‘NCIS’ Stars Reveal the Real Reason the Series Still Works After 500 Episodes
For Wilmer Valderrama and Emily Wickersham, hitting 500 episodes of NCIS isn’t just about breaking network television records — it’s about the people who’ve grown up with the show. Speaking with Collider for our expansive Collider Rewind look back at the legacy of the franchise, the actors reflected on what’s kept the long-running series going for more than two decades, pointing to its focus on deeply human, relatable characters and the way it’s become part of viewers’ everyday lives.
Wickersham first joined NCIS in Season 11 in a recurring role before being promoted to series regular later that same season. She went on to play Ellie Bishop for seven seasons before exiting the show, only to return in the current Season 23. Valderrama, meanwhile, joined as a series regular in Season 14 and has portrayed Nick Torres ever since. Over the years, Bishop and Torres developed a classic will-they-won’t-they dynamic — one that quickly became a fan-favorite and drew comparisons to some of the franchise’s most iconic relationships. That storyline was ultimately cut short by Wickersham’s departure, but now, with her return (albeit for just one episode), fans are once again tuning in and hoping Season 23 might finally deliver the payoff they’ve been waiting for.
During our conversation, Valderrama described NCIS as something that evolves alongside its audience, while Wickersham highlighted how it’s created a shared experience across generations—parents, grandparents, and kids all watching together. Together, their perspective frames the franchise not just as a global hit, but as a lasting source of comfort and connection for millions of fans. You can read the full interview below, and stay tuned for more epic NCIS conversations this week.
COLLIDER: Talking about the 500th episode, when it airs, NCIS will have now surpassed Grey’s Anatomy, Family Guy, and classics like Bonanza. What do you think it is about NCIS that has made it such a mainstay on television?
WILMER VALDERRAMA: It’s a beautiful question. Every year, the show defies the odds of gravity by continuing and having this many people watch. I mean, last year, over 300 million people watched around the world. You think about those numbers, and you think about what this show might have actually meant to people at different times of their personal journeys and their lifespans, or the families that have seen children be born and gone off to college throughout the run of the show. It’s something incredibly special.
When you ask, what’s the secret sauce? We’ve understood what the show really is about, and it’s about the people solving the cases. It’s about creating these characters that you can see yourself in, and then also go through some kind of subliminal journey, spiritual journey, physical journey, where it goes like, “Okay, I know what they’re going through.” And you get answers, and you get to places. So, I think in many ways, NCIS has had a soulful journey, as any individual has. The show performs as a living organism, so everything you see on that screen is alive. It’s not a character that you’re just watching solve a crime of the week, and to me, that’s the gift, right?
I knew the show was incredibly special before I joined it. I joined in Season 14, I’m going into Season 24 next year, and I’ll tell you, the thing that really sticks out to me is that the people behind the characters are just as special as the people who are on-screen, and that’s something that is also part of the secret sauce.
Reunions Not a Moment Too Soonions — The Collider TV Quiz!
It’s always fun when actors from one show find their way back to one another in a new show. Were these television reunions memorable to you?
‘NCIS’ Has Cracked the Code for Continuing to be a “Good Show”
“It’s been so cool to have that experience from fans over the years.”
That’s such a beautiful answer. Emily, do you have anything to add to that, or did he hit the nail on the head?
EMILY WICKERSHAM: He always hits the nail on the head. He’s so good at this. But I think that, I’m sure, Wilmer, you’ve experienced this also, that different generations of people will come up to you and be like, “I watched the show with my grandma. I was a little kid, and I watched with my grandma, or my mom, or my dad.” It’s built this connection between generations, which I’ve always thought was so cool, that a grandparent watched it with their grandson or granddaughter, because it’s been on for so long that it does have this special quality about it. It’s been in people’s living rooms for so long, of different ages, and I always have found that so special that everyone has been able to have this shared experience with these characters over the years.
There are so many episodes to watch. People who are in hospital beds or whatever have so many wonderful episodes they can just throw on the TV, and it’s become this comfort. It’s been so cool to have that experience from fans over the years.
VALDERRAMA: You nailed it there. That’s one of the most special things is when you either are walking through an airport or you’re walking through a mall, and you’re walking down the street and somebody comes up and is like, “Hey, I just want you to know, I lost my grandfather or my father two years ago, and I keep watching NCIS because it’s the one thing that connects me to them.” What a gift, and what a beautiful responsibility to continue to be a good show.
I think that’s part of the beauty of the show. It’s one of those very few shows still in our lifetime that can bring families together in the living room. I think we’ve lost a lot of that viewership in television. There are so many options, there are so many genres, there are so many age groups that have specialty shows dedicated to them. Shows that bring us all together in one cohesive, extraordinary experience are very few. So, I think for CBS to continue to cultivate that NCIS night and to continue to give families a place where they can watch together, it’s cool enough, it’s seasoned enough, and it’s mature enough that that gets people talking together. I feel like it’s been the greatest gift in my life, in my career, to be able to see that through this show.
It’s really been such a gift for fans. I’ve actually been watching NCIS since it first started as a backdoor pilot on JAG, so it’s been part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I have a lot of fond memories tied to it. I was also thinking about how you both came into the show in Season 10 and Season 14, and I’m curious what that experience was like — especially the audition process. Did you go back and watch specific episodes to get a feel for where the show was at, its tone, or how your characters might fit into that world at the time?
WICKERSHAM: I went in pretty blind, if I’m being completely honest. I actually hadn’t watched much of NCIS before my audition. There were several episodes to watch, and I watched a few. The audition process was really cool, and I think very different from Wilmer’s, where I auditioned with a few girls, and we did scenes on the actual set for the tests with the actual actors at the stages, and it was so cool, I felt, the way they went about it. In a way, it took the pressure off because it was like it doesn’t matter if you get the job, you just kind of have the job for the day, and that went for all the actors auditioning.
I just had the best time. It was Sean Murray, Michael Weatherly and Mark Harmon for those tests, and everyone was wonderful. I had such a great experience. I didn’t know if I was going to get it or not, and I did, and it changed my life.
And the rest is history, right?
WICKERSHAM: Yeah!
“I feel like going to a show that needs you is so much more rewarding because you get to contribute on a greater level.”
Wilmer Valderrama Resisted the Call for ‘NCIS’ Until it Was the Right Moment
“You guys don’t need anything. Your cast is stacked.”
VALDERRAMA: I would say for me, yeah, we had a little bit of a different experience. Years before I actually joined NCIS, there was this opportunity to join NCIS: Los Angeles, and I wasn’t ready at that moment. I was doing some other stuff. There were a couple of things that I had on the horizon that I really wanted to see through, and the timing wasn’t right for NCIS: Los Angeles, for me, so it didn’t happen.
