10 Movies From 1989 That Are Now Considered Classics
1989 was a year where mainstream success and artistic ambition overlapped in unusually productive ways. Idiosyncratic voices made their debuts, some genre films carried personal or political weight, and an adult indie drama punched well above its weight, heralding the independent cinema boom that would follow in the 1990s.
Some of the year’s classics were divisive, some were underestimated, and some were simply enjoyed without anyone realizing how deeply they would burrow into the culture. With time, however, their influence has clarified. Without further ado, here are the most enduring bangers from 1989.
10
‘Do the Right Thing’ (1989)
“Always do the right thing.” Do the Right Thing unfolds over a single sweltering summer day in a Brooklyn neighborhood, following residents whose simmering tensions finally erupt into violence. At the center of it all is a pizza delivery man (Spike Lee) navigating conflicts between local Black residents and the Italian-American owners of a pizzeria, but the film quickly expands into a mosaic of clashing perspectives. The vibrant colors, confrontational dialogue, and shifting tones make the heat feel psychological as well as physical.
The whole thing crackles with propulsive narrative energy. The themes and commentary were also sharper and more honest than most movies from the late ’80s (the contrast between this and Driving Miss Daisy, released the same year, is especially striking). Over time, Do the Right Thing‘s relevance has only intensified, as debates about protest, property, and systemic racism remain unresolved. All in all, probably Lee’s greatest joint.
9
‘Field of Dreams’ (1989)
“If you build it, he will come.” It’s a little schmaltzy, but Field of Dreams has become iconic (and frequently parodied) for a reason. Kevin Costner leads the cast as Ray Kinsella, an Iowa farmer who hears a mysterious voice urging him to build a baseball field in his cornfields. What follows is a gentle, increasingly surreal journey involving ghostly ballplayers, lost dreams, and unresolved family wounds. Basically, the movie is a kind of sentimental fantasy, but with enough heart to make up for the occasional cheesiness.
This sincerity is its greatest strength. In an era often allergic to earnestness, the film’s willingness to embrace longing without irony feels increasingly rare. Fundamentally, Field of Dreams is less about baseball than about regret, legacy, and reconciliation, particularly between fathers and sons. It understands nostalgia not as escapism, but as a reckoning with what was left unsaid. In this sense, Field of Dreams feels more like a fairytale movie from the ’50s than your typical ’80s blockbuster.
8
‘Crimes and Misdemeanors’ (1989)
“If it turns out there is a God, I don’t think he’s evil.” Crimes and Misdemeanors weaves together two parallel stories: one involving a respected ophthalmologist (Martin Landau) who commits murder to preserve his comfortable life, and another following a struggling filmmaker (Woody Allen) grappling with failure and romantic disappointment. This premise becomes the basis for an existential comedy-drama. Through it, the film asks a blunt but pressing philosophical question: what happens if immoral actions go unpunished?
The humor is dry, the tone deceptively casual, but the implications are devastating. Crimes and Misdemeanors remains a classic not just because it’s sharply funny, but because it refuses consolation, daring audiences to confront the possibility that meaning and morality are not enforced by the world, but constructed (or, indeed, abandoned) by individuals. The characters are backed into complex situations and behave as real people might. The script is great, filled to the brim with food for thought.
7
‘Sex, Lies, and Videotape’ (1989)
“I don’t have sex with people I know.” Sex, Lies and Videotape is one of the most assured debuts of all time, rightly earning Steven Soderbergh the Palme d’Or (he was just 26 at the time). The plot follows a group of interconnected people whose emotional lives are shaped by repression, dishonesty, and voyeurism. James Spader is in top form as Graham Dalton, a man who records women talking candidly about their sexual experiences, disrupting the carefully maintained facades around him. He’s like a trickster figure, sowing chaos.
