Police Investigating After Dead Body Found In Donation Box

Officers from the Odessa Police Department responded to a report about a deceased person near the corner of East Eighth Street and Coleman Avenue on Friday, July 17, in Odessa, Texas.

According to KOSA, the officers found the dead body of an adult male inside a clothing donation box upon arrival at the location. The authorities do not yet know the cause of death, but the Odessa Police Department shared a post on Facebook noting that an investigation is underway as they await autopsy results.

“Deceased Person. On 7-17-26, the Odessa Police Department responded to a deceased person call at 8th and Coleman,” the statement reads. “Upon arrival, officers located a man deceased inside of a clothes donation box. Investigators are busy trying to identify the deceased and determine a cause of death. There are no outward signs of foul play, and an autopsy has been ordered. We will update as the investigation continues.”

On Wednesday, July 22, the man was identified as Roberto Hernandez.

Resident Nearby Noted A Foul Smell Prior To Discovery

Juan Enriquez lives near the intersection, and he said he noticed a foul smell for weeks before the grisly discovery.

At first, he thought it was a smelly garbage can due to the hot summer. However, he soon learned the source of the odor after the OPD and medical examiner arrived on the scene.

“I never knew where it came from, I just smelled it,” he said to KOSA. “But I thought it was a trash can, you know how it smells during the summertime.”

The clothing donation box was removed from the location on July 19.

“I mean really, I’ve been here for 40 years, and this is the first time we had something this close,” he said.

A Florida Man WAS Arrested After Dead Body Found In Bedroom

As previously reported by The Shade Room, a Florida man was arrested last year after his mother found a dead body in his bedroom. Robert Hendrix was taken into custody after the body of his girlfriend, Kristin Carrier, was found wrapped in a tarp.

His mother was reportedly escaping a rainstorm when she found Carrier. She called the police, and they found “blood patterns on the walls and floor” of Hendrix’s home.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office revealed that Carrier died of “multiple gunshot and stab wounds,” and he was charged with murder.

Florida Mom Carla Nishikura Arrested & Charged After Three Children Reportedly Found Living In Home Covered With Feces

A Florida mom was arrested after deputies conducted a wellness check at her residence in Palm Coast. Law enforcement found Carla Nishikura allegedly living with her three children in a feces-covered home.

Carla Nishikura Arrested After Neighbor Calls Police

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office conducted a welfare check at the home in response to a nude child reportedly wandering outside, according to WFTV. A neighbor called the police after seeing the child and taking her home.

Nishikura allegedly told the deputies that the child is autistic and non-verbal. Additionally, she said the girl wanders and that she forgot to zip-tie the garage door shut.

According to PEOPLE, deputies reported seeing feces on the walls, floors, and ceiling upon entering the home. Furthermore, cracked eggs and urine allegedly covered the floors.

The Department of Children and Families found a cleaning company to help, but it reportedly declined due to “the biohazard conditions.” The Florida mom allegedly admitted to police that she couldn’t “manage her home and children on her own.”

Nishikura Cursed At Police During Her Arrest

A police officer told Gulf Coast News that the entire house was “disgusting.”

“Inside the house, there was feces on the floor, ceiling walls, there were, uh, outlets, um, with electrical wires, uh, showing and, it was, it was pretty disgusting,” he said.

Furthermore, footage of Nishikura being arrested captured her swearing at the deputies and threatening to sue.

“If this sh*t ends up on f*cking news, I swear to God I’m suing you guys,” she said.

Sheriff Credits Neighbor For Reporting Florida Mom

FCSO Sheriff Rick Staly commended the neighbor for reporting what they saw, per PEOPLE.

“Thank God for good neighbors who ‘Saw Something And Said Something.’ When a little girl was found naked in the street, the entire neighborhood dropped everything to help her,” he said. “They went door to door and most importantly, picked up the phone and called us. It’s the only reason why these children are safe today.”

Staly added that the home’s condition was “sickening.”

“What deputies found inside that home was sickening,” he added. “No one, not even a dog, should spend one night living in those conditions.”