But then, years later, I was shooting Minority Report, which lasted one season, and then I was shooting From Dusk Till Dawn with Robert Rodriguez. I was covered in gunpowder and fake blood and vampire fangs, and Robert Rodriguez directed, and I’m in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and I get this phone call from my team, and they’re like, “Hey, an offer came in for you to join NCIS.” And I was like, “I don’t know, man. That show is like the number one show on television. I feel like they won’t need me.” I feel like going to a show that needs you is so much more rewarding because you get to contribute on a greater level. They’re like, “But just take the meeting!” And I was like, “I don’t know. I don’t know. I think I’m okay.” Then I got back in town from shooting the show and they’re like, “Just take the meeting with the showrunner.” And I was like, “Alright.”
I’d just done this pilot for CBS Studios, where I played a young colonel in a show called Four Stars. It was a beautiful show. Unfortunately, at that time, there was no slots because nothing got canceled on CBS, so the show didn’t go, even though the show was really, really good. I think the network and Amy Rosenberg, who was our current executive on NCIS at the time, now the president of the network. She had seen that pilot and she had said, “What about Wilmer Valderrama for this part?” And I was like, “What?” Then she talked to the team, Mark Harmon, talked to everyone, and they’re like, “Yeah, that sounds like an interesting idea.” So I met with the showrunner, Gary Glasberg, rest in peace, and I was like, “Hey, man, look, I’m taking the meeting. I really appreciate it. I’m very flattered, but you guys are number one. You guys don’t need anything. Your cast is stacked.”
Then that’s when he told me that Michael Weatherly was leaving, and they wanted to shake things up in the squad room. They wanted to do something different. I was like, “Well, I don’t know how different, because I don’t know that I’m going to be playing what he was to the show.” And he said, “Well, what do you want to create?” And that’s when my ears went like, “Create? I can create my own character from scratch?” And then we’re having this conversation, and he’s like, “Look, man, the next two years are picked up. You get to have a journey to build a character you would like to play.” He said, “Not a lot of people are running up to the bad guy anymore, so we need to actually go chase the bad guys.” So, long story short, I was like, “Well, this is an interesting opportunity.”
By the way, in referencing Cote de Pablo and giving her her flowers, a Latina who played a really beautiful, strong character on that show, yet she was never allowed to play a Latina; she played an Israeli character, you know? I just felt like, “Wow, this will be the first Latino on the cast. Could be interesting. It could be fun. I could really spice it up. I could really be myself, unapologetically.” And the promises were right. They were just like, “Go. Fly.” So, we created a character that I felt was so different than NCIS had seen that I felt like, “At least I’m contributing something that dynamically feels different.” And I really loved it.
My first two days there were amazing. Emily and Sean Murray and Pauley Perrette, at the time, and that same year, Jennifer Esposito joined. Man, I was like, “This team is awesome!” The nicest crew in Hollywood. The writers just like to keep writing out amazing episodes, and they knew how to make my character sing. So, I had a lot of fun the first couple of years, and I realized, “Man, this really could be a home.” And I really worked very hard to make sure the fans knew that I was here with all respect, that I was here to build on what they had already seen, and that hopefully they would have me in their living rooms. And so far, I still got a job, so that’s pretty good.
Two things off of that. One, From Dusk Till Dawn, is one of the best shows ever. I loved it so much.
VALDERRAMA: Thank you!
Two, you mentioned here that this is 10 years going into your 10th season. What has being part of NCIS taught you as a member of a cast, especially when you have a show like this where there are so many guest stars, so many day players, so many supporting roles? How have you grown as an actor?
VALDERRAMA: Thank you for that. It’s a great question. The first thing that comes to mind is collaboration, to be at a place where nobody’s afraid to try things. When you have a show that gets 20-episode pickups, you’re like, “Alright, let’s try this this episode. Let’s make him a little moody on this episode. Let’s make him a little bit more of a ball-buster on this one.” You get to really try things. That’s one of the things I feel, that they have created such an environment for all of us to play and have fun, and the writers really are not very picky about how it’s interpreted. There’s a science for solving cases, but when it comes to letting our characters sing, they really let us cook, and so that makes it very fun. I think when you have that environment, you start swinging for the fences. You have a lot of fun. You come to work excited to do something different, and I think that that definitely was one of those elements.
The other environment is that everyone’s very grateful to have a job, and everyone’s very grateful to be there, and that feels refreshing. There’s no bitterness on set, and so that’s also really exciting.
But I don’t know, it’s a really loaded question because there’s like a million reasons and a million ways that I could answer that. I would say that what this show has really taught me is to lead with opinion and lead with solutions. I’m not going to complain about the script if I didn’t read it three days before. I’m not going to have an opinion on the scene unless I talked about days before, where the writers can actually have an opportunity to help you mold it into what you expect it to be. That level of respect for each other’s artistry, I think, is also kind of a great runway. But I think that’s the thing: lead with ideas and solutions, and help move the ball a little closer to the touchdown.
I love that answer. It was really astute.
WICKERSHAM: No, he’s so articulate. So good!
Bishop’s Return to ‘NCIS’ Was “So Serendipitous”
“It was like stepping back in time into this family that I really love.”
Don’t worry, Emily, I have one for you now.
VALDERRAMA: [Laughs] Oh, here we go!
Coming back as Bishop, I remember being so gutted when your character left, and I was so excited when the news came out that you were coming back. What was it like coming back? Because there have been so many cast changes, so many differences between now and then. How has it shaped your return for Bishop as well?
WICKERSHAM: It was so serendipitous and perfect the way it unfolded. Bishop went off and had to really shift her life. There was this fire that she didn’t want to put out, and I think that was happening for me in different ways as Emily. So, coming back to the show, the show really did change my life in so many ways. I feel like I really had the opportunity to work every day as an actor, and I got to learn how to act in a lot of ways. Because before you’re doing it every day, I found it very difficult to get into the rhythm, but you get into such a wonderful rhythm on this show. For 10 months out of the year, you’re sharing this experience with these people. You become so close. I don’t think I’ll actually ever have this experience again in my life, where I get the opportunity to go back.
I knew everybody. There were a few characters and a few new cast members that I didn’t know, and I got to know, and they’re wonderful. But a lot of the crew has stayed the same, and it was like stepping back in time into this family that I really love. It was such a special, wonderful experience for me, and I think for Bishop, as well. Coming back, Bishop had such a great period of her life, had so many incredible experiences at NCIS solving cases, and all this stuff, and just the day-to-day rapport with everyone there that there’s this familiar thing about NCIS where it was just cool. I knew I wouldn’t be as articulate as Wilmer.
VALDERRAMA: Oh my god!
WICKERSHAM: [Laughs] But it really was! It was cool. And I really don’t think I’ll ever experience anything like it again, both for myself and Bishop.
Tune into the 500th episode of NCIS tonight, and stay tuned for more Collider Rewind drops as we look back at the series’ legacy.

