The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Dakota Mortensen has gone public with Shania Powell, closing out the summer season with plenty of PDA.

“Soaking up our last bit of summer 🙈🤍,” Shinia wrote via Instagram on Saturday, August 8, sharing a handful of photos from a recent getaway to Island Park, Idaho.

In one snap, Dakota, 33, leaned over to kiss Shinia on a mountaintop overlook. The twosome also cuddled up in other outdoorsy images, sharing big grins as they embraced.

Dakota and Shinia were first romantically linked in July after being spotted together at a baseball game in Utah. The duo previously hooked up during Mormon Wives season 4 — amid Dakota’s tumultuous on-and-off romance with Taylor Frankie Paul. (Shinia was introduced as a friend of Taylor’s pal Miranda McWhorter.)

“I do just want to say sorry for everything that I did. I know that caused a lot of problems,” Dakota told Taylor, 32, during a FaceTime call on the Hulu show, addressing his history with Shinia. “I’m sorry for hooking up with Shinia. Was it dumb of me? Yes. Could I have picked someone else? Yes. I picked somebody that was obviously going to come with problems, and that was very s***y of me to do.”

Dakota’s fling with Shinia also sparked drama for Taylor and Miranda, 28, whose friendship had only started to get back on track after their now-viral 2021 soft-swinging scandal.

“I think the Taylor and Dakota of it all was definitely a contributing factor, especially since I was very vocal about how her pursuing that relationship would affect her and would affect me,” Miranda exclusively told Us in March. “It felt like it was just blatantly disregarded on multiple occasions. “Also, I understood where Taylor was coming from with her frustration as well. As things continue to play out, I think other things unfolded, and it just made that decision easier.”

They can’t clone this??” he wrote in comments on Instagram, before adding, “How y’all come up with this? 😂😂😂 AI ain’t that advanced,” making it clear he wasn’t buying the internet’s theory.

The speculation started after Usher performed ‘Caught Up’ and ‘Bad Girl’ in an all-white look, complete with a matching baseball hat and sunglasses. Some concertgoers said the man onstage looked different from the Usher they were used to, pointing to his facial features, movements, and even the apparent lack of tattoos on his hands. Why those four seasons? That’s when James Norton’s hunky priest, Sidney Chambers, solved all sorts of mysteries alongside gruff Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green). When they’re not apprehending the guilty, they’re tending to their complicated personal life. Even though he’s a man of the cloth, Sidney is very much romantically active and secretly pines for married heiress Amanda Hopkins (Morven Christie), while Geordie has a loving if combative relationship with his opinionated wife, Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth). Setting them straight and keeping them honest is no-nonsense housekeeper Sylvia “Mrs. C’ Chapman (Tessa Peake-Jones), who is more law-abiding and devout than both men.

Grantchester’s mysteries-of-the-week aren’t all that complicated; a crime is committed, Sidney and Geordie investigate, a couple of red herrings lead them down the wrong path and the real killer is revealed. But the key to the show’s charm — and why it lasted as long as it did — is that its characters are so damn charming. Sidney and Geordie have a classic good cop/bad cop relationship, while supporting characters like Mrs. C and fellow priest Leonard (Al Weaver) give Grantchester the found-family dynamic that sets it apart from other crime shows. Netflix is only airing Grantchester’s first four seasons, but you can watch the entire series on PBS Masterpiece on Amazon Prime Video.

‘Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?’ (2022) – BritBox

‘Why didn’t they ask Evans?” Those are the last words said by Alex Pritchard (Leon Ockenden), who is found dying at a rocky beach by a shocked Bobby Jones (Will Poulter). Bobby doesn’t know the man, but he’s disturbed enough by his death to find out why someone pushed him off a cliff – and what his dying message meant. With the help of his friend and potential lover, sophisticated socialite Frankie Derwent (Lucy Boynton), Bobby interrogates Britain’s wealthy class to solve a mystery that someone is willing to kill to keep unsolved.

You can’t have a cozy murder mystery list without an Agatha Christie adaptation, and Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? checks all the genre’s essential boxes. The three-part miniseries is set when the novel was first released in 1934, so you’ll get to see some pretty snazzy Depression-era fashions. More importantly, you’ll be drawn into the limited series’ central mystery of why Alex was murdered and who — or what — Evans is. The British cast is superb, with Poulter and Boynton generating enough chemistry to ignite a thousand rom-coms. Oscar winners Emma Thompson and Jim Broadbent appear as Frankie’s rich and free-spirited parents, while House’s Hugh Laurie, who also directed the series, stars as a doctor who might be hiding a sinister secret.

‘The Marlow Murder Club’ (2024–Present) – PBS Masterpiece on Prime Video

The small English village of Marlow is quiet, quaint and too good to be real. When not one but two murders rock the community, several of its citizens decide to investigate the murders and keep the town’s reputation from falling even further into the gutter. While Judith (Samantha Bond), Suzie (Jo Martin) and Rebecca (Cara Horgan) don’t have any experience solving crimes, they make up for it by sheer gumption — and a successful track record of catching bad guys.

