Fan-Favorite Mortal Kombat Character Has Heavy Presence In New Trailer
By Jennifer Asencio
| Published

Round Two: Fight! Mortal Kombat II is coming to theaters and bringing back a major legacy character who was omitted from the 2021 reboot: Johnny Cage. To top it off, they complimented the all-star cast of the first film with Karl Urban playing the role, freshly shaved after his final season as Butcher in The Boys. The final official trailer for the movie was released on April 9, 2026, one month ahead of the movie’s theatrical debut.
The Cage Connection
Mortal Kombat II reintroduces Cage after he was replaced in the lore by the movie-only character Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan. Cole’s storyline sees him as an MMA fighter, just like Johnny Cage, but it was revealed in the first movie that Cole has ties to a legendary Mortal Kombat warrior. While the new character was introduced in the film, he has to date not been made part of the game and was intended to be a bridge between the moviegoing audience and the Mortal Kombat world depicted in the video games.
However, new characters in established settings don’t always perform well with audiences, and Cole was a blatant Johnny Cage replacement. In the trailer, Johnny returns, and Cole is not even in the top-billed cast on IMDb, strongly hinting that there is a return to the lore fans were looking for in the first film, although the game and prior films put that emphasis on Liu Kang (played in these films by Ludi Lin). Fortunately for Cole Young, his martial arts style and intriguing lineage were popular enough on the cinematic front that fans are clamoring for him to be included in the game, and there have been strong hints that his character will be further explored in Mortal Kombat II.
A Reluctant Hero’s Journey

What this sets up is a situation where Cage could step in as a mentor for Cole, embracing the newer character in the Mortal Kombat canon by having this major legacy character embrace him in the movie. The fact that they both share the same profession makes it very likely that they will work together in some capacity, even if Cole is resistant to Cage at first.
The trailer we’ve been shown centers squarely on Johnny Cage and his hero’s journey that sees him called to the tournament unwillingly by Lord Raiden (Tadanobu Asano). What little dialogue is featured in the trailer features all the snark and one-liners we’ve come to expect from both Johnny Cage and Karl Urban, surrounded by a smorgasbord of martial arts extravaganza performed with the special skills we all know and love. If Kitana’s razor-fans featured in the trailer are any indication of what to expect, this is going to blow fans’ minds with its close adherence to the game.
A Noble Idea: Giving The Fans What They Want

That’s all we’re really anticipating from a Mortal Kombat movie. We don’t want deep philosophy or meaningful messaging. Mortal Kombat games are strictly about fighting, being the successor of Street Fighter and the spiritual guardian of games that have appeared since, like Killer Instinct and Soul Calibur. It has resonance and endless remake-ability because it has a simple format: a bunch of fighters in a tournament where there can be only one winner. It is a format that is so loved in games that the competitors of the Mortal Kombat games are also best sellers, even if the OG still takes the top spot.
This means that fans likely aren’t going into the movie expecting a whole lot of plot lines. All fans want is the fighting, with maybe a little explanation as to why they are fighting, and nothing more. Mortal Kombat II looks like it’s going to fulfill its role as a popcorn action flick without trying too hard to stray from that purpose, and audiences have been craving this sort of “check your brain at the door and come along for the ride” movie for a while. Even if it’s terrible, it will still be fun.

We’ll all find out when with the release of Mortal Kombat II, in theaters May 8, 2026.

Farrah Abraham’s Quid Pro Quo Hair Deal Goes Wrong
Fans are saying Farrah Abraham‘s hair is a mess, and so is this drama with her hairstylist!
The American television personality’s agreement with a hairstylist went sour after she refused to hold her end of the bargain despite Marseya ‘Slay’ Ochoa’s hard work.
Farrah Abraham became a household name on MTV’s “Teen Mom” and “16 and Pregnant” years ago and has stayed in the news for one drama or another since her television debut.
The Genesis Of Farrah Abraham And Her Hairstylist’s Tussle

The media personality and her daughter, Sophia, allegedly agreed to get their hair done by Ochoa free of charge in exchange for social media promotion. Still, the details of the terms and agreement reportedly got muddled up. Abraham and Ochoa took the drama to social media with pretty strong words for each other, including advice from the hairstylist to anyone thinking of striking a deal with Abraham.
Abraham promptly replied to Ochoa’s claims, calling her an inexperienced hairstylist who prefers to throw tantrums online over a plan she duly informed him about, which was that it would be impossible for her to post the collab until four days after their appointment.
The hairdresser added that she spent 12 hours working on Abraham’s hair, including detangling and coloring the extensions. Ochoa went further to share a clip of Abraham’s pre-styled hair, which went viral and attracted several comments from fans. As noted by The Daily Mail, the MTV alum uploaded an Instagram post on Monday thanking her glam team for dolling her and her daughter, Sophia, up, but excluded the hairdresser from the post.
The TV Personality Did Not Get The Public’s Approval Over Her Daughter’s Tattoo

