Don’t Give Your Space Ship This Name, Unless You Want To Kill The Entire Crew

Don't Give Your Space Ship This Name, Unless You Want To Kill The Entire Crew

By Joshua Tyler
| Published

Prometheus is one of the most well-known figures in Greek mythology, probably because he was one of the few gods who actually seemed to like people. He defied the king of the gods, Zeus, by stealing fire and giving it to humans so civilization could advance. As punishment, Zeus chained him to a mountain where he was tortured forever, making Prometheus a symbol of rebellion, sacrifice, and the pursuit of knowledge.

So it makes sense that science fiction writers might like using that name for their starships. If you want to write a story about a group of humans pursuing knowledge by exploring space, then naming your ship after the mythological figure who made it possible makes you seem like you’re smart.

Unfortunately, ships named Prometheus, like the god himself, never come to a good end. Naming a starship Prometheus has become a way to signal certain doom.

USCSS Prometheus In Prometheus

Ridley Scott’s movie Prometheus takes its name from the film’s starship, the USCSS Prometheus. In theory, it’s carrying a crew out into the unknown on a mission of discovery. That mission of discovery turns into a disaster, and what the crew of the Prometheus finds may be humanity’s end. Prometheus isn’t a name Ridley Scott uses lightly.

It’s also the end of the ship, which is destroyed when the crew deliberately crashes it into the massive alien Engineer ship to stop it from reaching Earth. Don’t worry, most of the crew was dead already, and the rest will be dead soon.

EAS Prometheus On Babylon 5

The Babylon project was the galaxy’s last best hope for peace, created in the shadow of an Earth/Minbari war which never would have happened at all if not for an Earth starship named Prometheus.

In the year 2245, an Earthforce Hyperion-class heavy cruiser, named the EAS Prometheus, was the first to encounter a Minbari cruiser. The Minbari approached the Earth ship with their gunports open, a move that in their culture is meant as a sign of respect.

The Prometheus’s captain, one Michael Jankowski, misinterpreted those actions as a threat. He ordered his crew to open fire on the Minbari cruiser, killing their leader Dukhat, and plunging humanity into a war that would kill billions and bring it to the brink of extinction.

The Minbari kill billions, thanks to the Prometheus.

USS Prometheus NCC-71201 On Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

In the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Second Sight,” a ship named the Prometheus is used to carry a brilliant scientist to his doom.

In theory, the mission is one of discovery. Professor Seyetick plans to use his discoveries to re-ignite a dead star. But Seyetik’s personal life is unhappy, and his wife, Nidell, a mysterious alien, longs to be free of him. Nidell is stuck, her species mates for life, and there is no way out. Seyetik, who still loves his wife, becomes determined to free her from the prison he’s built for her.

In a final desperate act, Seyetik launches a shuttle from the Prometheus and flies it into the dead star. As his life ends, Seyetik shouts “let there be light!” and the once dead sun blazes with fire, consuming him in its rebirth.

Prometheus On Stargate SG-1

Of all the ships named Prometheus to have made their way through science fiction, this one had the most successful career. Built by humans and enhanced with alien technology, the Prometheus was humanity’s first interstellar ship, and served for years as a permanent part of Earth’s defense against all aggressors. After years of successfully surviving conflicts, though, this Prometheus would also meet its doom.

The ship was destroyed in early 2006, a casualty of battle over the alien planet Tegalus. After taking multiple hits, the ship split at the neck and exploded, taking 39 members of the crew with her to the grave.

Prometheus is destroyed.

USS Prometheus NX-59650 On Star Trek: Voyager

Instead of their savior, The Doctor finds an experimental Federation starship that has been successfully hijacked by the Romulans. Using the ship’s new weapons against her creators, the Romulans are able to escape with the vessel and are only prevented from returning to the Romulan Star Empire through the efforts of the Doctor in concert with the ship’s native EMH.

