For a game series all about defending clients in the court of law, it only makes sense that there would be a consistent rivalry between Ace Attorney series protagonist Phoenix Wright and the leading prosecutor, Miles Edgeworth. Snake has faced off against many powerful villains throughout the Metal Gear series, yet the deeper connections and lasting impact of his rivalry with Liquid Snake in Metal Gear Solid are easily a step above the rest. Acting as the primary antagonist of Metal Gear Solid, Liquid stands at the forefront of some of the game’s most iconic moments, including his reveal as the true identity of Master Miller and their shirtless battle on top of the wreckage of Metal Gear Rex.

What really makes Liquid the premier rival for Solid Snake is how they both share origins as soldiers created by cloning the legendary Big Boss. While many other video game rivalries are of a singular version of two characters, the rivalry between Link and Ganon spans across multiple timelines, reincarnations, and universes. For as long as there is an entity that seeks to abuse the Triforce of Power, there will always be one who utilizes the Triforce of Courage, standing up for what is right. This timeless rivalry of good and evil is at the heart of almost every game in The Legend of Zelda series, no matter what form Ganon takes.

While Link has a relatively similar look in most of the games, Ganon has taken on many different forms and styles, whether he be a boar wizard, the Gerudo warrior Ganondorf, or a manifestation of hatred and anger itself. From the first game in the series on NES to the latest games on Nintendo Switch, this rivalry has waged on in many different forms, each symbolic of the timeless plight for righteousness and good triumphing over evil.

‘Mortal Kombat’ Games (1992–Present)

Interestingly enough, Scorpion and Sub-Zero didn’t start off as direct rivals, as they both just happened to be the most memorable and iconic characters in the original Mortal Kombat, with many parallels of being color-palette swaps and using converging elements of fire and ice. This status of becoming series icons placed them in the position to constantly be battling against one another, given greater lore connecting the two in a battle of revenge. However, as multiple different characters have taken on the mantle of Scorpion and Sub-Zero respectively, some versions of this rivalry have had the duo grow into unlikely companions.

However, no matter what reason these two have for facing off against one another, their ruthlessly gory battles have stood at the forefront of Mortal Kombat as it evolved and grew more and more with each additional entry. By the time that the Mortal Kombat games became at the forefront of narrative storytelling in fighting games, this rivalry was given the justice it deserves and grew alongside the series itself.

Cloud Strife and Sephiroth

‘Final Fantasy VII’ Games (1997–Present)

With so many different moving pieces and symbolic flourishes in the story and mythos of Final Fantasy VII, the battles between Cloud Strife and Sephiroth stand as the core that brings everything together for a rivalry that defines the fate of the world. With the duo sharing a psychological bond and trauma thanks to their time as former soldiers, they soon foster a deep-rooted hatred for one another. This hatred only grows worse as the game goes on, with Cloud learning more about his past and Sephiroth committing more evil deeds, most infamously his murder of Aerith Gainsborough.

This grows to massive stakes as Sephiroth attempts to bring about the end of the world in the climax of Final Fantasy VII, with Cloud and his allies fighting to stop him once and for all. While the rivalry itself is relatively muted in the original game, it has been massively explored and delved into more in spinoffs and especially the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy.

Fighting games as a genre lend themselves to rivalries more than any other genre, as even outside of the game’s world, facing off against another player inherently creates a rivalry between the two players, whether it be seriously competitive or easygoing fun. In the world of fighting games, no singular rivalry symbolizes this inherent strength, like Ryu and Ken from Street Fighter, two best friends who trained under the same master to be the greatest fighters in the world.

Ryu and Ken’s rivalry does not come from a place of hatred, but instead from constant friendship and respect for one another as they fight their hardest against one another to bring out the best in each other. It’s a beautiful rivalry that cuts to the heart of fighting games as a genre and has only grown more prominent with each additional entry. More impactful is that Ryu and Ken have the same gameplay archetype, sharing special moves but having enough distinguishing differences to set them apart.

Mario and Bowser

In terms of the iconic status of a video game rivalry, it’s difficult for anything to compete with the most iconic video game character of all time facing off against the most iconic video game villain of all time. While Bowser wasn’t the first villain to cross Mario’s path, since Mario’s origins trace back to the arcades with Donkey Kong, it cannot be denied that the constant battles against the king of koopas and this plucky plumber have made their rivalry legendary.

