Before ‘Highlander,’ Henry Cavill’s Forgotten Fantasy Epic Is Officially Back on Streaming
Henry Cavill is a man who’s very familiar with a sword and a shield, and he’ll be doing it again soon enough as Connor MacLeod in Highlander, but that won’t be the first time he’s done so. This is a man who loves battling legendary warriors and ancient gods. More than a decade before Chad Stahelski’s reboot, Cavill headlined another epic fantasy blockbuster that arrived right at the height of Hollywood’s mythology craze.
Immortals, which has recently been charting globally, sees the ruthless King Hyperion rampage across Greece in search of a weapon powerful enough to destroy mankind, but doesn’t realize that a humble stonemason named Theseus has been chosen by Zeus to lead the fight against the merciless king. With the fate of humanity hanging in the balance, Theseus must embrace his destiny and become history’s greatest hero in an unforgettable battle between gods, men and Titans.
As Hyperion tears across Greece searching for the legendary Epirus Bow, Theseus must embrace his destiny alongside an unlikely band of allies while the Olympian gods watch from above, forbidden from directly interfering in mankind’s affairs. The film is shot in similar fashion to 300, Zack Snyder‘s iconic (or all-style-no-substance) retelling of the Spartans’ final stand, and it does end up providing some of the most visually distinctive action sequences of the 2010s.
The film stars Cavill as Theseus, Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) as King Hyperion, Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire) as Phaedra, Stephen Dorff (True Detective) as Stavros, Luke Evans (Dracula Untold) as Zeus, John Hurt (Doctor Who) as the Old Man, Isabel Lucas (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) as Athena and Kellan Lutz (Twilight) as Poseidon.
Was ‘Immortals’ a Success?
Immortals seems like one of those movies that was probably a box office bomb, but it was actually something of a surprisingly respectable commercial success. The film grossed $226.9 million worldwide against a budget of around $75 million. However, the critical reception was something else. It holds a 50% Rotten Tomatoes score, with reviewers praising Tarsem Singh’s remarkable visual style while criticizing aspects of its storytelling. Even so, audiences have continued to embrace the film as an underrated spectacle, particularly as Cavill’s star has risen over the past decade.
Immortals is currently streaming on Prime Video in the United States. It is also available to rent or purchase digitally through Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and Google Play.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is addressing the political “backlash” she is receiving after going public with her decision to freeze her eggs.
“One question that I received earlier is do I regret coming out publicly about this due to all of the political negativity and the larger political context, and especially this idea that, for me, I’m quite young in my career — especially when it comes to politics — so would the backlash around this have any future impact on my career and do I regret it for those reasons,” Ocasio-Cortez, 36, said in a video shared via her Instagram Stories on Saturday, August 15.
“And the answer to that simply is — no. I was born a woman. Period,” she continued. “And I have no control over that, and I wouldn’t want to change that. And the way I feel is any negativity or judgement that I would receive at any point is negativity that I would receive for being a woman whether I shared this information or not, and so I might as well help others.”

Ocasio-Cortez, considered a potential future frontrunner for the Democratic party’s presidential nominee, has since received a slew of backlash from conservative Republicans and right-wing internet personalities for her choice to freeze her eggs and decision to share the journey publicly.
On Saturday, the congresswoman said that, unfortunately, she is used to the endless and often sexist and misogynistic scrutiny she’s endured since entering office in 2019. (The congresswoman became the youngest woman ever elected to the House of Representatives after defeating Republican nominee Anthony Pappas.)
“Another element of this as well is that ever since I was 28 years old, when I first won my primary largely unexpectedly to the national media, I have been subject to personal scrutiny and dissection ever since — for years,” she explained. “And it’s no secret to anyone that it’s been done in a way that is just simply not something that my male colleagues have been subject to, and when you go through that level of national scrutiny the first time it can be very unsettling. But I’ve gone through this so many times and for so many years — and it’s not to say that it’s fair, or right, or isn’t hurtful – but I have the privilege of being more resilient to this kind of negativity than someone going publicly that hasn’t.”
She added, “And what I find interesting, I think, sometimes with this negativity is that a lot of people think that, you know, who engage in it, they think that there’s no issue with them engaging in discourse about me, but when I take control of my life and I participate in that discourse and I open it proactively for people and shape it in a way that creates community and space for other women in a similar position — and other people in a similar position and other couples in a similar position – to feel less alone, that’s when people have an issue. It’s fine if I’m just being subject to it, but once I participate in it that’s when people get upset.”

It doesn’t matter whether the series focuses on complicated and compromised detectives investigating a deranged serial killer or an ordinary man’s descent into the corruption, violence, and power of the drug trade, the wicked immersion in human evil is compelling to say the least.
Ranging from monumental smash hits of network television to streaming sensations, novel adaptations, and even underrated cult classics, these crime TV series all excel at delivering stories that grow increasingly dark with each passing episode. Striking a balance between entertainment value, thematic depth, and confronting bleakness, these shows stand not only among crime television’s best titles, but among its most addictive and impressionable as well.