Summer House’s Lindsay Smiles With Baby Gemma, Carl and Kyle
Lindsay Hubbard shared a sweet moment with daughter Gemma and her Summer House costars Kyle Cooke and ex-fiancé Carl Radke.
Taking to Instagram on Saturday, May 9, Lindsay, 39, posted two photos that captured her beaming while holding Gemma, 16 months, between Kyle, 43, and Carl, 41. (Lindsay and ex Turner Kufe welcomed the child in December 2024.)
“Modern family ❤️Summer House OGs 4 life,” Lindsay captioned the carousel, which drew messages of praise from fans. “Lindsay looking at Carl! We are healed,” commented one follower, while another wrote, “I feel like mom and dad need to get back together,”
The show of unity between Lindsay and Carl, who got engaged in August 2022 but ended their engagement one year later when Carl called time on their romance, comes after the former couple appeared to reconnect during season 10 of the Bravo reality TV series.
Cementing their efforts to mend their relationship, Lindsay even unblocked Carl via social media in April.
Less than six months ago, Carl released his memoir, Cake Eater: Getting High, Hitting Low: And Trying to Stay in the Middle, which discussed his experience with addiction and how Summer House helped him reflect on deep-seated issues. The book also touched on his breakup with Lindsay.
“Would I tell someone else to fall in love before hitting their one-year mark? Probably not,” Radke wrote in the book, referring to his friendship with Lindsay turning romantic within the first 12 months of him getting sober. “There’s a reason everyone says to wait a year, and I’ve seen firsthand how messy it can get. But I don’t regret it. That relationship was part of my recovery, and it taught me a lot about myself, about being intimate with someone and about what I actually need and want in a partner.”
The book also discussed Carl’s decision to call off his engagement to Lindsay and the impact the split had on his mental health. “When you wake up day after day to see your name in the news next to words like lies and manipulation, when something as sacred as your sobriety is being questioned, when you feel like you can’t escape the noise and find a moment of peace, it takes a toll,” he wrote in the memoir, which was released on December 30, 2025.
His words continued, “Our dynamic wasn’t healthy, and walking away, as hard as it was, felt like the most compassionate choice for both of us. The pattern of conflict, the lack of trust, the communication breakdowns: they weren’t getting better, despite our efforts in couples therapy. I had to be honest with myself: if we went forward, the conflicts we couldn’t resolve now would likely follow us into marriage. I wanted a future built on stability and trust, and despite the love we had, I couldn’t see us creating that together. I couldn’t go through with the wedding knowing what I knew.”
As for Lindsay’s subsequent relationship with Turner, the reality star confirmed at the Summer House season 9 reunion in June 2025 that she and Gemma’s father were putting “our romantic relationship on pause” for the moment. “We are just focused on being the best parents we can be to Gemma. We are coparents,” she explained at the time.