It’s a rivalry that has been explored in many different ways across the over 100 different Mario games, although often it takes the form of Bowser being a vengeful final boss responsible for Mario’s journey in the first place. Even in games where Bowser isn’t the main villain, his presence and hatred of Mario are always known and apparent. It simply isn’t a Mario game without Bowser, and Bowser wouldn’t be nearly as impactful a villain without his exceptional contrast with Mario.

Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes has raised eyebrows with an ominous post about her child’s “health and safety” while serving a prison sentence for fraud.

“I don’t get angry often. Tonight, I am,” Holmes, 42, tweeted on Friday, September 25. “People put my child’s health and safety at risk. They knowingly and consciously chose this path.”

She then warned, “If protecting my child means burning bridges, I’ll burn them to light the way. Time to sleep. I’ll grab the match tomorrow.”

It was not immediately clear who or what Holmes was directing her tweet toward, though she included an AI-generated image of her lighting a match on a bridge. Holmes eventually replied with an apparent non sequitur, sharing a photo of her and one of her children on an airboat. (Holmes and partner Billy Evans share two children.)

Later, Holmes started trolling people who criticized her for bringing up “health and safety” since she was convicted of four federal counts of fraud and conspiracy in 2022. Her company Theranos shut down in 2018 amid allegations that they misled the public about the capabilities of their fingerprick blood-testing technology, thereby putting patients at significant risk.

“Erm. The company you founded and the lies you told also – I believe – put countless people’s health and safety at risk,” one person wrote, to which Holmes responded, “Can the chat send this guy some x money to get a more flattering profile photo. Literally anything would be better.”

“Is this a threat?” someone else asked, to which Holmes clarified, “A promise.”

“Standard playbook. Be the villain – get caught – play the victim,” a third person chimed in.

Holmes shot back, “Standard playbook, be a nobody, play the sage, be the r*****.”

The disgraced former CEO has been unusually active on X this week, even as she continues to serve her 135-month sentence at the Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas. Last week, it was reported that Holmes will be granted an early release in 2027, at which time she is expected to transition to a halfway house in Del Valle, Texas. (Holmes’ business partner and one-time boyfriend, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, was sentenced to nearly 13 years in federal prison and ordered to also pay a share of the $452 million in restitution to their victims.)

Holmes and her attorneys have repeatedly asked President Donald Trump to either commute her sentence or issue a full pardon. On Friday, September 25, she praised Trump’s political fortunes despite a gloomy midterms forecast for Republicans, a historically low approval rating, rising gas and diesel prices, an ongoing war in Iran and numerous food recalls.

Sharing one of Trump’s midterm campaign videos, Holmes tweeted, “We are winning.”

Holmes is no stranger to aligning with veteran politicians, having convinced late former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger and George Shultz, former Trump administration Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis and ex-Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, among others, to endorse Theranos publicly. (Mattis, 76, and Shultz later repudiated their support for Holmes, while Frist, 74, and Kissinger quietly cut business ties with her.)

Holmes has returned to the spotlight amid the announcement that The Rehearsal’s Nathan Fielder and Some Kind of Heaven’s Lance Oppenheim co-directed a near-3-hour documentary following the former Theranos executive and her partner Evans, 34, in the weeks before she surrendered to federal custody.

You Can See Everything — which opens on October 16 — was screened after much speculation at the 53rd Telluride Film Festival on September 6, where it was met with rapturous early reviews.

“We are winning,” Holmes, 42, wrote via X on Friday, September 25, while quote-tweeting a promotional video made by Donald Trump’s administration, touting the commander-in-chief’s so-called wins amid a historic low approval rating, rising gas and diesel prices, an ongoing war in Iran and numerous food recalls.

Holmes’ cryptic post comes just days after she was reportedly granted an early release from the minimum-security Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas, where she was serving time alongside late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s girlfriend and accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell and The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City’s Jen Shah. (Shah, 52, completed her 6-and-a-half year sentence for wire fraud on August 28.)

According to a Tuesday, September 22, letter sent to victims of Holmes’ crime, viewed by The New York Times, the Theranos founder is scheduled to be transferred from the minimum-security prison to a halfway house next year. According to the letter, also reported on by NBC News, Holmes will be moved to the Austin Transitional Center in Del Valle, Texas, on August 23, 2027. (The Department of Justice is required by law to notify victims of crime of case developments through letters and emails, per NBC News.)

