45 Years Later, This Is Still the Greatest Adventure Movie of All Time

Published

on

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) introduction in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'

Can you believe that it’s been 45 years since Raiders of the Lost Ark first graced the silver screen? When George Lucas and Steven Spielberg get together, incredible things happen, and that was certainly the case here with the very first Indiana Jones adventure. Harrison Ford stars as Indy in this pulse-pounding, globe-trotting thrill, and after all this time, it continues to prove itself to be not only the best adventure movie of all time, but perhaps one of the best films ever made.

Raiders is a masterclass in action, character work, suspense, and pulp-inspired storytelling that helped shape pop culture more than we dared believe it could. Spawning several sequels, a television show, video games, and even comic books, Indiana Jones revived the B-picture genre as an A-list form of entertainment. So, what makes Raiders the best adventure movie ever made? Here are some of the reasons we consider the first theatrical Indy outing to be superior to all others.

It’s Harrison Ford At His Best as Indiana Jones

In his career, Harrison Ford has played Indiana Jones in live-action on six separate occasions (yes, including that one episode of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles), but when you put them all together, he’s still at his best here in Raiders. His cowboy-like swagger commands every moment he’s on the screen, from that initial introduction with the whip to the moment he shows up with a rocket launcher threatening to blow up the Ark of the Covenant. Ford perfectly embodies Indiana Jones in the same way he does Han Solo, with natural charisma.

Additionally, Raiders of the Lost Ark also allows Ford to explore his more sensitive side. Apart from being a badass teacher-turned-adventurer (and he’s certainly that), the film allows it’s leading star to occasionally offer glimpses of the man underneath, yet without removing that masculine exterior. We see this in his despair at Marion’s (Karen Allen) apparent death, as well as his several defeats at the hands of René Belloq (Paul Freeman). No matter his emotional state, Indy is still Indy.

01

You’re dropped into a dangerous situation with no warning. What do you need most from a partner?
The first few seconds tell you everything about who belongs beside you.

02

You have to get somewhere dangerous, fast. How do you travel?
How you get there is half the mission.

03

You’re pinned down and outnumbered. What does your ideal partner do?
This is when you find out what someone is really made of.

04

The mission is paused. You have one evening to decompress. What does your partner suggest?
Who someone is when the pressure drops is who they actually are.

05

How do you prefer your partner to communicate mid-mission?
Good communication is the difference between partners and a liability.

06

Your enemy is powerful, well-resourced, and has the upper hand. How should your partner approach them?
The approach to the enemy defines the partnership.

07

Things go badly wrong and you’re captured. What do you trust your partner to do?
Who someone is when you need them most is the only thing that matters.

No one comes without baggage. The question is whether you can carry it together.

10

It’s the final moment. Everything is on the line. What do you need from your partner right now?
The last question is the most honest one.

Your Partner Has Been Assigned
Your Perfect Partner Is…

Your answers have pointed to one action hero above all others. This is the person built to have your back — for better or considerably, spectacularly worse.

Rambo

Your partner doesn’t talk much, doesn’t need to, and will have assessed every threat in your immediate environment before you’ve finished your first sentence. John Rambo is not a man of plans or politics — he is a force of nature shaped by survival, loyalty, and a capacity for endurance that goes beyond anything training can produce. He will not leave you behind. He has never left anyone behind who deserved to come home. What you get with Rambo is the most capable, most quietly ferocious partner imaginable — one who has been through things that would have broken anyone else, and who chose to keep going anyway. You’ll never need to ask if he has your back. You’ll just know.

James Bond

Your partner will arrive perfectly dressed, perfectly briefed, and with a cover story so convincing it’ll take you a moment to remember what’s actually true. James Bond is the most professionally dangerous person in any room he enters — and the most disarmingly charming, which is the point. He operates in a world of layers, where nothing is what it appears and every advantage is used without apology. You’ll never be bored. You’ll occasionally be furious. But when it matters — when the mission is genuinely on the line and the margin for error has collapsed to nothing — Bond is exactly the partner you want. He has survived things that have no business being survivable. He does it with style. That is not nothing.

Indiana Jones

Your partner will know the history, the language, the cultural context, and exactly why the thing everyone else is ignoring is actually the most important thing in the room. Indiana Jones is brilliant, reckless, and occasionally impossible — but he is also one of the most resourceful, most genuinely knowledgeable partners you could find yourself beside. He approaches every situation with a scholar’s eye and a brawler’s instinct, which is an unusual combination and a remarkably effective one. He hates snakes and gets personally attached to objects of historical significance, both of which will slow you down at least once. It doesn’t matter. What Indy brings is irreplaceable — and the adventures you’ll have together will be the kind people write books about. Assuming you survive them.

John McClane

Your partner was not supposed to be here. He does not have the right equipment, the right information, or anything approaching the right odds. He has a sarcastic remark and an absolute refusal to accept that the situation is as bad as it looks. John McClane is the greatest accidental hero in the history of action cinema — a man whose superpower is stubbornness, whose contingency plan is improvisation, and whose capacity to absorb punishment and keep moving would be alarming if it weren’t so useful. He will complain the entire time. He will make it significantly more chaotic than it needed to be. And he will absolutely, unconditionally, without question come through when it counts. Yippee-ki-yay.

