Star Trek’s Best Director Just Explained The Stupidest Thing About Starfleet Academy

Star Trek’s Best Director Just Explained The Stupidest Thing About Starfleet Academy

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

Starfleet Academy has proven especially frustrating for older Star Trek fans because it is a decidedly mixed bag. At times, the show is capable of greatness, delivering well-acted high drama that builds off some of the franchise’s greatest characters and stories. Other times (and far too often in the first half of Season 1), the show is bogged down by comedy that seems as juvenile as it is nonsensical.

Perhaps the greatest example of this is Darem, an alien whose unique physiology means that he vomits glitter like a character straight out of anime. It’s truly bizarre, deeply unfunny “comedy” that left many of us watching to wonder why it was included in the show at all. However, iconic Star Trek actor turned director Jonathan Frakes recently revealed the answer: Starfleet Academy coshowrunner Noga Landau is inexplicably obsessed with glitter.

The Fish Man Cometh

Why was Jonathan Frakes commenting on the glitter vomit in the first place? He recently directed an episode of Starfleet Academy (“300th Night”) that once again featured cadet Darem puking rainbow-colored glitter. In an interview with TrekMovie, they asked the director a fairly straightforward question: “What were your thoughts on glitter vomit?”

Now, Frakes has a well-earned reputation as a straight shooter, which is a good thing. Many directors would have responded to this question with some PR pablum about how this was a great way to reach the young, target audience of Starfleet Academy. However, Frakes gave a very honest reaction to the question, one that indicated he was just as confused as the rest of us.

Star Trek’s Most Embarrassing Moment

After noting “they showed me the glitter vomit from the earlier episode,” he bluntly stated, “it seems absurd.” He then said that the glitter vomit “was minimal” (which is true, it only appeared once, briefly in the episode), but that this weird characteristic of Darem is “established.” Surprisingly, he then revealed why we have glitter vomit in a Star Trek show at all: “Glitter has been a runner with Noga Landau, who’s the showrunner with Kurtzman.”

According to Jonathan Frakes, Landau is effectively obsessed with glitter, and she insisted on adding even more of it to “300th Night.” In addition to having Darem once again puke glitter, Frakes confirmed that “She wanted a lot of glitter in that opening sequence, where I have them walking down the hallway and slow-mo and fast-mo, and they’re about to start partying because they’re done with their school year.” While other directors might have gone along with this without question, veteran Trek icon Frakes couldn’t help but push back against this request.

“I said, really? We’re gonna throw glitter in the hallways?” At this point, Frakes sounds like he had to stop himself from criticizing this creative decision. “So that became a…” he trailed off, before ending his statement with something of a non-sequitur: “She ends all of her emails with me with the glitter.”

Taste The Rainbow

While very insightful, this interview is proof that the answers to our biggest questions are often relatively simple. Why does Darem inexplicably puke glitter like he’s an anime character trying to get featured in a reaction GIF? Simple: one of the showrunners is obsessed with glitter!

This interview also confirms something that cynical critics had long been speculating: that the execs in charge of Starfleet Academy are obsessed with jamming their own ideas into the show, even if they don’t really gel with the franchise. Jonathan Frakes most likely balked at the inclusion of glitter vomit because it doesn’t look or feel like Star Trek in any way. But Noga Landau and especially Alex Kurtzman have decided that Star Trek will be whatever they think it should be, regardless of what suits the franchise or makes the fans happy.

When (not if) Starfleet Academy gets canceled, mark my words: the people who have been doing their best to drive fans away will now complain that the show died because not enough fans kept watching. Why did longtime fans stop watching the Star Trek show that Paramount vomited all over for a cheap laugh? If you’re genuinely asking that question, congratulations. You now have the intellectual and emotional maturity to write for Alex Kurtzman!

‘The Rookie’s Best Season 8 Episode Goes Completely Different With Full Zombie Horror

Published

on

Nathan Fillion as John Nolan and Jenna Dewan as Bailey Nune in The Rookie Season 8

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for The Rookie Season 8, Episode 10.It’s crucial for procedurals to come up with a winning formula that entices viewers to tune in every week. But it’s just as important for these types of dramas to also switch things up every now and then to keep things exciting. ABC’s The Rookie has been repeating a few storylines lately, especially with recurring villains like Monica Stevens (Bridget Regan) and Oscar Hutchinson (Matthew Glave). However, this week’s episode allows them to try on a new genre with a lot of success.

