5 Near-Perfect Thriller Shows Packed With Celebrity Appearances

Published

on

Guillermo del Toro in Barry

Thriller TV shows win over viewers with shocking twists and high-stakes mysteries that the audience wants to try to solve themselves. But, shows like Law & Order: SVU, Poker Face, American Horror Story, Barry and Only Murders In the Building also keep viewers hooked with their celebrity cameos. From A-list actors to people who appeared in the shows before they became famous, thriller series have used guest stars as a major draw for audiences.

Sure, celebrity guest stars can be used as gimmicks by shows to keep viewers engaged, but they can also be a way of bringing new energy or deepening the mystery. They bring a new energy than the series regulars and can leave the audience wondering what the purpose of them being on the show is. Are they a victim? A suspect? A clue to what happened? From long-running network dramas to prestige streaming hits, thriller shows love a good celebrity cameo and these five shows are proof.

At first, Barry seems like it’s just a dark comedy. But, it’s actually a psychological thriller just masquerading as a comedy. The tension in the show makes celebrity cameos especially effective, although it’s a technique the show really embraced in the fourth season. Unlike some shows that rely heavily on guest stars, Barry used them sparingly and only ramped up the effort in the final season. It makes the appearances even more impactful, even if some people might not have caught them all.

While big names like Jon Hamm and Guillermo del Toro were likely immediately noticeable to viewers, Barry also used a flurry of SNL alumni in the final season, a nod to star Bill Hader’s former home. As a thriller series, Barry proves that fewer celebrity cameos—used strategically—can be far more powerful than constant stunt casting.

‘American Horror Story’ (2011)

American Horror Story’s capsule seasons make it the perfect breeding ground for celebrity cameos. Ryan Murphy’s long-running thriller anthology built its reputation on shocking viewers both with the plot lines and headline-grabbing casts. It featured celebrities like Lady Gaga, Adam Levine, Naomi Campbell, Lena Dunham and Kim Kardashian.

As a horror-thriller television series, American Horror Story thrives on the chaos of the season. While some celebrity cameos – like Kardashian and Lady Gaga – were central characters for the entire season, others, like Dunham, were meant to be temporary guest stars that just helped move the season forward for an episode or two. Kardashian and Lady Gaga served as a way to bring viewers in ahead of the seasons, while Dunham and other guest stars often arrived with little warning and disappeared abruptly. They turned the season not only into a conversation about a show, but a pop culture event.

‘Poker Face’ (2023)

Rian Johnson’s Poker Face is a modern-day mystery-thriller that uses celebrity guest stars similarly to how SVU does, except they’re leaning into big names. Much like Columbo, the show introduces new characters every episode, making it ripe for using celebrity cameos to heighten interest among the audience.

The Peacock thriller stars Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cale, a human lie detector who is constantly coming into contact with a rotating cast of suspicious characters. Over the past two seasons and 22 episodes, audiences have seen over a dozen celebrity guest stars, including Adrien Brody, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cynthia Erivo and BJ Novak. Despite the guest appearances happening in capsule episodes, each actor anchors the story. It allows each episode of Poker Face to feel fresh while contributing to the show’s larger arc.

‘Only Murders in the Building’ (2021)

Only Murders in the Building may lean comedic, but its murder‑mystery backbone firmly places it among modern thriller TV shows—and its celebrity cameo roster is one of the most impressive on television. The show blends big names as side characters in the show with celebrities playing themselves throughout the seasons. It’s given the show a way of heightening the tension, because viewers aren’t always sure how long a character will be on the show and how important they’ll be to the story.

The show kicks off season one with an all-star celebrity cameo cast with Tina Fey playing true crime podcaster Cindy Canning, and Sting playing himself. Fey plays a central figure to all five seasons of the show, until she meets her untimely demise in the season five finale. While Fey is likely to be a smaller character for season six, her influence will still loom large with Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez working to figure out the circumstances of her death. Sting, however, plays a more fleeting character as a suspect-turned-witness in the investigation of Tim Kono’s death.

Season two brought Amy Schumer, playing herself, and at first, viewers are made to believe that she’ll be central to the investigation. But, time quickly moves beyond Schumer, relegating her to a relatively useless character. Then, in season 3, Matthew Broderick plays the nightmare version of himself as the cast investigate the murder of Paul Rudd. Rudd would later come back as another character in season four and then voice the robot doorman in the latest season.