Ethan Hunt

Your partner has already run seventeen scenarios by the time you’ve finished reading the briefing, and the plan he’s settled on involves at least two things that should be physically impossible. Ethan Hunt operates at the absolute edge of human capability — technically, physically, and intellectually — and he brings the same relentless precision to protecting his partners that he brings to dismantling organisations that shouldn’t exist. He is not easy to know and he will never fully tell you everything. But he will carry the weight of the mission so completely, so absolutely, that your job is simply to trust him — and the remarkable thing is that trusting him always turns out to be the right call. The mission will be impossible. He will complete it anyway.

All the Incredible Sets and Locations

It’s not uncommon for movies, and especially Hollywood blockbusters, to be filmed on large blue-screen sets these days. While there is a time and place for digital scenery, Raiders is impressive for its attention to detail and masterfully-constructed set pieces that make the whole thing feel larger than life. The snake temple in Tanis, for example, is a brilliant piece of work that is as much a character as those trying desperately to escape the slithering around them (the use of real snakes also perfectly adds to the suspense).

Additionally, the film’s on-location shoots in Tunisia and Hawaii, in particular, perfectly simulates Egypt and Peru is that we instantly believe it. It doesn’t feel like some poor digital recreation that takes us out of the adventure, but rather adds to the mystique and overall production value. While Raiders spent plenty of time in the studio, its use of place elevates the material.

The Perfect Mixture of Science and Religion

Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones and Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood in Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark

It can be quite difficult for modern blockbusters to so effortlessly balance the notions of science and religion in the same way that Raiders of the Lost Ark does. For every Disclosure Day that does the mixture injustice, there is a Project Hail Mary that honors both faith and fact in different ways. But back in 1981, Raiders of the Lost Ark perfected the idea by sending a skeptic archeologist after one of the most enchanting biblical discoveries out there, forcing him to confront the supernatural despite his opposing beliefs.

Raiders of the Lost Ark never shoves religion down one’s throat, but it does highlight this Old Testament object as a source of incredible power desired by the Nazis in their growing schemes to take over the world. Because the Ark is so central to the plot (not unlike the Holy Grail in The Last Crusade), Indy and those in search of the relic are forced to confront it through more secular, scientific methods — at least until they cannot deny its power. Whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, Raiders feels like it’s made for everyone.

The Practical Effects Still (Mostly) Hold Up

raiders-of-the-lost-ark-face-melt

For years now, audiences have lamented the absence of practical effects in many blockbusters, with many noting the decline in quality of CGI over the years. Wherever you fall in that debate, there’s no doubt that Raiders of the Lost Ark‘s use of practical effects is part of its charm. From the giant boulder that nearly crushes our hero to the sweeping car chases and explosions, everything about the film feels real, tangible, and authentic. Yes, even the infamous face-melting sequence.

Admittedly, not every practical effect used in Raiders holds up to scrutiny. Belloq’s demise, for instance, could have been done better today. That said, there’s a certain charm to terrifying moments like Arnold Toht’s (Ronald Lacey) face melting before our eyes that we cannot deny — the technical aspects alone are so enrapturing as we wonder how Spielberg and company pulled it off.

The Romance Between Indy and Marion

Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones and Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood in Raiders of the Lost Ark
Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones and Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Not all of Indiana Jones’ on-screen romances are particularly engaging, but what made Marion Ravenwood great from the get-go was that she was a woman who could rival Indy’s confidence. When we first meet her in Nepal, she’s drinking her customers under the table, and when Indy arrives looking for her father’s amulet, she is not duped by his pleas, but rather sees right through them. Marion knows Indy better than perhaps anyone, and it’s for this reason that the pair work so well together — and always return to one another.

Raiders of the Lost Ark doesn’t make more of its romantic subplot than it ought, yet Marion remains an important fixture in Indy’s journey that makes it all worth it in the end. The chemistry between Ford and Allen is exceptional, rivaling even the riveting on-screen romance between Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz in The Mummy. Without it, Raiders would be without its heart.

It’s Loaded With Meaningful Action

Indiana Jones faces off with a villain holding a sword in 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'

Another thing that sets Raiders of the Lost Ark apart from its contemporaries is the film’s purposeful use of action. There are no over-the-top overly-choreographed fight sequences just for the sake of it, nor does anything come across as ham-fisted or inauthentic. Every action sequence has a clear purpose, and in the moments where Raiders teeters toward redundancy, the picture reins itself in.

One famous behind-the-scenes tidbit from the set of Raiders is that Ford suggested that the initial three-page whip-versus-gun battle between Indy and the Arab swordsman be cut short. Rather than repeat the same “Indy’s whip saves the day” beat as previously expressed earlier in the film, our hero takes the villain down with a single shot — and it works masterfully in the picture. Just another example of how self-restraint can do wonders in moviemaking.

John Williams’ Triumphant and Immersive Score

Raiders of the Lost Ark - 1981 (3) Image via Paramount Pictures

Although John Williams had already blown audiences away with his scores for Star Wars and Superman, the composer defied the odds by doing so once again with Raiders of the Lost Ark. The famous “Raiders March” is a well-known piece of musical genius that sets a clear tone for the picture, establishing Indy as our leading hero, highlighting each romantic beat, and keeping us on the edge of our seats. It doesn’t just do everything that a good score should do, it excels with each new track.