Jason Alexander Apologizes to Courtney Stodden For 2012 Skit

Published

Project Angel Food Lead with Love Five Year Anniversary Special

Television personality Courtney Stodden is using her social media platform to promote ending child marriage. In doing so, the 31-year-old has made several social media posts highlighting inappropriate actions she’s faced throughout her life. This includes sharing a screenshot of a previous skit featuring “Seinfeld” alum Jason Alexander in which he acted inappropriately. Now, the actor has responded.

Following Stodden’s post discussing the skit with Alexander, in which he repeatedly rubbed his cell phone against her breasts, the “Seinfeld” alum issued a statement to TMZ. In it, he took accountability for his actions, which occurred when she was 17. Alexander also apologized to the media personality for the indiscretion.

According to him, “Looking back at the comedy sketch in which Ms. Stodden and I participated in 2012, I completely agree that it was inappropriate and I truly regret it.”

The 66-year-old then said, “But more importantly, I am deeply sorry for any harm or distress it has caused Ms. Stodden. I offer her my sincerest apologies.”

Stodden took to her official Instagram account in July 2026 to recall her encounter with Alexander while filming the 2012 “Funny or Die” sketch in question. She began, “I was 17 years old in this photo. The older I get, the more impossible this is to understand.”

After that, she described what happened during the filming, saying, “During this comedy sketch, Jason Alexander repeatedly rubbed his phone across my breasts while saying there was ‘no signal’ in my head but ‘plenty of signal’ in my chest.”

She continued, “Later in the sketch, he joked that when I turned 18 he’d like to take me behind the couch and have his way with me.” Stodden went on to highlight the fact that Alexander has a writer credit for the skit on IMDb.

She continued reflecting, saying, “As an adult, that fact has become harder—not easier—for me to understand. I was a minor. I didn’t have the legal power to decide whether I wanted to participate. The contracts were signed by adults. The paycheck went to Doug. The production moved forward. I was the only child in the room. I felt so alone.”

Courtney Also Discussed How She Sees The Skit Today

Stodden continued, going into detail about her feelings today about the “Funny or Die” skit with Alexander. Specifically, she stated that, as an adult, she doesn’t see the inappropriate skit as being comedy. Stodden also defended herself against those who say she decided to film the video with the actor.

According to her, “Looking back now, I don’t see comedy. I see a 17-year-old girl whose body became part of an adult joke. She continued, “People still say, “You chose to be there.” Legally, I couldn’t make those decisions for myself. That’s the point. I can’t change what happened to me, but I can ask myself: How did so many adults look at a minor and decide this was acceptable?”

After that, at the end of her post, Stodden stated that the reason she’s speaking out is that “children deserve laws that protect them. They shouldn’t have to become adults before realizing the law should have protected them all along.”

As mentioned, Stodden has been using her social media platform to bring awareness to the bill currently proposed in California to make 18 the legal marrying age in the state. According to The Collegian, the California State Senate Judiciary Committee voted to progress the bill in July, with a 12-0 vote.

Gail Pellerin, California State Assembly member, said of the bill, “The human rights commission considers marriage under the age of 18 to be a human rights abuse. It’s long past time that we end that abuse here in California.”

Currently, minors in California can get married with the consent of one parent or guardian and an order from a judge.

When Stodden was 16, she married Doug Hutchinson, who was 51. They were married for nine years before their divorce was finalized in 2020. Stodden spoke out about the availability of underage marriages in the United States in 2025 during a PEOPLE interview.

She began, “I don’t want this to happen to anyone else, and it scares me.” As for why she’s highlighting the issue, Stodden explained, “We’re the hotbed for the dirty little secret, which is pedophiles marrying our children legally in the United States, so that’s why I’m speaking out.”

Stodden also reacted to her Lifetime biopic, “I Was a Child Bride: The Courtney Stodden Story.” According to her, “I’m glad I did it, but boy, it’s been hard to watch it. It’s something I’ve lived through, and it’s the PG version, it’s the TV version. A lot of scenes were cut because it was too much for TV.”