With some celebrities playing themselves, some playing characters, and all of them having varying levels of importance, the show constantly encourages viewers to question whether a famous face is a joke—or a key clue. By blending mystery, suspense, and star power, Only Murders in the Building has perfected the formula for a thriller series packed with celebrity guest stars.

1

‘Law & Order: SVU’ (1999)

Jeremy Allen White was Michael Parisi in Law & Order: SVU

There’s really no show that comes even close to Law & Order: Special Victims Unit when it comes to the sheer number of celebrity guest appearances. Having been on the air for nearly 30 years, the show has become famous for featuring actors when they were in one of their first few roles or on the verge of stardom. With so many characters needing to be played, celebrity cameos run the gambit in Law & Order: SVU, ranging from kids before they became stars to well-seasoned acting veterans.

What separates SVU from other thriller series is how seriously it treats its guest stars. Since so many of the episodes are capsule stories, guest stars are often the main event. They’re the ones driving the plot lines forward, usually either as victims, suspects or key witnesses. Guest stars like Bradley Cooper, Adam Driver, Pedro Pascal, Sarah Paulson, Mahershala Ali, and Elizabeth Banks all appeared on the show before they were household names, and they all delivered emotionally heavy performances because they were critical for the episode.

While a lot of celebrities on SVU had roles before they were famous, for some, their time on the show came after they were household names. Alec Baldwin, Cynthia Nixon and Carol Burnette all appeared on the show long after they were already famous, giving their episodes an extra level of intrigue for a show that thrives on uncertainty. That unpredictability has made SVU one of the most enduring thriller TV series with celebrity guest stars ever made.

Whether it’s the procedural intensity of Law & Order: SVU, the chaotic horror of American Horror Story, or the playful mystery of Only Murders in the Building, these series understand that celebrity guest stars can elevate suspense rather than undermine it. In an era crowded with streaming content, these shows stand out by combining gripping storytelling with unforgettable performances—proving that sometimes, the most thrilling twist is seeing who shows up next.

Justin Hartley Jokes He ‘Used to Have a Life’ Before Tracker

Published

on

Being responsible for a successful show such as Tracker comes with its challenges — and has kept star Justin Hartley too busy.

“He lives and breathes Tracker,” Hartley’s costar Fiona Rene exclusively told Us Weekly at CBS Fest on Wednesday, April 15. “We were joking around the other day. He was like, ‘I used to have a life. I used to have friends.’”

Rene praised Hartley’s devotion to his job.

“What I’ve learned specifically is his attention to detail while we’re shooting,” she added. “Not only is he at home reviewing the scenes and making sure that he feels good about everything and coming to set and doing his role, but he comes in as his executive producer and goes through and says, ‘Wow, this moment didn’t feel right on your seat. Let me talk to you about this. Let me feel this out.’ He’s very, very generous.”

Justin Hartley‘s Tracker costars have often spoken about their experiences working with him as the hit CBS series lost several cast members. After becoming a household name with roles in Passions, Smallville, The Young and the Restless and This Is Us, Hartley scored a major career success with Tracker. The show, which premiered in February […]

Tracker, which premiered in February 2024, follows survivalist Colter (Hartley) as he travels the country to help find missing people, track down information on criminal cases and more. Hartley reflected on the show’s overnight success in a recent interview with Men’s Journal.

“One of the things I really love about Colter and the way we’ve built him is that he doesn’t apologize for his masculinity,” Hartley said in August 2025. “I think that’s what people are looking for. You’re asking yourself, ‘What kind of people do I want to hang out with?’ And particularly: ‘What kind of male friends do I have in my life that I really value?’”

The actor was thrilled with the example Colter sets on the show.

“I think we’ve crafted a character that is so emotionally evolved, and he really does want to get to the root of why people do things,” Hartley continued. “The facts are that [executive producer] Ken Olin and I set out to do a show that was in fact a throwback. We wanted a new spin on a procedural, meaning our character would evolve over time.”