‘The Rookie’ Depicts a Zombie-Like Attack on the Crew

When Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) starts out the day by warning everyone that things are a little too quiet for the Mid-Wilshire Police Department, you know that something dangerous is coming their way. Dash (Beckett Hawley), the drone kid from Season 7, who also popped up in last week’s episode, decides to go on a ride-along with John Nolan (Nathan Fillion). Anytime someone innocent gets embedded with the gang, I’m convinced it’s going to be a life-threatening outing. Nolan, along with Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) and Miles Penn (Deric Augustine) get tasked to do a wellness check at the abandoned Westview Hospital. A crew of clean-up workers hasn’t been heard of for a while (and of course, there’s no cell or radio service there). Right away, they see a dead body and hear garbled screams. Taking a page from The Walking Dead, all of the workers have become some kind of bloodthirsty zombies, who immediately attack the cops.

‘The Rookie’ Completely Shocked Us in Just 3 Unexpected Minutes

Nathan Fillion’s long-running ABC drama left us speechless.

The police quickly realize that the crew must have been exposed to some kind of neurotoxin, making them completely lose control. They spend many scenes fighting off the zombies and running for their lives throughout the creepy hospital and its grounds. Miles does prove his worth, and eventually, Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) and Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) show up once they realize Nolan and Harper have been missing for so long. But in a tragic turn of events, Lucy is attacked by a man with a knife. In their struggle, he ends up stabbed and dies next to a stunned Lucy. When Tim shows up, he takes on the role of her supervisor instead of her boyfriend, asking her standard questions that are required when someone is killed on the job. Lucy is clearly shocked, and after being examined at the hospital, meets with Nolan as her union rep.

By the episode’s end, we see a very beaten-up Lucy experiencing flashbacks to the moments of her attack and of the man’s death. Tim tells her everything will be okay, but the last shot is her crying on the sofa alone. Although this is a heartbreaking scene to watch, I think this death could unlock an extremely compelling storyline for Lucy, especially if The Rookie writers decide to include nuances of Lucy’s past trauma to explore this recent event.

‘The Rookie’ Season 8, Episode 10 Sees Another Wrinkle in the Glasser Case

Unfortunately for Wesley Evers (Shawn Ashmore), the Liam Glasser (Seth Gabel) case is falling apart yet again. Ryan Dearbourne (Patrick Stafford) is the patsy that Glasser manipulated last season to take the fall for his crimes. Dearbourne has schizophrenia, but in this week’s episode, he’s has his symptoms under control and is going to testify in a deposition as the star witness for Wesley’s case. Initially, Dearbourne seems like he’s really going to helpwith the prosecurtors (which had already taken a hit when Glasser’s attorney got Nyla to admit to her inappropriate conduct). Dearbourne offers clear testimony, with heartbreaking details about Glasser using Dearbourne’s schizophrenia to coerce him into believing he had committed horrifying murders. It seems like Wesley might actually be able to put Glasser behind bars for good.

But then, Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) calls Wesley to let him know that Dearbourne had some sort of “incident” and that he’s missing from the facility where he was living. Wesley walks into his office to see an agitated Dearbourne stabbing himself in the leg repeatedly with a shard of glass. This is one of the more gruesome sights for The Rookie, but it’s even harder to watch knowing that Dearbourne can’t help himself. Wesley is eventually able to talk him down, and the police arrive to take over the situation. At the hospital, Wesley learns that Dearbourne had a large amount of amphetamines in his system, which can be catastrophic for someone with schizophrenia. Glasser’s smug lawyer, Malcolm (Sean Patrick Thomas), shows up to brag about this being another snag in Wesley’s case, which leads Angela and Wesley to believe the lawyer has something to do with Dearbourne’s breakdown. Unfortunately, it looks like Glasser might be even closer to becoming a free man.