She added, “It’s the craziest story I’ve ever heard, and it’s my own.”

William Shatner’s Family Hid A Double Cancer Heartbreak

Published

on

William Shatner at 52nd Annual Saturn Awards

At 95, William Shatner has survived career highs, personal heartbreak, and decades in Hollywood.

Yet nothing prepared the legendary actor for the moment he and his youngest daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, found themselves battling separate stage 4 cancer diagnoses within months of each other.

Now cancer-free, the father and daughter are using their experience to encourage others to embrace hope, resilience, and early detection.

For years, William Shatner has been known as the fearless Captain James T. Kirk, but his toughest challenge unfolded far from a television set.

The “Star Trek” icon recently revealed that both he and daughter Melanie endured separate stage 4 cancer diagnoses during one of the most difficult chapters their family has experienced.

Melanie’s ordeal began in July 2022 after she discovered a small lump beneath her breast despite receiving a clear mammogram only months earlier. Further testing confirmed HER2-positive breast cancer that had already spread to lymph nodes in her chest.

As she underwent chemotherapy, targeted therapies, a double mastectomy, and radiation, the family faced another devastating blow. In June 2023, Shatner learned he had stage 4 malignant melanoma that had spread to his lungs and brain.

Rather than allowing the diagnoses to define them, both leaned heavily on family support while continuing to look ahead.

“We’re a very together family,” William told PEOPLE. “We’re bonded by all kinds of difficulties that we’ve overcome.”

William Shatner Became His Daughter’s Biggest Source Of Strength

One of the defining moments of Melanie’s treatment came during a frightening late-night phone call.

While undergoing chemotherapy, she reached a point where fear overwhelmed her.

“I was having a moment and was hysterical,” she recalled. “I called you and said, ‘I think I’m dying.’”

Within minutes, William arrived at her home.

Melanie said her father wrapped her in what she has always called a “daddy bear hug” before reassuring her that the crisis would not define her future.

“He said, ‘This is going to be a blip in your life. You’re going to get through this, and it’ll be a memory,’” she remembered.

The encouragement became especially meaningful because William would soon face his own life-threatening diagnosis.

When doctors discovered the melanoma had already spread, the actor approached the news with characteristic optimism.

“They said, ‘You got cancer. If you came in later, you would have been dead.’ See? That’s my life,” he said. “I think the universe is taking care of me.”

Their Recovery Inspired A New Mission Beyond Hollywood

By late 2024, both William Shatner and Melanie Shatner Gretsch had no evidence of active cancer.

The experience changed how they viewed time, family, and purpose.

On July 29, the father-daughter duo will launch the weekly podcast “No Time but Now,” where they’ll speak with physicians, cancer survivors, wellness experts, and advocates about navigating life’s biggest challenges.

Among the scheduled guests are Olympic gold medalist and cancer survivor Scott Hamilton, end-of-life educator Alua Arthur, author Anita Moorjani, nutrition researcher Dr. William Li, and Ian Ward, widely known as “The King of Chemo.”

For William, the project reflects a belief that meaningful conversations can help others facing uncertainty.

“It’s easy for us in this lovely home to say, ‘Make your life meaningful.’ It’s much more difficult to be poverty-stricken and wonder how you’re going to get through it. I’ve been there,” he said. “But it’s also possible to endure that and be aware of the beauty around you.”

Melanie said surviving cancer transformed her outlook completely.

“[Overcoming cancer] changed my life. I’m not so afraid anymore, and there’s so much freedom and joy,” she said.

Modern Treatments Changed Both Of Their Outcomes

The family’s story also reflects how dramatically cancer treatment has evolved over the past two decades.

Melanie’s HER2-positive breast cancer was once associated with significantly poorer outcomes. Today, targeted HER2 therapies have helped improve survival rates for many patients, particularly when combined with surgery and systemic treatment.

Similarly, advances in immunotherapy have reshaped the outlook for advanced melanoma.

According to Dr. Omid Hamid of The Angeles Clinic and Research Institute, Shatner received a combination of immunotherapy drugs designed to activate the body’s own immune system against cancer cells.