‘Sharp Objects’ (2018)
One of HBO’s most criminally underrated series in the past decade, Sharp Objects combines a gruesome murder mystery with nuanced and piercing character drama while capturing a mesmerizing atmosphere of Southern Gothic eeriness. Based on Gillian Flynn’s novel, it unfolds as a crime reporter, still recovering from her own issues of abuse and addiction, travels to her hometown to investigate the murder of two young girls. As she wrestles with the increasingly disturbing crime, she must also confront re-emerging demons from her childhood.
Powered by Amy Adams’s outstanding lead performance, Sharp Objects never loses grasp of its dramatic might even as the intricacies of the case and the intensifying family conflict continuously deliver shocking twists and turns. With a final scene that is sure to leave all who view it in a state of petrified dissonance, Sharp Objects grows darker and bolder as each episode pries deeper into Camille’s traumatic past and how it clashes with the violent atrocity she is investigating.

‘The Wire’ (2002–2008)
Given that The Wire starts as a brutally realistic descent into the Baltimore drug trade, it is difficult to say the series truly grows darker throughout its five-season run. However, it undeniably becomes increasingly hopeless and depressing as it drastically expands its scope to analyze the systemic issues in a vast range of societal institutions that plague the city, ranging from corruption in the police force to the shifting, self-interested priorities of city hall, and even to the ineffectiveness of the public school system.
While enrapturing, its tone is undeniably bleak, especially as it combines its all-encompassing scale and its penchant for authenticity with profoundly human characters. Seasons 4 and 5 do become particularly confronting as well, with the series expanding to explore the lives of school kids embroiled in the drug war and the career-minded immorality of journalism that reduces reporting crime in the city to an entertainment spectacle. As a whole, The Wire is one of TV’s most astonishing masterpieces and a quintessential viewing experience, but its relentless tonal intensity and cold realism do make it challenging to watch.

‘The Shield’ (2002–2008)
While it was underrated when it was airing, The Shield has come to be celebrated as one of the most absorbing and intense series of the 2000s. Produced by FX, it revolves around the Strike Team, a police unit operating in a crime-riddled region of L.A. under the command of Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis), who encourages the use of illegal and brutal methods to enforce the law while finding ways to profit from street crime.
Its first episode is renowned for its jaw-dropping ending that reveals the immorality and corruption of the Strike Team in no uncertain terms. The series only grows darker and more harrowing from there, delving into every detail of the main characters’ complex psyches of moral bankruptcy and self-justification while touching on their own personal dilemmas that range from familial dysfunction to issues with sexuality. Impressively, The Shield is at its darkest in its final season as the characters face dire consequences for their crimes, with its sense of real-world recompense painting a morbid portrait of justice in modern society as reputations and public image play a more significant role than punishing those who have done wrong.

‘Bates Motel’ (2013–2017)
As is the case with any spin-off of an all-time classic, Bates Motel is an intriguing combination of original ideas and respect for the original story, in this case, Alfred Hitchcock’s genre-defining classic, Psycho. Serving as a prequel, the five-season series follows Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) and his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga), in their murderous escapades as they manage the Bates Motel.
While earlier seasons feel misguided, viewing Norman and Norma as anti-heroes to a certain extent, the series does begin to indulge in its dark and twisted allure in time. It is no coincidence that as the series grows more depraved, it also becomes more transfixing and wickedly delightful. By Season 5, Bates Motel has bridged the gap between its lackluster opening and the events of Psycho to be one of the most psychologically twisted yet grotesquely absorbing treats of crime television as well as a hard-hitting highlight of small-screen horror.

‘True Detective’ (2014–Present)
While its exceptional first season is a clear standout of the anthology series, each installment of True Detective runs with a similar formula as they start vague and eerie before delving deeper into both the gruesome details of the crimes and the complexity of the detectives investigating them. Whereas many mystery shows start with a sinister inexplicability only to grow more comfortable and simpler as major clues are revealed, True Detective excels at only growing darker and more disturbing as new details of the crimes emerge.
Season 1 is perhaps the greatest example of this television has ever seen, a moody Southern Gothic slow-burn thriller that sees an occult killing expand into a web of corruption, power, and sexual depravity revolving around major figures in the Louisiana region. Ensuing seasons, while not quite as potent, are similarly adept at opening on an isolated crime that becomes tied to a wider conspiracy. Through not only the nature of the criminal actions, but the way in which the stories unfold as well, True Detective is brilliant at ensuring its unfurling mysteries grow increasingly darker with each episode.