Matt Damon And Ben Affleck Sued Over ‘The Rip’
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are being sued by Florida police officers for defamation over their film, “The Rip,” which was inspired by a real case. The Plaintiffs are claiming their reputations as officers of the law have been tarnished due to how they were depicted in the action/thriller movie, which was released on Netflix in January 2026. “The Rip” stars Damon and Affleck in the lead roles, and it was produced by Artists Equity, the production company founded by the two actors.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office officers, Jonathan Santana and Jason Smith, filed a lawsuit against Matt Damon and Ben Affleck through their production company, Artists Equity, citing defamation per se and defamation by implication over “The Rip,” as stated in a complaint obtained by Entertainment Weekly.
Per the filing, “The Rip” was inspired by the 2016 case known as the Miami Lakes drug case, in which officers, including Santana and Smith, seized more than $21 million (as much as $24 million in some reports) in cash during a drug bust, the largest sum of money retrieved in Miami-Dade history.
Santana and Smith were not named in the movie, but they claim that Damon and Affleck’s characters are closely linked to them, and viewers could infer the roles were based on their lives. In the movie, however, they say the majority of the events did not happen in real life.
‘The Rip’ Took Creative Liberties
“The Rip” stars Damon and Affleck as Lt. Dane Dumars and Det. Sgt. J.D. Byrne. It follows a group of officers who uncover a massive stash of cash, testing their loyalty and trust, and unraveling corruption within the Miami-Dade Police Department. The film also features Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, and Catalina Sandino Moreno.
The movie states it was inspired by real events, but the Plaintiffs say in their complaint that the only fact in the movie was “a large seizure occurred.” Apart from that, “the events portrayed in the film did not happen.”
Santana and Smith claim that because of “The Rip,” their integrity has been questioned by friends and colleagues. “Viewers are associating the Miami-Dade Police Department and Plaintiffs with the corrupt portrayals in ‘The Rip,’” the filing noted.
The Real Case Behind Matt Damon And Ben Affleck’s Movie
In June 2016, a group of police officers conducted a raid in a Miami Lakes home, in which they discovered more than $21 million in cash concealed in five-gallon buckets. The buckets were discovered hidden in the home’s attic. Two siblings and suspected marijuana traffickers, Luis Hernandez-Gonzalez and Salma Hernandez, were arrested in connection with the raid.
In an interview with 7 News Miami, Santana said, “When you rip something, you’re stealing something. We never stole a dollar.” The deputy said that he was praised for his work 10 years ago, but has been the subject of jokes since “The Rip” came out. “Pretty much saying, you know, how many buckets of money did I steal?”
The complaint also enumerated several scenes in the film in which the characters blurred moral and professional boundaries, including one in which Affleck’s character kills a DEA agent.
The Plaintiffs Sent A Cease-And-Desist Letter
The filing also claims that Santana and Smith’s attorneys sent the production company a cease-and-desist letter in December, asking that it not release “The Rip.” They alleged that they received a response after the film was already released on Netflix on January 16, stating their claims are “unfounded.”
The response further noted, “The film did not expressly name Sergeant Smith and there was no implication that the Plaintiffs engaged in any misconduct in the film.” The Plaintiffs’ attorney, Ignacio Alvarez, said, “They portrayed police officers as dirty, they portrayed my clients as dirty. Now their reputations are hurt.”
Matt Damon And Ben Affleck Did Their Research