Wade Asks Bailey for Help With an Investigation in ‘The Rookie’

In D.C., Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan) is getting used to her new job at the Pentagon when Wade Grey (Richard T. Jones) calls to ask her for a favor. In a prior episode, the team had captured a career criminal named Everett (Jeffrey Vincent Parise), and it turns out he has a secret connection to the Pentagon, but Wade can’t figure out what. He asks Bailey to go check out an office and see who answers. When Bailey knocks on the door, a mysterious woman with an interesting tattoo comes out, but quickly brushes Bailey off. Bailey doesn’t get any answers, except that this woman is someone to keep an eye on. The woman seems intent on watching Bailey as well. I was hoping to get a little more time away from Bailey’s character since she’s gotten so misguided lately, but it looks like The Rookie is setting up another investigation where Bailey will be involved.

We don’t get a lot of developments in the personal lives of the officers in this week’s episode. However, we do see that Luna (Angel Parker) and Wade are still going through it, now living separately until they can work things out. Wade suggests that Luna quit her job if she really cares about saving their marriage, but this ask just made me kind of dislike Wade. Not trusting his wife enough with her feelings towards her hot doctor co-worker and asking her to give up a fulfilling career that she loves feels icky. It’s hard to root for them if it comes at the expense of Luna’s happiness. All in all, it was exciting to see a full-on zombie attack that helped the show experience a much-needed change of pace.

New episodes of The Rookie air on Monday nights on ABC, with episodes available to stream on Hulu in the U.S.

Prince Harry And Meghan ‘At A Crossroads,’ Expert Warns

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at the Project Healthy Minds World Mental Health Day Gala

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be approaching a pivotal moment in their careers as they balance philanthropy with entertainment and business ventures.

A PR expert revealed that the royal couple appears to be at a “crossroads,” needing to decide whether to focus fully on global charitable work or lean into lifestyle entrepreneurship.

This report comes on the heels of Meghan Markle’s brand, As Ever, ending its partnership with Netflix, and several projects from Archewell Productions remaining in development limbo.

According to PR expert Mayah Riaz, Harry and Meghan may be approaching a pivotal moment in their professional lives as they now face an important decision about how they want to position themselves publicly.

Speaking to The Mirror, Riaz suggested the couple are at a “crossroads” and must choose whether to focus entirely on global philanthropy with “measurable impact, or fully embrace lifestyle entrepreneurship and own it unapologetically.”

Since stepping back from royal duties and relocating to the United States, Harry and Meghan have attempted to balance charitable work with projects in the media and entertainment world.

However, Riaz believes straddling both areas may have created confusion about their overall brand. “In the current media climate, confusion is the quickest route to indifference,” she explained.

Riaz also pointed out that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex no longer benefit from the institutional support of the British monarchy.

“Without that framework,” she said, “they are competing in a very crowded celebrity marketplace.”

The expert added, “In today’s world, star power alone is not enough. You need a clear lane and a compelling reason for people to keep watching.”

Prince Harry And Meghan’s Royal Titles May Not Guarantee Lasting Influence, Expert Says

Although Harry and Meghan remain internationally recognized figures, Riaz suggested that titles alone cannot guarantee long-term influence or relevance.

She added that while the couple previously drew attention through revelations about royal life, “controversy within the royal family does not automatically translate into opportunity for those outside it.”

The PR expert also noted that Harry and Meghan “initially generated empathy” by sharing their story; however, it has now lost its luster as their story has been “told from many angles.”

“To reignite that spark, they need a chapter that feels fresh and forward-looking. This should be about less commentary on what went wrong, more clarity on what they are building next,” Riaz added.

Meanwhile, Meghan’s lifestyle brand As Ever recently ended its partnership with Netflix, marking another shift in the couple’s professional trajectory.

The brand confirmed the decision in a statement shared with ABC News, and Netflix also acknowledged the end of the collaboration, praising Meghan’s vision.

In addition to the duchess’s brand’s separation from Netflix, Harry and Meghan are reportedly facing uncertainty surrounding several other projects with the streaming platform through their company Archewell Productions.

In August 2023, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they would produce a film adaptation of “Meet Me at the Lake” by author Carley Fortune, after Netflix reportedly paid about $3 million for the rights to the bestselling novel.

However, nearly three years later, the project is still considered to be in development and has yet to secure a director or cast, according to sources who spoke with Page Six.