‘The Fall’ (2013–2016)
Taking a completely original approach to a familiar crime premise, The Fall revolves around a police officer’s hunt for a serial killer in Northern Ireland. However, while Superintendent Gibson’s (Gillian Anderson) meticulous and often obsessive investigation of the case is a core focus of the series, so too are the experiences and plotting of the murderer, with Jamie Dornan co-starring as Paul Spector, a man launching violent attacks on professional women in Belfast while hiding under the guise of a harmless and ordinary family man.
The series’ unique approach imbues it with a piercing, energized air of dread and intrigue from the outset. Seeing how Spector plans and executes his killings only imbues Gibson’s investigation with a greater sense of urgency, and the series masters the art of extracting tension even when the audience knows far more about what is going on than the characters. By Season 3, The Fall is firing on all cylinders as a relentlessly suspenseful and viciously dark crime series powered by two outstanding lead performances.

‘We Own This City’ (2022)
Co-created by David Simon—the co-creator of the aforementioned The Wire—We Own This City is a sprawling and intricately layered descent into true crime as it examines the corrupt practices of the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Trace Task Force. Based on Justin Fenton’s nonfiction book, the six-part miniseries is framed as an FBI investigation into the unit’s illegal activities, with Sgt. Wayne Jenkins’s (Jon Bernthal) history with the squad as both a recruit and a commander being the major focus.
Its intense time-jumping narrative style does make it difficult to grasp on first viewing, but We Own This City excels as one of the most incisive and essential crime series of the past decade. Not only does it address the integral issue of police corruption with incredible depth and detail, but it also analyses America’s failed campaign in the War on Drugs, how trust between the public and integral social institutions has been dismantled, as well as the cultural issues that make combating police malpractice so difficult. With each episode broadening the story’s scope while deepening the examination of its core issues, We Own This City only grows bleaker and more damning as it goes on.

‘Ozark’ (2017–2022)
One of the most noteworthy television successes in Netflix’s brief history so far, Ozark toes a delicate line between ferocious crime drama and enthralling thrills throughout its gripping four-season run. A huge reason why the series works so well and maintains such a propulsive sense of momentum is its ability to constantly up the stakes while delving into darker and more unnerving threats surrounding the Byrde family.
It follows financial advisor Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) as a poor business decision from a partner lands him in debt to a Mexican drug cartel. When he conceives a plan to smuggle drugs into the country through the Missouri Ozarks and use local businesses to launder money, he and his family are sent to the region to oversee the criminal operation. Between clashing with local crooks, evading the clutches of law enforcement, and answering to the cartel, Ozark sees the Byrdes thrust on a relentlessly suspenseful and increasingly sinister journey of violent crime where any misstep could bring about a swift demise for the entire family.

‘Hannibal’ (2013–2015)
An astonishing feat of network television that was not appreciated enough when it was on the air, Hannibal broke new ground for free-to-air censorship with its ultra-stylized gore, violently twisty storytelling, and its pervasive air of darkness and dread. Based on characters created by Thomas Harris, the NBC series unfolds as Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), an FBI profiler with a unique ability to empathize with serial killers, works with the bureau’s Behavioral Science Unit on an active case. Due to concerns for Graham’s well-being, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) is assigned to monitor him.
In addition to its exceptional performances, gorgeous though gruesome production, and its creative dare, Hannibal soars through the complex evolution of the relationship between Graham and Lecter. By the third and final season, the series’ murder mystery component is playing second fiddle to its intimate focus on the depraved nuances and animosity of the two men’s bond. Growing darker in both a thematic sense and in terms of its creative fervor for explicit gore, Hannibal starts off deliciously depraved and only intensifies from there.

‘Breaking Bad’ (2008–2013)
One of the most famous arcs in television history, Walter White’s (Bryan Cranston) morbid descent from being a suburban family man and high school teacher to becoming a ruthless, cruel, and brutal crime lord makes for arguably the best story the small-screen has ever seen. It also makes for one of the darkest, with Breaking Bad’s tone drifting from thrilling entertainment to bleak and confronting character drama over the course of its five-season run.
While there are noteworthy milestones in Walter’s journey of corruption and amorality—from watching Jane (Kristin Ritter) overdose to actively poisoning a child to manipulate Jesse (Aaron Paul)—the series as a whole tracks his gradual decline in a linear fashion. Complimented by an abundance of volatile twists, plenty of passages of unbearable suspense, consistently magnificent performances from all involved, and Vince Gilligan’s uncompromised vision for the series, Breaking Bad excels as one of the greatest and darkest shows television has ever seen.

“A few peaceful moments from the hospital 🤍Incredibly grateful to the team at NYU Langone Health for their endless patience, care, compassion and kindness these past few days,” Serena wrote via Instagram on August 9, sharing a handful of post-op photos featuring her spouse. “Joe is 1786847358 home recovering, and we’re so grateful to have been in such good hands.”
Joe, who met Serena on season 7 of Bachelor in Paradise, announced in July that he was preparing to undergo the invasive procedure.
“So a little medical update. I didn’t share my Prenuvo [full body scan] results because they ended up finding a lesion in my brain,” Joe said in an Instagram video last month, revealing his health battle. “Then, I had to go get a brain MRI and there was a blueberry size lesion in my brain that looks to be a glioma, which is a tumor. I now need to get brain surgery next week to get it removed and get it tested.”
The former grocery store owner continued at the time, “And then we’re going to go from there. So it’s been a wild couple weeks. I definitely wasn’t expecting this. I think it’s one of those things where you’re like, ‘Oh, something like this will never happen to me.’ And here I am.”

