26 Years Later, ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’s Most Controversial Episode Deserves a Second Look

Published

on

Ray Barone is a jerk. That’s not a criticism of Everybody Loves Raymond or how Ray Romano plays the character. The show is hilarious, and Romano is a gifted performer, but Ray Barone is written to be a dolt of a selfish husband who messes up week after week, angering his wife, Debra (Patricia Heaton), and making viewers laugh. He gets away with it, both with his family and us, because he tries to be better, even if he falls short.

Sometimes, Everybody Loves Raymond will switch things up and make Debra the one in the wrong, yet even then, rather than trying to understand, Ray often thinks only of himself or seeks to win. Such is the case with one of the sitcom’s funniest and most controversial episodes, “Bad Moon Rising”. In it, Ray is terrified of Debra’s PMS mood swings. Rewatching the episode so many years after its Season 4 debut in 2000 is a strange experience. The laughs are still there, and so is a level of uncomfortability that wouldn’t work today.

Patricia Heaton Won an Emmy for ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’s “Bad Moon Rising”

“Bad Moon Rising” centers on Deb is the throes of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Women being on their periods have often been used as a source of drama or even comedy in movies and TV. You’ve seen the examples, where a woman is reduced to a raging, terrifying monster one week a month. “Bad Moon Rising” is no different, yet what can’t be debated is how masterfully talented Patricia Heaton is. She gives it her all, resulting in an Emmy win for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

The episode begins with Ray telling his friends, dad, Frank (Peter Boyle), and brother, Robert (Brad Garrett), to be quiet because Deb’s “not feeling good hormonally.” The man looks half scared to death, and we quickly see why. When she comes downstairs, Deb gives him crap for the messes he makes. Ray blames it all on “mood swings.” In the men’s minds, the solution is easy: give her medication. Later, Ray annoys Deb by surprising her with takeout for dinner when she’s already started cooking. Instead of Ray apologizing, it’s Deb who does. Ray, in his own way, tries to help by showing his wife the bottle of PMS pills he bought. It’s an insensitive move, one that’s even his adoring mother can’t accept when she quickly slaps Ray for acting like his father.

Because Ray is so good at making things worse, when Deb goes out for a night away with Amy (Monica Horan), she comes back to Ray, accusing Debra of using her “lady’s days” to yell at him. At his wits’ end, he plays secret tapes he made of Debra’s mood swings to prove his point. This only causes Deb to cry and lash out at the man who’d rather tape record her than try to help make her life better. Having had enough, she rages with examples of all the stupid things Ray has done over the years. Ray falls to the ground and ends up backed into a corner, scared and shouting that he doesn’t know what to do.

Debra Barone Now Looks Like a Weakly Written Stereotype of a Struggling Woman

In 2000, it may have been funny to watch this bickering couple, and now it still can be if you’re familiar with Everybody Loves Raymond. The audience knows this is a lighthearted series and everything will be okay. But if you’re a new viewer, this is the last episode to start with. Take out the studio laughter, and it’s actually a pretty dark drama. It’s also one that falls short with Debra despite how talented Patricia Heaton is. It settles on low-hanging fruit, sticking to stereotypes. “Bad Moon Rising” plays this part for laughs when Amy calls. After a short talk, Deb is now in a good mood, her rage completely forgotten.

One of ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’s Best Episodes Was Born From a Wild True Story

Then, once more, it’s Deb who apologizes for her attitude. She doesn’t mean to treat Ray this way. It’s like she’s saying PMS means she can’t help it. In this world, every woman on their period gets mood swings, and it can’t be controlled. The episode title (written by two men, Romano and Phil Rosenthal) says it all: a woman with PMS is like a werewolf. Now, a sitcom with 30 minutes to work with can’t get into the intricacies of a woman’s feelings when her body is going through so much. That’s not what an audience is tuning in for. In 2000, the episode was progressive for even taking a look at women’s issues. Still, today, it’s not enough simply to have it be a plot point. Deb Barone is too smart and three-dimensional a character to be reduced to a trope.

Ray Barone’s Mistakes Keep “Bad Moon Rising” Watchable

What keeps “Bad Moon Rising” from going off the rails and being completely offensive is that it’s not making Deb the bad guy because they make Ray’s insensitivity worse. This is shown both through Ray’s actions and Deb’s attempts at communication. His wife is spot on when she tells him he’s insensitive. Those aren’t the words of a mood swing. It’s the truth.

Romano and Rosenthal wisely acknowledge that Ray is part of the problem, which is a great start. The failure is in limiting Deb to one note. Even when Deb tells Ray she loves him, she has to cry uncontrollably. At the end of “Bad Moon Rising,” Deb is calmly asking Ray to be better. He can’t hear her, though. Instead, he offers his wife pills, and the writing requires her to knock them out of his hand rather than simply saying no. It’s not about Ray growing or understanding that he has to be better. It only reinforces the generalization of PMS and tells men they’ll never understand. They just have to get through it.