Part of the reason that the Indiana Jones saga is so thoroughly rewatchable is because of Williams’ score. The rousing tune encourages the viewer to participate in the excitement and every time that familiar trumpet blast is heard, one is instantly transported to 1936 — or, at least 1981.

Visually Speaking, ‘Raiders’ Is Stunning

Raiders of the Lost Ark - 1981 (5) Image via Paramount Pictures

These days, even big-budget blockbusters feel like they’re shot like commercials and advertisements, but back when Raiders was first released, every shot was constructed like a painting. Part of this was the limited 35mm film stock that forced the filmmakers to be more selective with their time and resources, and part of it was the creative eye of cinematographer Douglas Slocombe, who shot the original trilogy.

In short, Raiders of the Lost Ark still looks great. The shot compositions, character blocking, and expert lighting techniques all combine to craft something that few can emulate today. It’s not just popcorn entertainment (though it is certainly that), it’s truly a work of cinematic art. No wonder it’s considered a crown jewel on the “Mount Rushmore” of Spielberg movies.

The Tight Script Hits All the Right Beats

A great film starts long before the cameras ever roll, and Raiders of the Lost Ark was destined for greatness the moment Lucas and Spielberg cracked the Indiana Jones character. Soon after, Lucas and Philip Kaufman went to work on the story, with Lawrence Kasdan penning the screenplay. Frankly, it’s one of the more perfect screenplays out there, especially when it comes to the adventure genre.

Raiders hits every story beat exactly when required, expertly balancing character work with plot in a 115-minute adventure that gives its heroes room to breath while never letting up on the stakes. There’s no excess fat here, as Raiders is well-trimmed and thoroughly brought to temperature. Not once are we bored, and that’s part of the magic.

‘Raiders’ Is George Lucas and Steven Spielberg At Their Best

A young Steven Spielberg with his hand on a young George Lucas

Although both Steven Spielberg and George Lucas had their own respective careers and creative visions apart from one another, the two will always be tied together by Indiana Jones. Raiders of the Lost Ark is truly the pair at their collaborative and creative best, as Spielberg’s clear cinematic vision is on full display while Lucas’ role as a creative force magnifies the hero and his journey. Without one or the other, Raiders would not be what it is today.

No matter if you adore Star Wars or think Jaws is the best movie ever, when it comes to the adventure genre, Lucas and Spielberg knew how to evoke all the stories they grew up with and repurpose them into an action-packed thrill worthy of its title. As one of the most recognizable heroes in film history, Indiana Jones was only ever possible because of these two filmmakers. It’s just a shame they weren’t creatively involved in Ford’s final installment as the character.

Lord of the Rings Icon’s Criminally Underrated Horror Movie Is Taking Over Free Streaming

Published

on

cooties-poster.jpg

You might be excited about the return of the MCU for Doomsday this December, or perhaps the release of Dune: Part Three, the final installment in Denis Villeneuve‘s acclaimed adaptation of Frank Herbert‘s Dune novels, on the very same day (December 18). But the big blockbuster sequel coming this December that is the most surprising treat for theatergoers is undeniably The Hunt for Gollum, the first standalone, live-action theatrical release set in the main timeline of Middle-earth since the original Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2027, the film sees a host of fan-favorite faces from the original return, including Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, and Elijah Wood as Gandalf, Gollum, and Frodo, respectively. Serkis also takes over directing duties from Peter Jackson. Excited about The Hunt for Gollum? Of course you are, and, to get you in the mood, one of Wood’s most underrated movies is about to come to free streaming. The film in question is Cooties, a horror zombie comedy that stars Wood alongside The Office‘s Rainn Wilson.

Also starring The Invisible Man director Leigh Whannell, Alison Pill, and more, Cooties is a fun, fresh, and brilliantly silly zombie story that follows a trio of elementary school teachers who must protect themselves from children who have been transformed into evil by contaminated chicken nuggets (yes, you heard that correctly). The film received a very limited theatrical release in 2015, as well as some pretty poor reviews from critics. However, its nonsense has aged well, with its gory irreverence helping it become a cult classic today. You can check out this movie for free next month, when it starts streaming on Plex on July 1.

Camp Crystal Lake · Friday the 13th

Jason Voorhees

Jason is relentless, but he is also predictable — and that is the gap you would exploit.

  • He moves in straight lines toward his target. He doesn’t strategise, doesn’t adapt, doesn’t outsmart. He simply pursues.
  • Your ability to keep moving, use the environment, and resist the panic that freezes most victims gives you a genuine edge.
  • The Crystal Lake survivors were always the ones who stopped running in circles and started thinking about terrain, water, and distance.
  • You think like that. Which means Jason, for all his indestructibility, would face someone who simply refused to be where he expected.

Haddonfield, Illinois · Halloween

Michael Myers

Michael watches before he moves. He is patient, methodical, and almost impossible to detect — until it’s too late for anyone who isn’t paying close enough attention.

  • But you are paying attention. You notice the shape in the window, the car parked slightly wrong, the silence where there should be sound.
  • Michael’s power lies in the invisibility of ordinary suburbia — the fact that nothing ever looks wrong until it already is.
  • Your spatial awareness and instinct to map every room, every exit, and every shadow before you need them is precisely the quality Laurie Strode had.
  • You are not a victim waiting to happen. You are someone who already suspects something is wrong — and acts on it.