The movie was made on a budget of $1.2m, leaning into intelligent writing and layered performances rather than spectacle or visual panache. The dialogue provides almost all the tension. Here, Soderbergh treats conversation as action, allowing confession to carry the dramatic weight. He also demonstrates an understanding of psychology that was way beyond his years. Over time, Sex, Lies, and Videotape has become a landmark not just because it helped ignite the American independent film movement, but because of how acutely it understands emotional avoidance.
6
‘When Harry Met Sally…’ (1989)
“I’ll have what she’s having.” Rob Reiner was on fire in the late ’80s and early ’90s, delivering a remarkable string of masterpieces. One of the most purely enjoyable of them is When Harry Met Sally…, one of the definitive rom-coms of its era. It traces the evolving relationship between two people (Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan) who repeatedly cross paths over more than a decade, debating whether men and women can ever truly be just friends.
The plot is episodic, built around conversations rather than events, allowing time itself to become the film’s central force. The dialogue feels casual but precise, capturing how people use humor and cynicism to protect themselves from vulnerability. Here, love isn’t something easy and written in the stars. It’s something negotiated through timing, maturity, and fear. It’s impressive that When Harry Met Sally… manages to be honest and feel-good at the same time.
5
‘Dead Poets Society’ (1989)
“Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys.” Another feel-good, life-affirming gem. Dead Poets Society is set at a conservative boarding school, where an unconventional teacher (Robin Williams in one of his earliest and strongest dramatic roles) encourages his students to embrace poetry, individuality, and self-expression. The movie follows the transformative impact of this philosophy, as well as the tragic consequences of institutional resistance.
Alongside the legendary performance from Williams, there’s also great work here from Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard, both barely 20 at the time. The movie’s classic status rests on its ability to articulate a universal adolescent awakening, the moment when the world reveals both its beauty and its cruelty. Again, it’s the kind of movie that some viewers might find a little too sentimental and romanticized, but that’s very much the point. Also, if some plot points seem obvious now, that’s only because so many movies since have copied Dead Poets Society‘s template.
4
‘Batman’ (1989)
“Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?” Although not flawless, Tim Burton‘s Batman has earned its place in superhero history. Crucially, it reintroduced the superhero as a figure of darkness and psychological obsession rather than campy adventure, paving the way for so much that would follow. The plot focuses on Batman’s (Michael Keaton) conflict with the Joker (Jack Nicholson), but the film is less interested in heroics than in atmosphere and identity.
The city itself feels diseased, theatrical, and oppressive, reflecting the fractured psyches of its inhabitants. This approach proved that comic-book movies could be stylized, moody, and adult-oriented without sacrificing mass appeal. Without it, there is no Batman Begins. Its influence on modern franchise cinema is undeniable, but few later films matched its singular vision. Keaton is solid, Nicholson is fantastic, and the production design is some of the best of any Batman movie.
3
‘Back to the Future Part II’ (1989)
“Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads. Back to the Future Part II expands the original film’s time-travel concept into a dizzying exploration of alternate timelines and unintended consequences. It sends its characters into a speculative future, then spirals backward into altered pasts where small changes create disastrous outcomes. Refreshingly, rather than repeating the first movie, Part II complicates its ideas, turning nostalgia into a puzzle rather than a comfort. It’s an impressive example of a franchise avoiding the sophomore slump.
The screwball humor and general wackiness are back, anchored by winning performances from Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. However, there are also some interesting, darker undercurrents this time around. For instance, the future the movie imagines is garish and alienating, while the altered present is grotesque and corrupt. Here, time travel isn’t wish fulfillment but a warning about how easily good intentions unravel when control is mistaken for wisdom.
2
‘The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover’ (1989)
“I want you to eat it.” The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover is a lavish, confrontational allegory set almost entirely inside a restaurant run by a vulgar, tyrannical gangster (Michael Gambon). The main character is his abused wife (Helen Mirren), who begins an affair with a gentle intellectual (Alan Howard), using food, space, and secrecy as acts of resistance. The movie is unapologetically theatrical throughout. Director Peter Greenaway uses color, music, and movement to transform power dynamics into visual language.
