Perfect 70s Mystery Thriller Is Legendary Director’s Paranoid Classic

By Robert Scucci
| Published

As somebody who works regularly in audio, I can’t believe that I never laid eyes on 1974’s The Conversation. Written, directed, and produced by Francis Ford Coppola, The Conversation is a straight-up neo-noir mystery thriller that would make any audiophile want to immediately start tinkering with their setup just to see what it’s capable of. If you find yourself sitting in that camp, however, err on the side of caution, because you never know what kind of conversations you’ll pick up on, or what kind of trouble they might land you in.

From a technical standpoint, The Conversation is a great watch even for those who don’t care about audio engineering at all, because you’re never slammed with needless jargon or those dreaded junk-science explanations that tend to derail movies like this. There’s poetry in every switch flip and dial turn, each one nudging you closer to the truth as the paranoid conspiracy takes shape without giving away the entire farm too early.

Not A Private Eye, But A Private Ear

The Conversation 1974

The Conversation wastes no time establishing its conflict as we’re introduced to Harry R. Caul (Gene Hackman), a savant-like surveillance expert whose claim to fame is wiretapping his subjects and documenting his findings. Haunted by a past investigation in which his work resulted in a triple murder, Harry is a deeply private man, as well as a painfully meticulous one. He’s supposed to maintain a strict level of emotional detachment due to the nature of his work, but his conscience has a habit of creeping in when it’s least convenient.

When tasked by his client, known only as The Director (Robert Duvall), to eavesdrop on a couple walking in circles around Union Square, Harry’s expertise becomes immediately clear. He uses multiple microphones planted at various vantage points to capture fragments of wandering dialogue, all with the intention of splicing the recordings together later to construct a single, unbroken conversation.

The Conversation 1974

While isolating dialogue buried beneath a sea of static, one sentence slowly emerges from the noise: “He’d kill us if he got the chance.” Disturbed by what he’s uncovered, Harry attempts to seek clarification from The Director, only to be intercepted by Martin Stett (Harrison Ford), the Director’s guarded and vaguely menacing assistant. Fearing that his work may once again result in innocent bloodshed, Harry finds himself trapped between his talent, his trade, and his conscience, struggling to serve his client while grappling with the possibility that the people he’s listening to may be in real danger.

It’s Not What, It’s How

The Conversation 1974

Francis Ford Coppola was smart enough to lean into The Conversation’s technical aspects without alienating the audience through overexplanation. Thanks to Gene Hackman’s effortless handling of complicated audio technology, we’re shown a workflow that reveals an enormous amount about Harry’s personality without a single line of exposition spelling it out. The muscle memory on display as he spools tape, wires together homemade EQ boxes, and obsessively hunches over his workstation to dial in just the right amount of clarity before delivering his findings to The Director makes for a remarkably rich character study. Harry playing the hell out of his saxophone as a way to blow off stream when he’s stressed out is just the icing on the cake.

The Conversation’s mystery itself is packed with twists and reversals that force you to question where everyone’s loyalties lie, and where Harry fits into the larger picture. This isn’t a traditional whodunit so much as a “who will do it?” and that distinction matters. The tension comes from watching Harry slowly realize that he may not just be an observer, but a participant, all while his paranoia feels increasingly justified. The added unease from the assumption that other surveillance professionals could be listening in on him as well only deepens the dread, leaving you to wonder which tapes will end up in the wrong hands as Harry desperately tries to close out the job without any blood on his hands.

No Mercy, Just Megabytes: Justice Goes Digital

Defying expectations have never looked so good. Wicked: For Good swoops onto the big screen with just the right amount of magic, mischief, and musical prowess to keep audiences under its spell. Whether you’re an Oz-obsessed fan or a newcomer just following the yellow-brick hype road, this film ensures you’re in for a wickedly fun time — broomsticks optional.

Plot

Now demonized as the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba lives in exile in the Ozian forest, while Glinda resides at the palace in Emerald City, reveling in the perks of fame and popularity. As an angry mob rises against the Wicked Witch, she’ll need to reunite with Glinda to transform herself, and all of Oz, for good.

