Babylon 5 's Best Joke Can't Save One Of Its Worst Episodes

By Jonathan Klotz
| Published

Babylon 5 isn’t a sci-fi comedy; it’s a sci-fi epic, but the carefully crafted story is filled with small moments of comedy that cut the tension, usually thanks to Londo.  Tucked away in the Season 1 episode, “Grail,” is an amazing joke that directly pokes fun at alien abductions.

It has no impact on the rest of the episode and serves only to introduce the station’s judge, but a man suing the Vree, modeled after the famous “Grey Aliens,” for abducting his great-grandfather, is the kind of offbeat humor that sci-fi fans love.

Suing Over Alien Abductions

The Vree’s Legal Defense In “Grail”

As soon as “Grail” returns from the title sequence, viewers are dropped into the courtroom of Ombuds Wellington (Jim Norton), listening to Flinn (John Flinn, the episode’s director of photography and he directed multiple episodes, including “Grey 17 is Missing”) argue that his great-grandfather was abducted by the Vree for two days, and then, no one believed him, he couldn’t get a job and a he lost everything. That’s why Flinn is suing for damages. The Vree’s response is to draw a picture. Obviously frustrated, Wellington wonders why he always gets these cases.

The Vree are one of the most annoying races in the world of Babylon 5, thanks to their religious devotion to a Trickster God, justifying their prankster behavior. Turns out, that’s why they would abduct humans; they found it funny. We never find out if Flinn won his case against the Vree or not, but the thought that in the future, when humans are living alongside aliens, someone would sue over alien abduction is the type of absurdity no one expected from the war-torn political series.

The Search For The Holy Grail

Jinxo And Gajic In “Grail”

Flinn’s court case is the early high point of “Grail” which spends most of its runtime on Jinxo (Tom Booker), a station mechanic in debt to the gangster Deuce. Desperate to get out of debt, he picks the pocket of Aldous Gajic (David Warner), a strange man who came to the station as part of his quest for the Holy Grail. The two find themselves bonding after Gajic takes the downtrodden worker under his wing in lieu of banishment for thievery, with Gajic explaining that a dying man restored his will to live by passing on the quest for the Holy Grail to him.

In case you’re wondering, Sinclair (Michael O’Hare) doesn’t take the quest for the Holy Grail seriously, but Delenn (Mira Furlan), part of the Minbari religious caste, respects Gajic for being a truth-seeker. It’s an interesting character moment for both of them in an episode that’s otherwise completely devoid of the main cast. The way humans and Minbari view religion is very different, and it’s hard for any human to understand why it’s so important to Delenn, though, as viewers know, Sinclair would go on to understand the Minbari better than they knew themselves.

Great Shows Are Allowed To Have Bad Episodes

The Main Cast Don’t Have A Lot To Do In “Grail”

“Grail” sidelines the main cast to focus on Gajic, Jinxo, and Deuce, culminating in a firefight within the sub-basements between the gangsters and a security squad after a monster disguised as Ambassador Kosh is revealed as the source of the mindwipe murders. It wouldn’t be the last time that Babylon 5 would focus on side characters, but Season 5’s “A View From The Gallery” is one of the best of the series, while “Grail” is a dull slog.

Babylon 5 is still one of the best sci-fi shows ever made, even if it has some uneven episodes. The saga of Gajic and Jinxo was a one-and-done story, and now, the episode is still best remembered for the brief, 60-second joke about suing little grey aliens. It’s short, it’s hilarious, it fits within the world, and it’s the type of gag Star Wars would never make.

FBI Investigating New Footage of Possible Intruder Near Nancy Guthrie’s Home

Published

on

The FBI and Pima County police are reportedly investigating new footage of a possible intruder approaching a home near where Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, disappeared.

TMZ has obtained Ring camera footage that showed a goateed person approaching the front door of a home located 6.5 miles away from where Nancy lives in the Tucson, Arizona, area. The footage — which was apparently shot one week before Nancy’s disappearance — shows a person backing up to the door before turning around to seemingly tamper with a security camera.