“He was treated with a combination of two drugs,” Hamid explained, adding that the therapies “are now standard” and remain well tolerated, even among older patients.

“He’s doing phenomenally well,” the doctor added.

Melanie’s breast surgeon, Dr. Carlie Thompson, also credited newer treatments for making outcomes possible that once seemed unlikely.

She said Melanie “had angels on her side,” while emphasizing that listening to her instincts after discovering the lump ultimately helped save her life.

William Shatner Says Family Matters More Than Legacy

Despite approaching his 96th birthday, William shows little interest in slowing down.

The actor has multiple books and music projects in development while continuing to pursue new creative ventures. Still, he says the greatest reward isn’t another acting credit or industry honor.

Instead, family has become the center of his world. Weekly Sunday dinners that once included only William and his three daughters have expanded to more than 15 relatives, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Melanie affectionately calls her father “the Big Kahuna,” describing him as the family’s patriarch.

For William, that role now means more than any Hollywood accolade.

“Statues are torn down at some point,” he said. “‘Legacy’ is doing good deeds and helping other people. That reverberates for the end of time.”

After surviving parallel battles with stage 4 cancer, both father and daughter appear determined to spend less time looking back and more time helping others move forward one conversation, one family gathering, and one shared story at a time.

Brand New Day’ Director Teases a Darker MCU Story Thanks to The Punisher

Published

on

Peter Parker (Tom Holland) in 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'

Summary

  • Collider’s Steven Weintraub talks with director Destin Daniel Cretton for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
  • Cretton breaks down parkour and wingsuit-inspired Spider-Man shots, working with Jon Watts, and the movie’s deleted scenes.
  • He also discusses balancing Spider-Man’s quippy energy with the movie’s darker storyline, and how Jon Berthal’s Punisher fits into this PG-13 world.

After three superb Spider-Man films, director Jon Watts stepped away from the Marvel machine ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Without a captain to steer this ship, the studio enlisted trusted filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, who cut his superhero teeth on 2021’s action-packed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Now, with less than two weeks until its theatrical release, Cretton talks with Collider’s Steven Weintraub about spinning his own web in the MCU’s ever-expanding lore.

In Brand New Day, we pick up with a Peter Parker (Tom Holland) who’s hit rock bottom since his ultimate sacrifice in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He’s still fighting crime full-time, but he no longer has the support of Stark Industries and his superpowered allies, and no one, including his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) and partner MJ (Zendaya), even remembers who Peter Parker is. This isolation not only leads to a surprising team-up with Frank Castle/Punisher (Jon Bernthal) but also to an uncontrollable mutation in his Spider-Man transformation that may prove useful against an invisible new villain — if he can learn to harness it. Brand New Day also stars Stranger ThingsSadie Sink in her MCU debut and Avengers: Endgame’s Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk.

During his conversation with Collider’s editor-in-chief, Cretton discusses taking on Spider-Man’s fourth feature in the MCU, from editing room hurdles to the surprising lack of deleted scenes, and how they found the balance of Peter Parker’s darkest storyline yet with the fun Spider-Man fans love. The director also breaks down the innovative new Spider-Man shots in the movie, how they put audiences in the suit, and discusses bringing a character as brutal and complex as Berthal’s Frank Castle into Spider-Man’s world.

Destin Daniel Cretton on the Unique Cinematography of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

The Marvel veteran also gives a brief update on ‘Wonder Man’ Season 2.

COLLIDER: I was a huge, huge fan of Wonder Man. What’s the status of Season 2? Do you think you’ll be filming this year?

DESTIN DANIEL CRETTON: I hope so. We’ll leave it at that. [Laughs]

Okay, I’ll leave it there. One of the things I saw in the first 30 minutes of Brand New Day, and one of the things that so impressed me, was that you have shots of Spider-Man swinging through the city that have never been done before in a previous Spider-Man film, and I loved it. Can you talk about coming up with those new types of shots, like him inside the mask?