In a January interview with TODAY, Damon and Affleck shared how they spent time in Miami with real officers to prepare for the film and conduct research. They also revealed that some of the officers appeared in the movie in supporting roles.
“The Rip” writer and director Joe Carnahan said the movie was inspired by his friend, Chris Casiano, who showed him photos of a raid he and his team conducted. “When he showed me the photographs of containers in the wall that they sledgehammered out, I went, ‘Wow,’” Carnahan told Gold Derby, adding that he thought that officers counting millions of dollars in cash would be cinematic.
Damon and Affleck’s attorneys have yet to respond to the lawsuit.

Euphoria Shows Sydney Sweeney Masturbating, Topless on OnlyFans
After receiving backlash for Cassie’s OnlyFans story line, Euphoria pushed it further with more scenes where Sydney Sweeney is topless — and others where she is masturbating on camera.
During the Sunday, May 10, episode of the hit HBO series, Cassie grew her subscribers on OnlyFans with Maddie’s (Alexa Demie) help by filming graphic content. Some of it was more tame, with Cassie recording sexy audio messages and going on podcasts to show support for men’s rights.
Others were more sexual in nature with Cassie filming herself having sex, sending her used underwear to her fans and going topless again. While Cassie worked hard to bring in the money, her husband, Nate (Jacob Elordi), encouraged her to push herself even further to provide for him so he could pay off his debt.
Cassie’s arc in season 3 has received criticism after some OnlyFans creators weren’t thrilled with how their line of work was portrayed on screen. Creator Sam Levinson, however, defended the decision to push boundaries.
“[Cassie] has got her dog house and her little dog ears and the nose, and that has its own humor,” Levinson explained to The Hollywood Reporter in April. “But what makes the scene is the fact that her housekeeper is the one filming it.”
He continued: “What we wanted to always find is the other layer of absurdity that we’re able to tie into it so that we’re not too inside of her fantasy or illusion,” the 41-year-old added. “The gag is to jump out, to break the wall.”

Levinson broke down how he and director of photography Marcell Rév brought the scenes to life.
“An obvious choice would’ve been something modern and very plain and fancy, but we ended up choosing this mid-century home, which is a little tacky, but also stuck in the ‘70s,” Rév explained. “It’s probably a strange choice, but also it gives us possibilities. OnlyFans has its own aesthetic and how you elevate that aesthetic to the show’s aesthetic is a challenge. I’m not going to lie.”
Despite the backlash, Levinson stood by his vision.
“Some of these scenes we only lit with these ring lights that she would use. When you’re inside, it’s a beautiful, glowing front light, but then you jump out of it and it’s just a pool of light and everything surrounding it is dark. It’s just gnarly and jarring,” he added. “We wanted to capture what she’s trying to show the audience and be inside of it. But then also pull back wider and see how depressing it is.”
Euphoria airs on HBO Sundays at 9 p.m. ET.

Martin Short Speaks About About Daughter’s Death
Martin Short is breaking his silence after the devastating loss of his daughter, Katherine, in February. In a heartfelt reflection, the comedian talked about grief, heartbreak, and how his experiences affected his perspective in life. Despite enduring painful moments, the actor continues to find strength through family, memories, and the support of those closest to him as he moves forward.

Martin Short is publicly talking about his daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Short, for the first time since she took her own life in February. In a conversation with CBS News‘ Tracy Smith, the 76-year-old comedian said the loss “has been a nightmare for the family.”
“But the understanding [is] that mental health and cancer, like my wife’s, are both diseases, and sometimes with diseases they are terminal,” Short said, adding that Katherine, who was struggling with her mental health and was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, “fought for a long time.” The actor explained that Katherine “did the best she could until she couldn’t.”
Short and his late wife, Nancy Dolman, adopted three children, Katherine being the eldest and the only girl.
Katherine Elizabeth Short’s Tragic Death
On February 23, 2026, Katherine died by suicide at 42 years old. Her family issued a statement a couple of days later confirming her passing. “The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world,” it read.
Following her death, some of her friends shared the struggles she faced privately, as previously reported by The Blast. One of her friends, Rande Levine, explained how Katherine sought treatment for her mental struggles and openly talked about it with her closest friends. However, she kept up an appearance in front of others. “You would never know based on how she presented herself, and how funny she was,” Levine shared.
Martin Short On Losing His Wife To Cancer

Short also talked about the loss of his wife, Nancy, who died from ovarian cancer in 2010 at 58 years old. The actor described his late wife as edgy and funny, saying that their relationship was “an equal ping pong match.” The couple married in 1980, and in his 2014 autobiography, he wrote that he felt “love at first sight” upon meeting Nancy.
At the time of her death, Nancy had been battling cancer for about three years, and Short recalled her final moments. “So, Nan’s last words to me were, ‘Martin, let me go,’” the actor shared.
Short said he didn’t work as much when they learned of Nancy’s diagnosis, but he was in the series “Damages” months before her death. No one knew that he was struggling, and he would go into his dressing room to compose himself before facing other people. “You know, that’s what you have to do,” he said.
The Actor Has Experienced Multiple Losses

At a panel for “Netflix is a Joke Presents: This Better Be Funny with David Letterman,” Letterman asked him about the earlier tragedies in his life, pointing out how Short lost his brother, mother, and father before the age of 21.
Short’s older brother, David, died in a car accident in 1962. “Then my mother was diagnosed with cancer at his funeral and died three years later,” Short said, adding that his father died a year later from a stroke. “There was definitely a period where life changed completely,” he said.
The comedian told CBS News that dealing with loss changed the way he looked at life. “What it developed in me was this muscle of survival and handling grief and a perspective on it,” adding that it helped him develop a thicker skin on stage. “I think if you’ve gone through that, an audience not liking you is really not that important anymore,” he explained.
Martin Short Moves Forward Amid Tragedy

Short shared a realization he had while driving to visit his son, Oliver, who has been temporarily living in Newport Beach after his home was lost in the Los Angeles fires. The actor questioned why he’s still doing the things he does at 75 years old. As he arrived at his son’s home, his grandchildren enthusiastically greeted him, urging him to play with them. “And suddenly you go, ‘Oh, that’s why. That’s why. Okay,’” he said
Elsewhere in the interview, Short said that many people have to do things and move on despite difficult times, just as he does. “I’ve just been in that situation many times. You head for the light,” he shared.