Elm Street · A Nightmare on Elm Street

Freddy Krueger

Freddy wins by getting inside your head — using your own fears, your own memories, your own subconscious as weapons against you. That strategy requires a target who can be destabilised.

  • You are harder to destabilise than most. You’ve faced uncomfortable truths about yourself and you haven’t looked away.
  • The survivors on Elm Street were always the ones who understood what was happening and chose to face it rather than flee from it.
  • Freddy’s greatest weakness is that his power evaporates in the presence of someone who refuses to give him the fear he feeds on.
  • Your psychological resilience — the ability to stay grounded when reality itself becomes unreliable — is exactly the quality that keeps you alive here.

Derry, Maine · It

Pennywise

Pennywise is ancient, shapeshifting, and feeds on terror — but it has one critical vulnerability: it cannot function against someone who genuinely stops being afraid of it.

  • The Losers Club didn’t survive because they were braver than everyone else. They survived because they faced their fears together, and faced them honestly.
  • You ask the questions others avoid. You look directly at what frightens you rather than turning away.
  • That directness — the refusal to let fear fester in the dark — is Pennywise’s worst nightmare.
  • It chose the wrong target when it chose you. You are exactly the kind of person whose fear tastes like nothing at all.

Chicago · Child’s Play

Chucky

Chucky’s greatest advantage is that nobody takes him seriously until it’s already too late. He exploits the gap between how something looks and what it actually is.

  • You don’t have that gap. You take threats seriously regardless of how they present — and you never make the mistake of underestimating something because of its size or appearance.
  • Chucky relies on surprise, on the delay between recognition and response. You close that delay faster than almost anyone.
  • Your instinct to treat every unfamiliar thing with appropriate scepticism — rather than dismissing it because it seems absurd — is the exact quality that keeps you breathing.
  • Against Chucky, not laughing is already winning. You are very good at not laughing.

Why Alan Jackson’s Final Concert Didn’t Go As Planned

Alan Jackson at CMT Artists of the Year 2022 - Show

Alan Jackson‘s final concert nearly got off to a disastrous start after severe weather forced thousands of fans to seek shelter just moments before the country music legend was set to take the stage. The 67-year-old singer’s retirement show, “Last Call: One More For The Road – The Finale,” was delayed Saturday night at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium after lightning moved into the area, creating a tense situation during what was supposed to be a celebratory farewell. Fortunately, the weather eventually cleared, allowing Alan Jackson to take the stage and continue with the emotional sendoff marking the end of his touring career.

Concertgoers were already packed into the sold-out stadium when officials issued a weather alert warning that lightning was approaching the venue.

“At this time, lightning is approaching Nissan Stadium and the event has entered a weather delay,” the stadium wrote on X. “Please proceed to covered areas of the concourses or other interior areas at this time.” The announcement sent fans scrambling for shelter while organizers monitored the storm.

After a tense wait, officials confirmed the severe weather had passed and gave attendees the all-clear to return to their seats. “Inclement weather has cleared the area and fans are welcome to go back to their seats,” the venue later announced. “Alan will take the stage at approximately 9:25 p.m.!”

Opry announcer Kelly Sutton also reassured attendees that the show would continue while encouraging everyone to remain sheltered until conditions improved.

The farewell concert attracted some of the biggest names in country music, many of whom were on hand to celebrate Jackson’s decades-long impact on the genre. Lainey Wilson, Luke Bryan, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, and Lee Ann Womack were among the stars in attendance as fans gathered to honor one of country music’s most beloved performers.

The event served as both a concert and a celebration of a career that produced dozens of chart-topping hits, including “Remember When,” “Livin’ On Love,” “Chattahoochee,” and “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere.” For many fans, the evening represented the end of an era.

The significance of Jackson’s final performance extends beyond retirement. The country icon has been living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a rare inherited neurological disorder that affects muscle strength, balance, and mobility.

Although Jackson was diagnosed in 2011, he publicly revealed his condition a decade later, opening up about the challenges it presents while performing. Despite the diagnosis, Jackson continued touring and recording music, earning praise from fans for his determination to remain on stage for as long as possible. His farewell concert marked the culmination of that journey.

When Jackson announced his final concert in October, he made it clear there was only one place he wanted to close this chapter of his life. “We just felt like we had to end it all where it all started for me, and that’s in Nashville, Music City, where country music lives,” Jackson told PEOPLE at the time.

The two-time Grammy winner said he couldn’t imagine a better location for his final bow after spending decades building his career in the heart of country music. “It’s been a long road… and it’s taken me places I never imagined,” Jackson reflected.

The singer also promised fans that the finale would include many of the special people who helped shape his remarkable career.

Demand for the concert was so high that many fans were unable to secure tickets to the sold-out event. To ensure more people could be part of the historic evening, organizers livestreamed the concert on a large screen along Nashville’s famous Broadway district.

Even with the unexpected weather delay, fans remained determined to witness Jackson’s final performance, whether inside Nissan Stadium or gathered downtown.

