The Movie Became A Cult Classic

“Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” follows best friends Romy (Sorvino) and Michele (Kudrow), who return to their hometown for their 10-year high school reunion, determined to reinvent themselves and impress their former classmates.

Robin Schiff, known as the writer for “Emily in Paris” and “Grosse Pointe,” wrote the screenplay for the first “Romy and Michele” movie and the sequel.

The Movie Stemmed From Minor Characters In A Play

In an appearance on Drew Barrymore’s talk show in January 2025, Kudrow discussed the origins of the cult comedy, revealing that Romy and Michele were actually minor characters in the 1988 play “Ladies’ Room,” written by Schiff.

Kudrow auditioned for the role of “Airhead No. 2,” which became Michelle, and Christie Mellor portrayed Romy. “We were these minor characters. We were on stage a total of seven minutes, in and out, for the whole play,” Kudrow told Barrymore. Later, the characters were developed for a TV pilot that didn’t take off. With tweaks to the script, it was greenlit as a movie.

Helldivers is still expected to hit theaters on November 10, 2027.

However, this might be an opportunity for Sony to re-examine what a Helldivers movie should actually be, because the idea of it having one single star instead of a cavalcade of stars who replace each other with every hilariously gory and painful death almost misses the point. Official plot details are under wraps just now, but it shouldn’t be too tough to figure out where it’ll go.

The original Helldivers game launched in 2015 as a cooperative shooter, putting players in the role of elite soldiers fighting to protect Super Earth from the enemies of mankind. Helldivers 2 expanded that world enormously, sending players into an explosive intergalactic war as soldiers spreading peace, liberty, and Managed Democracy. With, you know, missiles, space lasers, hellfire from the skies, the usual ways you “liberate” places.

The movie is being produced by Hutch Parker, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, and Justin Lin through his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner. Lin is best known for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise, so a big budget sci-fi that’s laced with humor and knowing winks is probably right in his wheelhouse.

Sony and PlayStation Productions have already found big success adapting games for film and television. Their previous projects include Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, which grossed $407 million worldwide, along with Peacock’s Twisted Metal and HBO’s award-winning The Last of Us. Helldivers is the next move in that big strategy after Helldivers 2 sold more than 12 million units across PlayStation 5 and PC in its first four months after launching in 2024.

Their story wasn’t built on galaxy-shattering revelations or franchise-defining twists, it was built on a simple but effective foundation: a lone warrior, a child in need of protection, and a galaxy full of dangers waiting around every corner. The movie understands that appeal, yet much of the discourse surrounding it has focused on whether it does enough to move the larger Star Wars franchise forward. That’s a strange criticism to level at a movie that was never trying to be anything other than an entertaining continuation of a story people already enjoyed.

‘Masters of the Universe’ Understands Something Many Audiences Have Forgotten

Some of the most beloved blockbusters ever made aren’t remembered because they changed cinema forever, they’re remembered because they’re endlessly entertaining. Audiences didn’t fall in love with Raiders of the Lost Ark because it solved every problem facing Hollywood, they fell in love with it because it was exciting. The same is true of movies like The Mummy, Back to the Future, and countless other adventure classics.

That doesn’t mean audiences should stop thinking critically about movies, and it certainly doesn’t mean every blockbuster deserves praise. Plenty of movies fail to deliver on their promises. A blockbuster doesn’t need to redefine a genre to be worthwhile, and it doesn’t need to become a cultural milestone. Sometimes its job is simply to provide a memorable night at the movies.

Not every blockbuster needs to change the industry, sometimes it’s enough to have a great time. And maybe audiences would enjoy more movies if they remembered that.

“And then like two months ago I had to write the thing for the yearbook or whatever the heck thing they make you write,” Lopez told Kimmel. “When I tell you, the tears. Two days it took me to write those things.”