Movie Review

Wicked: For Good is the enchanting cinematic payoff fans of the Broadway sensation have waited years to see. What makes this adaptation soar is not only its visual spectacle but the emotional depth it brings to an already beloved story. With stunning set-pieces and a vibrantly reimagined Oz, the film manages to feel both familiar and refreshingly new.

Erivo returns with real gravitas as Elphaba — now firmly embodying her role as the Wicked Witch of the West. Her performance is powerful, emotionally layered, and yet more vulnerable here than ever. She balances Elphaba’s fierce sense of justice with a deep-seated loneliness, making her stakes feel utterly real. Grande reprises her role as Glinda, and she brings a luminous charm and warmth that contrast beautifully with Erivo’s intensity. In For Good, Glinda’s journey becomes darker and more reflective, and Grande handles that tonal shift deftly, giving Glinda more heart and less glitter — without losing her signature effervescence. As the Wizard, Goldblum brings his trademark charisma and sly menace. His character feels morally complicated in this installment — more than just the typical “all-powerful ruler,” his performance hints at decay and corruption, which gives the film a richer, more ominous undercurrent.

A Truly Magical Cast

Bailey returns as Fiyero, and his presence feels more grounded and serious than in the first film. He’s less whimsical and more conflicted, which works really well given the emotional and romantic tensions at the heart of For Good. His chemistry with both Glinda and Elphaba helps anchor some of the film’s more intimate moments. Yeoh brings elegance and a subtle menace to Madame Morrible. She’s not just a power broker in Oz — her performance suggests hidden motivations and emotional stakes. She’s no one-note villain, and Yeoh makes her feel like someone operating in shades of grey.

Boq, played by Slater, has a more consequential arc in this film than before. In For Good, his transformation (both emotional and narrative) is more defined, and Slater gets more room to shine. His path feels earnest, and he does well to bring complexity to a character who could easily be sidelined. Bode plays Nessarose, Elphaba’s sister, and the film gives her storyline more weight. Notably, on-screen adaptations changed some aspects of her arc (for example, she flies instead of walking, in the film version), which has raised conversation. Her performance is heartfelt, and her portrayal adds both emotional tension and a fresh dynamic to the sisters’ relationship.

The movie thrives on its central friendship — a layered, complex connection that evolves with warmth, humor, and heart. Both lead performances shine brilliantly, bringing dynamic charisma and genuine vulnerability to their roles. Their chemistry is magnetic, and every shared moment reinforces the emotional core of the narrative.

Musically, longtime fans will rejoice: the iconic songs land with powerfully. The added cinematic scale allows the soundtrack to envelop viewers more completely, while fresh arrangements and new compositions enrich the experience without overshadowing the classics. The choreography and vocal performances elevate each number, crafting scenes that feel like pure, goosebump-filled magic.

From a technical standpoint, the film sparkles. Production design embraces creativity — from whimsical costumes to awe-inspiring landscapes that expand the lore of Oz beautifully. Thoughtful lighting and ambitious camera work turn fantasy into something tangible across every glittering frame. Cameos from certain Wizard of Oz characters ties the story of Glinda and Elphaba into the classic Oz mythology, while not shifting the focus away from the witches.

Tonally, the movie balances humor, heart, and high-stakes drama with grace. It honors big Broadway emotions while embracing the subtleties that film storytelling allows. Themes of identity, courage, social perception, and moral complexity are delivered in a way that audiences of all ages can connect with.

I highly encourage you to go and watch the prequel, Wicked, and perhaps even consider watching the 1939 classic, ‘The Wizard of Oz’.