For a singer whose music helped define modern country music, Saturday night wasn’t just another concert. It was the closing chapter of a legendary career that has spanned more than three decades, countless hit songs, and generations of devoted fans.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Will Beat Supergirl In Only One Weekend

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Will Beat Supergirl In Only One Weekend

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

Last summer, the DCU got off to a strong start with James Gunn’s Superman. Bright, colorful, and unapologetically silly, this cinematic universe seemed like the perfect alternative to the grim and gritty DCEU and the grounded, snarky MCU. As if to drive that point home, Gunn’s movie ended up beating out two highly anticipated Marvel movies: The Thunderbolts (a quirky, comedic blockbuster featuring several familiar faces) and The Fantastic Four: First Steps (an established brand name starring Pedro Pascal, Hollywood’s latest wonderboy). Now, we have a rematch between Marvel and DC, with Supergirl and Spider-Man: Brand New Day both competing to be the biggest film of the summer.

While Brand New Day won’t come out until July 31, it seems Marvel has already won this rematch. Supergirl’s opening weekend is far worse than anyone initially predicted, and the Woman of Steel is going to be slugging it out to get just $40 million domestic (less than a third of Superman’s $125 million). This poor initial box office, combined with poor word of mouth, means that the movie may not manage to get $200 million worldwide by the time all is said and done. By contrast, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is projected to earn $200 million domestically in its first weekend, more than Supergirl is likely to get in its entire run!

Spider-Man Versus Supergirl

Box office projections are a tricky thing. Initially, they are based on many factors, including early ticket sales and online buzz. However, the rubber really meets the road when the film makes its debut. Once analysts know how much a movie makes in its opening weekend, it becomes easier to estimate how much it will make in its entire run. With very occasional exceptions like Obsession, movies almost always make less money in every subsequent week. Based on real-time audience data gathered through CinemaScore, PostTrak, and other tools, it’s easier to get an idea of a film’s “legs”, i.e. how slowly its box office will decline from week to week.

As you might imagine, Supergirl is looking pretty bleak right now. Earning $40 million in its opening weekend is a bad sign because several superhero movies with a similar opening box office only ended up earning about 2x their opening box office. That means Supergirl could earn only about $80 million domestically. International box office is likely to be weaker than usual (because the movie features a female-centric movie based around a less popular character), so things get even bleaker. Even if the domestic legs are better than anticipated, this film will very likely end up earning less than $200 million worldwide. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is estimated to earn $200 million domestically in its opening weekend.

He’s Ready For The Fight

So, why is Supergirl likely to only earn about 2x, domestically, of its opening weekend? Basically, it comes down to how much money superhero movies with similar opening weekends ended up making. The Marvels (the first MCU film to lose money) earned $47 million domestically in its opening weekend and only ended up earning $206.1 million worldwide. Morbius earned $39.1 million domestically in its opening weekend and only ended up earning $167.4 million worldwide. Finally, Joker: Folie à Deux earned $37.8 million domestically and ended up getting only $207.5 million worldwide.

Now, Joker 2 is an example of how Supergirl could still earn over $200 million globally after a $40 million domestic opening weekend. But it’s worth noting that Joker is a much more popular character, and this was a sequel to a movie that earned over a billion dollars at the box office. That movie also came out in October 2024, when its primary competition was Venom: The Last Dance. Supergirl is currently getting its butt kicked by Toy Story 5, and its hopes of earning more in July will be dashed by highly anticipated blockbusters like The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day

No Matter What, Supergirl Will Lose Money

Even if Supergirl could achieve a worldwide box office greater than Brand New Day’s domestic opening weekend, that would be only a symbolic victory. Studio insiders have previously claimed that the film will need $300 million just to break even, and it’s not going to achieve that, much less turn a profit for the studio. That means the second DCU feature film is going to lose money, just like The Marvels did. Notably, it took the MCU a decade and a half before it made a movie that lost money.

The DCU managed this in less than a year, and with Supergirl flopping the same year Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday premier, the DCU may end up dying much, much quicker than the DCEU. Fans hoping to see these two cinematic universes slug it out are likely disappointed at how quickly the fight ended. After all, James Gunn set out to battle the MCU only to learn the most bitter lesson of all: Marvel’s got hands!

Landman’s Ali Larter Addresses How Taylor Sheridan Writes Women

Published

on

Landman

Landman‘s Ali Larter weighed in on how creator Taylor Sheridan has written female characters on his shows.

“I love that he creates dynamic and powerful women,” Larter, 50, recently told Us Weekly at the Newport Beach TV Fest sponsored by Visit Newport Beach.

Larter was excited to see what Sheridan, 56, created for her character, Angela, in season 3, adding, “With someone like Angela, she’s someone who loves her family, loves to have a good time and she has this big, huge heart.”

She continued: “For me, it’s been a dream getting to play her. I never know what’s going to come out of her mouth — but we figure it out on set — and it’s always a joy and a blast to play her.”

Based on the “Boomtown” podcast, Landman is Sheridan’s newest hit series, joining the ranks of Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lawmen: Bass Reeves and Lioness. The hit Paramount+ series introduced Billy Bob Thornton as a corporate fixer working for an oil titan in a West Texas-set drama with life-and-death stakes.

Larter, meanwhile, plays Tommy’s (Thornton) wife alongside their onscreen daughter Ainsley (Michelle Randolph). Before filming began on season 3, Larter teased what might be explored in future episodes.

“I really can’t even assume or try to guess what Taylor is going to imagine for season 3,” Larter shared at the event. “One thing I know is that to be able to get this far into our story lines, we all know each other. So the characters really understand what their dynamics are.”