Last year, Abraham and Sophia got into trouble for their mother-daughter dynamics with fans when the teenager revealed on Instagram that she got a tattoo of three massive bats on either side of her stomach.
As stated by The Blast, during the tattoo reveal, Abraham had initially thought her teen daughter had gotten pregnant but was relieved that was not the case. Recall that Abraham got pregnant with Sophia at 16, which may seem like a right justification for her concerns about Sophia, but social media users were not pleased.
Some commenters claimed the reality TV star was being so freehanded with her parenting and should not have given such a young girl permission to get tattoos at such a young age. Other social media users recommended the establishment of boundaries and rules to guide Sophia’s behavior and keep her in line due to her age.
Farrah Abraham’s Unique Birthday Gift To Her Daughter Set Tongues Wagging

During Sophia’s 14th birthday celebration, Abraham decided to gift her daughter with multiple facial piercings at a piercing party, where she was allowed to get a snakebite lip piercing and ear piercings for the occasion. The MTV star’s controversial gift caused an uproar on social media from fans who wondered why she did not think her 14-year-old daughter was too young for such a commitment.
Abraham fired back at the critics, tagging them parent shamers, acknowledging that she used to be one of them in the past, but things changed. She stressed that while she was in that category at some point, she removed herself upon learning that teenagers need a lot of compassion too while navigating life.
Abraham added that teens are faced with more pressing issues like alcohol addiction and underage sex, pushing piercings further down the list of bad things teens do. “Right now, Sophia is learning well-being, self-love, mental health, sex education, drug education, ADA-compliant education, before actions go beyond her learning. So she is prepared for all that life brings her way,” Abraham declared.
Years Later, The 34-Year-Old Faulted Her Exit From ‘Teen Mom’

Abraham, while on the hit show, pivoted into another area of her career, which she is now known for featuring in a fake “leaked” sex tape. The Blast shared that following the sex tape and her continued involvement in adult content creation/promotion, she was fired from the MTV show in 2017. Nearly a decade later, Abraham got candid about her exit from the show, saying that she was sent away unfairly and she should never have tolerated the form of abuse that came with her involvement in the adult entertainment industry.
She connected it to her history as a teenage mom and how the stigma still follows her around, including the judgment and the blame. The reality TV personality added: “And I just gotta say, like, if we look outside of this disgusting world that is just not correct, and it’s sinking, it’s teens were never included in equality and inclusion of proper contraception.”
Abraham had OnlyFans to bank on after she lost her means of livelihood, and this sorted her out financially, setting her apart from her former castmates on MTV. She also once revealed that her earnings on the platform reached millions of dollars annually, cutting across subscriptions and podcasts, which she hosts on the platform, independently of non-adult content.
Farrah Abraham Is Venturing Into The Murky Waters Of Politics

The reality star expanded her base for her 30s by announcing her intentions to venture into politics, specifically as the Mayor of Austin, Texas, in 2026. However, she got the timeline all muddled up as the next cycle is in 2028, which Abraham has described as a good development that would buy her more time.
She even published a campaign website while seeking political donations, although she now has to shift plans down her calendar. Abraham had previously claimed that her inspiration to pursue politics came from a mindset that women deserve a spot at the highest decision-making table. “I do believe more mothers and women need to be in government positions, and I say that in a nice way and with no disrespect to other government officials,” Abraham continued.
The media personality revealed that some women in her family, like her aunt and stepmother, worked and retired as government officials, but retired early due to environments that were not encouraging. Abraham continued that witnessing her family go through this made her believe a change was necessary.
Will Farrah Abraham and her hairstylist resolve things?