Hartley added: “He would not just remain the same exact person every single week. We were hopeful people would like it. People ended up loving it. I think there’s a huge appetite for this kind of show.”

Hartley also hinted at how far the show will push his character.

“I just love that when you watch a show like that and you tune into season 1 and then you tune into the last season, you see the development of the character and you go, ‘Wait a minute, are they playing different roles?’ But then if you watch it throughout the years, you experience those things with the characters,” he told TV Insider in September 2024. “As competent and confident as Colter is, I don’t at all think for a second that he doesn’t have a ton to learn, especially about himself and his family and all that.”

He continued: “Going forward, I think that will be how the show lives on a long runway, is that we keep developing this character and he becomes better at what he’s doing. He’s a restless man, and for an audience member, at least shows that I love to watch, you love to see that growth of a character and we have that.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at the Project Healthy Minds World Mental Health Day Gala

Meghan Markle is facing criticism after her short appearance at a high-priced wellness retreat left some attendees questioning what they paid for. The Duchess of Sussex attended a luxury event at the InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach on Friday, where tickets reportedly exceeded $3,000. However, despite the weekend-long marketing, Meghan Markle was only on-site for about two hours.

The “Her Best Life” retreat offered multiple ticket tiers, with prices reaching as high as $3,199 per person. According to the official website, the experience was marketed as a luxury weekend designed to bring women together for “powerful conversations, relaxation, laughter, and unforgettable experiences.”

Attendees who purchased the higher-tier package were promised perks like a group photo with Markle, a VIP gift bag, and premium accommodations, while standard packages included shared lodging and full weekend access.

Markle arrived alongside Prince Harry at approximately 5 p.m. local time before departing just 120 minutes later in a luxury Range Rover. During her time at the retreat, Markle participated in a Q&A session alongside “Her Best Life” podcast co-host Gemma O’Neill, who organized the event with co-host Jackie Henderson.

While speaking to attendees, Markle opened up about her public life, describing it as “very hard,” while also reflecting on the “amazing moments” she’s experienced since meeting Harry in 2016, including their marriage and growing family.

According to reports, Markle was paid $150,000 for her appearance.

Fans weren’t exactly thrilled, with many pointing out they shelled out thousands of dollars only for Markle to make a brief, two-hour appearance. “She charged $3,000 to spend 120 minutes with them,” one X user wrote.

“Why did Meghan Markle not even share a meal with women who had paid $3000 to spend ‘retreat’ time with her?” another asked. “How is that kind?”

Despite the backlash, Markle’s team insists there was no confusion about her role at the event. “Meghan was always confirmed only to attend the retreat for her Q&A portion of the weekend,” Markle’s rep told Page Six in a statement. “She had a lovely time sitting down and talking to Gemma in front of such an engaging audience.”

Promotional materials for the retreat also described Markle as a “special guest,” highlighting an in-person Q&A as the main attraction rather than a full weekend appearance.

The latest criticism arrives just as Markle and Prince Harry are once again opening up about the pressures they’ve faced in the public eye. During a recent appearance in Australia, the couple spoke candidly about their experiences navigating royal life and intense scrutiny. Meghan previously claimed she “was the most trolled person in the entire world,” while Harry reflected on the emotional toll of growing up in the spotlight.

Speaking at the InterEdge Summit in Melbourne, Harry looked back on the aftermath of losing his mother, Princess Diana, in a tragic car crash when he was just 12 years old. “After my mum died just before my 13th birthday, I was like: ‘I don’t want this job. I don’t want this role, wherever this is headed, I don’t like it,’” he said.

“It killed my mum and I was very much against it, and I stuck my head in the sand for years and years,” he continued. “Eventually I realized, well, hang on, if there was somebody else in this position, how would they be making the most of this platform and this ability and the resources that come with it to make a difference in the world?”

Meghan chimed in, expressing how “every day for 10 years, I have been bullied and attacked. And I was the most trolled person in the entire world, man or woman.”

In the years that followed, the pair have been outspoken about what led to their exit, pointing to a mix of intense tabloid scrutiny, online harassment, and deeper institutional issues.

Brooke Hogan has been very open regarding her estrangement from her father, Hulk Hogan, prior to his death and her decision to remove herself from his will. Now, however, as the one- year mark of his death nears, she appears to have a different take on the matter.