10 Years Later, Michael Bay’s Divisive Sci-Fi Hit Is Officially Taking Over the World

Published

on

01372772_poster_w780.jpg

Say what you want about Michael Bay, but the filmmaker has directed and produced many big-name projects. While some found huge success, others ended as box-office bombs. And the projects that have become theatrical failures tend to find redemption on streaming platforms.

Ever since Bay started his career in 1986, He has worked as a producer on many franchises, most notably Transformers (which he also directed), as well as The Purge, A Quiet Place, and the 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th. But there is another franchise that Bay was attached to that was heavily criticized, yet it got a sequel that underperformed compared to its predecessor.

In 2014, Bay was one of the producers of the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. While it was a box-office success, it received negative reviews from both critics and fans. Its box-office performance led to the creation of its sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which recently became a streaming hit. The film ranked #10 on Tubi’s Top 10 Overall charts in the United States, below The Rainmaker. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows featured the return of Megan Fox as April O’Neil, while the Ninja Turtles were played by Reacher‘s Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard, and Noel Fisher. Also introduced in the movie is Casey Jones, played by Arrow star Stephen Amell.

Your Partner Has Been Assigned
Your Perfect Partner Is…

Your answers have pointed to one action hero above all others. This is the person built to have your back — for better or considerably, spectacularly worse.

Rambo

Your partner doesn’t talk much, doesn’t need to, and will have assessed every threat in your immediate environment before you’ve finished your first sentence. John Rambo is not a man of plans or politics — he is a force of nature shaped by survival, loyalty, and a capacity for endurance that goes beyond anything training can produce. He will not leave you behind. He has never left anyone behind who deserved to come home. What you get with Rambo is the most capable, most quietly ferocious partner imaginable — one who has been through things that would have broken anyone else, and who chose to keep going anyway. You’ll never need to ask if he has your back. You’ll just know.

James Bond

Your partner will arrive perfectly dressed, perfectly briefed, and with a cover story so convincing it’ll take you a moment to remember what’s actually true. James Bond is the most professionally dangerous person in any room he enters — and the most disarmingly charming, which is the point. He operates in a world of layers, where nothing is what it appears and every advantage is used without apology. You’ll never be bored. You’ll occasionally be furious. But when it matters — when the mission is genuinely on the line and the margin for error has collapsed to nothing — Bond is exactly the partner you want. He has survived things that have no business being survivable. He does it with style. That is not nothing.

Indiana Jones

Your partner will know the history, the language, the cultural context, and exactly why the thing everyone else is ignoring is actually the most important thing in the room. Indiana Jones is brilliant, reckless, and occasionally impossible — but he is also one of the most resourceful, most genuinely knowledgeable partners you could find yourself beside. He approaches every situation with a scholar’s eye and a brawler’s instinct, which is an unusual combination and a remarkably effective one. He hates snakes and gets personally attached to objects of historical significance, both of which will slow you down at least once. It doesn’t matter. What Indy brings is irreplaceable — and the adventures you’ll have together will be the kind people write books about. Assuming you survive them.

John McClane

Your partner was not supposed to be here. He does not have the right equipment, the right information, or anything approaching the right odds. He has a sarcastic remark and an absolute refusal to accept that the situation is as bad as it looks. John McClane is the greatest accidental hero in the history of action cinema — a man whose superpower is stubbornness, whose contingency plan is improvisation, and whose capacity to absorb punishment and keep moving would be alarming if it weren’t so useful. He will complain the entire time. He will make it significantly more chaotic than it needed to be. And he will absolutely, unconditionally, without question come through when it counts. Yippee-ki-yay.

Ethan Hunt

Your partner has already run seventeen scenarios by the time you’ve finished reading the briefing, and the plan he’s settled on involves at least two things that should be physically impossible. Ethan Hunt operates at the absolute edge of human capability — technically, physically, and intellectually — and he brings the same relentless precision to protecting his partners that he brings to dismantling organisations that shouldn’t exist. He is not easy to know and he will never fully tell you everything. But he will carry the weight of the mission so completely, so absolutely, that your job is simply to trust him — and the remarkable thing is that trusting him always turns out to be the right call. The mission will be impossible. He will complete it anyway.

