1942 was a year when Hollywood and world cinema were responding to global upheaval. The shadow of World War II hung over everything, and filmmakers were telling new stories about resilience, romance, suspense, and moral conviction. The best films of that year balanced wartime urgency with timeless human emotion, from shadowy noirs and daring political comedies to sweeping melodramas and animated masterworks.

These were movies that comforted, challenged, and inspired audiences in uncertain times, while advancing the craft of classical filmmaking. More than eight decades later, they still hold up.

‘This Gun for Hire’ (1942)

“I work alone. I always have.” In This Gun for Hire, Alan Ladd delivers a breakthrough performance as Philip Raven, a cold and methodical hitman betrayed by the employer who hires him. As Raven seeks revenge, his path intersects with nightclub singer Ellen Graham (Veronica Lake), who becomes entangled in a conspiracy involving industrial espionage and wartime intrigue. Their chemistry, wary, tender, and edged with distrust, established the stars as one of classic Hollywood’s defining duos. They would go on to collaborate three more times.

Director Frank Tuttle handles their intertwined stories with shadowy elegance, establishing many of the conventions that would define film noir. Visually, the movie embraces the stylistic hallmarks of noir: low-key lighting, deep shadows, urban nightscapes, and claustrophobic interiors. The shot framing frequently isolates Raven within stark compositions. All this amplifies the themes of identity and betrayal, which very much spoke to the day’s wartime anxieties.

‘Mrs. Miniver’ (1942)

“This is the people’s war.” That year’s Best Picture winner, Mrs. Miniver follows the everyday struggles of the Miniver family as they navigate air raids, separation, and uncertainty in an English village during World War II. At the heart of the story, Kay Miniver (Greer Garson) becomes a symbol of quiet strength, maintaining her household while supporting the war effort and caring for her loved ones. The star’s performance, for which she won the Best Actress Oscar, very much anchors the movie.

Released in 1942, as the United States had just entered the war, Mrs. Miniver served as a powerful piece of morale-building cinema. (Indeed, so much so that Joseph Goebbels considered it a formidable work of propaganda). Yet the film’s effectiveness lies in character, not rhetoric. Rather than glorifying conflict or big actions, it simply honors perseverance. The focus is on the family level, playing out against family dinners, village flower shows, and church gatherings instead of battlefields.

‘Now, Voyager’ (1942)

“Don’t let’s ask for the moon. We have the stars.” In Now, Voyager, Bette Davis is Charlotte Vale, a repressed woman dominated by her controlling mother. After undergoing treatment at a sanatorium, Charlotte emerges with newfound confidence and embarks on a transformative journey. Her encounter with a married man, Jerry Durrance (Paul Henreid), soon changes her understanding of independence and love. While certainly dated, Now, Voyager is nevertheless a solid study of personal awakening.

Davis’ performance is great. She charts Charlotte’s evolution with remarkable subtlety, convincingly going from hunched insecurity to poised self-assurance. Yet the story never settles for simple wish fulfillment. Charlotte’s romance cannot culminate in conventional happiness. Instead, the film embraces emotional maturity over fairy tale endings, which is a refreshing change of pace for a 1940s movie. Plus, this was also one of the earliest Hollywood depictions of psychotherapy, and it’s more grounded and realistic than one might expect for the era.

‘Yankee Doodle Dandy’ (1942)

“My mother thanks you, my father thanks you, my sister thanks you, and I thank you.” Yankee Doodle Dandy celebrates the life of entertainer George M. Cohan (James Cagney), tracing his rise from vaudeville performer to Broadway legend. We follow his career across musical numbers, personal struggles, and big contributions to American culture. Director Michael Curtiz infuses the movie with an exuberant energy befitting its subject. This fusion of spectacle, star power, and patriotism was well-suited to the mood of the moment.

This is polished studio-era craftsmanship: fluid camera movements, elegant lighting, and seamless transitions between backstage drama and stage performance. At the center of it all is Cagney, delivering one of the most electric performances of his career. Known primarily for tough-guy roles in gangster films, Cagney astonished audiences with his athletic dancing and boundless stage presence. His tap routines feel crisp and explosive, yet never mechanical. He won the Best Actor Oscar for his efforts.

‘The Pride of the Yankees’ (1942)

“Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” This one is a moving tribute to Lou Gehrig, who had passed away the year before. Gary Cooper stars as the baseball legend, and the film chronicles his journey from humble beginnings to sporting greatness. It delves into Gehrig’s career with the New York Yankees, his enduring partnership with his teammates, and his courageous response to the illness that ultimately ends his playing days. In other words, this is a fine balance of crowd-pleasing sports spectacle and smaller character moments.