CRETTON: It was really important for us to try to find ways to remind people that Peter Parker is in that suit. So, finding a way to get the camera in a place that you could believe you are sitting inside that mask with him. We also looked quite a lot at different videos online of parkour videos and wingsuit videos, and where the camera’s placed and what types of lenses they’re using to create the most sense of vertigo, all to try to give the audience a new experience of what it feels like to really be in that suit, being that high and going that fast.

I loved those shots, and fans are going to love them. Did you speak to any of the previous Spider-Man directors before helming this to ask them what not to do?

CRETTON: The only director I spoke with was Jon Watts, who was very gracious in sharing some wise words. But I was mainly very positive about the people I was going to work with and the experience I was going to have.

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Has Very Few Deleted Scenes

“It wasn’t ever a battle of trying to keep things in the movie that I wanted.”

I’m fascinated by the editing process. I think the movie’s around two hours and 24 minutes with credits. Did you ever have a longer cut of it? Did you have those battles in the editing room?

CRETTON: Yeah, that’s always a part of the process. I think the first cut of this movie was a little closer to three hours, maybe two hours and 50 minutes or something, but that’s not the length that I wanted it to be. It wasn’t ever a battle of trying to keep things in the movie that I wanted. I think the movie is the right length that it should be right now.

When you say that length, do you mean that’s an assembly cut or a cut you’re actually happy with?

CRETTON: That’s more of an assembly cut.

Totally. I don’t want people thinking there are all these deleted scenes.

CRETTON: There actually aren’t that many deleted scenes in this movie, surprisingly.

How The Punisher Fits Into ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Darker Tone

“He’s a bit older, he’s in his 20s, and he is dealing with real life.”

Spider-Man-Brand-New-Day-Jon-Bernthal

One of the things that really impressed me about the opening 30 minutes is that it really feels like a completely new Spider-Man movie compared to the last trilogy because of what Spider-Man is dealing with emotionally. Can you talk about balancing the emotions of what he’s going through with the fun Peter Parker Spider-Man that audiences are used to?

CRETTON: That was front of mind. We’re still doing a Spider-Man movie. We’re not doing a depressing drama. It’s a fun, fun movie. It’s exhilarating, the action’s fun, and Spider-Man is still quippy Spider-Man. But he’s a bit older, he’s in his 20s, and he is dealing with real life, and real life is hard. So, I do think the subject matter of his emotional arc does go deeper and does get quite real, but that’s the fun of movies like this, is being able to find that balance between drama and comedy. Nobody does it better than Tom Holland.

I completely agree. I was so surprised when Punisher ended up in this movie, because he’s a famously R-rated character and Spider-Man is a PG-13 universe. Can you talk about figuring out, “Where can I go with Punisher? How hard can I go?” and the philosophical debate between the two characters, because Spider-Man is not about killing, and Punisher is a whole different story.

CRETTON: That, to me, is the point of having Punisher in this movie, is so the two can have that debate. I think this movie is still a Spider-Man movie, and Punisher is in his world. That doesn’t mean that the Punisher is somehow suddenly a different character. He’s the same Punisher, but we’re not showing the things that a PG-13 movie can’t show.

But to me, the point of the Punisher being in this movie is to be a little bit of a warning sign for Spidey, and the journey that he could go down if he’s not careful.

Chadwick Boseman’s Family Locked In Bitter Estate Fight

Published

on

Chadwick Boseman, has died at age 43

Chadwick Boseman’s family has become embroiled in a bitter legal dispute nearly six years after the “Black Panther” star’s death.

The late actor’s brothers, Kevin and Derrick Boseman, are asking a Los Angeles court to remove his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward Boseman, as administrator of his estate. They accuse her of withholding information, delaying court-ordered distributions, and maintaining exclusive control over valuable assets tied to Chadwick’s finances and legacy.

However, the allegations have not yet been proven in court.

Broadimage-Mega/MEGA

Kevin and Derrick filed legal documents on Friday outlining several reasons they believe Taylor should no longer control their brother’s estate, according to TMZ, which obtained the filing. The brothers allege that Taylor has kept their family in the dark about the estate’s status despite a 2022 court order dividing its assets between her and Chadwick’s parents, Leroy and Carolyn Boseman.