Is ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows’ Worth Watching?

When Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows was released in theaters, it became a box-office flop, only making $246 million worldwide, compared to the $485 million its predecessor made in 2014. At the same time, the sequel was still heavily criticized, earning a 38% critics score and a 47% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. ScreenRant claimed that the sequel was able to “capture the spirit of classic TMNT cartoons” rather than trying to make it “grounded” and “believable,” and bringing Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (Stephen “Sheamus” Farrelly) felt like something “ripped right out of the 1987 animated series.” However, its poor score was due to a lack of memorable combat scenes that failed to appeal to its adult fanbase.

Collider’s Perri Nemiroff gave Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows a “B-” grade in her review. She noted that some of the combat scenes would be “sloppy” due to heavy CGI use, especially in the 3rd act. She also praised the actors’ performances as the Ninja Turtles and their designs, which she described as “highly detailed and well integrated in the real world.” She also praised how director Dave Green and the screenwriters addressed the turtles’ dilemma of whether to fit in with society or keep a low profile.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is available to stream on Tubi and Paramount+. Follow Collider for more updates.

The Biggest Fantasy Epic Since ‘The Green Knight’ Officially Debuts in 5 Weeks

Published

The indie outfit A24 is using freshly injected funds to pump more money into its movies. After a decade in the indie trenches, during which only one of its movies passed the $100 million mark at the worldwide box office, A24 decided to level up in scale. Its first project of this new era was Alex Garland‘s dystopian thriller Civil War, which broke the studio’s opening weekend record and went on to gross around $130 million worldwide.

With a reported budget of $50 million, Civil War also happened to be the most expensive A24 movie ever made. The record has since been broken by Marty Supreme, which cost a reported $70 million to produce and went on to gross more than $190 million worldwide. A24 is about to enter production on an even more expensive movie, Garland’s video-game adaptation Elden Ring, whose budget is said to be in the $100 million range. But before that, however, A24 will release its next potential blockbuster — a period epic headlined by a bona fide A-lister.

Of course, nothing is guaranteed these days. Consider The Smashing Machine, which underperformed in 2025 with just $21 million worldwide against a reported budget of $50 million. The sports biopic, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, was supposed to enter the more commercial tier created by Civil War. Instead, it ended up grossing less than one-third of Moonlight‘s haul at the worldwide box office. The studio’s next release is headlined by Hugh Jackman, who can currently be seen in the critically acclaimed mystery film The Sheep Detectives. A couple of years ago, Jackman starred in one of the most expensive films ever made, Deadpool & Wolverine, which grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide against a reported budget of more than $500 million.

Ben Affleck’s Daughter Violet Trolled Over Mask-Free Outing

Published

on

Ben Affleck and daugther Violet Affleck strolling in Santa Monica

Ben Affleck‘s daughter, Violet, became the target of online trolling after she was seen not wearing her mask while out with her mother, Jennifer Garner.

The college student had been away for the past few months but recently returned home for the summer holidays. She joined her mother and younger brother, Samuel, for a casual trip to grab ice cream at a nearby creamery.

In recent years, Violet Affleck has advocated for mask-wearing and criticized those who have called for a ban on masks, leading to her getting scrutinized for her stance.

Violet Affleck made the rare decision to remove her mask during an outing with her mother, Jennifer Garner, and brother Samuel after returning home from college for the summer holidays.

However, the gesture led to her being mocked by netizens after images from the outing, obtained by the Daily Mail, hit the internet.

The negative reaction from critics online was likely a result of Violet’s pro-mask stance, especially as she has consistently spoken against calls to ban masks while demanding renewed COVID-19 protections.