Kanye West’s France Concert Paused As Ban Looms
Kanye West has put his planned France concert on hold as pressure builds over whether he should even be allowed into the country.
The rapper announced that his Marseille show would be postponed just as French officials were reportedly considering blocking his entry over his past antisemitic remarks.
The decision adds another setback to his comeback tour, which has already faced fresh scrutiny in Europe over his recent controversies.
Kanye West Pulls Plug On Marseille Concert As Pressure Builds

Kanye West has officially postponed his upcoming show in Marseille, France, after concerns grew that French authorities could block him from entering the country.
The 48-year-old was originally set to perform on June 11 at Stade Vélodrome as part of his 2026 comeback tour.
Instead of waiting for a final decision from French leadership, West announced that he was stepping back from the show himself.
In a message shared on X Tuesday night, he wrote, “After much thought and consideration, it is my sole decision to postpone my show in Marseille, France until further notice.”
Fans were disappointed with the update but some still showed support to the musician. “Smart move taking the high road, Ye. Don’t let them bully you out of the whole tour. Fans got your back everywhere else,” person wrote.
Another commented, “Your decision is respected and hope you can play without all the unnecessary criticism,” while a third person added, “Respect the reflection, Ye. Real ones know the music hits different when the energy’s right. Take your time fans will be here when it’s back on.”
West Says He Does Not Want Fans Caught In The Fallout

While confirming the postponement, Kanye West also addressed his fans directly and framed the decision as an effort to keep them out of the growing controversy.
In a follow-up post, he acknowledged the long road he faces in rebuilding trust.
“I know it takes time to understand the sincerity of my commitment to make amends I take full responsibility for what’s mine but I don’t want to put my fans in the middle of it,” West wrote, adding, “My fans are everything to me Looking forward to the next shows See you at the top of the globe.”
In no time, the comments section was flooded with angry critics who took turns to slam West.
“This ain’t fixing all the hatred you spouted,” one person wrote. A second person shared, “If you truly care about your fans you would do the right thing and apologize like you actually mean it for the first time in your life.”
A third person commented, “Ain’t no one gaf what you gotta say, mentally unstable or not sh-t like that should’ve NEVER been said…the way you still have a platform is beyond me.”
Kanye West Faces Mounting Opposition From French Leaders

The postponement came after reports that France was actively considering banning Kanye West from performing in the country.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marseille Mayor Benoît Payan and French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez both argued that the rapper should not be welcomed into France.
Their concerns centered on West’s past antisemitic remarks and his decision to release a song last year titled “Heil Hitler.”
Reportedly, Payan opposed the event, saying he would not “allow Marseille to be a showcase for those who promote hatred and unapologetic Nazism.”
He previously declared that West was “not welcome” at the stadium, which he described as a symbol of unity for the city.
Similarly, Nuñez revealed he was “very determined” to stop West’s planned Marseille concert.
West’s France Setback Follows UK Festival Fallout

France is not the first European country where Kanye West’s comeback plans have run into serious trouble.
Just weeks earlier, the “I Wonder” crooner was barred from entering the United Kingdom after being announced as the headliner for all three nights of Wireless Festival in July.
That booking quickly unraveled. Several major sponsors pulled out after backlash over West’s involvement, and the entire festival was later canceled.
The collapse of that event was another sign of how deeply his reputation has been damaged in recent years.
West has also drawn widespread outrage in recent years over his antisemitic comments and stunts.
One of the biggest controversies came in 2025 when he used a Super Bowl ad to direct viewers to his Yeezy website, which featured swastika-emblazoned T-shirts.
The stunt intensified criticism and reignited anger over his previous rhetoric. However, West issued an apology for his antisemitic comments earlier this year through an ad in The Wall Street Journal.
Mental Health Expert Backs Kanye West’s Bipolar Disorder Claims

A few days ago, West received some support from a medical expert after blaming his past antisemitic comments on bipolar disorder and an undiagnosed brain injury.
In his January apology, the music icon said he “lost touch with reality” during manic episodes and admitted his actions were “reckless” and deeply harmful.
As The Blast reported, mental health expert Professor David Curtis of University College London revealed that West’s explanation was medically plausible, saying, “People with severe bipolar disorder can act in ways completely out of character.”
Curtis explained that manic episodes could lead to delusions, impulsivity, and extreme behavior, which may align with some of West’s public outbursts. However, support for the medical explanation did not erase criticism.
Bipolar UK stressed that mental illness could affect judgment but should not be used to excuse hate speech, while the Anti-Defamation League said West’s apology was “long overdue” and that accountability mattered most.