The security video was reportedly recorded at 5 a.m. PT on January 23. The homeowner posted the footage on Ring’s Neighbors app and wrote that the alleged intruder rang the doorbell before ultimately fleeing when a dog started barking.

A law enforcement source connected to the Guthrie case told TMZ that the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI are aware of the footage and are actively investigating it. While there is no definitive link between this possible intruder and the suspect in the Guthrie case, both appeared to have similar facial hair. (Separate security videos showed that the suspect in the Guthrie case had visible facial hair even while wearing a ski mask.)

Nancy Guthrie‘s neighbor is speaking out after the FBI released surveillance footage of a possible subject amid the search for Savannah Guthrie‘s mother. “It was startling and a bit terrifying,” Laura Gargano, who has lived around the corner from Nancy, 84, for over a decade, told CNN on Wednesday, February 11. “But I immediately went […]

Us Weekly has reached out to law enforcement for comment.

An FBI spokesperson told Us: “The FBI does not provide comment on ongoing investigations.”

On Thursday, February 12, the FBI released an official description of the suspect as “a male, approximately 5’9” – 5’10” tall, with an average build. In [a newly-obtained security] video, he is wearing a black, 25-liter ‘Ozark Trail Hiker Pack’ backpack.” Federal officials confirmed they’d received 13,000 tips from the public related to Nancy’s disappearance — and were doubling their offer from $50,000 to $100,000 for any information that led to her rescue or recovery.

“Today, the FBI is increasing its reward up to $100,000 for information leading to the location of Nancy Guthrie and/or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance,” FBI Phoenix announced via X on Thursday. “New identifying details about the suspect in the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie have been confirmed after a forensic analysis of the doorbell camera footage by the FBI’s Operational Technology Division.”

The last known sighting of Nancy was in Tucson, Arizona, on January 31, when she had dinner with her family.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos previously confirmed that Nancy’s family placed a 911 call on February 1 when she failed to turn up to watch a church service with friends. A search and rescue investigation was initiated by the Pima police that same day.

President Donald Trump confirmed federal intervention in the case via Truth Social on February 4 when he announced that he was “directing ALL Federal Law Enforcement to be at the family’s, and Local Law Enforcement’s, complete disposal.”

“We are deploying all resources to get her mother home safely. The prayers of our Nation are with her and her family. GOD BLESS AND PROTECT NANCY,” Trump added.

On Tuesday, February 10, FBI Director Kash Patel released new surveillance photos and footage shot from Nancy’s security camera. The footage seemingly showed a masked person standing on Nancy’s porch and attempting to cover a camera.

“Over the last eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been working closely with our private sector partners to continue to recover any images or video footage from Nancy Guthrie’s home that may have been lost, corrupted, or inaccessible due to a variety of factors – including the removal of recording devices,” Patel announced via X. “The video was recovered from residual data located in backend systems.”

Following the release of these new images, Savannah assured the public that she and her siblings, Annie Guthrie and Camron Guthrie, were holding out hope that Nancy “is still alive.”

“Bring her home,” the Today host pleaded via Instagram on February 10.

On Wednesday, February 11, the NBC News journalist shared vintage home videos of Nancy via Instagram along with a message asking supporters to keep the faith.

Sarasota Shooting Suspect Brought 2 Guns, 5 Knives, More Weapons to Crime Scene

Published

on

Three days after multiple people were found killed in Sarasota and Fort Lauderdale homes in related shootings, police in Florida have revealed that the suspect showed up to the Sarasota residence with two handguns, five knives and other weapons.