In a sarcastic comment poking fun at Violet, one critic wrote, “lol any day now before it goes back on due to the ‘new’ pandemic.”

Another asked, “So someone finally got her the mental health support she needs?” while a third person said, “Oh Wow! Typical Hollywood hypocrisy!!:

Amid the trolling, some concerned folks also raised a different possibility behind why Violet was not wearing the mask.

“Could have been having a health issue that’s now resolved. Making a decision best for your mental and physical wellness is not everyone’s business,” noted an individual.

See the image of her mask-free outing here.

The reason behind Violet wearing a mask is linked to her being diagnosed with a “post-viral condition” back in 2019.

Since then, she has not only preferred wearing a mask when out in public but has also advocated for others to do the same.

“I’m OK now, but I saw firsthand that medicine does not always have answers to the consequences of even minor viruses,” the young adult said during her speech for the LA County Board of Supervisors in 2024, according to a report.

In her speech, Violet also spoke against any ban on wearing masks, saying such regulations “do not keep us safer” and make “vulnerable members of our community less safe.”

The college student also added her voice to calls for increased access to “high-quality free tests and treatment” within the county.

In 2025, Violet Affleck also took her advocacy to a United Nations event, where she called for more action to address airborne diseases due to the immense risks they pose.

“It is neglect of the highest order to look children in the eyes and say, ‘We knew how to protect you, and we didn’t do it,’” Violet said at the time.

Speaking further, she criticized how many now seem to downplay the effects of COVID-19 despite the devastation it caused. In her view, she also believes that clean air should be considered just as much of a human right as clean water.

“Long COVID has surpassed asthma as the most common chronic illness in children in five years and under,” Violent added, before noting how terrified she was that some children  “will not know a world without debilitating pain and exhaustion” due to the effects Covid had on them.

Violet Affleck’s UN Speech Sparked Backlash

Violet’s UN speech at the time led to intense backlash online due to her calls for reinstated mask mandates, a highly controversial stance since the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of her most prominent critics was Meghan McCain, who lashed out at Violet on social media, writing, “Every single thing about all of this is why people hate nepo babies so much.”

As reported by The Blast, McCain argued that Violet’s appearance at the UN felt unnecessary, implying she had little idea what she was talking about.

After being branded a “nepo baby” herself, McCain further doubled down on her criticism of Violet by stating that her parents would never co-sign her speaking at a high-profile event without being well-versed on the sensitive topic that was being discussed.

“Having famous parents is a double-edged sword, and if you’re going to put yourself out there, you gotta take the heat (as I have always done),” McCain added at the time.

The 20-Year-Old Received High Praise From Her Father, Ben Affleck

Violet has repeatedly been praised by her father, with one such instance occurring during a recent interview with Access Hollywood.

At the time, he noted how she takes after her mother, adding that she is “spectacular.” The actor also spoke about his coparent arrangement with Violet’s mother and how she makes it all so easy for him

“I’m very lucky that I’ve got a great partner and we’ve got great kids. It’s the joy of my life, and I’m just very, very lucky. And it makes me happy every day,” Affleck said, per Hola.

Affleck’s comments about Garner echoed remarks he made during an appearance on “Good Morning America” in 2020, per the Daily Mail.

“When you have children with somebody, you’re connected to them forever. And I’m very lucky she [Garner] is the mother of my children,” he said. “I’m very grateful and respectful of her.”

Wade Wilson, the convicted murderer who became a viral social media fixation as the “Deadpool Killer,” is back in the spotlight after his crimes were documented in Paramount+’s Handsome Devil: Charming Killer and Netflix’s Worst Ex Ever. Wilson was found guilty in June 2024 of murdering Kristine Melton and Diane Ruiz in Cape Coral, Florida, and was sentenced to death two months later.

Here’s everything to know about Wilson, his crimes and the social media fascination that surrounds him.