Guy Fieri Speaks Out On The Tate Brothers Backlash
Guy Fieri has responded to a viral moment in which he was seen interacting with Andrew Tate and Tristan Tate, sparking backlash from his fans and online users. The clip quickly circulated across social media, with users criticizing the Food Network star for associating with the controversial brothers who are facing legal trouble in some countries. Fieri clarified the situation, offering context about the brief encounter.
Guy Fieri Was Slammed For Greeting The Tate Brothers
On April 11, the Mayor of Flavortown was spotted in Miami, Florida, attending UFC 327. A viral clip spread online where Fieri, with his signature spiked hair and vibrant red long-sleeved top, exchanged greetings and handshakes with the controversial Tate brothers, who were accused of sexual trafficking and exploiting women, among other legal issues.
The brief interaction between the restaurateur and the influencers immediately created an online firestorm, with Fieri’s fans expressing their disappointment and anger.
“Ewwww @GuyFieri what the F-CK are you doing… This is f-cking b-llsh-t. F-ck you! Lost ALL respect from me a-sh-le,” one commented. Another wrote, “Apparently he has no morals either done watching him.” “Gross @GuyFieri. Seriously nasty a-s sh-t and f-ck flavor town,” another user added.
The Food Network Star Was ‘Devastated’
Following the viral video, Fieri addressed the issue on X, writing that he has seen the comments about him and what happened at the UFC event. “All I can say is that I’m devastated,” he wrote.
Fieri clarified the situation, saying, “I was there to see the fights and when I was walking through the venue, the Tate brothers stood up and said hello and that’s when the exchanged [sic] happened. I did not know them or about them before that moment.”
The chef doubled down on his stance, reiterating that he did not know the brothers. “I’ll never pretend to be a perfect person but let me be crystal clear, I do not know the Tate brothers nor do I support them in any way,” he concluded the post.
Guy Fieri’s Statement Gets Mixed Reactions

Some fans backed Fieri, saying that he shouldn’t apologize for simply acknowledging the Tate brothers and being a decent human being. “Anyone who watched the video could see you were INTRODUCED to them and you were being polite. You have NO need to apologize for being the cordial and polite person you are,” one commented.
“Don’t bend the knee to the woke cancel culture dude. Social media will catch you off guard and unhinged leftists will never be happy with what you say or do. It’s no win situation,” another user added.
Others, meanwhile, didn’t believe Fieri when he said he didn’t know the Tate brothers, with one saying, “You hadn’t heard of this pair of r-pist human traffickers over the past decade?” Another person wrote, “Bullsh-t. You are around UFC news… can’t be that obtuse.” “I used to watch all your tv Guy. You’ve turned into a right wing grifter that rubs shoulders with pedophiles and criminals. Shove that apology up your a-s big dog,” one commented.
Inside The Tate Brothers’ Legal Troubles
In December 2022, Andrew and Tristan were arrested in Romania and subsequently charged with human trafficking, rape, and forming an organized crime group. More charges were later added, including sex with a minor and money laundering. In 2025, the UK Crown Prosecution Service approved 21 charges for the Tates, including rape, sexual assault, and human trafficking.
The brothers, who have denied all the claims, were barred from leaving Romania following the charges. The travel ban was lifted in February 2025, and Andrew and Tristan flew back to Florida, where they are currently based. While they aren’t facing criminal charges in the U.S., the Tates are under active federal investigation.
Guy Fieri’s Past Controversies

Despite his stellar reputation as a Food Network star, Fieri has had his fair share of controversies over the years. In 2011, a former producer of “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives,” David Page, accused Fieri of making sexist comments, being homophobic, and displaying anti-Semitic behavior.
“Almost everyone who becomes a star in television develops an abnormal sense of self. In the worst-case scenario, they become surrounded by sycophants who tell them everything they want to hear,” Page said. Fieri responded, denying the accusations and calling Page “sadly desperate.”
In 2013, Fieri was caught on video in a physical altercation with his hairdresser, Ariel Ramirez, who was allegedly tossed out of the vehicle by Fieri. Following the incident, Fieri’s rep said, “A bunch of guys were messing around. Things got a little out of hand, but they’re all good now.”