Slipknot is confirming the iconic heavy metal band is no longer affiliated with DJ and keyboard player Sid Wilson amid rumors he was kicked out of the group.

The news of Wilson’s departure after nearly 30 years with the band comes just days after he reportedly referred to himself as a member. According to video shared via social media, Wilson, 49, cohosted the World Scratch Invitational earlier this week, in which he introduced himself a DJ from “the world famous Slipknot.”
“What’s up ya’ll, Sid, DJ Starscream/#0, from the world famous Slipknot, how ya’ll doing tonight,” Wilson told the crowd, per the footage.
The news also comes in the wake of his broken engagement to Kelly Osbourne, daughter of the late legendary rockstar Ozzy Osbourne.
On August 3, Kelly, 41, seemingly threw some very public and not-so-cryptic shade at Wilson accusing him of not taking “responsibility” for his alleged actions, though she did not elaborate any further.
“Strange how the loudest defense of the guilty is rarely innocence … It’s distraction,” she wrote via her Instagram Stories at the time. “When the mask slips, they don’t face the mirror they throw it at someone else.”
She added, “I also heard that when you break a mirror you get 7 years bad luck! Or is that just karma? This is why I always take accountability. As they say some are sicker than others.”

‘Slow Horses’ (2022–Present)
The British spy thriller Slow Horses has become a massive hit for Apple TV, earning countless nominations and awards. It’s already renewed through seven seasons, with the sixth scheduled to premiere in September 2026. Gary Oldman stars as Jackson Lamb, the grumpy lead of the Slough House department of MI5, where lackluster agents are sent to push papers instead of getting fired. When one massive case after another arises, however, they are unexpectedly given the chance to prove their worth.
The near-perfect Apple TV series is a fun flip on the traditional spy genre, praised for its fast-paced storytelling and incredible acting. The main characters are underdogs rather than typical heroes, with Lamb the antithesis of a charming James Bond type. You can’t help but love him anyway, however, as he speaks for the everyman, approaching the job his own way and poking fun at the very organization that employs him. It’s a wonderful story about outcasts rising up, and the short six-episode seasons make it an easy binge.

‘Hijack’ (2023–Present)
Admittedly, Hijack‘s first season is much stronger than its second, and the show probably should have ended with that. Nonetheless, Season 1 will draw you in and keep you at the edge of your seat the entire time. Most of the action takes place aboard a flight from Dubai to London, where lawyer and corporate business negotiator Sam Nelson (Idris Elba) becomes the de facto leader of the passengers when they discover the plane has been hijacked.
Sam figuring out who these hijackers are, what they want, and how to navigate the situation is what drives most of the plot. There’s also a parallel and connected storyline as those on the ground try to understand why communication has been lost on this plane and the best course of action to save the most lives. Seeing Sam put his negotiation skills to use in a way he never has puts Elba in the hot seat and makes him an expected hero. It’s tense, gripping, and a wild ride through the first seven episodes. Even if you don’t bother with Season 2, Hijack Season 1 is worth checking out.

‘Criminal Record’ (2024–Present)
In this British crime thriller, Peter Capaldi is veteran detective DCI Daniel Hegarty, and Cush Jumbo is rookie DS/DI June Lenker when an older murder case comes back into the conversation. Daniel wants to let sleeping dogs lie, and you can’t help but wonder why. But June’s passion for the job and suspicions about the case mean she won’t stop looking into the new evidence, presented by an anonymous phone caller.
Everything in Criminal Record comes together wonderfully, from the fantastic performances to the psychological tension and the not-so-subtle look at institutional corruption. It’s the type of story that has been told many times before, but the plot doesn’t fall into the usual good cop, bad cop dynamic, allowing for a much more nuanced story.

‘Sugar’ (2024–Present)
Colin Farrell is captivating in this neo-noir mystery drama with a huge twist revealed halfway through Season 1 that will throw you for a loop if you haven’t yet heard about it. He’s John Sugar in Sugar, a private detective in Los Angeles who is a quiet loner with a unique personality and a deep desire to help others.
Sugar presents with a lovely throwback old Hollywood aesthetic, a plot that intrigues you, and a lead character who’s so likable and magnetic that you can’t help but want to follow him along on his journey. The detective show subverts typical tropes, choosing instead to beat to its own drum. The story poses deep questions about the state of humanity, too.