Ariana Grande (Glinda) and Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) in Wicked: For Good (Giles Keyte / Universal Pictures)

Concluding Remarks

At its best, Wicked: For Good reminds viewers that every story has more than one perspective — especially when the world insists on labeling someone a villain. The pacing is brisk yet grounded, ensuring the emotional journey remains compelling from the first note to the final curtain. The returning cast is one of the biggest strengths of Wicked: For Good. Erivo and Grande remain the heart of the story, delivering performances with real emotional weight. The supporting cast — Goldblum, Yeoh, Bailey, Slater, Bode, and others — deepen the world of Oz with nuance, not just spectacle. Their character arcs feel earned, and the film does justice to the prequel setup laid down in the first movie.

A triumphant musical fantasy that casts a spell from start to finish.
Even without spoilers, it’s easy to say that Wicked: For Good doesn’t just defy gravity — it defies expectations. With unforgettable performances, a beloved soundtrack revitalized, and dazzling cinematic artistry, this film is set to become a classic of the genre.

If you’ve been waiting “for good” for this adaptation… good news. The wait was worth it. I rate this movie 4 out of 5. There is no post-credits scene, so no last minute trick unfortunately. Make sure to follow the yellow-brick road to your nearest cinema, and experience the magic on the big screen, because there is no place like cinema!

18-Year-Old Arrested After Woman Was Fatally Shot Outside of Little Havana Store

Published

on

An 18-year-old male was arrested for his alleged involvement in a shooting that took place outside of a convenience store in Little Havana, which left one bystander dead.

Miami Police officials confirmed that 39-year-old Desiree Gonzalez died in the shooting that took place at Habibi Mini Market on Southwest Third Street in December 2025, according to NBC Miami.

Surveillance footage from the shooting showed Gonzalez wearing a red jacket and a black hat while she was inside of the store. Just a few minutes later, a group of people riding on their bikes broke out into an argument with two people outside the store.

Gonzalez then left the store just as gunshots were fired between the two groups. She found herself in the middle of the shooting and was hit by gunfire.

An investigation is underway in Florida after a woman’s body was found inside a freezer at a Dollar Tree store in Miami on the morning of Sunday, December 14. Miami Police confirmed to Us Weekly that officers arrived at the Dollar Tree located at 968 Southwest 8th Street around 8 a.m. after an employee called […]

“After the shooting the subjects fled westbound on their motorized bikes down Southwest 3rd Street towards Southwest 19th Avenue,” police said, per the outlet. “The two intended targets also fled the scene northbound on a bicycle Southwest 18th Avenue from Southwest 3rd Street.”

Gonzalez was rushed to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries sustained in the shooting.

Authorities stated that Gonzalez was not the intended target of the shooting.

An investigation into the shooting was launched soon after, and authorities found footage from the Habibi Mini Market that showed the shooting subjects visiting the store on multiple occasions. According to a heavily redacted arrest report reviewed by the outlet, police identified one of the people involved in the shooting and interviewed him. The interview was redacted from the report, so it’s not clear what was revealed when he spoke to police.

As the investigation continued, police found that cellphone data placed 18-year-old Jeferzon Noel Mendoza Herrera at the convenience store at the time of the shooting.

“The cellular device’s historical data was also corroborated based on surveillance footage, statements provided by codefendants, and records for co-defendant’s devices,” the arrest report stated.

After he was linked to the crime, Mendoza Herrera was arrested on Friday, January 30, and was charged with first-degree murder, according to online records viewed by Us Weekly.

In addition to the shooting arrest, Mendoza Herrera has also been accused of attempted murder in a separate incident that took place on January 22 at Northwest 2nd Avenue and 75th Street in Miami, according to the outlet.

The Miami Police Department confirmed to Us Weekly that four other people – Abraham Estrada Solano, Cristian Reyes, Mauricio Jose Baquedano and an unnamed minor – were also arrested in connection to both of the shootings.

Mendoza Herrera is currently in custody and has been denied bond as of time of publication. It’s not currently clear if he has retained legal counsel or entered a plea regarding any of the charges he is facing.

Gonzalez’s friends told CBS News that she was experiencing homelessness at the time of her death. Her loved ones added that they were devastated by her death, with one person saying they spoke to her just hours before the shooting.