Russell Kot, 51, is suspected of killing Larisa Blyudaya, 46, and Ben Azivov, 18, at a home in Fort Lauderdale before he traveled across the state to Sarasota and fatally shot Olga Greinert, 49, Florita Stolyar, 66, Anatoly Ioffe, 61, and Yaroslav Blyudoy, 39, at a home within a gated community.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office announced in a press release on Friday, February 13, that they learned Kot relocated from Illinois to Fort Lauderdale in the fall of 2025.

“He was living with Larissa Blyudoy, the daughter of Florita Stolyar, until the end of 2025, when the two separated,” the press release read. “A review of Kot’s cellular phone records did not reveal any apparent triggering event prior to the shootings involving Larissa or any member of her family.”

Additionally, police said that no records indicated that Kot previously stayed at Stolyar’s Fallcrest residence in Sarasota or cared for the family’s animals in the months leading up to the fatal shooting.

Investigators also confirmed that Kot had met Greinert, the family’s housekeeper, at least once before the incident.

A search warrant was executed on Kot’s vehicle, where authorities found two handguns, ammunition, five knives, rope, tape and an axe, according to the press release. The weapons in the car were found in addition to two handguns that Kot had on him when he entered the Fallcrest residence.

“Investigators have determined that after killing Olga Greinert and Yaroslav Blyudoy, Florita Stolyar’s son, Kot sent a suicidal text message to members of his family,” the press release said. “He then remained at the Fallcrest residence until Florita and her husband, Anatoly Ioffe, returned home. Upon their arrival, both were shot and killed. Kot then shot himself.”

Police added that Crime Scene Analysts recovered more than 20 shell casings inside the residences, and it was confirmed that each victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

The investigation into the case remains ongoing.

Everything We Know So Far About the Brown University Shooting

A manhunt was launched in Providence, Rhode Island, for the person who opened fire Saturday, December 13, on the campus of Ivy League institution Brown University, killing two students and wounding another nine. While a Wisconsin student was initially detained by cops as a “person of interest” in the shooting, that person was released, and […]

Deputies responded to the Fallcrest home around 12:30 p.m. on February 10. Once they arrived, authorities found a neighbor performing CPR on a male victim in the home’s front yard. The male victim was then moved to another location, where he was later pronounced dead.

Neighbors told responding officers that the man’s wife was potentially inside the home. They then entered the residence, where they found two women and two men that were dead.

As the Sarasota deputies tried to identify the victims and potential suspect, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department contacted them to say they were working on a double homicide. At the time, the Fort Lauderdale Police said they believed the Sarasota shooting was linked to their investigation.

After police confirmed via surveillance footage that Kot drove through the neighborhood in Sarasota, the two departments were able to piece together that he committed the killings in Fort Lauderdale before he traveled to the Fallcrest address.

5 Best New Movies to Stream This Weekend (February 13-15): Predator: Badlands and More

Finding true love is just as infuriating in the afterlife as it is when you’re still alive. That’s what Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) finds out in Eternity, a winning A24 rom-com that unsurprisingly doesn’t follow the typical rules of the genre. For starters, almost everyone in the movie is dead. That includes Joan and her husband, Larry (Miles Teller), whom she’s been married to for 65 years.

They find themselves in a purgatory where they have to choose how to spend eternity — and who to spend it with. When Joan encounters her first husband, Luke (Callum Turner), who died decades ago, she now must make an impossible decision: stay with the more familiar Larry or spend forever with a man who reminds her of the best years of her life.

I won’t spoil what happens, but I will reveal that Olsen, Teller and Turner are all great as the three participants in a very complicated love triangle. The movie will force you to pick which one Joan should be with — and even the possibility of Joan rejecting both men in favor of her best friend, Karen (Olga Merediz). Whatever happens, you won’t regret spending Eternity with a cast this charismatic and a premise too good to resist.

Is Adrianne Curry in America’s Next Top Model Documentary? Absence Explained

Published

on

Netflix will explore the most controversial moments from groundbreaking reality competition America’s Next Top Model in its new documentary Reality Check.