One Hollywood insider suggested the lengthy development timeline has raised eyebrows in the industry, noting: “Three years in development for a movie like this at Netflix isn’t good.”

NBA Cancels Hawks’ Promo Celebrating Atlanta Strip Club

Published

on

UPDATE — 3/9/26 at 6:33 p.m.: The NBA has canceled the Atlanta Hawks’ proposed Magic City Monday promotion, scheduled for Monday, March 16, and meant to celebrate local strip club Magic City.

“When we became aware of the Atlanta Hawks’ scheduled promotion, we reached out to Hawks leadership to better understand their plans and rationale,” commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement on Monday, March 9. “While we appreciate the team’s perspective and their desire to move forward, we have heard significant concerns from a broad array of league stakeholders, including fans, partners and employees. I believe canceling this promotion is the right decision for the broader NBA community.”

Original story below.

San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet is calling on the Atlanta Hawks to rethink their planned “Magic City Monday” proposal.

Magic City is an Atlanta strip club that Hawks ownership explained is an “iconic cultural institution” when it announced the promotion on Wednesday, February 25.

“The Hawks failed to acknowledge that this place is, as the business itself boasts, ‘Atlanta’s premier strip club,’” Kornet, 30, wrote in a post to Medium on Monday March 2.

He continued, “The NBA should desire to protect and esteem women, many of whom work diligently every day to make this the best basketball league in the world. We should promote an atmosphere that is protective and respectful of the daughters, wives, sisters, mothers, and partners that we know and love.”

“Allowing this night to go forward without protest would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society,” Kornet wrote.

The Hawks first announced that their March 16 game against the Orlando Magic would honor Magic City in a press release that highlighted the club’s impact on sports, music and culture in Atlanta.

“This collaboration and theme night is very meaningful to me after all the work that we did to put together [Starz documentary] Magic City: An American Fantasy,” team owner and docuseries producer Jami Gertz said. “The iconic Atlanta institution has made such an incredible impact on our city and its unique culture.”

The planned promotion would bring Magic City’s DJ to State Farm Arena as well as their “world famous” lemon pepper wings and limited edition collaborative hoodies. Rapper T.I. will discuss the documentary during a pregame live recording of the “Hawks AF” podcast and at halftime, he will perform “some of his well-known tracks,” according to the release.

58 Years Ago Today, This 1967 Classic Now Considered One of the Greatest Albums Ever Took Over the Charts and Became No. 1

Published

on

Alias (Bob Dylan) sits at a bar table surrounded by liquor bottles and glasses in 'Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid'

Bob Dylans 1967 album John Wesley Harding went against the grain when it was first released. 1967 was the year of psychedelia, led by The Beatles and the release of their legendary album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Dylan’s folksy, introspective tunes seemed to have no place in that world, but Dylan was never one to follow the trends. He has always been the kind of musician to release whatever he wants, regardless of what the music industry might be pushing for at a certain time. Back then, this album was purposely recorded and released without fanfare. Bob Dylan didn’t want to bring attention to it or do any kind of publicity, just let it find its way to fans organically. It worked. The album topped the UK charts and became a huge success immediately after its release.

This Bob Dylan Album Quietly Topped the Charts 58 Years Ago

When Bob Dylan released John Wesley Harding, he was making a statement in more ways than one. For one, this was his first release after his recovery from a very serious motorcycle accident that led to his withdrawal from the public eye for over a year. There was little to no information about what happened to him at the time, and a lot of people speculated that he was dead. After the accident, he secluded himself in his house in Woodstock and turned very introspective. This time of isolation and reflection had even his closest friends worried. One of George Harrison‘s most beautiful love songs, “I’d Have You Anytime,” was written while he was visiting Dylan in Woodstock during his recovery, and he grew concerned over his friend’s dour mood.

But Dylan wasn’t brooding. He was getting ready for his next step creatively. The following year, with no warning or promotion, he released John Wesley Harding. “I asked Columbia to release it with no publicity and no hype, because this was the season of hype,” he said at the time. He didn’t even put out a single for the album, just releasing it quietly and letting the songs speak for themselves.