Candace Owens Addresses Erika Kirk Pulling Out of Event
Political commentator Candace Owens has slammed Erika Kirk for pulling out of a Turning Point USA event alongside Vice President JD Vance at the last minute.
Taking to X on Tuesday, April 14, just hours after Erika, 37, confirmed she was cancelling her appearance at the University of Georgia due to alleged security threats, Owens, 36, claimed the circumstances were falsely reported.
“Stop. This is exhausting. You pulled out because of bad ticket sales. For the same reason TPFaith had to “reschedule” the Pastor’s Summit and various other events quietly,” Owens directed to Erika, referring to Turning Point USA Faith, a division of the organization that is staging the Fast Forward Pastors’ Summit in Texas on April 21. (It is unclear when the original scheduling was set.)
Owens’ post replied directly to Erika’s earlier X post that announced her event withdrawal. “I was so looking forward to tonight’s event at the @universityofga with our Vice President @JDVance, but after all our family has been through, I take my security team’s recommendations extremely seriously,” Erika had written.
Owens continued, “People don’t believe you and don’t line up for you because you struggle to tell the truth about even the most basic facts. Where is the video of Charlie appointing you as CEO weeks before his death?” (Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA and Erika’s late husband, was assassinated while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on September 10, 2025. He was 31 years old.)
A report by Fox 5 Atlanta on Tuesday stated that Vance, 41, said on stage that he had consulted with the Secret Service in light of “threats” that had been directed towards Erika.

Candace Owens Jason Kempin/Getty Images
Owens, who has maintained an ongoing feud with Erika in the wake of Charlie’s death, disputed the claim, writing in her post, “The Secret Service sits above your security team. Were there actually a viable threat, the vice president would not have continued the event.”
Owens concluded her post with one final criticism aimed at Erika and her Turning Point USA team. “Your closest threat is the s*** public relations team you hired that continues to operate under the delusion that they are smarter than the public. They aren’t,” Owens wrote.
Turning Point USA spokesperson Andrew Kolvet detailed Erika’s no-show while stepping into her place at Tuesday’s event. “I’m on stage here instead of our friend Erika Kirk because unfortunately she has received some very serious threats in her direction, which is terrible,” Kolvet told the crowd. “It’s a terrible reflection on the state of reality and the state of the country.”
Vance also commented on Erika’s absence, telling the room, “Well, first of all, I love Erika. And I know that she did get some threats. And, you know, about two hours ago, Andrew, I was a little worried that we were going to have to cancel the event because Erika was not going to come, and she was very worried about it,” Vance said. “I said, ‘You know what? Let’s let Erika do what she needs to do for herself and her family.’ The people telling you that Erica wasn’t grieving her husband are full of s***, and we need to be honest. But if your instinct is to go after a young mother because she’s grieving in a way that you find wrong, well, why don’t you stay in your lane and mind your own business?”

Erika Kirk Olivier Touron / AFP
Owens’ feud with Erika was ignited when she started sharing conspiracy theories about Charlie’s murder via social media. The posts led Erika to ask Owens to “stop” during a December 2025 interview with CBS News.
Despite a “very productive conversation” between the duo in the weeks that followed, Owens continued to speak out against Erika at the beginning of 2026, leaking apparent audio of Erika speaking to Turning Point USA team members two weeks after Charlie’s death.
Owens claimed at the time that Erika’s tone was audibly “upbeat” and “off putting.”

RHOSLC Star Bronwyn Newport and Husband Todd Bradley Split After 9 Years!
RHOSLC Star Bronwyn Newport and Husband Todd Bradley Split After 9 Years!
Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Bronwyn Newport and her husband Todd Bradley are officially calling it quits — and the split comes right as their marriage drama is playing out on screen.
After nine years of marriage, Bronwyn, 40, and Todd, 65, have separated. A rep for Bronwyn confirms to PEOPLE that “after thoughtful consideration, Bronwyn Newport and Todd Bradley have separated.” According to her rep, “This was a mutual decision made with care and respect for one another,” adding that the former couple is asking for privacy as they navigate the fallout.
Fans of RHOSLC have already watched the cracks form in real time. Bronwyn Newport revealed that rumors exploded on Twitter accusing her husband, Todd Bradley, of cheating after a stranger claimed they saw him on a flight to New York looking at photos of other women on his phone and possibly communicating with someone behind her back.
Bronwyn said she believed the tip because the person provided specific flight details, and when she confronted Todd, he dismissed it as “gossip and nonsense” supposedly started by her friends. Unconvinced and furious after receiving screenshots of the claims, Bronwyn admitted she told Todd to stay at a hotel and give her space.
Despite the drama, Bronwyn stunned Whitney by admitting that sexy photos wouldn’t necessarily bother her if it was something they discussed beforehand, even saying she might consider an open marriage. In season five, she recalled a moment when her daughter Gwen allegedly caught Todd texting another woman, which led to a confrontation.
Bronwyn stressed that her marriage has had “very low lows,” explaining that she wanted the other women to see her vulnerability and understand that she “bleed[s] the same way” they do and “cry about things” too.
And of course, no RHOSLC season would be complete without a wild rumor. In Season 6, Episode 8, Angie Katsanevas admitted she “couldn’t hold it in any longer” and accused Lisa of spreading gossip that Todd was allegedly “making out” with one of Angie’s friends — “while farting the entire time.”
Bronwyn first met Todd in San Francisco while working in finance. The two exchanged emails, fell in love, and eventually tied the knot in two ceremonies in 2016. Nearly a decade later, their once-polished marriage has unraveled — on camera and off.
And now, with the separation confirmed, fans are left wondering: was this ending inevitable all along?