Larter teased that Sheridan will “just lean into that,” adding, “And I think what’s nice is that it’s not the first time. So when you’re going back down, it’s not the anxiety and the nervousness. You’ll get a little bit of the jitters, but to be able to go down and just do what we love [is wonderful].”

The Landman cast has often spoken about their experiences working with Yellowstone’s Taylor Sheridan on his new hit series. Her costar Andy Garcia revealed he was just as in the dark about what is still to come.

“I’m in Taylor’s hands. I’m in it to win it. So, whatever he wants or has plans for me, I’m ready to execute,” he told Us. “It all starts from the writing. He’s the writer — and he’s the storyteller — and I think he writes all the characters in a very specific way. They are very well rounded and the stories are intertwined in a way that’s very engaging and he has a flair for the dramatic.”

Garcia, 70, continued, “He also [has] an understanding of humanity and empathy and he has an insight into relationships that are very keen. Whether it’s husband and wife, or father and daughter, or father and son, or in case maybe a businessman. It’s a privilege. When you have great writing, it’s always a privilege.”

Babylon 5’s First Season Shatters Star Trek’s Utopian View Of Humanity

Babylon 5's First Season Shatters Star Trek's Utopian View Of Humanity

By Jonathan Klotz
| Published

Star Trek has always had, at its core, the belief that humanity will come together over time, see past manmade differences, and approach the stars as a unified species. Gene Roddenberry’s series includes plenty examples of that not happening, but the basic tenet is the same, while J. Michael Straczynski’s  Babylon 5 starts off with a different belief: humans are humans, we’ll argue, fight, disagree, and always find a way to separate ourselves and others. In the case of Season 1 Episode 7, “War Prayer,” it’s the introduction of the Homeguard, a militant anti-alien group that reveals humanity still has its bad apples.

The War Prayer Introduces The Homeguard

Malcolm Biggs Can’t Possibly Be Evil

“The War Prayer” kicks off with a string of alien attacks onboard the space station with the expected response from the different ambassadors. Deleen (Mira Furlan) wants Sinclair (Michael O’Hare) to investigate, while G’kar (Andreas Katsulas) is rallying the aliens demanding more be done to keep them safe and punish those responsible. At the same time, and completely unrelated, Ivanova’s (Claudia Christian) former lover Malcolm (Soap Opera star Tristan Rogers) arrives on Babylon 5

Jeffrey Sinclair and Ivanova are one-step ahead of the attackers, purposely putting on a public display of anti-alien sentiment to gain their trust, which works. Malcolm reveals that the use of Earthforce stealth technology lets his group get close to the aliens with the goal of killing the ambassadors, thus kicking off an alien race war. It didn’t work when Charles Manson tried it in 1969, and it still didn’t work in 2258. What it does succeed at, is reinforcing the underlying currents of “Infection,” and “Mind War,” by showing viewers that there’s a dark side to the world of Babylon 5.

Babylon 5 Is About Hope For Tomorrow

The Homeguard remains in the background of Babylon 5 but it was only the precursor to something worse in later seasons: Nightwatch. Under the reign of President William Clark, the paramilitary group conducts a reign of terror that doesn’t differentiate between aliens and those insufficiently loyal to Clark. To the Nightwatch, Homeguard is where the misfits who couldn’t hack it in their ranks go.

Looking back at “The War Prayer,” Malcolm’s plan is quaint compared to what happens with the Earth Alliance. It also sticks out as an early example of Babylon 5’s cynical worldview which exists, not to be the status quo, but to highlight the work of Sinclair, John Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner), Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle), and Ivanova in working for a better tomorrow as a sign of hope that eventually humanity can change. Instead of Star Trek’s optimism tempered by later signs that not all is right with the Federation, Babylon 5 goes the opposite direction, and by the end of the series, there’s no doubt that humanity, and the universe, is in a better place.

Babylon 5 was one of the darker sci-fi series of the 90s but that’s what helped it become a huge hit with a rabid following to this day. The world-building on display within the first season pays off throughout the rest of the series with intricate, character-driven storylines and elaborate political machinations that have their roots within the first few episodes of Season 1. It’s a masterclass in writing science fiction and “The War Prayer” is only one example of creator JMS lanting seeds that pay off later.

Supergirl’s Writer May Be Who Destroys The DCU

Published

on

Supergirl’s Writer May Be Who Destroys The DCU

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

What do Warner Bros. executives and DC fans have in common? Simple: they are all looking for a scapegoat to blame for the box office failure of Supergirl. There are some obvious contenders here, including director Craig Gillespie (who made this cosmic road trip film look and feel excessively bland) and DC Studios CEO James Gunn, who insisted on making this the second film in the DCU. However, the internet’s preferred scapegoat right now is Ana Nogueira, the woman who wrote Supergirl. Some fans sounded the alarm when she was first hired, noting that the actor and playwright had written literally zero movies or TV shows before getting hired by James Gunn.

Still, that’s not exactly a dealbreaker. Curry Barker had not written or directed any feature films until Obsession, a movie made for $750,000 that ended up making more money than The Mandalorian and Grogu. Plus, geek icon James Gunn said that Nogueira’s script was one of the best he had ever seen, causing him to move Supergirl’s production schedule up and make it the second film in the DCU. Now that the movie is a critical and commercial dud, though, fans are worried about the DCU as a whole. That’s because Nogueira is also set to write Teen Titans and Wonder Woman, two of the most highly anticipated DC films.

