She means so much to my f-cking house… She’s lifetime, forever, along with the whole world. She just means so much,” he gushed.

Where Did Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Get Married? Details
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding venue has finally been revealed after months of speculation.
The Grammy winner and the Super Bowl champion, both 36, exchanged vows at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Friday, July 3, 2026.
What to Know About Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Wedding Venue

The location of Swift and Kelce’s nuptials has been hotly debated since the couple announced their engagement in August 2025. A source told Us Weekly in April that the festivities would likely be divided between the bride’s Rhode Island mansion and the nearby Ocean House seaside resort.
“The guest list grew, so the ceremony and private gatherings associated with the wedding [will be split between the venues],” the insider said at the time, noting that Swift still had other places in mind. “Taylor always has a plan B and C for every scenario.”
According to a second source, Swift and Kelce felt “confident” hosting their wedding in Rhode Island because “the entire area [would] be very private and guarded.”
Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse subsequently cast doubt on theories that the pair planned to wed in the state.
“I don’t know about that,” he told TMZ DC in June when asked about speculation that Swift’s Rhode Island mansion would serve as the setting for the event.
“I think that she gave Rhode Island a pass,” Whitehouse claimed. “But I’d hope so, I’d love to have her in Rhode Island.”
As Swift and Kelce’s big day drew nearer, rumors surfaced that the two might be considering New York City for their nuptials.
Amid the conflicting speculation, Swift and Kelce’s inner circle remained tight-lipped about the wedding. Per the second source, the duo weren’t “even sure” they would mail hard copy invitations to their guests given the level of secrecy surrounding the nuptials. However, “their closest friends and family know the venue and the date,” the insider explained at the time, “even if nothing formal has been sent out.”
In the midst of wedding planning, Swift and Kelce approached the process like a team sport.
“They’re both involved and making decisions together,” the source told Us in April, adding that the couple had been “focused on actually enjoying the process rather than getting caught up in the pressure” as the ceremony grew closer. “They’re keeping things light.”

Swift and Kelce were both “very laid back” while sorting out the specifics of their big day, with the insider noting they “made a conscious decision not to let it cause any tension between them.”
As for Kelce’s willingness to be involved in the planning, the source revealed, “Taylor thinks it’s cute that Travis cares about a lot of the details.”
Swift previously confessed that she never dreamed about her perfect nuptials prior to finding love with Kelce. During an October 2025 appearance on the U.K.’s Heart radio station, she shared, “You would think that I had been the type of person who would have obsessed over the idea of a wedding my whole life, but I actually never thought about what I would ever do or what I would want until I met the person.”