Born Again’ Season 2 Officially Reminds Us Why the Original Netflix Series Was So Perfect
Editor’s note: The below contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Episode 5.
Only five episodes in, and Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 has managed to rectify many of its first season mistakes. We could go on about how Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) feels like himself again, or how the full-time return of Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) is a step in the right direction, but that’s only the beginning of it. “The Grand Design” recaptures the magic of the original Daredevil by cleverly balancing superhero action, courtroom drama, and religious themes that speak to the Marvel hero’s entire being. While the episode at large is an impressive homage to the Netflix show, there’s one sequence in particular that really seals the deal.
‘Daredevil: Born Again’s Foggy Flashback Perfectly Encapsulates the Show’s Most Compelling Theme
Following the shooting of Vanessa Fisk (Ayelet Zurer), “The Grand Design” is framed around a combination of flashbacks to the time before the first season of Netflix’s Daredevil as Kingpin’s bride fights for her life. Simultaneously, Daredevil and Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) attempt to do the same by evading the Anti-Vigilante Task Force, which eventually takes them to the late Father Lantom’s (Peter McRobbie) old church. Not only does this place hold significance for both of them, but it represents the very ideals that Matt claims to stand for, ideals that are soon challenged. When the Task Force comes knocking, Matt can’t give up his life for Bullseye. He abandons the wounded assassin and heads for the hills. Yet, upon reaching the edge of the church grounds, he has a revelation.
Earlier, “The Grand Design” gives viewers a glimpse of a time when Elden Henson‘s Foggy Nelson helped his old childhood bully, Lionel “Ray” McCoy (Nathan Wallace). After getting him out of any extra jail time, Foggy took things a step further by sacrificing Nelson & Murdock’s savings to help Ray get out of town before his old mob contacts could kill him. It’s this example of pure mercy that encourages Matt to be a better man. In the end, he goes back for Bullseye, regardless of his own personal feelings regarding Foggy’s killer, choosing to save his life. It’s no wonder that “The Grand Design” is a triumph of an episode. Between its basic structure, powerful ideas, and strong returning cast members (Henson is perfect as ever), it has managed to catch lightning in a bottle. What really makes this flashback scene stick out, this momentary recollection on Matt’s part, is the internal conflict it represents for the titular hero.
‘Daredevil’s Love Interests, Ranked by Chemistry With Matt Murdock
Daredevil in the streets and in the sheets.
After spending much of last season rediscovering his faith, Matt has struggled under the rule of Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) to be the man who Father Lantom and his mother, Sister Maggie Grace (Joanne Whalley), knew he could be. But thinking back on what Foggy did for Ray, a man who once tormented him as a child and couldn’t care less about him, he is reminded that mercy is not for those who “deserve” it, but for those who need it. Although Foggy wasn’t Catholic, his example of what it means to be merciful spoke to Matt on a deep, spiritual level back then — and it does the same in the present.
‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Is a Reminder of Matt Murdock’s Driving Force
Matt knows that without his help, Fisk’s Task Force will kill Bullseye — and while a part of him may want the assassin dead, he is reminded by Foggy’s example (not to mention the stained-glass depictions on the literal church around him) that “mercy” is far better than revenge. As Cox recently put it in an interview with Collider:
“I don’t believe that, in his right mind, Matt wants anyone dead. I think the preservation of life is sacred to him. No matter who that person is. And so that’s part of the turmoil that he lives with. That’s part of the torment, is not feeling such animosity towards another human being, but also knowing that the remedy for that is to pray for them and to give them and to give them another chance. That’s why he’s such an interesting superhero, because of his unwavering faith.”
Matt’s struggle to forgive Bullseye is brilliantly contrasted with Foggy’s merciful act toward his old childhood bully. This is the type of material where Daredevil, as a character, absolutely thrives. The original series was often full of moments like these. Even Daredevil and Bullseye’s discussion about God’s providential plan feels remarkably similar to Daredevil Season 3. With “The Grand Design,” Matt Murdock has once more been “born again,” hoping to be the type of hero who would make Foggy proud.