An Inexperienced Screenwriter

Before writing Supergirl, Ana Nogueira established herself in Hollywood in a different way: as an actor rather than a screenwriter. She had recurring roles in popular shows like Blue Bloods and The Vampire Diaries; more recently, she had a meatier recurring role in Hightown. As a writer, she has mostly written for the theatre. When Lin-Manuel Miranda was still workshopping Hamilton, it was Nogueira who originated the insanely popular character Eliza Hamilton. She went on to write two plays of her own: Empathitrax in 2016 and Which Way to the Stage in 2022. Therefore, it’s disingenuous to say that she has no experience as a writer.

The problem, however, is how little experience she has in screenwriting. Previously, she was co-writer on a short film, We Win, in 2018. Otherwise, she has no prior writing credits for any feature films or TV shows. Previously, she submitted a horror script to Warner Bros. that never got made into a film. However, the studio was impressed enough to hire her to write a Supergirl film for the DCEU. She wrote two scripts, but neither saw the light of day before the DCEU imploded. When WB decided to move forward with Supergirl for the DCU, she was asked to pitch and ultimately hired for the job. The rest, unfortunately, is history.

One Movie Down, Two To Go

Clearly, Warner Bros. thought Ana Nogueira was a talented writer. DC Studios CEO James Gunn agreed, praising her script as one of the best he’s seen in a long time. It impressed him enough to accelerate Supergirl’s production schedule, making it the second feature film in the DCU. Even more notably, Nogueira’s script impressed him enough that she was chosen to write two more films: Teen Titans and Wonder Woman. Now that Supergirl has become a critical and commercial flop, though, fans are understandably worried that her next films will similarly underperform and effectively destroy the DCU.

That’s not guaranteed to happen, of course: Nogueira may learn from her mistakes and craft much better scripts for Wonder Woman and Teen Titans. Or maybe her writing is better than cynical fans think, and she just needs a better director than Craig Gillespie. If the studio gets nervous enough, they might give her the boot and hand those films to someone else. Bottom line? If some major changes happen, then the DCU can still be saved, especially if James Gunn’s Superman: The Man of Tomorrow is a huge hit. If no changes happen, though, Ana Nogueira may go from being a beloved Hollywood wunderkind to the woman who killed the DCU.

‘Disclosure Day’ Overtakes Tom Cruise’s Visually Stunning Sci-Fi Spectacle at the Box Office

Published

on

disclosure-day-poster.jpg

After two full weeks of release in theaters, Steven Spielberg‘s Disclosure Day is on the verge of hitting its first domestic box office milestone. The movie registered another hefty drop this weekend after an unexpectedly soft hold in its second frame. But it exceeded expectations in its opening weekend by grossing almost $45 million, and that’s what has pushed it toward the $100 million mark in two weeks. Disclosure Day should be able to hit this coveted milestone in the next few days, or perhaps its third weekend at the latest. However, this is likely as far as it’ll go. The movie has been slowing down significantly in recent days, and with fresh competition around the corner in the form of Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey, there’s only so much further Disclosure Day can go. That said, the movie overtook a fellow sci-fi title this weekend — a 2013 film starring Spielberg’s former collaborator Tom Cruise.

Spielberg and Cruise worked together on Minority Report and War of the Worlds, which grossed a combined total of nearly $1 billion worldwide. Both movies also received positive reviews, as has Disclosure Day. However, Spielberg’s new movie has left audiences underwhelmed, going by its so-so B CinemaScore grade. The film holds a “Certified Fresh” 80% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “A humanistic variation on one of Steven Spielberg’s most revisited themes, Disclosure Day‘s breathless pursuit of optimism in an age of conspiracy gets its biggest boost from career-highlight work by Emily Blunt.”

Your Fate Has Been Calculated
You’d Survive In…

Your answers point to the world your instincts were built for. This is the universe your temperament, your survival instincts, and your particular brand of stubbornness were made for.

The Resistance, Zion

The Matrix

You took the red pill a long time ago — probably before anyone offered it to you. You’re a systems thinker who can’t help but notice the seams in things.

  • You’re drawn to understanding how the system works before figuring out how to break it.
  • You’d find the Resistance, or it would find you — your instinct for spotting constructed realities is the machines’ worst nightmare.
  • You function best when you have access to information and the freedom to act on it.
  • The Matrix built an airtight prison. You’d be the one probing the walls for the door.

The Wasteland

Mad Max

The wasteland doesn’t reward the clever or the well-connected — it rewards those who are hard to kill and harder to break. That’s you.

  • You don’t need comfort, community, or a cause larger than the next horizon.
  • You need a vehicle, a clear threat, and enough fuel to outrun it — and you’re good at all three.
  • You are unsentimental enough to survive that world, and decent enough — just barely — to be something more than another raider.
  • In the wasteland, that distinction is everything.

Los Angeles, 2049

Blade Runner

You’d survive here because you know how to exist in moral grey areas without losing yourself completely.

  • You read people accurately, keep your circle small, and ask the questions others prefer not to answer.
  • In a city where humanity is a legal designation rather than a feeling, you hold onto something that keeps you functional.
  • You’re not a hero. But you’re not lost, either.
  • In Blade Runner’s world, that distinction is everything.