The three-part docuseries from American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden directors Mor Loushy and Daniel Sivan pulls no punches as it examines the way America’s Next Top Model changed the fashion industry — for better and worse. While ANTM unquestionably opened up the fashion world to a more diverse talent base, there have been accusations that its reality format was exploitative at times.

The filmmakers have secured interviews from many of the key figures involved in the making of ANTM, from creator and original host Tyra Banks and producer Ken Mok to former judges J. Alexander and Nigel Barker.

Numerous ANTM contestants — including winners Dani Evans and Whitney Thompson — will look back at the legacy of the show too but the original breakout star will be missing. Season 1 winner Adrianne Curry announced in January 2026 that she’d rejected an offer to reflect on ANTM through “a woke lens,” calling the concept of the documentary “absurd.”

Keep scrolling for more about Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model and why Curry refused to take part.

Why Isn’t Adrianne Curry in Netflix’s ‘America’s Next Top Model’ Documentary?

Multiple media outlets announced in May 2025 that America’s Next Top Model host Tyra Banks agreed to be interviewed for Netflix’s critical look at the series. Her involvement seemingly paved the way for many of the judges and contestants to take part in Reality Check too, though there was one notable holdout.

America’s Next Top Model season 1 winner Adrianne Curry confirmed in January 2026 that she had no intention of taking part in Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model.

“I am deeply grateful I won the first season of top model. I think people psychoanalyzing it over 20 years later with a woke lens is absurd,” she announced via X on January 26, 2026.

Curry argued that there was potential for any of the interviews to be manipulated to fit the filmmakers or Netflix’s agenda.

Tyra Banks Hosting Duties Through Years From ANTM to DWTS

Related: Tyra Banks’ Hosting Duties Through the Years

All she needs is her signature smize! Tyra Banks got her start as a model, but she is perhaps more well-known as a TV host in this day and age. The businesswoman took the world by storm when she kicked off America’s Next Top Model in May 2003. She not only served as a host and mentor […]

“I don’t trust people to not manipulate things I say for tv, so i decline everything,” she added. “Also, the public is cult-like and cruel, so the last thing I want is a bunch of eyeballs on me. I hope the other girls do not have their words twisted in their netflix show.”

The retired model described Reality Check as a possible “cover up fest” and expressed concern for any former ANTM contestants who agreed to be interviewed.

“I worry about the girls from my season who agreed to do it,” she warned.

What Has Adrianne Curry Said About ‘America’s Next Top Model’ in the Past?

Adrianne Curry has not been shy about criticizing America’s Next Top Model since her win in 2003. She claimed on the “Just B With Bethenny Frankel” podcast in June 2025 that she was the only winner of ANTM to be paid “zero dollars.”

“[I] was the only winner that won no money. Zero dollars. … There was no money in my win. I got a title,” she told host Bethenny Frankel.

Per Curry, America’s Next Top Model recruited contestants with the possibility of a Revlon campaign but never really followed through.

“[Tyra Banks] was telling us we’re gonna be this huge Revlon-like superstar, because I don’t think any of us would have fought as hard as we did for what the prize really was, which is the title,” Curry said. “So I always joke because people are like, ‘You still call yourself America’s Next Top Model?’ I’m like, ‘It’s the only f***ing thing I won.’ I’m gonna put it on my tombstone.”

Curry offered a different version of events to Entertainment Weekly in May 2023 when she said she was paid $15,000 to attend one Revlon corporate event.

“What I won was to go to Revlon corporate, sit in a back room, have a makeup artist put makeup on my face for a team of about seven people watching me. Who the f*** would fight as hard as we fought for that?” she complained.

Banks announced during the America’s Next Top Model season 1 finale that the winner would receive “a contract with Revlon, a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine and representation by top modeling agency Wilhelmina.” Curry confirmed she was given a contract with Wilhelmina, though that relationship allegedly soured when ANTM switched to rival modeling agency IMG in season 2.