Inside Wade Wilson’s Crimes

Wilson killed Melton and Ruiz on the same morning of October 7, 2019, in Cape Coral, Florida, according to A&E. The night before, Wilson met Melton at a bar, where the two hit it off. Their group eventually returned to a friend’s house, and Wilson and Melton became intimate. Their encounter took a horrifying turn when Wilson strangled Melton in her bed, then stole her car and fled the scene.

A man accused of attacking his girlfriend with a shovel and a knife, killing her before fatally stabbing her 4-year-old daughter, has been sentenced to death in Florida, according to court records viewed by Us Weekly. In October 2025, a Hillsborough County jury found Angel Gabriel Cuz Choc guilty of first-degree murder in connection with […]

That same morning, Wilson violently assaulted his then-girlfriend, Mila Montanez, at her workplace. His rampage continued when he spotted Ruiz walking to her nearby job. Wilson asked Ruiz for directions and managed to lure her into his car, where he strangled her. He initially thought Ruiz was dead and planned to bury her body, but when he realized she was still breathing, he ran her over several times with Melton’s stolen car.

In disturbing audio featured in the docuseries trailer, Wilson can be heard describing the killings in his own words. “I choked her out so she couldn’t breathe anymore,” he said in a recorded phone call. “I was on a rampage at this point.”

Another clip captured Wilson saying, “A rage overcomes me. Just kill, kill, kill. When I get that way, I become the devil. I’m like the lion, you’re the prey. I can sense it.”

Wade Wilson’s Arrest and Confession

Wilson was ultimately turned in by his own biological father, Steven Testasecca. After the murders, he confessed the graphic details of what he had done to Testasecca during several phone calls. Testasecca contacted law enforcement, and Wilson was arrested later that evening.

Once in police custody, Wilson reportedly showed no remorse for the killings. Authorities said he told them he would commit the crimes “again” if given the chance.

In voiceover audio featured in the trailer, Wilson is heard reflecting on his approach to the women he encountered. “This is what I do with women, you know. I use my charm, my good looks,” he said.

Wade Wilson’s Trial and Death Sentence

Wilson’s case went to trial in June 2024. He was found guilty on six counts, including two counts of first-degree murder, grand theft, burglary and battery, according to A&E. In August 2024, Wilson was sentenced to death.

Before the trial began, Wilson dramatically altered his appearance by getting tattoos covering his face and neck. The new look helped transform public perception of him — and turned the case into a social media phenomenon.

Has a Date Been Set for Wade Wilson’s Execution?

An execution date has not yet been set for Wilson. His attorneys are actively appealing his death sentence, arguing that a 2023 Florida state law that allows juries to recommend a death sentence without a unanimous vote should not apply to Wilson because his crimes were committed before the law was passed, according to NJ.com.

Wade Wilson’s Rise to Social Media Notoriety

As Wilson’s mugshot circulated online, his face tattoos and good looks made him a viral figure. The media nicknamed him the “Deadpool Killer” because he shares his name with the Marvel antihero played by Ryan Reynolds.

Public fascination quickly spilled offline. Women showed up to his court appearances in support, and entire social media accounts were dedicated to him. One commentator featured in Handsome Devil: Charming Killer noted that Wilson was “building a cult following.”

In the trailer, women from Wilson’s past recall describing him as “attractive” and “very nice” before his arrest, with some admitting they thought they could change him. The footage captures the unsettling collision of true crime and internet culture that the docuseries plans to explore.

Bruce Springsteen Snubs Chris Christie at Brooklyn Concert

Published

Bruce Springsteen apparently had no time for former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie at his Brooklyn concert.

Video shared via X by journalist Mike Ryan showcased an awkward moment during Springsteen and the E Street Band’s Barclays Center show on Thursday, May 14.

As “The Boss,” walked through the crowd to shake hands with fans, Christie, 63, stuck out his own hand — and was seemingly ignored when Springsteen, 76, walked past him. Christie immediately pulled back his hand, shrugged and resumed clapping along with the music.