While some sequences are overlong and repetitive, The Pride of the Yankees holds the audience’s attention thanks to the heartfelt romance between Gehrig and Eleanor (Teresa Wright). On the acting side, Cooper’s performance is fittingly restrained, almost modest. He doesn’t overplay the heroism. That understatement aligns with the film’s broader attitude: quiet strength over grandiosity. His climactic farewell speech lands precisely because it feels personal rather than theatrical.

‘To Be or Not to Be’ (1942)

“So they call me Concentration Camp Ehrhardt!” In To Be or Not to Be, a troupe of Polish actors in Nazi-occupied Warsaw becomes unexpectedly entangled in espionage when they help the resistance thwart a German spy. Led by the vain but resourceful Joseph Tura and his quick-thinking wife Maria, the group uses their theatrical skills to outwit occupying forces and protect crucial information. Their only weapons are disguises, impersonations, and quick improvisation.

In the process, director Ernst Lubitsch and his collaborators turn Nazi occupation into razor-sharp comedy without diminishing the horror beneath it. Even more impressive, they made this movie while that occupation was still underway. This satire of authoritarianism was daring, to say the least. Hitler and the Gestapo are mocked, reduced to bureaucratic buffoons. The humor is defiant. Beneath the laughter lies seriousness. The stakes are real. Characters risk torture and execution. All in all, the film balances levity and danger with remarkable tonal control.

‘Cat People’ (1942)

“She never could escape from herself.” Those who have only seen Paul Schrader‘s 1982 remake should check out Jacques Tourneur’s original. Cat People revolves around Irena (Simone Simon), a Serbian immigrant in New York who fears she is cursed to transform into a panther if she gives in to passion. Her marriage to Oliver (Kent Smith) becomes strained as jealousy and anxiety blur the boundary between imagination and reality.

Part of what makes Cat People an interesting horror for its time is what it refuses to show. For instance, the supposed transformation is never fully depicted. Instead, Tourneur uses shadowy lighting, off-screen space, and strategic editing to imply threat. The most striking example is the famous “bus scare” sequence, in which a sudden hiss of air brakes interrupts mounting suspense. Plus, the movie gets unusually psychological and symbolic, using its pulpy premise to explore themes of repression, desire, and alienation. Irena’s terror of her own desires gives the story emotional depth.

‘The Magnificent Ambersons’ (1942)

“Times change. People don’t seem to change as much.” The Magnificent Ambersons was Orson Welles‘ first feature after Citizen Kane, chronicling the decline of a wealthy Midwestern family at the turn of the 20th century. Young George Amberson Minafer (Tim Holt) grows up spoiled and arrogant, resisting the social and technological changes reshaping the world around him. Opposite Holt is a stellar Joseph Cotten as the warm Eugene Morgan. Welles crafts this into both a family saga and a meditation on progress, pride, and decline.

Visually, the film is astonishing. Cinematographer Stanley Cortez uses deep-focus photography and fluid camera movement to create immersive spaces. The most impressive moment aesthetically is the ballroom sequence, where the camera glides through conversations and dance partners in a single flowing movement. Despite studio interference that famously altered its ending, The Magnificent Ambersons remains powerful. Its melancholy tone anticipates later movie masterpieces about lost eras.

‘Bambi’ (1942)

“If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.” Bambi is one of those early Disney classics that feels truly timeless. The story is famous the world over: a young deer (voiced by Donnie Dunagan) growing up in the forest, experiencing friendship, love, and the harsh realities of nature. From playful early adventures to encounters with danger, Bambi’s journey becomes a coming-of-age story shaped by both wonder and loss. The scene where his mother is shot is one of the most heartbreaking in all of animation. The violence is never shown. A gunshot echoes. Silence follows.

The imagery here is simply fantastic. The backgrounds are soft watercolor landscapes inspired by European art, creating depth and atmosphere without overwhelming the characters. The forest feels alive: light filters through trees, snow drifts gently, leaves shimmer in the wind. And, most importantly, Disney’s animators studied live deer extensively, achieving unprecedented anatomical realism in movement.

“Here’s looking at you, kid.” In World War II-era Morocco, expat Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) runs a nightclub frequented by refugees and opportunists. When his former lover Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) arrives with resistance leader Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), Rick must choose between personal desire and moral responsibility. That choice, fundamentally love versus sacrifice, forms the emotional spine of the film. In this regard, Rick’s transformation from cynical isolationist to engaged participant mirrors broader wartime shifts in American identity.