“[The agents] wanted me to fail. They straight-up told me,” she alleged. “They were pissed off because Top Model made them a bunch of promises they didn’t keep because no agency wanted to be part of the show when it first came out.”

In response to Curry’s accusations, then-current Wilhelmina Vice President Ray Lata told Entertainment Weekly in 2023, “Twenty years ago, Wilhelmina had different owners and staff. Wilhelmina is now a public company. It seems unlikely there would be sufficient motivation to harm Tyra and not try to maximize a model’s earning potential.”

Curry also claimed that she still bears the physical effects of a disastrous makeover challenge from ANTM in 2002. In an October 2025 Instagram video, Curry blamed a botched hair weave on the show for leaving her “partially bald.”

“I wanted to discuss why I’m partially bald right here. The reason is, when I was on Top Model, Tyra Banks told them to put a weave in my hair. The Black stylists that were putting it in pulled her aside, and I heard them tell her, like, ‘This white chick’s hair is too fragile for this,’ and [Banks was], like, ‘Oh, no, no, just do it,’” she alleged.

Curry went on, “I had an oozing wound from the braids. Half my hair had been ripped out here. The little bit of hair that grows here, that’s it.”

The model alleged that ANTM’s hairstylists “didn’t even take the weave out” when filming wrapped so she “had to go to a Black salon in Illinois” to get the procedure reversed. Curry said that she was left with “horrific, moist scabs all over [her] head.”

“[The hair has] never grown, this entire area. It’s permanently damaged from that weave. It was so painful,” she recalled. “I was crawling out of my skin every second. All my friends were like, ‘Are you bald there?’ I think most of those makeovers were done just to torture us, honestly.”

Banks did not respond to Us Weekly’s request for comment at the time.

Despite her complaints, Curry told Entertainment Weekly in 2023 that she had no hard feelings toward Banks for the way her ANTM experience turned out.

“Tyra Banks learned to look out for Tyra Banks. She’s a product of her environment, and I don’t blame her,” Curry said. “For her to be as successful as she is, bravo. She didn’t owe me s***. I know there are a lot of bitter contestants. I’m not at all. I’m glad that happened: the good, the bad, the ugly, because it really molded my life.”

Who Is Interviewed in Netflix’s ‘America’s Next Top Model’ Documentary?

The most intriguing interview participant on Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model is Tyra Banks, who created the competition series and served as host for 23 of its 24 seasons. (Rita Ora came on board for season 23 but only lasted for a single cycle before Banks was brought back.)

“I haven’t really said much but now it’s time,” Banks slyly says in the trailer.

The supermodel insists in Netflix’s documentary that America’s Next Top Model was her way to “fight against the fashion industry” though she admits that the atmosphere on ANTM could be “very, very intense.”

“But, you guys [viewers] were demanding it, so and so we kept pushing more and more and more,” Banks explains in the show.

Former America’s Next Top Model creative director Jay Manuel and judges Nigel Barker and J. Alexander have given interviews for Reality Check, too. The trio will address the behind-the-scenes conflicts that led to them all being fired from ANTM in 2012. (A rebrand of the show for cycle 19 saw Banks joined by fashion blogger Bryanboy, model Rob Evans and designer Kelly Cutrone as judges, plus photographer Johnny Wujek as new creative director.)

“I realized Tyra would do anything for the success of her show,” Manuel alleges in the teaser.

Barker admits in the Reality Check trailer that he felt “betrayed” by his highly-publicized firing, whereas Manuel likened the divisive ANTM cycle 19 refresh to being “slapped across the face.”

Reality Check will include testimonials from numerous ANTM contestants and winners, including Whitney Thompson (season 10 winner), Dani Evans (season 6 winner), Giselle Samson (season 1 contestant), Shandi Sullivan (season 2 contestant), Keenyah Hill (season 4 contestant) and Shannon Stewart (season 1 runner-up).