In a recent interview, the former reality star discussed why she “regrets” the move, and what she wishes she could do differently.

Per TMZ, during an appearance on the “Hollywood Raw” podcast, to promote her current stint on the latest season of the HGTV hit competition series, “Rock the Block,” Brooke Hogan shared insight into her previous decision to remove herself from Hulk Hogan’s will back in 2023, two years before his July 2025 death.

“I regret that decision,” Brooke revealed. “Not because of the money, I’ve never been about the money, but because now I don’t have a seat at the table.”

She also shared that her decision was based on fearing for her safety due to the people her father had in his inner circle, which she previously stated was a reason for their estrangement.

“There were situations that had me so scared,” the mother of two said. “I really took myself off the will because I was actually scared for myself, my family, my safety. There’s not enough money in the world that would matter with what I felt I was facing.”

In September 2025, two months after Hulk Hogan’s death, Brooke revealed that although she was left out of his will and cut off from his multi-million-dollar estate, it was at her request.

“It’s what I asked for, I stand by it with no regrets. My dad knows I’m a hard worker, and I have been surviving without his money for a long, long time,” she said at the time.

However, she did express her concern for ensuring her father’s estate, intellectual property, and trademarks are handled responsibly. Per TMZ, her focus has never been on financial gain, but on wanting more of her father’s “time, honesty, and love.”

In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly on April 13, Brooke opened up about how Hulk Hogan’s inner circle led her to decide to distance herself from her father two years before his death.

“He said, ‘You go this way, I go that way,’” she told the outlet. “That hurt. I could see what was happening with him with the people around him. I could also see his potential and see how life could be. And he just wasn’t there. I was pregnant with my twins. I was newly married. I just had to take a break.”

She continued, adding: “I don’t know if we would have ever reconnected, even if he were alive, because of the mindset he was in. He would have had to have a change of mindset and a change of company. I don’t know if he was there. I don’t know if he was willing to do that.”

“I’m glad he’s out of pain. I know he was in a lot of pain,” the singer said of her wrestling legend father. “In a weird way, I feel like I have a better relationship with him now. I find myself just talking to him and saying all the things I wish I could have said.”

She continued, “He was kind of tough. It was hard to have tender moments with him because he just didn’t want to talk about it.”

Ruby Rose’s Essay Resurfaces After Katy Perry Claim

Ruby Rose Speaks On 'Draining' Living Conditions In America And What She Loves About Being Back In Australia

Ruby Rose has made serious allegations against Katy Perry, claiming that the pop star sexually assaulted her when she was in her early 20s while they were at a Melbourne nightclub. Now, an essay that the Australian actress wrote after the alleged incident has resurfaced, adding more details about what happened on the night in question.

Ruby Rose Talked About Her Sobriety

In 2011, Ruby Rose wrote an essay for the Australian outlet news.com.au, where she talked about sobriety. At one point, she detailed the night she partied with Katy Perry in 2010, revealing that she was 30 days sober at the time.

“I had been off the grog for 30 days — my first attempt at sobriety — and I was out partying with Katy. What I do remember thinking was: ‘I’ll have a drink tonight, I deserve one. I mean, what’s the worst that could happen?’” Rose wrote.

However, she didn’t stop at one drink and ended up “vomiting on Katy’s foot,” adding that she lost her keys and dignity that night. “I don’t normally spew (I don’t know why, I just don’t), so clearly the universe wanted to punish me,” she wrote.

The Actress Said Nothing ‘Horrific’ Occurred

Rose wrote that the night she partied with Perry was one of the reasons why she decided to be sober again, revealing that she hadn’t had alcohol in almost 90 days at the time the essay was written. “Before you jump to conclusions, nothing horrific happened, nor have I been hit with a DUI – but I just had enough, and it has been one of the best decisions of my life,” Rose continued.

The “Orange is the New Black” actress has been open about her sobriety, revealing that alcoholism runs in her family. In 2013, she told The Sydney Morning Herald, “I was getting sick because I have depression, so it wasn’t doing me favours in that department. As soon as I quit I felt happier.”