‘Presumed Innocent’ (2024–Present)
A remake of the 1990 film of the same name, which is also based on the Scott Turow novel, Presumed Innocent takes the story in its own unique direction with a few unexpected twists. Jake Gyllenhaal plays Rusty Sabich, a prosecutor who finds himself on the other side of the courtroom when he is accused of committing a heinous murder.
The story develops into a steamy tale of affairs, lies, secrets, and vendettas. With a plot that keeps you guessing and a twist you won’t see coming, Presumed Innocent is a solid eight episodes of storytelling. With confirmation that a second season is coming, based on the Jo Murray book Dissection of a Murder, the legal thriller is perhaps one of Apple TV’s most underrated gems.

‘Your Friends & Neighbors’ (2025–Present)
Your Friends & Neighbors is a delightfully funny dark comedy crime drama about a wealthy man who resorts to thieving from his neighbors when he loses his job. He can’t work due to a non-compete and is desperate to continue keeping up with the Joneses. But in this new state of observing his so-called friends and the excess of material items they possess, Coop (Jon Hamm) develops a disdain for the very one-percent club to which he has long been a member.
The series, one of the greatest crime shows on Apple TV, is thoughtfully written, with Hamm’s narration of his character giving viewers an insider look at the absurdity of wealth. As Coop becomes drawn to the adrenaline rush and ups his theft game, he gets himself into increasingly dangerous situations. Your Friends & Neighbors is a show that oddly makes you sympathize with the criminal and despise the supposed victims in a way few other shows have managed to achieve.

‘Bad Monkey’ (2024–Present)
If you love Vince Vaughn, you’ll love Bad Monkey since he plays exactly the type of character you think he would. The Bill Lawrence black comedy crime drama centers around his character Andrew Yancy, a former police detective who has been demoted. When he learns that a tourist found a severed arm in the ocean, however, he thinks investigating and solving this case could get him back in his boss’s good graces.
As the gripping case unfolds, the backdrop of South Florida and Vaughn’s signature comedic style draws you in. Meredith Hagner is a stand-out playing a well-to-do woman with big plans, while Jodie Turner-Smith brings an air of mystery to the plot as Gracie, an Obeah woman from the Bahamas who goes by the name of Dragon Queen. The show is the personification of breezy charm, so it’s no surprise that Bad Monkey is coming back for a second season.

‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed’ (2026)
Arguably Tatiana Maslany‘s best performance since Orphan Black (nothing will ever top her performance in that sci-fi series), she plays Paula Saunders in Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed, a recently divorced single mom trying to put her life back together. When she witnesses what she believes is a murder on camera while chatting with a webcam model, she feels compelled to look into it. He appeared to have been scamming her, but even so, a young man is possibly dead. How could she ignore that?
The plot in this comedy thriller crime takes Paula down a dangerous rabbit hole she has no business being in, especially while in a custody battle with her ex-husband Karl (Jake Johnson). Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed is indeed maximum pleasure — a wild and fun ride through its 10-episode first season. The ending is satisfying but also opens the door for a potential second season should Apple TV be so inclined.

‘Cape Fear’ (2026)
This remake of the 1962 and 1991 movies, both based on the John D. MacDonald novel The Executioners, creates a modern-day tale that has a throwback feel. Javier Bardem is intoxicating as this new version of Max Cady in Cape Fear, an ex-convict who is released after 17 years. With his newfound freedom, Max sets out to get revenge on the lawyers he blames for having him put away for a crime he claims he did not commit.
The psychological thriller is a masterclass in manipulation, a depiction of a family being torn apart at the seams, slowly and methodically. Yes, Cape Fear takes some wild turns and is even campy at times. But so was the 1991 movie starring Robert De Niro as Cady. Despite polarizing views on the finale, Cape Fear will keep you curious, invested, and drawn to the plot through all 10 episodes.