Us Weekly has reached out to Christie and Springsteen’s representatives for comment.

Springsteen and Christie have a somewhat contentious history. The former governor is a self-professed Springsteen super-fan who has boasted of attending more than 100 of the rocker’s concerts over the years.

“No one is beyond the reach of Bruce,” he once told The Atlantic.

Former President Barack Obama connected the two for the first time in November 2012 while Springsteen was riding on Air Force One. During a phone call about Hurricane Sandy, Obama told Christie that Springsteen wanted to speak to him and they had a brief conversation, per Variety.

That same month, Springsteen and Christie greeted one another backstage at a Hurricane Sandy benefit concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

“We hugged,” Christie told reporters of his in-person meeting with his musical idol. “He told me it’s official: we’re friends. I told the president today, actually, that the hug was great and when we got home, there was a lot of weeping because of the hug. And the president asked why. I said, ‘Well, to be honest, I was the one doing the weeping.’”

However, Springsteen later poked fun at Christie during the 2013 “Bridgegate” scandal. (Christie’s staff was accused of deliberately causing traffic jams near Fort Lee, New Jersey, by ordering the closure of a toll plaza. This political maneuvering was seen as retribution for Fort Lee’s Mayor Mark Sokolich opposing Christie’s administration.)

Christie was not criminally charged over the “Bridgegate” scandal, though many pundits suggested that the controversy eroded support for his ill-fated presidential campaign in 2016.

Donald Trump Thinks Boring Bruce Springsteen Looks Like a Dried Up Prune in Rant Against Singer

President Donald Trump asked his supporters to boycott Bruce Springsteen after the musician kicked off his latest tour. “Bad, and very boring singer, Bruce Springsteen, who looks like a dried up prune who has suffered greatly from the work of a really bad plastic surgeon, has long had a horrible and incurable case of Trump […]

At the height of the controversy, Springsteen joined Jimmy Fallon on his Late Night show in 2014 to sing a parody version of “Born to Run” about “Bridgegate.”

“Baby this Bridgegate was just payback / It’s a bitch slap to the state Democrats,” Fallon, 51, and Springsteen sang. “We got to get out while we can / We’re stuck in Governor Chris Christie’s Fort Lee-New Jersey traffic jam!”

More recently, Springsteen offered an olive branch to President Donald Trump amid a years-long public feud. During an Austin, Texas concert on April 26, Springsteen lled his audience in a prayer after the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting.

“We begin tonight with a prayer for our men and women in service overseas, we pray for their safe return,” Springsteen told fans. “We also send out a prayer of thanks that our president, nor anyone in the administration, nor anyone attending, was injured at last night’s incident at the [White House] press correspondents’ dinner.”

He went on, “We can disagree. We can be critical of those in power, and we can peacefully fight for our beliefs. But there is no place in any way, shape, or form for political violence of any kind in our beloved United States.”

Suspected shooter Cole Tomas Allen allegedly opened fire at the Washington Hilton on April 25 while President Trump, first lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other officials from their administration were attending the dinner.

Allen, 31, was apprehended after injuring a Secret Service agent. He later pleaded not guilty to charges of attempting to assassinate the president of the United States, transportation of a firearm and ammunition in interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence.

Martin Short Says Daughter’s Tragedy Echoes Wife’s Death

Martin Short and Nancy Dolman arrive at Kennedy Center Honors in Washington

Martin Short is opening up about one of the most painful periods of his life with devastating honesty.

Years after losing his wife, Nancy Dolman, the beloved comedian is now grieving another unimaginable tragedy following the death of his daughter, Katherine.

While reflecting on both losses, Short revealed the emotional connection between their final words and why he believes mental illness deserves to be treated like any other disease.

The “Only Murders in the Building” star recently spoke to The New York Times while discussing his Netflix documentary “Marty, Life Is Short.”