The latest disclosures have shed new light on the depth of the former Duchess of York’s relationship with the disgraced financier, revealing messages in which Ferguson praised Epstein and even compared him to a sibling.

Ferguson’s fallout because of her ties with Epstein has been swift and continuous. She was first dropped from her role at a children’s hospice, followed by the reported cancellation of her forthcoming book. Now, her charity residence has also shut its doors.

A spokesperson for Ferguson’s charity organization, Sarah’s Trust, which was founded in 2020, has announced its closure for the foreseeable future.

“Our chair, Sarah Ferguson, and the board of trustees have agreed that, with regret, the charity will shortly close for the foreseeable future,” the rep said in a February 3 statement, per PEOPLE Magazine. “This has been under discussion and in train for some months.”

The spokeswoman noted that they were proud of their achievements, which included partnering with over 60 charities in 20+ countries, delivering education, healthcare, crisis relief, and environmental projects.

The closure comes just five months after Ferguson was removed as a patron of Julia’s House Children’s Hospice.

At the time, leaked emails between Ferguson and Epstein surfaced, including one in which she allegedly apologized to him for publicly denouncing him and insisted she had never called him a pedophile.

She reportedly went on to describe Epstein as a “steadfast, generous, and supreme friend.”

Shortly after the message came to light, Julia’s House announced that it would be “inappropriate for her to continue as a patron,” according to The Blast.

Another blow followed with reports that Ferguson’s children’s book, “Flora and Fern: Kindness Along the Way,” was pulled before reaching bookstores.

The book was originally scheduled for release on October 9 last year, before being postponed to November 20. Sources later claimed the delay was intended to quietly remove the title altogether.

As The Blast reported at the time, insiders suggested the decision was directly linked to the controversy surrounding Ferguson. One source bluntly said, “It’s not been delayed, it’s being pulped,” adding that no one would want to purchase it.

Ferguson’s fallout even had actress Natalie Dormer, who starred in “The Lady,” a film centered on Ferguson’s life, refusing to promote the project.

According to The Blast, the “Game of Thrones” star disclosed that the information about Ferguson’s relationship with the sex offender came to light after the shooting of the project ended.

However, she was not going to partake in publicity as she could not “reconcile her values” with Ferguson’s behavior, which to her was “inexcusable.”

Dormer further donated all her proceeds from the film to an organization for abused children.

Tom Hardy Surges in His Most Captivating and Terrifying Role Ever

Published

on

Bronson with his fists raised

Though he doesn’t do it exclusively, Tom Hardy is exceptionally good at playing weirdos. Bane is a weirdo, Mad Max is a weirdo (he is mad, in the Hatter sense), and Venom is one of superhero fiction’s great weirdos. But it was relatively early in Hardy’s acting career that he gave an incredible performance in the role of terrifying real-life weirdo Charlie Bronson. Now that movie, Nicolas Winding Refn’s fascinatingly intense and bizarre Bronson, is brutally beating its way up the streaming charts on HBO Max.

Released in 2008, Bronson has a 75 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and was an early international hit for cult-favorite Danish filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn. It just recently landed on HBO Max, and it’s steadily climbing the streamer’s top 10 list (according to FlixPatrol). It’s outperforming crowd-pleaser The Notebook and approaching Oscar winner The Shape of Water and this year’s Oscar favorite Sinners.

What Is ‘Bronson’ and Why Is It So Bizarre?

Bronson with his fists raised
Still of Bronson, featuring Charles Bronson (Tom Hardy) raising his fists.
Image via Vertigo Films

Loosely based on the real life of British prisoner Charlie Bronson (not the actor, but named after the actor), Bronson follows the man as he goes from a kid who enjoys getting into fights at school to a man who… still enjoys getting into fights all the time. Bronson spends many years in various prisons and psychiatric institutions, often in solitary confinement, and he comes to enjoy the lack of societal structure in prison — he thinks of it like a stay in a hotel.