On Friday, Adam Driver revealed that he would be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with his role as Mister Sinister at the Disney D23 event. On the same day, Lucasfilm boss Dave Filoni gave fans hope that the actor would also be returning to his role as Kylo Ren/Ben Solo from the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy.
Inside ‘The Hunt For Ben Solo’
“The Hunt for Ben Solo” was the name of a “Star Wars” film created by Adam Driver and Steven Soderbergh. The pair worked on the movie for years with help from Scott Z. Burns, who wrote the script. Although Lucasfilm initially approved it, Driver told AP News in October 2025 that the project was shut down because former Disney boss Bob Iger could not see how his character, Ben Solo, could return after he died at the end of 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.”
“We presented the script to Lucasfilm. They loved the idea. They totally understood our angle and why we were doing it,” Driver said at the time. “We took it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman, and they said no. They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was that.”
Although he has been asked about the future of the movie at multiple interviews, Soderbergh has insisted that everyone involved has moved on from the project. In an interview with The Playlist, Soderbergh confirmed that the movie was dead, saying, “Look, if it was gonna happen, it would have happened.”
However, at the Disney D23 event on Friday, Filoni gave fans hope that the project might be resurrected in the future.
At the Disney D23 event, Filoni answered many questions about season 2 of “Ahsoka,” which will hit Disney+ in January 2027. He expressed surprise when he was finally asked about the status of “The Hunt for Ben Solo.”
“We’re not making that picture right now. That’s all I can say,” he said with a Jedi hand wave and a coy smile.
Later, however, Deadline caught up with Filoni, who seemingly thought better of his earlier comments.
“It’s not here. You won’t find it here,” Filoni said when asked if Kylo Ren would ever return. “The force is not with us in that regard. I love the love you feel for it.”
However, fans remain optimistic that he will return. When Filoni said, “you won’t find it here,” some fans have suggested that he meant that an announcement won’t be made at D23, but possibly during 2027’s Star Wars Celebration.
Adam Driver Will Appear In The New ‘X-Men’ Reboot
On Friday night, Driver appeared virtually at Disney’s D23 event to reveal his “X-Men” casting to fans. Although he joked that he would play Magneto, later reports revealed that he will actually play Mister Sinister.
“Kevin and I have been talking for years about maybe joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And I think we finally found the perfect film at the perfect time with characters that I care very deeply about,” he said in the video.
Marvel boss Kevin Feige previously appeared on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast with Josh Horowitz, where he joked about how it was a “tradition” for the “Ferrari” actor to turn down Marvel roles.
He said it was a “long-lived tradition” to “Zoom with him, and then he passes,” but noted that the actor “couldn’t be more cordial” with his rejection and was “usually upfront about how” he was feeling.
Although he didn’t reveal which roles Driver rejected in the past, fans are looking forward to his upcoming involvement in the MCU.
Adam Driver’s ‘Star Wars’ Character Returned In A New Project
Fortunately for fans of Kylo Ren/Ben Solo, the character has returned in a 5-part comic series. While “The Rise of Kylo Ren” explored Ben Solo’s fall to the dark side, “Star Wars: Legacy of Vader – The Reign of Kylo Ren” explored the events just after “The Last Jedi,” where Kylo Ren was forced to come to terms with his family legacy after taking over the position of Supreme Leader of the First Order.
The third story, “The Fall of Kylo Ren” will take place just before the beginning of 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” which is the final movie in the Skywalker Saga. In his monthly newsletter, writer Charles Soule expressed excitement about finishing the trilogy.
“REIGN gave him clarity, even a sort of happiness. FALL is the final piece of the puzzle. I hope those of you following this story will enjoy,” Soule teased, adding, “And Tava Ren’s in it.”
Tava Ren is a Force-sensitive character first introduced in “The Reign of Kylo Ren.” Although she has taken over control of the Knights of Ren while Kylo Ren was busy with the First Order, Kylo Ren is seen exerting control over his Knights in “The Rise of Skywalker.” The last four issues of the comic will explore how he once again took control of the group.
The first issue of “The Fall of Kylo Ren” was released on August 12.
Animation is a limitless format when done right. Creators can conjure up magical, experimental, ambitious worlds on screen without worrying about the constraints that come with live action. That creative freedom has given audiences some of the greatest stories of all time.
However, the same idea can also backfire pretty badly when storytellers are given more playing room than they know what to do with. Taking risks does not automatically make something good, and these forgotten animated shows prove exactly that, because boy, have they aged like milk.
‘Ren & Stimpy “Adult Party Cartoon”‘ (2003)
Ren & Stimpy never needed an adults-only version, and Ren & Stimpy “Adult Party Cartoon” is a pretty convincing argument for why. The original Nickelodeon series was already one of the strangest cartoons on television. It follows the unstable chihuahua Ren (John Kricfalusi and Billy West) and the painfully dim-witted Stimpy (Billy West and Eric Bauza) through stories filled with gross-out humor, surreal imagery, and jokes that should never have aired on a children’s network. This controversy surrounding the cartoon was a huge reason why it became part of mainstream pop culture conversations back then. Then, in 2003, creator John Kricfalusi returned with a revival specifically designed for an older audience as part of the network’s new adult-animation lineup.
Ren and Stimpy were still getting themselves into ridiculous situations, but now the show could be far more explicit with its violence, sexuality, bodily humor, and whatnot. The network ordered several episodes, but only three episodes actually aired during the original television run, and thank goodness for that. Now, the issue wasn’t that the series was going too far. In fact, that was the entire identity of the original cartoon, too. The difference was that the original actually had some creativity behind all the grotesque humor. The revival seemed to believe that stretching those same ideas beyond their endpoint was the way to go. With time, Adult Party Cartoon has only gotten grosser with its violence and need to make every joke as uncomfortable as possible.
‘Stripperella’ (2003–2004)
Stripperella might just be one of the strangest things comic-book legend Stan Lee has ever created. The animated series follows Erotica Jones, voiced by Pamela Anderson, an exotic dancer who secretly works as the superhero Stripperella. She fights crime for an organization called T.H.U.G.G. and takes on villains with names like Cheapo and Pushy Galore while using an arsenal of increasingly ridiculous abilities and gadgets, one of them being a lie detector built into her chest. Now, on paper, there is actually something fun about the idea. Stripperella is confident and far more competent than everyone around her. The problem is that the series wants credit for making her powerful while simultaneously turning practically every part of that power into another sexual joke.