Mama June shows off her impressive weight loss as she arrives in LA with Papa Bear

Mama June is opening up about a frightening new medical chapter that has her worried about her future physical abilities.

The reality television star recently shared details about a series of health scares that have kept her in a state of constant concern.

This comes months after June opened up about still grieving her late daughter, Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell, who passed away in 2023 following a battle with cancer.

June is facing a medical condition that she fears could eventually take away her ability to move. During an interview on the “Virtual Reali-Tea” podcast, the 46-year-old reality star revealed that while her condition isn’t life-threatening, it is serious enough to potentially change her life forever.

“We know it’s not ever gonna kill me, but it could immobilize me,” she explained, per Page Six. This new struggle comes after a difficult year that included an unexpected total hysterectomy due to complications with fibroid cysts.

Additionally, the health scare was particularly heavy for the “Toddlers & Tiaras” alum following the death of her daughter, Cardwell, who passed away from cancer at age 29.

June admitted that the experience left her terrified that she was facing a similar fate. “I was worried it was going to be ovarian cancer,” she said, noting that she spent a long time stuck in her own head with worry.

While she is currently navigating menopause, she clarified that her latest mobility concerns are a completely separate issue.

The current concerns regarding Mama June’s mobility follow a terrifying episode in 2025 that saw her rushed to the emergency room.

During an episode of “Mama June: Family Crisis,” the reality star met with a psychic who issued a stark warning about her physical well-being.

The fortune teller told her that she had “lost a lot of health” due to an immense burden of stress. Most shockingly, the psychic predicted that June was at high risk for a heart attack if she didn’t find a way to manage the pressure she was carrying, per The Blast.

The warning proved to be eerily timely, as June began experiencing severe discomfort almost immediately after the reading.

Though she initially tried to decline medical help, her condition worsened until she felt like she was “about to throw up,” prompting a producer to insist she go to the hospital.

As they drove to the emergency room, a frightened June admitted that the pain was “way worse” than it had ever been. However, doctors ultimately determined that the intense pain was being caused by ovarian cysts, not a heart attack.

Mama June Was Also Battling With Grief

The lingering stress from Mama June’s ongoing health scares is deeply intertwined with the emotional toll of the last two years.

In December 2025, the reality star shared a lengthy and raw video on Instagram to mark the second anniversary of her daughter Anna’s passing.

She pushed back against critics who assumed she was no longer grieving just because she wasn’t always crying on social media.

“Just ‘cause I’m not on here boo-hooing doesn’t mean I don’t have bad days,” she fired back. She further admitted to being an “emotional wreck” behind the scenes, as reported by The Blast.

In a heartbreaking caption, the 46-year-old admitted that losing a child has been “one of the hardest things” she has ever faced, even more difficult than her highly publicized battle with drug addiction.

Adding to the family’s intense emotional and physical burdens, June also faced every mother’s worst nightmare. In September, the reality star revealed that her youngest daughter, Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson, was involved in a serious car accident near her home in Colorado.

Mathew Knowles Explains End Of Interview After Mention Of Tina

Rihanna Seemingly Addresses Baby Rumors, Talks "Little Pouch"

Mathew Knowles activated the BeyHive earlier this week when a video surfaced of him abruptly ending a media interview. The moment occurred as the interviewer was presenting him and Tina Knowles with their verbal flowers for the success of Destiny’s Child. After the shortened interview went viral, the famous dad explained why he walked out. Meanwhile, Mama Tina appears to be unbothered and focused on promoting her new gumbo business!

RELATED: Match Made? Mathew Knowles’ New Photo With Beyoncé’s Step-Mom Has The Internet Buzzing (PHOTO)

Was Beyoncé’s Dad Shading Her Mother In THIS Moment?

In addition to being Beyoncé’s dad, Mathew Knowles was once her manager for nearly 18 years. He saw her through her time with Destiny’s Child and later as she went solo. By 2011, the superstar announced the end of their business relationship for personal reasons. That year, TMZ reported that Mathew believed Live Nation had poisoned his daughter against him by claiming he stole funds. He denied the allegations despite an investigation showing missing funds. Also, in 2011, Mathew and Tina divorced after 31 years of marriage.

Fast-forward to 2026. Knowles recently sat with New York’s PIX 11 anchor, Kendis Gibson. However, the planned interview didn’t last long after Gibson brought Tina Knowles into the discussion, asking Mathew about his ex-wife’s contributions to Destiny’s Child. Gibson said, “You’ve earned your flowers. I said the same thing to Ms. Tina Knowles. You guys put in the work, and obviously the talent was there, with your kids and your grandkids.” In response, Mathew said, “What work did she put in?” Gibson, seemingly stumped, responded, “the hair.” Before Destiny’s Child took off, Tina was known to be involved with the girls’ hairstyles and costumes.