During the emotional conversation, Short looked back on the final days of his wife, Nancy Dolman, who died from ovarian cancer in 2010 at age 58.

As he reflected on losing Dolman after nearly 30 years of marriage, Short revealed the heartbreaking final message she shared with him.

“Martin, let me go,” Short recalled her saying.

The actor explained that hearing similar emotions years later, after the death of his daughter, Katherine, forced him to think about grief and illness in a completely different way.

Short and Dolman first met in 1972 before marrying in 1980. Together, they raised three children: Katherine, Oliver, and Henry.

Over the years, Short frequently described Dolman as the emotional center of their family, making her loss especially difficult for him and their children.

While speaking with The New York Times, Short revealed that the death of his daughter Katherine earlier this year reopened emotions he had carried since losing his wife.

Katherine died by suicide in February at age 42, according to the Los Angeles coroner’s office.

As Short reflected on her death, he explained that he heard echoes of Dolman’s final plea in what he imagined his daughter may have been trying to express during her own struggle.

“Katherine was saying: Dad, let me go,” he said.

Short then shared his belief that mental illness deserves to be viewed with the same seriousness as physical diseases.

“I don’t see any difference between mental illness as a disease and cancer as a disease,” he explained. “In some cases, both are terminal. And in some cases, both are survivable.”

The actor admitted that losing a child brought a different level of pain than anything he had experienced before.

“This is your child,” Short said. “I am trying to head toward the light.”

Short Speaks Openly About Mental Health

Martin Short also addressed the tragedy during a May 10 appearance on “CBS News Sunday Morning,” where he described Katherine’s death as “a nightmare for the family.”

During the interview, the actor spoke candidly about his daughter’s years-long mental health battle and the challenges she faced privately.

“But the understanding that mental health and cancer, like my wife [had], are both diseases,” Short explained. “Sometimes with diseases, they are terminal. My daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she could until she couldn’t.”

He again reflected on the emotional connection between Dolman’s final words and his daughter’s death.

“So Nan’s last words to me were, ‘Martin, let me go.’ And what she was saying was, ‘Dad, let me go.’”

The comedian also explained why he became involved with Bring Change to Mind, an organization focused on mental health awareness and ending stigma surrounding mental illness.

“So I hold a deep desire. And that’s why I’m involved in this organization, Bring Change to Mind … taking mental health out of the shadows, not being ashamed of it, not hiding from the word ‘suicide,’ but accepting that this could be the last stage of an illness,” he said.

Although Katherine largely stayed out of the public spotlight, she devoted much of her career to helping people struggling with mental health challenges.

She worked as a licensed clinical social worker in private practice while also serving part-time at Amae Health. According to reports, her responsibilities included psychotherapy, peer support, family support groups, and community outreach.

Friends and loved ones remembered Katherine as deeply compassionate and committed to supporting others through difficult moments.

Following her death, the Short family released a statement describing her as someone who brought warmth and happiness to everyone around her.

They said Katherine was “beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”

Despite the pain surrounding the tragedy, Martin Short has continued speaking publicly in hopes that discussing grief and mental illness openly may help other families feel less isolated.

Martin Short Wants Families To Stop Suffering In Silence

Elsewhere during his “CBS News Sunday Morning” interview, Short explained why he felt it was important not to hide from conversations about suicide and mental illness.

“If I said to the audience, any audience I was in, ‘How many have lost anyone from suicide?’ you’d be stunned by the hands that would go [up],” he said. “‘How many have mental health in their family?’ You’d be stunned by the hands that would go up.”

The actor believes many families quietly carry similar pain but avoid speaking openly about it because of shame or fear.

“So why pretend that this is your own pain? Maybe by sharing your pain it will help other people’s pain,” Short added.

For Short, turning grief into conversation now appears to be part of the healing process as he continues trying to move forward after two devastating losses that forever changed his life.