Still, despite his violent outbursts and love of fighting, he insists that he has never actually killed anyone and that his goal in life isn’t to hurt people. He actually wants to be famous for doing something special, and eventually discovers that art is just as satisfying an outlet for his emotions as fighting is. Or at least that’s the case for a while.

It’s a good story, which is why the real guy is a bit of a celebrity, but there are two absolutely brilliant ideas that push Bronson over the top: The first is that the plot is presented sometimes as stripped-back prison interviews that Hardy is giving as Bronson about his life and other times as a one-man show that Bronson is presenting onstage in front of a live audience. In the interviews, he wears a prison uniform and is darker and more straightforward. In the stage show, he sings, wears face paint, and cracks jokes about the horrible stuff he’s doing and/or experiencing. It’s a little like what Joker: Folie à Deux wished it had been.

The second brilliant idea is that Hardy plays Bronson like he’s in a comedy — but it’s not that Hardy is in a comedy, it’s that Bronson himself is in a comedy. The whole thing is a show for him, and whether he’s punching a bunch of dudes for money in an underground street fight or antagonizing prison guards just so they’ll lash out, it’s all a performance. The whole movie is his presentation of his own life story, and Hardy’s work as the bald, mustachioed fighter is just absolutely fascinating (a dramatic foreshadowing of why his work in The Dark Knight Rises and Fury Road and Venom is so memorable). And, for a movie that is dark and brutally violent, it is also genuinely pretty funny.

Bronson is currently streaming on HBO Max.

Plastic Surgeons Dr. Layke and Dr. Danielpour on Why Overfilled Looks Are Out (and What's Worth Doing Instead)

Celebrity board certified plastic surgeons Dr. John Layke and Dr. Payman Danielpour are emphasizing the over in overdone.

The Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery Group partners sat down with ET to break down why exaggerated filler trends are fading, and what A-list patients and beyond should be investing in instead.

“I’m over BBLs, overfilled lips, and thread lifts,” Layke explained.

“The fake look with overfilled faces and buttocks is done,” Danielpour added.

So, what’s in? According to the doctors, it’s all about treatments designed to improve skin quality and texture without changing the face.

Beverly Hills MD

“People want to address sun damage, dark spots, and wrinkles. … I’m seeing a rise in microneedling with exosomes and stem cells,” Layke shared.

And with colder months underway, it’s an ideal season for options that require a bit more downtime.

“The absolute favorite winter treatment is the fractionated CO2 laser. … People are using regenerative medicine for antiaging, red-light therapy, hyperbaric chambers, and all things non-invasive,” Danielpour continued.

But if you’re looking for more dramatic changes, the pair says surgical requests are rising too, particularly among those who are hoping to tighten and tone from head to toe with subtle, personalized results.

Beverly Hills MD

“I’m getting lots of requests for face and neck lifts,” Layke revealed.

Danielpour added, “We use artistry and science to create natural beauty. … The work is always unassuming. … I am seeing a lot of people with significant weight loss, which equated to significant skin laxity. I’m performing everything from breast lifts to arm lifts, to thigh lifts, and most frequently, tummy tucks.”

If you can’t make it into their Beverly Hills, California office for an appointment just yet, the duo suggests stocking up on products from their Beverly Hills MD line.

“Your routine should include a Vitamin C serum, a retinol, and a heavier moisturizer to combat harsher conditions. … Our Dermal Repair Complex helps enhance skin from within, and the Lift and Firm Sculpting Cream provides a firm and taught appearance,” Layke said.

As for Danielpour’s must-haves: “A combination of our Dermal Repair Complex and Collagen Booster are great non-invasive ways to improve the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin.”

Beverly Hills MD

Whether you’re going the laser route, booking a lift, or leaning into skincare, both agree lifestyle basics play a major role.

“Avoid excessive sun exposure, wear mechanical sunscreen, drink plenty of water, and avoid smoking and processed foods,” Layke suggested.

“Use sunscreen, exercise, hydrate, use a sauna daily, and live a happy and fulfilled life,” Danielpour recommended.