Paltrow recently took to Instagram to pay tribute to her other child, son Moses Martin, after he turned 20 years old. Her April 8 carousel showed Moses, whom Paltrow also shares with Chris, 49, as a young child, posing with his mom for a selfie and standing on a red carpet with friends. “Happy 20th (!!) birthday to you @mosesmartin you are the definition of a gentleman- kind, intelligent, thoughtful and soulful. It’s beyond words how incredible you are. I’m sending you a big birthday hug from the west coast. Don’t forget to check the mailbox today. I love you to bits, mama,” Paltrow captioned her carousel at the time.
Just days ago, Paltrow, Moses and Chris were all photographed attending Apple’s graduation from Vanderbilt University in Nashville. In photos published by Vogue on Saturday, May 9, Paltrow was seen beaming alongside husband Brad Falchuk as the pair walked beside Apple holding a bouquet of white roses. (Paltrow and Faulchuk, 55, married in September 2018.)
The outlet also published her Coldplay frontman father rocking a sleek suit while walking beside Moses.
In 2020, Paltrow opened up about coparenting with her ex, whom she separated from in March 2014 after 11 years of marriage. During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Paltrow explained that a united front takes hard work. “Chris and I committed to putting them [the children] first and that’s harder than it looks because some days you really don’t want to be with the person that you are getting divorced from,” Paltrow said at the time. “But if you’re committed to having family dinner then you do it. You take a deep breath, and you look the person in the eye, and you remember your pact, and you smile, and you hug and you recommit to this new relationship that you are trying to foster.”

Diane Keaton’s Daughter Shares Mother’s Day Tribute Post
Diane Keaton’s daughter, Dexter, paid tribute to her late mom on Mother’s Day.
Sharing an Instagram post on Sunday, May 10, Dexter, 30, posted a carousel of three beautiful mother-daughter images alongside a caption. “First Mother’s Day without you. I miss you more than words can say. Missing her voice, her hugs, her presence, and everything that made her home,” she wrote. “I love you, Mom 🤍.”
The photos showed Dexter as a child at the beach with a smiling Keaton, as well as the pair celebrating Dexter’s wedding day in 2021 and Keaton giving her daughter a kiss on the cheek in a garden. The post comes seven months after Keaton died of pneumonia on October 11, 2025. She was 79 years old.
Dexter’s followers shared comforting words in her carousel’s comments section, reiterating how widely adored the late actress was. “The entire world misses your beautiful, special Mom,” wrote one fan, while another wrote, “Happy Mother’s Day, Dexter. I’m sure your mom is sitting in your heart and watching from above. Sending love.”
A spokesperson for Keaton confirmed to Us Weekly last year that the Oscar-winner had died and that Dexter and her brother, Duke, “asked for privacy” as they grieved. Four days later, People confirmed the actress’ cause of death via a statement shared by Keaton’s family. “The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” the statement read.
In January, Dexter took to Instagram to mark what would have been her mom’s 80th birthday. Sharing an image of a tattoo that celebrated Keaton’s legacy, Dexter wrote at the time, “I miss you, mom 💔🕊️Thank you @winterstone for my forever reminder of my wonderful mom.”

Dexter’s photo showed her tattoo up close, capturing the script, “La Di Da” with a small heart — a reference to the actress’ famous line in 1977’s Annie Hall.
Duke, 26, was also tagged in the photo, with his own fresh commemorative tattoo that said, “Weird Old World.” Dexter’s post also included a photo of Keaton and Dexter from behind as the pair wrapped their arms around each other while taking in a view of the water.
Keaton’s close friend Sarah Paulson also got a tattoo to mark Keaton’s 80th birthday. Sharing an Instagram image of Keaton’s initials etched into her arm, Paulson, 51, wrote, “You would have been 80 today. Too many deep feelings to put here … I was the luckiest person in the world to have traveled, laughed so hard we cried, watched a million and one movies, really cried, and eaten French fries with you. You. You. Wondrous, singular, YOU. I will miss you till the end of time.”