The results can be far more imaginative — and sometimes more revealing — than traditional period pieces. By bending reality, filmmakers gain the freedom to explore deeper cultural anxieties, political tensions, and philosophical questions that might otherwise remain hidden. ‘C.S.A.: The Confederate State of America’ (2004)

Presented as a satirical television broadcast, C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America imagines a chilling alternate timeline in which the Confederacy won the American Civil War. Framed like a documentary airing on a fictional Confederate television network, the film depicts a modern America still governed by slavery, racial hierarchy, and deeply ingrained systemic oppression. Through fake commercials, news segments, and historical retrospectives, it constructs an unsettling version of history that feels disturbingly plausible.

What makes the film so effective is its commitment to the format. Writer-director Kevin Willmott uses the mockumentary structure to expose the absurdity and brutality of institutional racism by presenting it through the mundane language of everyday media. ‘Never Let Me Go’ (2005)

Set in an alternate version of late-20th-century England, three children are raised at an idyllic yet strangely secluded boarding school, Hailsham. As they grow older, the trio gradually learns the devastating truth about their purpose: they have been created to serve as organ donors, destined to sacrifice their lives so that others may live longer. Despite this looming fate, their lives unfold through friendships, jealousy, and love.

Never Let Me Go has proved itself as a haunting piece of alternate history in how quietly it presents its premise. The world looks almost identical to our own, with the dystopian reality revealed ever so slowly through subtle details rather than dramatic exposition. Of course, Kazuo Ishiguro‘s source novel lays the foundation for this retrained approach. However, credit must be given for the film’s ability to explore questions of humanity, morality, and what it means to live a meaningful life. Instead of rewriting history through spectacle, Never Let Me Go imagines a society shaped by a single scientific advancement — and the moral cost that follows.

‘Anastasia’ (1997)

In this animated re-imagining of Russian history, after the fall of the Romanov dynasty, two charming men plan to pawn off a phony Princess Anastasia look-alike to earn a reward from the Dowager Empress (Dame Angela Lansbury). Luckily for them, Anya (Meg Ryan) — a young woman suffering from amnesia — stumbles into the auditions, bearing a striking resemblance to the missing Princess. Little do they know, she is exactly the woman they are looking for.

While it does take enormous creative liberties with historical fact (note the megalomaniac lich sorcerer), Anastasia transforms tragedy into a sweeping fantasy adventure. The film blends alternate history with vibrant fairy tale elements, turning the mystery of the Romanov daughter’s fate into a lush animated musical. Sure, historians may raise their eyebrows, but between the story’s romantic optimism and rich visual style, Anastasia creates a sweeter version of history that feels far more magical than reality. Plus, at least this one is perfect for the whole family.

‘District 9’ (2009)

When a massive alien spacecraft arrives above Johannesburg in an alternate 1982 (and then seemingly stalls), humanity discovers its passengers are stranded extraterrestrial refugees. Decades later, the aliens have found themselves confined to overcrowded slums, while corporations exploit their technology. Meanwhile, government agent Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley) becomes entangled in the conflict after a mysterious accident begins transforming him into one of the creatures himself.

As a critically acclaimed sci-fi flick, District 9 brilliantly fuses the genre with alternate history by showcasing an apartheid society through the lens of extraterrestrial contact. The film’s documentary-style storytelling and gritty realism make its premise feel disturbingly believable. Rather than a traditional alien invasion tale, District 9 uses the vague framework of “history” to examine prejudice, exploitation, and systemic injustice with striking power.

‘Richard III’ (1995)

My Life With the Walter Boys is returning for season 4 on Netflix — but is every cast member coming back to the show.

Based on Ali Novak‘s book, My Life With the Walter Boys follows recently orphaned Jackie, a teenage girl from Manhattan who relocates to rural Colorado after she is taken in by the Walters, a family of seven sons and a daughter.

In addition to Nikki Rodriguez, the show stars Noah LaLonde, Ashby Gentry, Johnny Link, Corey Fogelmanis, Connor Stanhope, Zoë Soul, Jaylan Evans and Sarah Rafferty.

Before the show returned for season 3, Rafferty promised to Us that season 3 was worth the wait.

“We’re about to finish filming! I just came home from Calgary this weekend for this,” Rafferty shared in November 2025. “It’s getting very cold there. It’s so fun.”

Rafferty, who plays Katherine, gushed about her time on set.

“I can tell you that those actors are as easy to love as their characters. They are all the salt of the earth,” she noted. “I think season 3 is chef’s kiss — it’s so beautifully shot and cinematic and has such wonderful story lines.”

Viewers will quickly find themselves “really invested” courtesy of the characters. “I’m really excited for everybody to see season 3,” Rafferty added. “I’m so grateful for how season 2 was received — really grateful.”

Despite delivering consistently exciting performances, Jake Gyllenhaal has clearly struggled at the box office for the majority of his career. Gyllenhaal’s previous movie with Ritchie, the acclaimed war drama The Covenant, grossed $22 million against a reported budget of $50 million. The year before that, he starred in Michael Bay’s Ambulance, which fell short of box-office expectations as well, grossing just over $50 million worldwide against a reported budget of $40 million. However, one critically acclaimed masterpiece in Gyllenhaal’s filmography managed to break out.