Fans React To His “Real” Personality In New Video

Desmond Scott Real Personality Calm Demeanor New Introduction Video Fans React  Kristy Sarah Scott

Despite any heat on the internet, Desmond Scott plans to stay in the social media kitchen. A new “get to know me” video made that clear on Tuesday (Feb. 3). Late last month, he resumed content-sharing amid a divorce from Kristy ‘Sarah’ Scott. Now, he’s cementing his online presence without the “chaotic” influencer. And while he didn’t spill any breakup tea in his new video, his demeanor alone has fans chatting and — in some cases — begging for more of THIS Desmond Scott! Is this calm, smooth Des the REAL Des? His supporters seem to think so.

From A Loud Laugh To A Smooth Voice, Hi Desmond Scott!

2020 was the year Desmond and Kristy Scott’s social media presence took off. Two clean-cut parents, a beautiful wife with a goofy spirit and a FIONE dad with skills in the kitchen and behind a camera. Fans fell in love with home life, their “gremlins,” as Kristy Sarah calls Vance and Westin, and the way the couple embraced each other’s quirks. Desmond’s laugh in reaction to Kristy’s cake, costume and flipping pranks became a signature of The Scotts.

It’s now been a month and a few days since Kristy Scott filed for divorce in Texas. She accused him of infidelity in the paperwork, and after the news broke on the internet days later, he publicly apologized and took accountability. But he also admitted that he had asked for a divorce and that swayed some fans to forgiveness. One day after apologizing, someone filmed him making out with a 24-year-old influencer in a Houston cocktail bar.

It might go without saying, but these days? Yeah, you will NOT hear that same high-pitched cackle in Desmond’s new, solo content. No more “Krisssttyyyyyy.” Instead, he’s got YouTube fans like @Asdfghjklsemicolon saying his new “get to know me” video feels like “being in a really cool jazz club…so chill and relaxing.” Under his Instagram teaser for the same introduction video, fans also noted his new demeanor.

@jasminemikayla wrote, “He looks refreshed, I’m all for it.”

@craftingwithcassy, “Yooo i’ve never really heard you talk. Ok i see you coming out your shell Des. Let’s get it 🙌🏾”

“This the most he has ever spoken!! I feel like his personality was shadowed allot and I’m not blaming Kristy at all I love her and that’s the dynamic they built. It’s just unfortunate that the separation seems like it affected her meanwhile he looks happier than ever .. I hope he still treats her with respect during this time ! Hope they both enjoy being single and learning themself for a while,” @simply_brittny commented.

@first_gen1 added, “Didn’t even realize dude had a personality like this, he was so overpowered! Boss up big dawg! This man seems Happy!”

“It’s like he finally gets to be himself like he’s freeeee lol good for him tho,” @lordlizzz wrote.

@isaiah.zeia said, “why all of a sudden i feel like he’s himself. 💯 like he doesn’t have to code switch when he talk now.”

And it’s not just the voice that’s smooth. It’s the fits, the beard, and the swag. Take THIS video for example. Still the dad fans fell for, but now the 32-year-old bachelor the girlies can actively thirst for and they are.

Male fans are also sliding with comments like, “Bro look relieved,” per @dleeprobarber. Some, like Kevin Gates, are taking an even stronger approach to standing by Desmond.

What’s Next For Desmond?

So, we know he can cook. And he plans to do more of that, recipes, how-to series and all that. In his introduction video, Desmond even talked about naming his new solo community, saying he doesn’t love the suggestion, “The Dez Cooking Club.” Cooking, he said, started with spending time in the kitchen with his mom as a child. The love stuck, and he became a self-taught chef. No professional training, just passion and harsh meal ratings between him and his mom.

Aside from teaching the boyfriends and husbands how to chef it up, Scott said he’ll be sharing lifestyle content on his accounts. He likes fashion and loves being a dad to his boys. Both of those will be part of his new content, he said. Ultimately though, cooking will take center stage.

“I’m here to teach your man how to come cook for you. Desmond still wants the husbands and the men out there to cook for their woman. I think y’all need some help in the kitchen.”