In 2016, Rose was removed from a restaurant after “having a tantrum,” but she defended herself, saying that she threw fries at a server after he made “repeated and derogatory jokes” about her sobriety. She regretted her actions but said, “Maybe next time I won’t throw fries, then again, maybe next time that bartender won’t tell someone who is sober to ‘go call your f-cking sponsor.’”

Ruby Rose’s Allegation Against Katy Perry

Threads | Ruby Rose

In April, Rose commented on Threads, alleging that Perry sexually assaulted her at a nightclub in Melbourne, as reported by The Blast. When users prompted her to share what happened, Rose wrote that she threw up on the singer and had previously talked about the story in public but made it out to be a “funny little drunk story.”

One user referenced Perry’s song, asking Rose, “She kissed a girl and you didn’t like it?” She responded by claiming that while she was resting on her friend’s lap, Perry allegedly rubbed her private part on her face until she “projectile vomited.” The actress claims that there were witnesses to the incident who could corroborate her story, adding that she has photos to back her story.

Katy Perry Is Under Investigation

Following Rose’s claims, she filed a formal complaint, saying, “I imagine they are past their statute of limitations, but all the more reason to try.” She then posted an update on Threads to tell her followers that she has finalized the report and will no longer be able to publicly talk about the issue due to the ongoing investigation. “I can start the healing process now. And temporary [sic] move forward. I love you all so much,” Rose wrote.

On April 15, detectives from the Melbourne Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation department confirmed that they are investigating Rose’s claim, but said that no further details will be released while they are looking into the situation.

A representative for Perry has addressed Rose’s sexual assault claim, denying that it happened. “The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous, reckless lies,” said the rep, adding that the Australian actress has a history of making allegations on social media.

According to Rose, she didn’t come forward sooner because she was “too wounded and afraid.” She also admitted that Perry helped her obtain her U.S. visa, prompting her to keep the alleged incident a secret, until now.

Jacob Elordi’s Blunt ‘Euphoria’ Comments Resurface

Jacob Elordi at Frankenstein Red Carpet In Venice Lido, Italy

In resurfaced comments about how “Euphoria” is filmed, Jacob Elordi did not sugarcoat things.

As fans dive into the new episodes of the long-awaited Season 3, the actor’s previous remarks have offered a rare glimpse into how the series comes together.

Elordi, who plays troubled high school football player Nate Jacobs, revealed that scripts were not always fully fleshed out. In a blunt assertion, he compared the experience to “throwing sh-t at the wall and seeing what would stick.”

As chatter around “Euphoria” ramps back up, one detail from Elordi’s past interview is catching fresh attention… and raising eyebrows.

Speaking months before the Season 3 premiere, Elordi revealed that scripts weren’t always fully mapped out during filming, with pages sometimes coming in day by day. That meant he had to lean heavily on instinct, filling in emotional and narrative gaps for Nate in real time.

Now that the new season is finally out, that admission is landing differently. On Reddit, fans picked apart the approach, with some calling it “really weird,” while others floated more practical explanations, including tighter leak control or last-minute rewrites.

That latter theory has also pulled creator Sam Levinson into the conversation, with some viewers speculating he may have been adjusting scenes on the fly.

The Actor Said Limited Prep Time Shaped His Performance

In the same interview, Elordi also opened up about how little time he had to prepare before stepping into scenes, a stark shift from the more methodical process he’d relied on in past roles.

“I had no time to get ready for it,” he said. “And I didn’t have scripts in any full sense. I sort of just had creative conversations with Sam, so I had no choice.”

That lack of preparation ended up working in his favor, however. Without a fully structured script to dissect, Elordi leaned into instinct, approaching scenes with a far more experimental mindset.

“Because I had no choice, I got to be free in the acting process, ’cause it was kind of just throwing sh-t at the wall and seeing what would stick,” he explained.

Jacob Elordi Remains Deeply Connected To His ‘Euphoria’ Character

Long before Euphoria expanded into multiple seasons, Elordi had already made it clear just how complex he found Nate to be.

Speaking with WMagazine in 2021, the actor didn’t hold back, describing the character as “an emotional terrorist, a narcissist, a sociopath, a freak.”

Years later, that connection hasn’t faded. Despite Nate’s darker traits, Elordi says stepping into the character has shaped him in unexpected ways, particularly in understanding perspectives far removed from his own.