Yellowstone’s Marshals Kills Riley Green in Surprise Twist
Yellowstone‘s Marshals spinoff kept the deaths coming with another crucial character getting killed off in a shocking twist.
During the Sunday, May 10, episode of the hit CBS series, Kayce (Luke Grimes) was still dealing with the aftermath of the attack on his ranch while navigating a new threat from his past. The episode picked up from the fallout of the prison bus crash as Kayce and Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) tracked down the last remaining inmate still on the loose.
Kayce and Cal’s journey led to them reliving their time as US Navy SEALs, which included Garrett (Riley Green) as part of their group. It was through those flashbacks that viewers — and Kayce — learned that Cal wasn’t the one who declared another member of their group dead during a mission, which prevented him from getting lifesaving help. Instead, it was Garrett who made the call that ultimately resulted in their friend dying anyway.
Garrett, for his part, was recovering in the hospital after the fire at Kayce’s ranch. He seemed to be on the mend despite sustaining second-degree burns and inhaling a lot of smoke. But when Kayce, Cal and Andrea (Ash Santos) returned to the hospital at the end of their shift to check on Garrett, they were informed he had died.
Marshals marked Green’s acting debut — with him appearing in multiple episodes earlier this season.
“I’m so excited to be joining the cast of Marshals. Being on set with my buddy Luke Grimes made the experience even more memorable,” Green said in a statement in February. “This is my first go around in the acting space and I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to this world.”

Garrett’s death wasn’t the only big surprise this season on Marshals. When the series premiered in March, Yellowstone fans were shocked to learn that Kayce’s wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), died off screen after battling cancer.
“Kayce had such a perfect ending in Yellowstone,” showrunner Spencer Hudnut told TVLine in March. “His dreams had finally come true. As we were trying to figure out how to tell the next chapter in Kayce’s story, it felt like he really needed to be shaken out of that. Unfortunately, tragedy tends to find Kayce, so something bad was going to happen for him one way or the other. It just sort of played out that it was going to be Monica.”
Hudnut said Monica’s death will continue to drive Kayce, adding, “To me, Monica is really guiding Kayce through this first episode, trying to help him find his new path. And if you actually break it down, Tate is at that rally to honor his mother, and Kayce goes there to protect Tate. So if not for Monica, Kayce never would have been in that position and may not have found this path.”
He concluded: “We really wanted to be respectful of the way that we said goodbye to her. I also didn’t want to step on the ending of Yellowstone, because what they had was a beautiful ending. Unfortunately, real life intervened.”
Marshals airs on CBS Sundays at 8 p.m. ET.

Savannah Guthrie’s Husband’s Sweet Mother’s Day Tribute
Savannah Guthrie’s husband, Michael Feldman, is honoring the Today cohost’s strength on Mother’s Day 2026 as her mother, Nancy Guthrie, remains missing.
“To the strongest person I know,” Feldman, 57, wrote via Instagram on Sunday, May 10, alongside a blurry photo of Savannah, 54, embracing their two children, daughter Vale and son Charles.
“Surrounding you with love on Mother’s day,” Feldman added.
Feldman’s touching Mother’s Day tribute comes just days before family, friends, fans and authorities will mark 100 days since the Guthrie matriarch was reported missing earlier this year.
“The Pima County Sheriff’s Department remains fully committed to the investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance,” the Pima County Sheriff’s Office told Us Weekly on Monday, May 4. “This is an active and ongoing investigation, and we continue to work closely with our partners at the FBI.”
The spokesperson continued, “DNA and video analysis are underway, supported by laboratories across the country. Advances in technology are aiding investigative efforts, and tips continue to be received and reviewed.”
Authorities are urging anyone with credible information about the case to contact 88-CRIME or the FBI tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI, adding that “even small details may be significant.”
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has been under fire for its alleged mishandling of the case. FBI Director Kash Patel claimed to Fox News’ Sean Hannity that FBI agents were kept from assisting in the case shortly after Nancy’s February 1 abduction from her Arizona home.
“They did,” Patel claimed on the Tuesday, May 5, episode of Fox News Media’s “Hang Out With Sean Hannity” podcast. “It is a state matter. It’s a state and local law enforcement matter. What we, the FBI, do is say, ‘Hey, we’re here to help. What do you need? What can we do?’ And for four days, we were kept out of the investigation.”
Patel went on to claim that when FBI agents were finally allowed to participate in the ongoing investigation into the 84-year-old’s disappearance, a lot was accomplished and breaks in the case became more frequent.
“We went in and got the Ring doorbell. And we said, ‘Hey, is anyone talking to Google?’” Patel claimed. “I called the leadership at Google, and I said, ‘Look, we know that there was not [a] subscription service to capture all of the data that would have been captured had there been a subscription service. But can we go into the cache? Can we go into the data before it’s deleted and see what we can find?’ That’s why you have that image — because the FBI worked with Google to put that image out.”
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department responded to Patel’s claims in a written statement shared with Us on Tuesday.
“Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is aware of FBI Director Kash Patel’s recent interview and statement. Sheriff Nanos responded to the scene the night of the incident, providing immediate local leadership and oversight,” the statement began. “A member of the FBI Task Force was also notified and present at that scene working alongside our personnel. The FBI was promptly notified by both our department and the Guthrie family. While the FBI Director was not on scene, coordination with the Bureau began without delay.”
The statement continued, “Decisions regarding evidence processing were made on scene based on operational needs. The laboratory utilized by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI Laboratory in Quantico have worked in close partnership from the outset and continue to collaborate in the analysis of evidence.”
The Sheriff’s Department reiterated that they “remain committed to a thorough, coordinated, and fact-based investigation and will continue working closely with our federal partners as the process moves forward.”