On release, the film’s violence and nudity were somewhat controversial, but it has been recognized less as shock cinema and more as political satire, an indictment of excess, cruelty, and moral decay. Its classic status rests on its confidence. The film never seeks realism or subtlety; it seeks truth through exaggeration. Themes aside, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover is simply worth watching to see Gambon, most famous for playing the benevolent Dumbledore, in the role of a boorish brute.
1
‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’ (1989)
“It’s not the years, honey. It’s the mileage.” The third Indiana Jones movie follows the whip-wielding archaeologist (Harrison Ford) as he searches for his missing father (Sean Connery) and the Holy Grail, serving up a typically phenomenal blend of adventure, humor, and myth. The plot returns the series to a lighter tone after its darker predecessor, emphasizing family dynamics alongside globe-trotting action. Beneath the chases and puzzles lies a story about reconciliation between a distant father and son. Ford and Connery make their relationship totally believable (despite Connery only being 12 years older than Ford).
While the action remains inventive, it’s the character moments that linger. For many, this balance of spectacle and warmth makes The Last Crusade their favorite entry in the series. The compelling characters make the suspenseful set-pieces all the more intense. All in all, this remains one of the most entertaining movies not just of 1989 but of the entire 1980s.

Whitney Port’s Fertility Journey Quotes After Pregnancy Losses
Whitney Port’s journey to expand her family with husband Tim Rosenman has faced its fair share of setbacks.
Port and Rosenman, who wed in November 2015, welcomed son Sonny in July 2017. Following Sonny’s arrival, the Hills alum suffered multiple pregnancy losses.
“It’s been seven years of trying since Sonny. I got pregnant about a year after he was born, and then it was miscarriage after miscarriage after miscarriage. I was getting pregnant but the pregnancies weren’t sticking,” she said in a January 2026 interview with Spread the Jelly. “Eventually, I was told my chances would be better with a fertility doctor. I went to one who came highly recommended and started the process of egg retrieval, freezing embryos, and IVF.”
While struggling with secondary infertility, Port and Rosenman looked into surrogacy as an option. After finding a match and completing two transfers, the surrogate suffered a miscarriage.
“We decided to go down the surrogacy road at the end of last year after a really long journey of not being able to conceive on our own and just having so many things go wrong,” Port said on the April 2025 episode of her “With Whit” podcast. “We found an amazing surrogate, and we ended up doing two transfers with the surrogate. Both transfers ended up miscarrying.”
While Port’s journey to expand her and Rosenman’s family hasn’t gone as planned, she has been candid about her journey and remains hopeful to give Sonny a sibling.

Whitney Port Recalls Feeling ‘Incomplete’ Amid Fertility Struggles
During a January 2026 interview with Spread the Jelly, Whitney Port opened up about how she never expected her motherhood journey to turn out the way it did.
“I don’t think motherhood looks like what I imagined. I never thought I’d be a mom to an only child. I always knew I wanted more than one,” she told the outlet. “I didn’t picture this, and that’s been a little weird for me. My identity as a mom doesn’t feel fully solidified yet because I feel incomplete. I really do.”
Port added that while she’s grateful to have Sonny, the struggle to conceive a second child has made her feel insecure.
“This sounds awful, but there’s this feeling like one isn’t enough — or that it’s not as hard, or not as much to balance, or not the full picture,” she continued. “And I carry that insecurity. I’ve done a lot of work around it. Most of the time, I’m able to tell myself, ‘OK, if it’s just the three of us, that is wonderful.’”
Whitney Port Didn’t Feel Like She Deserved to Use a Surrogate
While struggling to conceive a second child, Whitney Port confessed she felt unworthy to use a surrogate.