The former founder was found guilty of defrauding millions of investors via her failed blood-testing company. She was sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison in 2022, and ordered to pay 12 victims a total of $452 million in restitution. (Her business partner, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, was sentenced to nearly 13 years in federal prison and ordered to also pay a share of the $452 million in restitution to their victims.)

“Seems like a gift,” Alan Eisenman, one of Holmes’ victims, told NBC News of her scheduled release from prison and transfer to the halfway house, adding that he has yet to receive “a penny” of restitution money from Holmes.

“She was a liar back in 2006, and she’s a liar today,” Eisenman also told the outlet.

Holmes’ initial sentence has already been reduced, after a federal San Jose judge cut her sentence from its original 11 years and 3 months to 123 months, or a little over 10 years. The judge cited a retroactive sentencing guideline change for first-time offenders with clean records as the reason for the sentence reduction. The court also determined that her investors — many extremely wealthy — did not experience any direct financial hardship as a result of her fraud.

She received additional reductions in her sentence for good conduct and behavior under the First Step Act, a bipartisan federal crime justice reform law signed by President Trump in 2018. The law aims to reduce recidivism, reform harsh federal sentencing laws and improve the federal prison conditions nationwide.

Forty-four years after its original release, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Conan the Barbarian has officially landed on Netflix in the United States. John Milius’ (Red Dawn) R-rated sword-and-sorcery epic joined the service on September 1, putting the movie that helped turn Schwarzenegger into a major Hollywood star back in front of streaming audiences.

Things don’t exactly begin well for Conan. His parents are murdered by the forces of Thulsa Doom, and the young survivor is enslaved for years, first enduring the Wheel of Pain before eventually becoming a formidable fighter. Freedom gives him the opportunity he’s been waiting for, and Conan heads out across the Hyborian Age to find Doom, solve the “riddle of steel,” and take revenge on the man responsible for destroying his family.

The cast is led by Schwarzenegger as Conan, alongside James Earl Jones (Star Wars) as Thulsa Doom, Sandahl Bergman (Red Sonja) as Valeria, Gerry Lopez as Subotai, Mako (The Sand Pebbles) as the Wizard, Max von Sydow (The Exorcist) as King Osric, Ben Davidson (Necessary Roughness) as Rexor, and Sven-Ole Thorsen (Predator) as Thorgrim.

How Good Is ‘Conan the Barbarian’?

Conan the Barbarian wasn’t exactly showered with universal acclaim in 1982, but four decades have been rather kind to it. The movie currently holds a 68% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences are slightly more enthusiastic at 74%. The site’s consensus singles out its gritty action and Schwarzenegger’s endlessly quotable performance, even while acknowledging that Milius’ movie occasionally takes all this barbarian business extremely seriously. The movie was a commercial success, too. Produced for around $20 million, Conan the Barbarian ultimately earned roughly $69 million worldwide and helped establish Schwarzenegger as a viable movie star two years before The Terminator changed his career completely.

Spyglass Media Group fired actress Melissa Barrera from the “Scream” franchise in November 2023, accusing her of antisemitism following her pro-Palestinian social media posts amid the war in Gaza. Since then, she’s been open about her ousting, claiming that she’s been blacklisted. Now, the actress has shared the conditions under which she would return to the franchise.

Barrera appeared on the “Just Watch” podcast in September 2026. During the interview, she was asked whether she would ever consider returning to a future “Scream” film. Notably, she most recently appeared in 2023’s “Scream VI” after her role in 2022’s “Scream.”

The 36-year-old stated, “Not with the company that currently holds the rights.” She then expressed her admiration for the beloved horror franchise.

According to her, “I love the franchise. I had an amazing time making those movies.” She then addressed the “hate” she’s received since 2023, saying, “But a lot of the hate and the difficulty that I’ve faced in the last years is because the leadership of that company made it a point to label me something that I’m not, and they never apologized, even when I was proven right.”

The Actress Says An Apology Wouldn’t Be Enough For Her To Return

Barrera added that Spyglass would have to give up ownership of “Scream” for her to return. She said, “Even with an apology, I wouldn’t go back to work with them.”

