Stargate fans experienced the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat in short order over the past 12 months. Last December, a reboot of the long-dormant science fiction franchise was announced to be in development at Prime Video, with several key staff members from the series’ earlier incarnations on board. Then, earlier this year, that reboot was cancelled, after allegedly being too heavily targeted at Stargate‘s existing fanbase. Now, the streaming success of the franchise is calling the logic of that decision into question.

Stargate began life as a 1994 film of the same name, courtesy of director Roland Emmerich and screenwriter Dean Devlin. It centered around an ancient alien device, the titular Stargate, which was discovered in the sands of Egypt; once excavated and reactivated by the US military, it was used to send a team of soldiers and specialists to a distant world ruled by aliens masquerading as gods. The film was a modest success, and was eventually expanded into a universe of long-running TV series, running for over 350 collective episodes.

Stargate: Atlantis, the second spin-off Stargate TV series, is currently leading the streaming pack from its current home on MGM+. The series, which ran for 100 episodes and 5 seasons between 2004 and 2009, is currently the #1 series on the service. It’s not the only Stargate series in the top ten, either. Stargate Universe, the series that saw a starship hurled billions of light years away from Earth, is coming in at #5, while one space below it is the original “mothership” series, Stargate: SG-1. The franchise has remained largely inert since the cancellation of Universe in 2011, despite several revival attempts; these streaming numbers appear to show that there’s still a fanbase for it out there.

What Is ‘Stargate: Atlantis’ About?

Spinning out of the seventh-season finale and eighth-season premieres of Stargate: SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis centers around the discovery of an Antarctic outpost created by the mysterious alien race known as the Ancients. That outpost turns out to lead to the lost city of Atlantis, which is a fantastical city submerged beneath the oceans of an alien world. A Stargate Command team is sent to secure it, while dealing with refugees from other worlds. One such refugee, who first appeared in the second season, was the warrior Ronon Dex (Jason Momoa).

All around us are familiar faces, and 25 years later, those familiar faces may just be finding their way back to us. Some movies stay with you, and while they might not hit with audiences immediately, they just need time. Quarter of a century might well be the case for Richard Kelly’s (Southland Tales) strange mixture of science fiction, psychological thriller, and coming-of-age drama. Now, Frank is putting the rabbit suit back on.

In 1988, Donnie Darko doesn’t get along with his family, teachers or classmates, but he finds a kindred spirit in Gretchen and guidance from a compassionate psychiatrist who believes hypnosis may unlock hidden truths. Meanwhile, Donnie is haunted by Frank, a mysterious giant bunny only he can see. When a jet engine crashes into his bedroom and narrowly misses him, Donnie is drawn into a series of increasingly strange events that seem governed by forces beyond explanation. And now, we can join Donnie once more.

Donnie Darko is officially returning to theaters, 25 years later, via Fathom Entertainment. The three-day engagement begins on October 2, otherwise known as ‘Donnie Darko Day’. The cast is led by Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) as Donnie alongside Jena Malone (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) as Gretchen Ross, Drew Barrymore (Scream) as Karen Pomeroy, Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Dark Knight) as Elizabeth Darko, Mary McDonnell (Battlestar Galactica) as Rose Darko, Noah Wyle (The Pitt) as Kenneth Monnitoff, Patrick Swayze (Road House) as Jim Cunningham, and Seth Rogen (Superbad) as Ricky Danforth.

Was ‘Donnie Darko’ a Success?

Not initially. Donnie Darko was a box-office disappointment when it was released in 2001, earning only around $7.5 million worldwide against a reported $4.5 million production budget. And in fairness, its prospects weren’t helped by the fact that it featured a plane crash just a few weeks after 9/11. The image of a jet engine crashing into a house made it particularly difficult to market at the time. But it was at home, via DVD and home video, that the movie began to gain traction and it turned Kelly’s debut from an obscure and forgotten release into one of the biggest cult movies of the 2000s, turning Gyllenhaal into a major star. Fathom Entertainment Vice President of Marketing Shannah Miller highlighted that unusual journey while announcing the anniversary release:

The five people killed when an Amazon cargo jet ran off the runway at Miami International Airport were all inside a van, per the Associated Press. This vehicle was reportedly used to shuttle cleaning crews to planes for cleaning, authorities said.