“I felt like I hadn’t done everything yet, so I didn’t deserve that option. I rejected the idea for a while,” she told Spread the Jelly. “Then I started talking to people who had used surrogates and had similar experiences. I decided to take my power back and see it as a privilege; I don’t need to keep putting my body through this after six years of trying. I was 41 and I was losing myself.”
Whitney Port’s Candid Update on the Egg Retrieval Process
Whitney Port gave an update on how she was faring ahead of an egg retrieval.
“It’s not the physical discomfort (which totally sucks- bloating, bruising, swelling, heaviness) but the emotional discomfort. The hormones are making me feel like I can’t manage anything, like everything is just the worst,” Port wrote via Instagram in August 2024. “And I’m nervous that I’m not going to get out any quality eggs and what will this all be for. I’m scared. My energy is non existent and I feel like I’m not showing up the way I should as a wife, mom, sister, friend, coworker, etc.”
While the former reality star struggled with her emotions, she expressed her gratitude for the support she’s received amid her fertility struggles.
“I’ll be ready to return to gratitude soon, but I am just not there yet with so much up in the air. That may be pessimistic, but I don’t want to force any feelings either. I can’t thank you all enough for your support and words of encouragement,” she concluded.
Why Whitney Port Spoke Up About Her Fertility Journey
In an October 2023 Us Weekly cover story, Whitney Port explained the reason why she started sharing her struggles online.
“It wasn’t [hard to discuss] at first, and then the more I put it out there, it was. Not because I was getting any negative response but it became something that I had to talk about and be reminded of all the time,” she exclusively told Us at the time. “It was already taking over my life, and then it was taking over my professional life. As a digital creator, you’re in this world of showing your personal life as part of your business. So I felt like that was becoming the conversation, and it was all-encompassing.”

Dr. Peter Attia Apologizes After Epstein Files, Family ICU Scandal
Dr. Peter Attia issued a lengthy apology after newly-released files connected to the case against convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein claimed he chose to stay in New York City for a meeting with the sex trafficker while his wife and child were in the ICU.
“I apologize and regret putting myself in a position where emails, some of them embarrassing, tasteless, and indefensible, are now public, and that is on me,” Attia, 52, wrote in a Monday, February 2, statement shared via X after allegedly sending the same message to his team and patients. “I accept that reality and the humiliation that comes with it.”
Attia, a so-called longevity researcher, came under fire on Friday, January 30, after new emails allegedly sent between the late Epstein and influencers, including Attia, were released by the Department of Justice. (Epstein died by suicide in 2019 at the age of 66 while in jail awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.)
In one email dated July 12, 2017, Attia and Epstein allegedly engaged in a back and forth exchange to solidify plans to meet up the following morning.
“Can you do before 10am? Tomorrow,” the email allegedly sent from Epstein read. Attia allegedly responded, “Sure. I can come earlier, also, if you have a hard stop at 10. Let me know.”
While the exchange might not seem significant to most, Attia previously confessed to leaving his wife, Jill, and infant son to handle a health scare without him during that same timeframe.
“Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at 5:45 p.m., to be exact — I had received a call from Jill, my wife,” Attia wrote in his book, Outlive: The Science and Art of Longevity, published in 2022.
The physician recalled in his book that his wife called him from the back of an ambulance because their son had “suddenly stopped breathing” and had no heartbeat. The child was resuscitated through CPR by a nurse, but wasn’t out of the woods.

“When Jill called me from the ambulance, I was in New York, in a taxi on Fifty-Fourth Street, on my way to dinner,” Peter wrote. “After she finished telling me the story, I just said, without a shred of emotion, ‘OK, call me when you get to the hospital, so I can talk to the doctors in the ICU.’”
Eagle-eyed fans noticed that Jill called her husband one day before he allegedly emailed Epstein while in New York to cement their meeting.
According to Attia’s book, he remained in New York “busy with my ‘important’ work” for 10 days after his son suffered cardiac arrest — and for the four days his wife and child were in the ICU in California.