Even the villains and storylines revolve around breast implants, beauty standards, sex, and increasingly desperate innuendos. After a few episodes, it becomes obvious that the show has exactly one joke and is going to keep finding different ways to tell it. That pretty much “strips” the otherwise intriguing premise of all meaning, no pun intended. The series ran for just 13 episodes, and with time, its cancellation has only made more sense. The show’s idea of being provocative now feels less rebellious than stereotypical. Its constant objectification and obsession with turning every female character into a punchline make the humor feel painfully dated, especially because the series rarely has anything else to say underneath all that shock value.
‘Hulk Hogan’s Rock ‘n’ Wrestling’ (1985–1986)
Hulk Hogan’s Rock ‘n’ Wrestling arrived at the height of Hulkamania, when the WWF was aggressively moving professional wrestling into mainstream pop culture. However, for a show about the iconic Hulk Hogan, the series barely features any wrestling. The show follows an animated Hogan, who leads the good guys alongside cartoon versions of André the Giant, Junkyard Dog, Wendi Richter, and Hillbilly Jim, while Roddy Piper heads a group of villains that includes Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, and Big John Studd. Instead of settling their problems in a ring as one would expect, the wrestlers spend most episodes getting involved in goofy adventures that have nothing to do with the sport. There is something fascinating about watching the show now because it’s easy to understand that it was little more than a marketing ploy for the WWF.
Every wrestler is reduced to the broadest stereotype of their in-ring persona. Wrestling already relied heavily on exaggerated characters during this era, but turning those gimmicks into cartoons somehow makes them feel even more ridiculous. The strangest part is that the wrestlers did not even voice their animated counterparts because their touring schedules made recording together impractical. Instead, the actual wrestlers appeared in occasional live-action comedy segments between the cartoons. That disconnect was always hard to ignore. The cartoon itself was simplistic and boring after the first few episodes. It’s interesting to revisit as a piece of wrestling history, but there’s nothing that would make fans want more of it.
‘Father of the Pride’ (2004–2005)
Father of the Pride is less of a cartoon and more of an animation identity crisis. DreamWorks tried to bring feature-quality CGI to network television with this primetime sitcom based around the animals from Siegfried & Roy’s Las Vegas show. The series follows Larry (John Goodman), a white lion who performs at the Mirage and lives behind the scenes with his wife Kate (Cheryl Hines), their two children, and Kate’s overbearing father Sarmoti (Carl Reiner). Imagine a traditional family sitcom, except everyone is a lion and Siegfried & Roy occasionally wander into the story. NBC reportedly paid around $2 million per episode, so this was an enormous gamble for an animated comedy at the time.
Now, the production value definitely shows at moments, but the biggest problem with Father of the Pride was that it could never decide between being a cute DreamWorks cartoon versus an edgy adult comedy. The show follows Larry as he deals with marriage, parenting, and work, but those stories are constantly punctuated with sex jokes and crude humor. The show sits somewhere between family animation and raunchy adult TV, which is a combination that just didn’t work for anyone, and with time, that confusion has only gotten more glaringly obvious.
‘Minoriteam’ (2005–2006)
Minoriteam is a classic Adult Swim animated sitcom. The series follows a superhero team made up of exaggerated racial, ethnic, and religious stereotypes who use equally stereotypical abilities to fight discrimination. There is Dr. Wang (Dana Snyder), the team’s wheelchair-using leader, the Jewish superhero Jewcano (Enn Reitel), Indian convenience-store worker Non-Stop (Keith Lal), and several others. Their main enemy is called White Shadow (Adam de la Peña), who operates a corporation alongside villains like Racist Frankenstein (de la Peña) and Corporate Ladder (Todd James). The entire concept was designed as an intentionally offensive parody of superhero comics and racial stereotypes.
However, the execution was a total mess that destroyed any kind of value that the show could have brought to TV. Minoriteam might try to show how ridiculous these racial stereotypes are, but the series exaggerates them to the point where any social commentary loses its point. Almost every character, superpower, accent, and punchline circle back to the same racial caricatures. The heroes themselves repeatedly reinforce the attitudes the series is supposedly ridiculing, which defeats the very purpose of the kind of satire the show attempts to emulate. The writing is plain lazy and lacks any sense of personality, and those things become even harder to ignore almost two decades later.
‘Chozen’ (2014)
Chozen had an opportunity to be genuinely subversive, and it’s unfortunate how things turned out. The FX animated series follows Phil “Chozen” Collins (Bobby Moynihan), an overweight, gay white rapper who returns from prison determined to rebuild the music career that was stolen from him by his former friend and bandmate Phantasm (Method Man), who framed him for a crime and went on to become a successful rapper himself. Once released, Chozen moves in with his sister, Tracy (Kathryn Hahn), and begins putting his old crew back together so he can finally take his revenge and reclaim his place in hip-hop. That premise gave the show plenty to work with. It was interesting how the series was specifically designed around a protagonist whose sexuality challenged gender norms and the very masculine identity that people associate with rap culture.
However, like most shows on this list, Chozen used its premise as a source of shock-driven humor instead of anything remotely meaningful. The show was borderline vulgar with how it inserted prison jokes, sexual encounters, drugs, and harassment into everything. That’s not to say Chozen did not make funny observations about the cost of fame. Later episodes of the cartoon even give supporting characters, including Ricky (Michael Peña) and Crisco (Hannibal Buress), enough room to become funny outside their stereotypes. Unfortunately, some of the show’s best ideas are never fully developed because it spends most of its short run re-telling the same crass jokes over and over again.
‘Butt-Ugly Martians’ (2001)
Butt-Ugly Martians has aged like milk, but it felt dated even back when it was still airing. The series is set in 2053 and follows three Martian soldiers who are sent to Earth by Emperor Bog to conquer the planet. The problem is that the soldiers love the planet after discovering junk food, video games, and human culture. They completely abandon the invasion and befriend three teenagers while sending fake progress reports back home. Whenever trouble arrives, they activate their “Butt-Kicking Mode” and transform into armored versions of themselves to save the planet they were supposed to destroy. The premise is harmless, and the show could have definitely become a fun early-2000s sci-fi cartoon.
Unfortunately, it arrived at exactly the wrong stage of TV CGI. The characters look stiff, the environments feel empty, and there is an uncanny-valley feel to the show that one just can’t shake. If the series had relied on traditional, tried-and-tested forms of animation rather than jumping on a new trend too early, it could have been a moderate success. Instead, Butt-Ugly Martians turned into a lesson about how staying ahead of the curve might not always be the best idea. Aside from that, the show also didn’t benefit from its forgettable villains and repetitive humor. All of that contributes to why it has become a forgotten relic of the 2000s.