Still, Barrera knows the chances of her returning to “Scream” are slim to none. According to her, “So, not that I’m holding my breath. I don’t think they have that ability. But if the franchise were ever to leave those hands and go into hands that I think honor Wes Craven’s legacy more, I think yeah.”

Spyglass Previously Released A Statement On Barrera’s Firing

As mentioned, Spyglass Media Group fired Barrera in late November 2023 for a series of social media posts about the war in Gaza. The company then released a statement to Variety calling Barrera’s comments “antisemitic.”

The statement said, “Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion, or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”

This came after Barrera called Israel a “colonized” land and said, “Western media only shows the [Israeli] side. Why do they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself.”

Melissa Called Out The ‘Scream’ Cast In May 2026

Variety interviewed Barrera in May 2026, where she talked about her run in “Titanique” on Broadway and starting a production company, Unsilenced. Regarding “Scream,” she was specifically asked whether or not she thought the cast “were people basically crossing the picket line.”

She responded, “Oh, one hundred percent. I think they all are. And they have to live with that.” After that, she called out the “nostalgia-bait” of the most recent movie, released in February 2026 and setting a franchise record at the box office.

According to Barrera, “The only way they were able to make that movie after what happened was to nostalgia-bait as much as possible.” From there, she implied that someone had made the movie appear more successful than it truly was, saying, “I think they lied about the numbers. I don’t think it made that much money.”

Regarding the “Scream 7” box office, the film opened with $64.1 million in the US in its first weekend, beating the previous franchise record, “Scream VI,” which made $44.4 million in its debut weekend. Including its international ticket sales, “Scream 7” launched with $97.2 million. According to Box Office Mojo, the movie has since grossed $207,999,405.

She Was Recently Cast For A New Movie

According to Variety, Barrera was cast for an upcoming supernatural psychological film, “Inhabit,” in May 2026. Adam Alleca will direct the film. The movie centers on a woman who moves into a rundown apartment in search of a new life. However, she is then plagued by unhinged neighbors.

Most recently, her successful run of Broadway’s “Titanique” ended on September 20.

Sylvester Stallone is opening up about his previous, and private, battle with bulimia.

“I looked at Rocky [like he was a] very smooth, very normal-looking guy. And then I said, ‘I think the character would start to become a bit more vain,’” Stallone, 80, told The New York Times in an interview published Saturday, September 26, referring to his famed role as the fictional boxing legend. “So, I started to think, ‘Design your body like a jaguar, a cat. Not big like Arnold [Schwarzenegger], but more feral and aggressive and very limber and athletic.”

He continued, “Then, it became an obsession. Really bad. It got to the point where I became bulimic. You heard it here first.”

Stallone, who played the titular character in the Rocky franchise, further noted that his body soon became his “armor.”

“I got down to 2.6 percent body fat when I was doing Rocky III, and I couldn’t hold anything down — or I didn’t want to keep it down because I became so obsessed with staying at that point of fitness,” the action star said, stating his actions were an example of his “obsessive body-worship” mindset off-camera. “Nobody does it without additives and drugs, period. I don’t care what they say.”

According to Stallone, he also used steroids to help maintain his physique.

“It isn’t as though you’re a junkie, but if you’re going to work out and try to stay in shape for six months straight, and you’re eating yogurt and pudding, it’s not happening,” he acknowledged. “You [use steroids] in a sensitive way: six weeks on, six weeks off. People go, ‘Oh, you don’t get that way naturally.’ No, you don’t, but that also took a terrible toll.”

Stallone eventually realized the negative effects of his steroid use after starring in 1997’s Cop Land.

“It wasn’t until I did Cop Land, when I had to play the weakest guy in the room — partially deaf, overweight — that I felt somewhat liberated,” he told the outlet. “Yeah, I’ve abused my body. I’ve had nine back operations, two shoulder operations, three neck fusions. Everything is held together with baling wire, but I still want to stay in good shape.”

Before Stallone turned 80 in July, he stopped viewing his body as armor.

“I’m sort of fit, but I take a lot of pills to keep going. It’s come at a terrible price,” he stated. “If I could do it over again, I would say, ‘Let someone else carry the banner and don’t do your own stunts.’ I don’t know what it was about hurting myself all the time.”