While Attia didn’t directly address the alleged connection between his 2017 trip to New York and leaving his wife and son alone, he did deny that he is an individual who “participated in criminal activity, enabled it, or witnessed it,” which Peter said is the “purpose” of the DOJ releasing the Epstein documents.
“I am not in any of those categories, and there is no evidence to the contrary,” he claimed in his Monday statement. “To be clear: 1. I was not involved in any criminal activity. 2. My interactions with Epstein had nothing to do with his sexual abuse or exploitation of anyone. 3. I was never on his plane, never on his island, and never present at any sex parties.”
In addition to seemingly abandoning his family to buddy up to Epstein in 2017, Attia’s name was mentioned more than 1,700 times in the latest set of released files.
Attia attempted to explain his connection to Epstein in his statement, noting that they met in 2014 through a “prominent female healthcare leader while I was raising funds for scientific research.”
Attia explained that between summer 2014 and spring 2019 he met with Epstein “on approximately seven or eight occasions at his New York City home, regarding research studies and to meet others he introduced me to.”
He claimed he “never visited” Epstein’s ranch or island and “never” flew on any of his planes.
“I was not his doctor, though several times I answered general medical questions and recommended other providers to him,” Attia alleged.
He then cleared up one email exchange between him and Epstein that was reportedly sent in 2015 — and didn’t paint Attia in the best light.
“In June 2015, I sent Epstein an email with the subject line ‘Got a fresh shipment,’” Attia recalled. “The email contained a photograph of bottles of metformin, a medication I had just received from the pharmacy for my own use. The subject line referred to the picture of the bottles of medication.”

Epstein allegedly responded with the words “me too” and sent back a “photograph of an adult woman.”
Attia confessed, “I responded with crude, tasteless banter,” admitting that it is now “very embarrassing,” to see how he engaged with Epstein. “I will not defend it. I’m ashamed of myself for everything about this. At the time, I understood this exchange as juvenile, not a reference to anything dark or harmful,” he added.
Attia claimed that in 2018 he learned that Epstein’s 2008 conviction, which he allegedly characterized as “prostitution-related charges,” was “grossly minimized,” which is when he started to distance himself from the man. (Epstein was convicted in Florida in 2008 on a charge of soliciting prostitution from someone under 18.)
“I was incredibly naïve to believe him. I mistook his social acceptance in the eyes of the credible people I saw him with for acceptability, and that was a serious error in my judgment,” Attia wrote. “To be clear, I never witnessed illegal behavior and never saw anyone who appeared underage in his presence.”
He continued, “Nothing in this letter is meant to minimize the harm suffered by the young women Epstein abused. Their trauma is permanent.”
Attia noted he was “not asking for a pass” from anyone, but claimed roughly 10 years after he sent the emails to Epstein — and being the man that he is today — he “would not write them and would not associate with Epstein at all.”
“I recognize that my actions and words have consequences for the people I care deeply about, including all of you,” he concluded. “I regret the cost this has placed on you, and I take responsibility for it.”

Floyd Mayweather Sues Showtime, You Cheated Me Out Of Millions!
Floyd Mayweather says he made over a billion bucks in earnings over his legendary career, but the 50-0 fighter claims all the money didn’t make it to his bank account … and now he’s suing Showtime, claiming they played a big role in his ex-manager screwing him out of hundreds of millions of dollars!
In the lawsuit, filed by Floyd in California, and obtained by TMZ Sports … Mayweather says he’s gunning to “recover hundreds of millions of dollars in the misappropriated funds and damages resulting from a long-running and elaborate scheme of financial fraud,” allegedly perpetrated by his longtime advisor Al Haymon … and now he’s claiming Haymon got “substantial participation and aid” from Showtime and former Showtime Sports president, Stephen Espinoza.
Showtime and Espinoza are listed as defendants … while Haymon is NOT being sued.