Arrakis

Dune

Arrakis is the most hostile environment in the known universe — and you are precisely the kind of person it rewards.

  • Patience, discipline, and political awareness are your core strengths — and on Arrakis, they’re survival tools.
  • You understand that the long game matters more than any single victory.
  • Others come to Dune and are consumed by it. You’d learn its logic and earn its respect.
  • In time, you wouldn’t just survive Arrakis — you’d begin to reshape it.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Star Wars

The galaxy far, far away is vast, loud, and in a constant state of violent political upheaval — and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

  • You find meaning in being part of something larger than yourself — a cause, a crew, a rebellion.
  • You’d gravitate toward the Rebellion, or the fringes, or whatever pocket of the galaxy still believes the Empire’s grip can be broken.
  • You fight — not because you have to, but because standing aside isn’t something you’re capable of.
  • In Star Wars, that willingness is what makes all the difference.

‘Disclosure Day’ Has Surpassed Tom Cruise’s Overlooked Sci-Fi Spectacle

Also featuring Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, and Colman Domingo, the movie grossed around $8 million in its third weekend, taking its domestic total to around $95 million. Disclosure Day has now surpassed the $89 million lifetime domestic haul of Oblivion, the 2013 sci-fi film starring Cruise and directed by Joseph Kosinski. The two would go on to work together on Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide in 2022. Also featuring Andrea Riseborough, Olga Kurylenko, Morgan Freeman, Melissa Leo, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Oblivion grossed nearly $290 million worldwide against a reported budget of $120 million. The movie holds a 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Visually striking but thinly scripted, Oblivion benefits greatly from its strong production values and an excellent performance from Tom Cruise.” Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.

Katy Perry Live At O2 London

Katy Perry was left heartbroken after being forced to cancel a highly anticipated festival appearance just hours before she was set to perform. The “Dark Horse” singer revealed that her headlining set at Belgium’s Werchter Boutique festival was scrapped due to severe weather concerns, leaving both the pop star and her fans disappointed. Katy Perry shared the news on social media Saturday, explaining that organizers had no choice but to pull the plug on the event in the interest of public safety.

In a message posted to Instagram, Perry revealed that she was already backstage preparing for her performance when she learned the festival had been ordered to end early. “Sadly, my set @WerchterBoutique tonight can’t happen due to a government-mandated cancellation because of the incoming inclement weather and crowd safety concerns,” she wrote.

The singer stressed that the decision was entirely out of her hands. “I am just as unhappy as you are,” Perry continued. “They gave me no choice.”

She added that while she wished she could change the outcome, the safety of fans had to come first. “This is beyond my control,” Perry explained. “I am sorry I can’t change the weather, and even sorrier that all of us can’t be together tonight.”

The cancellation carried extra disappointment because the performance would have marked Perry’s return to the Belgian festival stage for the first time since 2009.

According to the singer, she had even planned a nostalgic surprise for longtime fans. “I was even gonna wear the same outfit from that 2009 show again,” Perry shared, ending her message with a heartfelt note to concertgoers, writing, “I love you all, and please get home safe.”

Alongside the statement, Perry posted a photo of herself sitting outdoors wearing striped sweatpants and a white robe while smoking a cigarette. Nearby sat what appeared to be the outfit she had planned to wear during the show.

Festival organizers announced that the event would conclude at 9 p.m., one hour before Perry was scheduled to take the stage.

Officials cited forecasts calling for severe thunderstorms and dangerous weather conditions in the area. “The safety and health of everyone present is always our top priority,” organizers said in a statement.

The decision was made to ensure attendees could leave the venue safely and return home before the worst of the weather arrived. As a result, Perry’s headlining performance was canceled entirely.

While the cancellation was undoubtedly a setback, Perry isn’t slowing down. The singer remains scheduled to perform at several festivals and events throughout the summer, including a stop at Depot Live in the United Kingdom on June 30 at Cardiff Castle.

The canceled appearance comes during a particularly eventful period for Perry, who has remained in the spotlight following her recent split from Orlando Bloom and the release of a music video that sparked significant online discussion.

“In ‘Watch It Burn,’ I am wrestling with my darkness, but last year was pretty tough,” Perry said of her new song and video. “I have not given myself permission to be angry my whole life over things where I should be fucking angry about. What I’ve done is I pushed it down, but I should be fucking angry. I’m allowed to be angry for a f-cking moment.”

Adding fuel to the speculation surrounding Perry’s personal life are the emotional lyrics featured throughout the track.

In the song, Perry reflects on feeling undervalued and emotionally drained in a relationship before ultimately deciding to walk away. “For years, you fed me only crumbs / You paid me only dust,” she sings before later declaring, “You know I gave and I gave / Now I’m giving up.”

The chorus marks a dramatic turning point, with Perry shifting from heartbreak to empowerment as she sings, “Tonight’s the night, I light a match / Throw it hard behind my back / Gonna try to forgive and forget / Light a cigarette, and watch it burn.”

While the singer has not publicly confirmed who inspired the track, many fans have interpreted the lyrics as a reflection on her split from Orlando Bloom. The former couple, who share daughter Daisy Dove, ended their engagement after nearly a decade together, prompting widespread speculation that Perry’s latest music may be drawing from the emotional fallout of the breakup.