Under that agreement, Taylor was entitled to 50% of the estate, while Leroy and Carolyn were to share the remaining half. Previous court filings valued the distributable estate at approximately $2.3 million after expenses, although its total inventoried value had reportedly reached more than $3.8 million.

Nearly four years after that arrangement was approved, Kevin and Derrick claim the administration remains unfinished and that their parents still have not received everything to which they are entitled. They allege the unresolved estate includes more than $3 million held across various bank accounts, along with film residuals, royalties, investments, insurance policies, intellectual property rights, personal property, and income connected to Chadwick’s name and image.

Taylor has not publicly responded to the allegations.

The Brothers Want A Full Accounting Within 30 Days

Chadwick Boseman, has died at age 43

The filing reportedly identifies several tasks the brothers believe remain incomplete. Kevin and Derrick claim Taylor has not transferred a long-term care insurance policy to their mother, properly closed and distributed funds from Chadwick’s bank accounts, or fully accounted for SAG-AFTRA residual payments generated after his death. They also allege that she has failed to collect and distribute unclaimed property belonging to the actor.

Residual payments can continue arriving years after a performer’s death through television broadcasts, streaming, home entertainment, and other uses of past work. In Chadwick’s case, that could involve projects throughout his career, including his appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his acclaimed final performances.

The brothers are asking the court to order Taylor to provide a complete accounting and distribute the remaining estate assets within 30 days. They also want her held in contempt for allegedly failing to comply with the 2022 order.

Under California’s probate process, an estate administrator is responsible for identifying and collecting assets, resolving debts and taxes, maintaining financial records, and distributing the remaining property to the legally recognized beneficiaries. An accounting would document the money received, expenses paid, assets retained, and distributions made during the administration.

Kevin and Derrick are not merely asking the court to impose a deadline. They want Taylor permanently removed from her position and attorney Jason Rubin appointed to oversee the remaining work.

California courts can remove a personal representative when legally recognized grounds exist, including mismanagement, failure to perform required duties, or conduct that places an estate’s property at risk. Filing a removal petition does not automatically establish that any misconduct occurred; the brothers will still need to support their allegations before the court decides whether intervention is warranted.

They are also asking the judge to prevent Taylor from signing major contracts involving Chadwick’s estate without the family’s approval and require her to provide copies of existing estate-related agreements.

According to the filing, the alleged delays have left Chadwick’s parents without money and insurance benefits they were awarded. His brothers further claim the family has been unable to pursue certain business opportunities involving his legacy while Taylor continues to profit from his name and likeness.

Kevin and Derrick say they made numerous attempts to resolve the matter directly before turning to the court. They now want Taylor ordered to cover the family’s attorney’s fees and other legal expenses.

Chadwick Boseman Died Without Leaving A Will

The ongoing conflict is rooted partly in the fact that Chadwick died intestate, meaning he did not leave a legally enforceable will directing how his probate assets should be handled.

Taylor petitioned to become administrator shortly after his death and was appointed as the estate’s personal representative with limited authority in November 2020. At the time, the estate was initially estimated to contain approximately $938,500 in assets. Later filings revealed additional funds, including residual payments, that substantially increased its reported value.

Because Chadwick had no children and left no will, California succession laws determined who could inherit the probate property. However, not everything associated with a deceased celebrity necessarily falls into a single probate estate. Insurance proceeds with named beneficiaries, jointly owned accounts, trusts, corporate assets, and certain contractual rights can be governed separately.

That distinction may become important as the court examines the brothers’ claims regarding insurance, intellectual property, royalties, and contracts connected to Chadwick’s image.

The dispute also highlights why the administration of a celebrity estate can continue long after an initial distribution order. Unlike a single bank balance, residuals and licensing income may keep arriving, while the commercial use of a performer’s name and likeness can create continuing financial and approval questions.