“I love him,” he said. “I act to understand a different experience, to express an experience that’s different to my own. Playing him taught me a lot about empathy and patience, which is strange with a character like that.”

Elordi Says Playing Nate Jacobs Changed How He Sees People

Reflecting on what he’s taken from the role, Elordi said portraying Nate in “Euphoria” has given him a deeper lens into human behavior. This perspective is one that the actor believes more people could apply in everyday life.

The rising A-lister explained that the process of studying and breaking down a character at that level is a rare privilege, but also a useful exercise beyond acting. In his view, approaching real-life relationships with the same curiosity could lead to better understanding, whether it’s with people close to us or even strangers online.

“If we could all sort of just approach those relationships like an actor breaking down a character, I do think that we’d have a little bit more calm in the world,” Elordi said. “I can look at everything that he does and maybe not understand it, but I can at the very least empathize.”

Steven Spielberg Drops Ominous ‘Disclosure Day’ Hint

Steven Spielberg on the red carpet

Steven Spielberg is gearing up to unveil his latest extraterrestrial sci-fi project, and his latest remarks about the film suggest it may hit closer to home than audiences expect.

Speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, the director said the movie will be “more truth than fiction,” adding that it will leave audiences with answers, but also a few lingering questions. He also used the moment to urge studios to keep films in theaters longer and invest more in original storytelling.

Steven Spielberg Reveals ‘Disclosure Day’ Is ‘More Truth Than Fiction’

Spielberg has built a decades-long reputation as one of Hollywood’s most influential filmmakers, with a catalog that spans everything from historical dramas to sci-fi classics. Now, the director is returning to extraterrestrial storytelling with his latest project, “Disclosure Day.”

Set to hit theaters in June, the film has become one of the most anticipated releases of 2026. Speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Spielberg offered an early preview that has got people talking.

While he’s no stranger to the genre, the director made it clear this project takes a different approach. He described the film as “more truth than fiction,” suggesting it may lean heavily on real-world ideas, or at least widely discussed theories about extraterrestrial life, rather than pure imagination.

In his CinemaCon speech, Spielberg also revealed what drew him back to extraterrestrial storytelling for the first time in more than two decades.

The filmmaker pointed to a 2017 New York Times report detailing U.S. military pilots’ encounters with unidentified flying objects, noting that similar sightings have only grown more frequent since his last sci-fi outing, “War of the Worlds.”

Spielberg stopped short of revealing plot details, but made it clear the film isn’t aiming for tidy answers. “I really, truly believe this movie is going to answer questions,” he told attendees, before adding, “And this movie is also going to cause you to ask a lot of questions.”

“All you need to get from the beginning to the end is a seat belt,” he continued.

Ahead of its June debut, both a teaser and a full-length trailer have already been released for “Disclosure Day.” However, attendees at CinemaCon were also shown exclusive new footage that has not yet been made public.

The clip centers on Emily Blunt, who plays a local meteorologist. In the middle of a broadcast, her delivery abruptly falters before shifting into a string of unintelligible sounds, leaving those watching visibly unsettled.

Blunt is joined by a stacked cast that also includes Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, and Colman Domingo.

As a veteran filmmaker, Spielberg had more on his mind at CinemaCon than just promoting his latest project. He also used the moment to speak about preserving the theatrical experience that once defined how audiences engaged with films.

The director argued that movies should remain in theaters for longer stretches before moving to home platforms, praising efforts to extend exclusive windows. He pointed to moves by Universal Pictures leadership, specifically Donna Langley, to push theatrical runs out to around 45 days.

“Audiences will find what they want to watch, whether the films are big or small, but studios need to help us by greatly expanding the exclusive windows like Donna just did,” Spielberg said, per Variety.

Spielberg also used his time at CinemaCon to push studios toward investing more in original storytelling, warning that an overreliance on familiar franchises could wear thin with audiences.

“If all we make is known, branded IP, we’re going to run out of gas,” he said. “There is nothing more important than giving the audience visual stories, and they can be in any form, but we need to tell more original stories.”

The event also included a personal milestone for the director, who was honored with the one-time MPA America250 Award.