Themes aside, the best part of Casablanca is the dialogue. The screenplay layers wit, melancholy, and political awareness seamlessly. Even supporting roles sparkle, especially Captain Renault (Claude Rains), whose sly opportunism gradually evolves into something resembling integrity. Crucially, the lines aren’t just flashy or gimmicky, but rooted in the characters and their psychology. Everything feels effortless while being meticulously constructed. Ultimately, Casablanca endures because it’s both specific to its historical moment and universally human.

GH Spoilers: Trina & Portia Get Close Again

Portia and Trina work to repair their bond. Portia’s pregnancy has Trina looking forward to being a big sister. Britt’s afraid she’ll never get her meds without Sidwell. She’s feeling defeated and doomed and by end of the month, Jason’s vanished and she’ll only have Lucas helping.

Justine Turner (Nazneen Contractor) and Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) have a hard time staying away from each other. I think Justine and Sonny won’t be able to resist after their night of passion.

Obrecht won’t listen to Nathan. Liesl’s not going to stop pushing the Maxie issue. She may think he’s addled because of seven missing years. Lucas could still be in danger. Pascal and Sidwell won’t think twice about killing Lucas if he’s turning Marco against them.

Jason exits by end of month. Steve Burton is back taping in June to be on-screen in July, likely for sweeps. Rumor has it he’s kidnapped but not by Sidwell—someone else. Lulu’s afraid of Maxie’s reaction to her and Nathan.

Hopefully, they can tell Maxie before someone else does. Willow thinks everything is falling into place, but it’s all going to blow up in her face.

On Wednesday, March 4th, Daniel Romalotti (Michael Graziadei) asks Cane Ashby (Billy Flynn) how he’s going to “turn things around” for Phyllis. Cane says Phyllis has a hollow victory because she’s lost her kids. Cane thinks Phyllis would stop this if Daniel, Summer Newman (Allison Lanier), and Lucy Romalotti (Lily Brooks O’Briant) were back in her life. Daniel asks for a guarantee on that.

Cane says Phyllis is heartbroken and needs their forgiveness. Daniel realizes Cane’s doing this because Victor kidnapped Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) and kids. Cane admits it and says Phyllis needs more in her life than Newman. Daniel says Cane’s wasting his time because his mom doesn’t care about them.

Daniel says forgiving Phyllis will just allow her to avoid feeling bad about what she’s done because she’s power hungry. Cane claims to get Phyllis’s pain because of his own kids. Cane asks Daniel to at least talk to Phyllis.

Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) has been MIA and Victor, Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott), and Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle) talk about it but then Nick shows up claiming his phone was off while he went to LA to get info on where Matt Clark’s (Roger Howarth) hiding but says he didn’t find anything. Matt’s gone off the grid since Victor took everything.

Y&R Spoilers: Nick Back from LA

Victoria and Nikki are happy Nick didn’t find Matt because they’re worried Nick would kill him and wind up arrested. Victor says Matt’s got the upper hand as long as they can’t find him. Nick asks for an update on Newman and Victor says Phyllis still has the company. Victoria says Phyllis is firing people very loyal to Newman family.

Nick says Cane didn’t deliver, so what’s the plan. Victor says he has a better plan and Nikki insists he tell them. Victor won’t tell them but says he should’ve done this from the start and it’s nothing to do with Lily.

Sally Spectra (Courtney Hope) is at Billy Abbott‘s (Jason Thompson) after they slept together and asks if she’s having second thoughts. Sally says she’s all in as long as Billy’s not lying. He promises he won’t. Sally says she’s okay with it and Billy says even if he loses Chancellor, he’d be there for her.

Sally Gives Billy another Chance

He tells Sally he won’t let her go. They toast to being a power couple. She tells Billy he hurt her when he left Abbottcom. Billy’s sorry and he felt like Sally hated him after he made deal with Cane. Sally says she felt abandoned. Billy owns his mistake.

Phyllis shows up to interrupt their makeout session. She tells Billy there’s a contract issue with Chancellor transfer. But Phyllis says Sally’s company is fine. Billy asks what’s up and if Phyllis is going to do him dirty like she did Cane—in fact, like how Cane did Billy.

Phyllis says things are fine, it’s just complicated since it’s a multinational company. She says Billy’s lawyers will thank her for fine tuning contract and leaves. He tells Sally something’s off with Phyllis. Billy calls and leaves Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) a message to call him. Victor texts Billy come to ranch ASAP.