The movie was released theatrically in 2014, during a particularly solid run for Gyllenhaal that also included the cop drama End of Watch and the psychological thriller Prisoners. The 2014 movie grossed $50 million worldwide against a reported budget of $8.5 million, and has since emerged as a modern cult classic. The movie received widespread acclaim and earned a Best Original Screenplay nomination at the Oscars. But Gyllenhaal was snubbed despite receiving nominations at the Actor Awards, the BAFTAs, the Golden Globes, and the Critics’ Choice Awards.

The Movie Received Widespread Acclaim

We’re talking, of course, about Nightcrawler. The neo-noir thriller features Gyllenhaal as a lone wolf with a knack for capturing dramatic crime footage in Los Angeles. But when his work begins to get noticed, he begins making questionable ethical decisions to further his career. Directed by Dan Gilroy, Nightcrawler holds a “Certified Fresh” 95% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Restless, visually sleek, and powered by a lithe star performance from Jake Gyllenhaal, Nightcrawler offers dark, thought-provoking thrills.” The movie was added to Netflix this month, which also released Gilroy and Gyllenhaal’s follow-up together, Velvet Buzzsaw. Gilroy also worked with his brother Tony Gilroy on the acclaimed Star Wars series Andor.

Morgan Freeman is expanding his celebrated career beyond film and television with a deeply personal project rooted in the music of his Mississippi childhood. The 89-year-old actor narrated and produced “Morgan Freeman’s Symphonic Blues Experience,” a 12-track album tracing approximately 100 years of blues history. The Oscar winner’s latest venture is not simply a celebrity experiment with a different medium. Freeman has maintained a lifelong connection to blues music and is a co-owner of the Ground Zero Blues Club in Mississippi.

Freeman’s interest in the blues began long before he became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable performers. “I heard the blues for the first time on my grandmother’s porch in the Mississippi Delta, and it has never left me,” Freeman said in a statement obtained by Rolling Stone. That early memory became the foundation for an album featuring musicians Taj Mahal, Keb’ Mo’ and Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell, along with the Chineke! Orchestra.

The collection opens with Taj Mahal performing a cover of “Death Letter Blues,” which Delta blues musician Son House originally recorded in 1965. “Having Taj Mahal kick off this album with a cover of Son House’s classic Death Letter Blues strikes the perfect tone for the introduction of this album,” Freeman explained.

The cover was released on Juneteenth, a decision that Freeman emphasized held historical importance. He said the timing “is not just symbolic, it is the truth of where this music comes from and who made it. I hope people listen and remember.” Other songs featured on the album include “Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground” and “Cadillac Assembly Line.”

The Actor Explains Why The Blues Remains So Powerful

During an appearance on “CBS Mornings,” Freeman described the blues as a musical form created from fundamental human experiences. “The blues. It’s come from the most basic, visceral expression of humanity,” he said. “It comes from a field holler. African Americans, those people whose closer connected to the origins in Africa, they have their own way of working and it’s a rhythm thing.”

Freeman previously discussed that connection during the 2025 Chautauqua Lecture Series, recalling how the music surrounded him while he was growing up. “I was raised primarily in Mississippi with a few excursions outside, but the best of my growing up was spent in Mississippi in the Delta, Greenwood, Mississippi, to be exact,” he said.

For Freeman, blues music was not something he consciously discovered or decided to study. It was already embedded in the environment around him. “My association with the blues is really not an association at all,” the “Million Dollar Baby” star explained. “It’s just there in the air. You start hearing it at a very young age, because there are a lot of guys going around plucking on guitars and singing sad songs.”

He added, “The blues has this beginning with African Americans because working in the fields, they had a work holler, as it were.”

“Morgan Freeman’s Symphonic Blues Experience” was released through Decca Records on Friday, August 7. The album is scheduled to become available for streaming and digital download on August 14. Its release is also being supported by a limited three-date concert run.

The tour began in Houston on August 7, the same day the physical album was released. It will continue with a performance in Memphis on September 26, then travel to Gulfport, Mississippi, on October 17. The final stop brings the project back to Freeman’s home state, reinforcing the personal and geographical connection at the heart of the album.

Although the symphonic blues collection represents a significant expansion of Freeman’s work in music, it is not his first appearance on a recording. The actor was featured on B.o.B.’s 2012 track “Bombs Away.” He later brought his distinctive voice to Metro Boomin and 21 Savage’s 2020 album “Savage Mode II,” on which he served as a narrator.

His new project gives him a considerably larger creative role, allowing him to help shape an entire collection around the history and evolution of a genre that has followed him throughout his life. The album also connects naturally to Freeman’s involvement with Ground Zero Blues Club. Located in Mississippi, the venue reflects his ongoing effort to support and celebrate blues music beyond his work in Hollywood.

Freeman has not abandoned acting while pursuing his latest musical endeavor.

He recently returned as Edwin Mullins in the third season of Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ spy thriller “Lioness,” which premiered August 2.