Martin Short Breaks Silence on Daughter Katherine’s Death
Martin Short is speaking out for the first time about his daughter Katherine Hartley Short’s death.
“It’s been a nightmare for the family,” Short told CBS Sunday Morning of Katherine’s death on Sunday, May 10, per Variety. “But the understanding [is] that mental health and cancer, like my wife’s, are both diseases, and sometimes with diseases they are terminal. And my daughter fought for a long time with extreme mental health, borderline personality disorder, other things, and did the best she couldn’t until she couldn’t.”
Katherine — whom Martin, 75, shared with his late wife, Nancy Dolman — died on February 23 at age 42.
“It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time,” Martin’s rep told Us Weekly in a February 24 statement. “Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”
At the time, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to Us that officers responded to a radio call about a possible suicide attempt in the Hollywood Hills on February 23 at 6:43 p.m. Upon their arrival, authorities found a deceased female at the scene.
The day after the news broke of Katherine’s death, Us confirmed via online records that her cause of death was officially ruled a suicide.
According to 911 dispatch audio obtained by TMZ, the person who made the call told a dispatcher they were at Katherine’s Hollywood Hills home but unable to enter a bedroom within the residence. The outlet later claimed that Katherine was found “behind a locked door and with a note nearby.”

In the wake of the tragedy, Martin and his friend and collaborator Steve Martin postponed their comedy shows in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, on February 27 and 28, respectively. The venues cited “unforeseen circumstances” and assured that purchased tickets would be honored for a future “rescheduled” date.
One of Katherine’s neighbors — who lived near her for more than 10 years and asked to remain anonymous — exclusively told Us in February that she showed “no indication of struggle” prior to her death, pointing out that “depression is often a silent” and “hidden killer.”
“Katherine was a private person but that doesn’t mean she wasn’t friendly. She was quite outgoing,” the neighbor revealed, adding that they’d sometimes “hear and see her laughing with friends” on her front porch and she “always said ‘Hi.’”
“She was a voracious reader and could talk deeply about the books she’d read,” the neighbor told Us. “She had the nicest, most beautiful orange tree in her front yard. It was the envy of all the neighbors. Somehow the bugs that affected our trees did not land in hers.”
Katherine was a licensed clinical social worker in Los Angeles and worked part-time at a health clinic, helping with community outreach, support groups and psychotherapy. She also reportedly worked with a nonprofit organization focused on breaking the ongoing stigmas surrounding mental health.
Martin and Nancy were married from December 1980 until her death from ovarian cancer in August 2010 at age 58. The couple adopted Katherine and their sons, Oliver, 39, and Henry, 36.

Jed Duggar Returns to Social Media After Brother Joseph’s Arrest
Jed Duggar is paying tribute to his wife, Katey Duggar, on Mother’s Day in his first social media post after brother Joseph Duggar’s arrest.
“Happy Mother’s Day to my beautiful wife, Katey!” Jed, 27, wrote via Instagram on Sunday, May 10. “You are the best mom our kids could ever ask for. Watching you love Truett, Nora, Emma, and Elsie so well makes me love you even more.”
While sharing photos of Katey smiling with their four kids, Jed added, “Thankful every day for you and the life we’re building together. We all love you so much.”
In the comments section, Jed’s sister-in-law Hannah Duggar wrote, “Happy Mother’s Day, Katey! 💕.” (Hannah tied the knot with Jed’s brother Jeremiah Duggar in 2022.)
Months before Jed’s post, Joseph, 31, was arrested amid accusations of molesting a now 14-year-old victim when she was 9 years old on a family vacation in Florida. Joseph was charged with lewd and lascivious behavior involving molestation of a victim less than 12 years old and lewd and lascivious behavior conducted by a person 18 years or older, per a press release from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office.
Joseph has pleaded not guilty to all charges. He was released on a $600,000 bond in March and has since reunited with his wife, Kendra Duggar.
The alleged victim told a detective from Arkansas’s Tontitown Police Department in a forensic interview that there were “several instances of sexual abuse” involving Joseph, according to the affidavit obtained by Us Weekly. At the time, Joseph was 25 years old and Kendra was pregnant with their third baby. (The pair share four children.)
The accuser recalled feeling “uncomfortable” and “confused” during the incidents, sharing that Joseph “eventually approached the victim and apologized for his actions,” at which time “the incidents stopped occurring,” according to the affidavit.
In a court motion filed earlier this month, Joseph’s legal team asked a Florida court to allow them to question officials from the Department of Children & Families, Big Ben, Child Protection Team, who interviewed the alleged victim prior to his arrest.
Joseph’s lawyers reserved the right to speak with “any other law enforcement or child protection agency involved with this investigation (including out of state equivalents, specifically Arkansas).” They are also seeking access to evidence gathered by child protection officials in their investigation.
“The Defendant is entitled to discovery of the witness testimony, including records and evidence in the possession of the witnesses for a fair determination of the Defendant’s guilt or innocence at trial,” his legal brief read. (Us reached out to Joseph’s legal team for comment at the time.)
If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, contact the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673). If you or someone you know is experiencing child abuse, call or text Child Help Hotline at 1-800-422-4453.