Sally thinks Billy should ignore it. He can’t because something’s up with Phyllis, and Victor might know what it is. Billy says he’s gonna go see if he can get some information.

Young and the Restless Spoilers: Sharon Meets with Tessa

Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) tells Tessa Porter (Cait Fairbanks) she’s got her hands full between Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes) and Noah Newman (Lucas Adams) and Sharon wants to see Aria Porter-Copeland (Millie Ingle) and wanted to bring Mariah along but she said she’s not ready. Tessa says this isn’t a good idea for Aria. Daniel shows up and Tessa goes outside with him.

Daniel tells her about his chat with Cane and asks Tessa’s advice. She says if it was her, she’d give Phyllis another chance. Daniel wonders if Tessa would do the same if Mariah asks for another chance. Daniel wants to know if he could lose Tessa.

She tells Daniel she doesn’t know what she’d do. Tessa says Mariah’s had so many chances already. Tessa says Mariah doesn’t want her to forgive her and Tessa’s done fighting for them and is moving on. Daniel thinks he broke his mom’s heart.

Cane tells Phyllis that Daniel’s considering it but wants time. Phyllis wonders if Tessa might sway Daniel and says Cane should hurry and see her because Billy’s gonna get impatient. Cane vows to make it happen.

Young and the Restless: Matt Reaches Out to Nick

Nick catches Sharon up on his trip to find Matt. And Sharon wonders if somehow Matt left the country. Sharon thinks Matt will stay away to avoid arrest. Nick gets a text from Matt saying he’s sorry he missed him in LA.

Billy asks what Victor wants and he tells Billy he’s going to give back Chancellor by the end of the day. He says Victor’s crazy—that won’t happen. He tells Billy that they’ll never see Jack again if Billy doesn’t hand it over.

Thursday, March 5th: Jack Wakes Up as a Captive and Kyle Springs into Action

On Thursday, March 5th, Jack’s in for a rude awakening. Looks like he wakes up as a captive. Victor has Billy backed against the wall. Victor kidnapped Jack and unlike with Lily, it’s no bluff.

Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) and Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters) are horrified when Billy shows up and tells Diane and Kyle what Victor did and threatened they’d never see Jack again if he doesn’t give Victor back Chancellor. Kyle springs into action. I think he’ll ask Claire Grace Newman (Hayley Erin) for help. She’ll be furious with Victor.

Y&R Spoilers: Friday, March 6th: Diane Goes to Extremes and Phyllis Tries to Reconcile

On Friday, March 6th, Diane goes to extremes to find Jack. I’m sure Diane is terrified and desperate to find Jack. She might lash out at Victor and tell Nikki what her awful husband has done. This Jack kidnapping incident puts Nikki and Victor’s marriage to the test.

Jack’s world’s turned upside down. Getting kidnapped was not on his bingo card. Is Patty Williams (Stacy Haiduk) involved? We’ll see. Phyllis tries to reconcile with Daniel. Tessa softened him up for her and Cane was part of it.

Week of March 9th-13th: Lily Returns and Nikki’s Livid with Victor

During the week of March 9th through the 13th, Lily is back this month. Do Nate Hastings (Sean Dominic) and Devon Hamilton Winters (Bryton James) find her and bring her home? Matt wants revenge on Sienna but Nick’s a huge target also, as are Sharon and Noah.

Holden Novak (Nathan Owens) and Audra Charles (Zuleyka Silver) may get closer. Billy and Sally are doing great but if Billy doesn’t exchange Chancellor for Jack, then Sally will be upset, especially since Billy just told Sally that he’d be happy with her and without Chancellor and it’s getting put to the test.

Nikki’s going to be livid with Victor because of Jack’s abduction. Claire too. Daniel might forgive Phyllis. Billy, Diane, and Kyle frantically try to track down Jack. That’s your Young and the Restless early weekly spoiler outlook.

Former publicity maven Peggy Siegal once organized a dinner party for late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

“He was demanding, demanding, demanding to be invited all over,” Siegal, 78, told New York Magazine in a Wednesday, March 4, profile, recalling Epstein’s hopes to be invited to all the biggest parties. “He didn’t want to leave his house. He wanted everyone to come to his mansion so he could be in control, so he could manipulate his audience under this palatial roof where he lived. In order to look like the smartest person in the room, he had to be in his room.”

At one point, Epstein hosted a dinner party in honor of Andrew, now 66, at his New York City residence. Siegal, who said she had a “transactional” friendship with Epstein, further claimed that she didn’t want to help with the bash.