“Ok, you’re absolutely right, and the styling. The imaging. You’re right,” Mathew Knowles agreed.

After Gibson continued to list Mama Tina’s contributions, including the group name, Mathew said, “Sure.” After Gibson said it was “a joint effort,” Knowles hesitated to agree and responded, “We’ll stop now” while standing up. The interviewer started laughing, seemingly thinking Beyoncé and Solange’s dad was kidding. Mathew joined in on the laughing but continued to make his way out, reassuring Gibson that nothing was wrong and shaking his hand.

Mathew Knowles Explains Why He Ended Interview, Source Slams Explanation

On Monday (March 2), Page Six published an exclusive response from Mathew Knowles about the awkward interaction with PIX 11. Mathew claimed that the interview’s abrupt end was a culmination of things. First, he claims, Kendis Gibson was 15 minutes late. Then, Gibson allegedly kept asking questions about Mama Tina. However, “the interview was supposed to be about Destiny’s Child’s tribute concert,” he said. He announced the orchestra-inspired tribute to the former girl’s group in January.

“How it starts is how it ends. It started on a bad note, and obviously ended on a bad note for him,” Mathew Knowles reportedly said. “I politely ended the interview, shook his hand and took a photograph.”

Page Six reports that an inside source shut down Mathew Knowles’ claim that the interview arrived late. Instead, the source said, Gibson was there early as the crew was setting up. Additionally, the source said that Gibson did not ask multiple questions about Tina Knowles, but was instead “giving them their flowers…praising them for the work they’ve done.”

Has Mama Tina Knowles Responded Yet?

From the looks of it, Ms. Tina is paying her ex-husband’s apparent shade dust. On Tuesday, she posted multiple times on Instagram about her business booth, Mama Tina’s Gumbo, at the Houston Rodeo. She posted at least two enthusiastic reviews from a man and a woman who loved her gumbo. “I am from Louisiana, so I know real gumbo. But Ms. Tina’s gumbo? …Beyoncé wouldn’t be Beyoncé without Ms. Tina’s gumbo. That’s some gumbo, baby,” the woman said. She shared one of her three reels about the business on Instagram Story, along with a photo of herself. Zero mention of Mathew Knowles, for now.

Lovato rose to fame through Disney Channel and became one of the network’s stars with shows and movies that included “Camp Rock” and “Camp Rock 2,” “Princess Protection Program,” and “Sonny with a Chance.” She was just 15 years old when she rose to stardom and, admittedly, Lovato said it was a “challenging” experience.

As she said in the podcast “Baby, This Is Keke Palmer,” she was friends with fellow Disney star Selena Gomez before her entry into the network, which was an advantage because of their “built-in friendship.”

However, she had insecurities that made her compare herself to her peers. At that time, Gomez and Miley Cyrus were big Disney stars as well. Fortunately, her mother was there to guide her, telling her, “There’s room for everyone. It’s not a competition.” With the advice, she was able to navigate her growing popularity.

“That’s what I really stuck by… I was always rooting for everybody,” Lovato told Palmer.

According to Lovato, she had good and bad memories from her time at Disney. While she’s appreciative that the network paved the way for her career, she also faced difficulty behind the scenes. “There’s so many emotions that come to mind when I think about that period of time in my life,” the singer said.

Per the actress, she struggled with an eating disorder at that time. “I struggled with my mental health very much so, but ultimately, like, very fond memories. I made friends that I will have for the rest of my life,” she shared.

Lovato opened up about her eating disorder in 2011, saying that she overate when she was younger and developed an eating disorder in her teen years. “I’ve had a really unhealthy relationship with food,” she said back then.

At 33 years old, Lovato is looking back at her teen years, saying she has so much compassion for her younger self. The singer said they were expected to meet such high expectations despite their young age. “I think I was so hard on myself at that time that I wish I’d had more grace for myself,” she noted.

Admittedly, said she wasn’t the best person to work with at that time due to feeling “miserable” in her own skin. As a result, she acted “bratty” on set. After a “breakdown,” the singer attended a 12-step program and consequently made amends with the people she affected.

“I was being really reflective of everything and, like, I wanted to make sure I wanted to right my wrongs,” she explained.

Shortly after seeking treatment for her physical and mental health, Lovato decided to step away from Disney in 2011. She released a statement saying that returning in front of the camera wouldn’t be ideal for her recovery, adding, “It made sense for me to go ahead and leave the show to focus on my music.”

At that time, Lovato starred in “Sonny with a Chance,” and following her departure, the network rebranded the show into a sketch-comedy series titled “So Random!”

The Disney Channel supported Lovato’s decision, saying, “She is a talented young woman and our hearts are with her as she continues to take action to improve her health and bounce back from adversity.”