Selena Gomez is firing back after the pop star and her mother, Mandy Teefey, were named in a fraud lawsuit.
“The allegations that Selena Gomez engaged in any way whatsoever in any purported ‘fraud’ or other wrongdoing are completely meritless, both factually and legally,” Gomez’s lawyer Mathew S. Rosengart told Us in a Saturday, August 15, statement. “We will vigorously defend these false allegations and indeed are filing a motion to dismiss the baseless claims against her.” (People was first to report the news.)
News broke earlier this week that Gomez, 34, and her mother, 50, have been sued for allegedly defrauding investors of their Wondermind startup.
The lawsuit was filed by Wondermind SRS 44 LLC and Bespoke Wondermind LCC over Gomez’s parent company, in which the plaintiffs claimed that Gomez and Teefey falsely represented Wondermind’s infrastructure, leadership and the resources needed to launch a profitable platform upon its launch. The investors claim in the docs obtained by Us that they invested more than $1 million into Wondermind.
“For three years, while the company quietly collapsed around them, not one of its founders, officers or directors said a word to the investors whose money was funding the collapse,” court documents obtained by Us read, in part.
The investors further alleged that they learned Wondermind was apparently struggling through a 2025 exposé in The Cut. At the time, the magazine reported that Wondermind was allegedly in a “state of utter disarray” and that Teefey struggled with substance abuse issues. (Teefey vehemently denied the accusations at the time.)
Per the investors’ filing, they claimed that Teefey mismanaged the firm while Gomez had an “abject dereliction of her duties to the company.” Gomez and her mom are being sued for securities fraud with the investors seeking unspecified damages, including a return on their investments.
Gomez and Teefey cofounded Wondermind, a multimedia platform designed to offer mental health support, in 2022 alongside Daniella Pierson. (Pierson, 31, left the organization in 2023.)

We have taken an unexpected and innovative chance on the way people can understand and participate in a creative foundation to show anyone that a shift is possible,” Teefey said in a statement at the time, announcing the then-new venture. “Far from medical or preachy, we’ve struck a balance between education, media and self-reflection that truly inspires growth.”
Nearly three years later, Forbes reported that Wondermind allegedly laid off 60 percent of its staff, citing financial issues.
“In the coming days, we will be transitioning into a new chapter for Wondermind,” a spokesperson for Wondermind told the outlet at the time, claiming that the firm had “rectified” any outstanding financial debts.
Teefey has not publicly addressed the fraud claims. Us reached out for comment.