Floyd claims Haymon, with whom he worked for over a decade, misappropriated a “significant portion of his career earnings” to the tune of a whopping $340 million … and he says he did so with the help of Showtime and SE.
Mayweather says the money is still “‘missing’ and unaccounted for.”
In the suit, Mayweather references several of his biggest fights, including against Manny Pacquiao and Conor McGregor, alleging Showtime and Espinoza effectively delivered money owed to Floyd directly into Haymon’s hands by sending accounts essentially controlled by Haymon.
Years later, after the undefeated boxer switched managers and his new team asked to see Showtime’s books, which Floyd claims the network told him were “lost in a flood,” or weren’t accessible.
Mayweather is suing Showtime and Espinoza for aiding and abetting breach of fiduciary duty, civil conspiracy to commit fraud, conversion, and unjust enrichment.
In addition to the $340 million, Mayweather is also seeking punitive damages.
Reached for comment, Mayweather’s attorney, Bobby Samini, predicted victory, saying … “Floyd is one of boxing’s biggest pay-per-view draws. He generated hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for Showtime. Mr. Mayweather now takes this fight to the courtroom to recover what he rightfully earned. Retiring undefeated at 50-0, Mr. Mayweather will go the distance in the courtroom just as he has in the ring.”

Quinton Aaron’s Family Says His Wife Isn’t Legit, She Claims Spiritual Marriage
Quinton Aaron‘s recovering in the hospital from a spinal stroke, but his family says the woman who is by his side and making medical decisions for him is fibbing about being his wife … though she begs to differ.
The actor’s brother, Jarred Aaron, tells TMZ … the woman claiming to be his wife, Margarita Aaron, is actually married to another man. His immediate worry is she’s misrepresenting herself as his legal wife to the medical staff at the hospital and is helping to make “crucial and life-saving medical decisions.”
Margarita tells us … she and Aaron “got spiritually married.”
She adds … she does NOT have power of attorney, and has never made medical decisions on Quinton’s behalf.
Jarred isn’t buying that, saying … “I genuinely fear for my brother’s life.”
Margarita says, “If he’s saying I’m such a bad person, why does he live with me and Quinton?” In response, Jarred says he didn’t know they weren’t legally married when they all lived under the same roof.
Quinton, by all accounts, has not been confronted with these claims … his brother says he’s not telling Quinton yet, and is going to wait until he makes a full recovery from the spinal stroke his family says he suffered.
Still, Jarred says … “I have all this crucial information that Quinton doesn’t know about and now it feels like I’ve gotten it too late.”
Quinton’s family tells us in a new statement … “Since the health crisis of our beloved family member Quinton Aaron, we have raised some suspicions about the legitimacy of Quinton & Margarita’s ‘marriage’ to each other as well as her legitimacy as a registered nurse.”
The family adds … “We have found some alarming details. We as a family believe Margarita isn’t who she claimed to be to us. This has caused us to want to investigate her further.”
Margarita’s own family members are also backing up the Aaron family’s suspicions … with her daughter and niece telling us Margarita is indeed married to another man.

DJT says he would absolutely consider sending more federal help … and he calls Nancy’s disappearance bizarre.

As you know … NG was last seen at her Arizona home Saturday. Cops showed up to her house Sunday after she was reported missing … and immediately observed some concerning signs. New footage shows a trail of blood outside Nancy’s home.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos spoke at a press conference Tuesday … where he said his department is working a ton of leads, but they have no new information. Special Agent Jon Edwards of the FBI was also at the press conference to confirm the feds are on the case.
Around the same time as the press conference, we received an alleged ransom note with a specific dollar figure and key details, which we have passed on to authorities.

While President Trump has already said he’d consider sending federal aid, Arizona Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego took a more measured approach … sending a message of support to the family while making it clear politicians should get involved in law enforcement matters as long as officers are effectively doing their jobs.