The court fight presents a stark contrast to the united image Chadwick’s loved ones displayed only months ago. In November 2025, Taylor, Kevin, and Derrick attended the actor’s posthumous Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. Taylor accepted the honor on her husband’s behalf, while his brothers joined fellow stars and collaborators in celebrating his legacy.

Chadwick died on August 28, 2020, at age 43 after privately battling colon cancer for four years. He continued filming projects such as “Black Panther,” “Da 5 Bloods,” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” while undergoing surgeries and chemotherapy.

“A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much,” his family said while announcing his death, per BBC. “It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in ‘Black Panther.’”

Now, the court must determine whether Taylor has failed to complete her legal responsibilities or whether she can adequately account for the estate’s remaining assets. Until the judge rules, Kevin and Derrick’s claims remain allegations, and Taylor continues to serve as administrator.

I’d Stream That For A Dollar: New RoboCop Show Headed To Prime Video

In some ways, it’s fair to call RoboCop the most universally appealing hero of the ‘80s. Despite the movie’s R-rated and obscene amounts of violence, the film was a hit with children who enjoyed how the main character merged two of their favorite heroes: cop and robot. Meanwhile, adults appreciated the film for being an absolutely brutal satire of capitalism. Of course, children and adults alike enjoyed how the heavy messages of the movie are wrapped in unforgettable fight scenes and ridiculously quotable dialogue. As films go, RoboCop is truly one of a kind. Unfortunately, that proved to be a problem when it came to growing the franchise.

You see, RoboCop is a bit like Highlander: each franchise has one good movie followed by worsening films and mediocre TV shows. After RoboCop 2 and 3, we got two crappy television series (RoboCop and RoboCop: Prime Directives) followed by the abysmal 2014 reboot. Those failed projects frustrated fans and creators alike because RoboCop is one of the coolest characters ever created; how hard can it be to give him a good story? We’re about to find out. After announcing development of the series three years ago, Amazon has officially given the green light to a new Robocop TV show.

Somehow, Robert Cop Returned

The premise of the first RoboCop movie is that after one of Detroit’s top cops is killed, he is brought back to life with the help of a cyborg body. This proves to be both a blessing and a curse: while his transformation has made him the most dangerous creature to ever walk the streets, RoboCop struggles with the humanity he has lost. Fortunately, he is kept emotionally grounded by his old partner. Together, they fight crime ranging from petty criminals to the corrupt corporate stooges who are busy running the city into the ground.

Now, RoboCop is getting a new show on Prime Video. The first season will have eight episodes, and the series is being produced by Blumhouse Atomic Monster. The showrunner for Robocop is Peter Ocko (best known for Lodge 49). Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner will serve as executive producers, which is notable because they are the co-creators and co-writers of the original RoboCop movie. Other executive producers include Rob Hackett, Michael Clear, and genre legend James Wan, who described this project “a dream” in a written statement. He called the original movie “decades ahead of its time” and said “its questions about technology, identity, and who corporations really serve have only grown more urgent. “

All Cops Are Bots

Wan is confident that the new Robocop show will be able “to honor what made the original iconic and highlight its relevancy in this modern, tech-driven world, while building something unmistakably new for a global audience.” Amazon’s Head of Global Television, Peter Friedlander, is similarly optimistic, saying, “Peter Ocko has crafted a vision that honors the soul of what made the original so enduring while building something entirely fresh and urgent for today.“ According to the official description, the show will explore topics such as “humanity versus technology and the consequences of unchecked corporate power feel more relevant today than ever, making it the ideal property to reimagine for a new era of television.”

Much like Wan, I’ve been a huge nerd for RoboCop for most of my life. But if I’m being honest, the franchise has felt like Alex Murphy’s final moments. It’s wounded, bleeding out, and teetering right on the edge of death. However, Prime Video is about to do for this franchise what OCP did for RoboCop, taking the spark of what’s left and putting it in a newer, stronger body. If the new show is great, fans can joyously shout “I’d buy that for a dollar!” If the new season sucks, though, we can tell all the episodes what Boddicker told all those ladies: “bitches leave!”