“I totally jeopardized my relationship with all these important people — they did not know who [Jeffrey] was,” she claimed to the outlet of curating the star-studded guest list. “All of Jeffrey’s illegal, immoral behavior was in Palm Beach, and he went to jail in Palm Beach, and the New York Times never wrote about him. … World-famous newscasters didn’t know who Jeffrey Epstein was, and they counted on my relationship with them to invite them to an interesting evening, which I had many, many times before. They came on my say-so.”

According to Siegal, she only agreed to throw Epstein’s party for Andrew to help put a copy of one of producer Harvey Weinstein’s films into Queen Elizabeth II’s hands. (Andrew was one of the sons of the late queen of England, who died in 2022 at age 96.)

The 10-person dinner allegedly featured guests such as Charlie Rose, George Stephanopoulos, Katie Couric, Chelsea Handler and Woody Allen, who mingled with Andrew while eating lasagna.

“They were told that there would be no palace guards around Andrew at dinner,” Siegal recalled. “They could ask him anything they wanted to know about [Prince William and Princess Kate Middleton’s 2011] wedding.”

According to the former publicist, Allen, now 90, only agreed to come because he was apparently told that he “could wear his chinos and his bucket cap.”

“I don’t think he would have come if he knew who Jeffrey was,” she speculated.

Epstein was found guilty of sex trafficking of a minor and conspiracy to transport minors with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity in a 2019 federal jury trial. He died by suicide at 66 that year while incarcerated at New York’s Metropolitan Detention Center.

Andrew’s association with Andrew, meanwhile, resurfaced in fall 2025 when the FBI released the “Epstein Files,” which included images of the two men together and their email exchanges. Upon the documents’ release, Andrew voluntarily gave up his HRH honorifics.

“In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family,” Andrew said in a statement shared with Us Weekly in October 2025. “I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.”

Andrew was arrested in February for alleged misconduct in public office, where he was accused of sharing confidential intel with Epstein when he served as a U.K. trade envoy. The former prince has not addressed the accusations.

Tennis champ Aryna Sabalenka knows a thing or two about love with boyfriend Georgios Frangulis by her side.

“His support means so much to me,” Sabalenka exclusively told Us Weekly in June 2025. “Being on the road and having him support me, to make me laugh and to be able to work out together, makes life on the road feel more like home.”

Frangulis frequently cheers on Sabalenka at many of her international tennis matches, including the US Open and Wimbledon.

“Traveling is hard on most people, athletes or not,” she added to Us. “The time changes, the changes in eating habits and lack of hydration makes feeling your best difficult. As an athlete, this is even more important as our performance needs to be at its best and we travel often.”

Sabalenka met Frangulis after she was named an ambassador for his Oakberry company.

“Oakberry is more than just an açaí brand, we are a lifestyle brand dedicated to aligning our partnerships with the interests and passions of our target consumers,” he said in a press release. “Because of this, we’re becoming more integrated with the most exciting sports and the world’s best athletes. Aryna Sabalenka is a great example of the future of tennis and we are working closely with her to create some really exciting things over the years.”

They first connected during one of their joint business meetings about the partnership.

“We signed the contract, then we got to know each other,” Sabalenka later told The Guardian in an August profile. “Somehow, we ended up being together.”

When Sabalenka was introduced to Frangulis, she was in a relationship with hockey player Konstantin Koltsov, who died in March 2024 at the age of 42.

April 2024

Sabalenka and Frangulis were first spotted together after she played in the Mutua Madrid Open. Within months, the Brazil native stepped out to watch Sabalenka play in both the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open.

July 2024

The couple made their Instagram debut when Frangulis uploaded a handful of joint pics onto his account.

Months later, in September, Frangulis captioned a kissing pic, “I’m in love with the Queen of NY,” after her US Open victory.

Sabalenka returned the favor in time for her boyfriend’s birthday.

“Happy birthday meu amor, I’m so lucky to have you by my side,” Sabalenka wrote via Instagram, sharing pics of them at her tennis matches. “Your support is priceless.”

July 2025

Ahead of Sabalenka’s US Open return, she and Frangulis jetted off to Greece for a romantic vacation.

“The sweetest summer,” she wrote via Instagram on July 19.

September 2025

Sabalenka defended her US Open women’s singles title, sealing her victory with a kiss from Frangulis.

March 2026

Sabalenka and Frangulis announced their engagement with a slew of posts via Instagram. In one carousel, photos show Frangulis down on one knee, popping the question to a clearly surprised Sabalenka.