Despite the lack of promotion, or “hype,” as Dylan put it, the record did incredibly well, competing even with The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper and The Rolling Stones’ Their Satanic Majesties Request, two very extravagant albums that dominated the music industry that year.

John Wesley Harding’s Great Reception

In 1968, with no promotion or singles, John Wesley Harding topped the UK charts and reached No. 2 on the American charts. Even in “the season of hype,” as Bob Dylan put it, good music still found its way to the public, even if no one pushed it. The record had gone gold in just two months after its release, and in 2003, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it among the Greatest Albums of All Time.

“Dylan’s voice has grown fuller and warmer, as this album shows us. The cynical edge is gone. He went off the bike and his life flashed before him and he is glad to be alive. He holds notes much longer now than he used to and, like much of his music and lyrics in the past, the songs are deceptively simple,” Rolling Stone Magazine wrote in 1968. “He takes clichés from all of pop music and changes all their faces so that he ends up implying the use of a cliché rather than actually using it, and you find, as in the jazz soloists, a marvelously subtle turn which transforms a possible cliché into a new statement.”

Bob Dylan’s Greatest Diss Song Still One of the Best Songs Ever Written

This classic Bob Dylan song continues to be debated.

Indeed, while the psychedelic era was a beautiful and rich time in rock music, to stay true to one’s own style despite where the world is going and not caring about seeing a reward, that’s a statement in itself. It’s clear, as the 1968 review speculates, that the incident played a huge role in how the musician chose to present himself and this record. In the end, it was about showing the world something that was meaningful to him, whether people bought it or not.

“The reaction is mixed. But that’s to be expected. Wasn’t it always mixed? No matter what move he made, didn’t they regret that he made any move at all?” The review goes on, adding that they’re stoning him again when he’s trying to go home.”

Dylan brought us all home with this album, and 58 years later, it’s still the masterpiece it was back then.

So, I’m sure Vanessa and Eva are talking to the kids about the clinic that will have the plaque honoring their dad Doug—then Joey stops by and that sends vanessa Deanna into a tail spin with Vanessa on Beyond the Gates.

Joey tells Deanna it’s nice to meet her. Then the angry teen goes off on Vanessa asking what kind of man comes in here, dedicates a building to your dead husband, and drops all that money unless he’s getting something in return. Clearly, you’re serving up! Vanessa’s mortified.

Lindsey Vonn Shows Off Bandaged Leg During Workout After 2026 Olympics Crash

Lindsey Vonn is still struggling to stand on her own as she recovers from a gruesome injury that almost cost the Olympic skier her left leg — but she’s still in the gym working out.

The gold medalist, 41, posted a video via her Instagram Story on Monday, March 9, showing her seated and pulling a rope on a machine in the gym while her leg, still in a cast, remained elevated.

“Finding ways to work,” Vonn, wrote over the video.

Vonn underwent multiple leg surgeries after she crashed just seconds into her run at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy on February 8. She had been skiing on a torn ACL. Vonn was airlifted off the course and did not return home until March 1.

She shared an update with fans on February 23, where she revealed that the injury was even worse than it looked.

Dr. Tom Hackett saved my leg,” Vonn said. “He saved my leg from being amputated. He did what’s called a fasciotomy, where he cut open both sides of my leg and kind of filleted it open so to speak, let it breathe, and he saved me.”

She continued, “I always talk about [how] everything happens for a reason, but if I hadn’t torn my ACL, which I would have torn anyway with this crash, if I hadn’t done that, Tom wouldn’t have been there. He wouldn’t have been able to save my leg, so I feel very lucky and grateful for him, for the six hour surgery he put in on Wednesday to rebuild it, which went amazingly well.”

“Definitely some hard times but still thankful… still working hard,” she captioned the post. “The only goal is to get healthy. One day at a time. #icandothis.”

That same day, she opened up about losing her spot as No. 1 in the world and being unable to reclaim it amid her injury.

“Well… I’ve had the red leader bib from the first race of the season until now, but in all likelihood tomorrow will be my last day as #1,” she wrote via Instagram. “At the beginning of the season no one would have ever believed I would be even close to this position. And I bet people would have laughed if it was even suggested. But winning the title was my goal… and I came painfully close to achieving it.”