Details About Victims In Amazon Cargo Jet Crash In Miami

The Amazon cargo jet overran the runway while landing on Sunday (September 6). It slammed into the van on airport property, careened through a fence, and then smashed into an SUV on a city street. Five other people were injured. The pilot and co-pilot have been released from the hospital, Miami-Dade County Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said Tuesday. Two people remain in critical condition and a third is in stable condition.

Cordero-Stutz said the deceased ranged in age from 47 to 75. Also, the five people killed were all in a van owned by Professional Ocean Service Corp., a company that cleans planes. The company said it wouldn’t comment on the crash out of respect for the families who lost loved ones.

“Our employees are far more than the people who work beside us each day, they are family, and they are deeply loved. Our hearts and prayers are with every employee and every family whose lives have been forever changed,” the company said in a statement Tuesday.

Is The Miami Airport Setup A Problem? 

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the crash. One focus will be on the lack of a system to slow and stop speeding jets. Miami is not one of the 120 U.S. airports with lightweight, crushable material at the ends of runways. The Federal Aviation Administration says that material has saved around 500 lives. However, experts said that even without a runway excursion system, Miami’s airport appears to comply with federal rules because it has a 1,000-foot safety buffer at the ends of its runways.

NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said Monday her agency’s goal is to prevent tragedies, but runway excursions continue to happen even after the board has suggested installing the systems in the past.

“Our recommendations must be implemented or we’re going to be here again,” she said at a Monday news conference.’

The NTSB said the plane barreled roughly 1,300 feet (396 meters) past the end of the runway. Homendy called the scene “utter devastation,” with pieces of the vehicles, air bags, destroyed navigational equipment and fencing along the plane’s route. She said she had to be careful because jet fuel was still all around 24 hours after the crash.

What Else To Know About The Crash

The Amazon jet was landing after a two-hour flight from Puerto Rico as storms brewed around the Miami airport. Strong winds over 25 knots were reported Saturday afternoon. Experts who viewed the video of the landing said it appears that a strong tailwind propelled the plane far down the runway past the point where it was supposed to land. The plane remained airborne without flaring the nose to force the wheels down.

It is not immediately clear why the pilot didn’t abort landing and go around to try again. Air traffic controllers also had not changed the approach to the runway to allow the plane to land into a headwind. Airports routinely change the direction planes land on a runway when the winds shift.

Additionally, the flight had been operated by 21 Air, a cargo carrier based in North Carolina. The 32-year-old Boeing 767 was originally built to carry passengers and flew for several airlines in foreign countries for more than two decades. Then, it was converted to a cargo plane in 2015, according to flight-tracking site Flightradar24.

It was an experience he’d previously described as “healing” after the nightmarish production that was X2, and now, the wait is nearly over to see him back in action over 20 years later. Before that, though, he’s playing the villain for a much different globe-spanning adventure.

On October 9, Viva Kids will bring Treasure Trekkers to theaters for the first time with a new feature-length film based on the show and J.S. Friedman‘s beloved children’s book seriesthat inspired it, Maurice’s Valises. It’ll aim to capture the same sense of discovery and friendship that have made the stories of young explorers traveling the world so compelling to audiences for years. At the center of the film is Mip, a 12-year-old adopted monkey navigating a world of cats and rodents until he finds a magical map to Empathra in his family home. Upon touching it, he’s teleported to the new land and begins exploring in search of his origins, all while trying to restore compassion among its people. Collider can exclusively share the official trailer that teases the twists and turns of the perilous journey, including the friends he makes along the way, like Mac and Mo, and the dangers ahead of him.

The footage opens with Mip experiencing the trials of middle school, where, as a marmoset, he’s picked on by just about everyone. Adopted by a cat, he’s uncertain of his place in the world, which makes the map to Empathra so enticing. Upon being whisked away, meeting Mac and Mo, and becoming part of the Treasure Trekkers with them, he finally has a chance to learn his origin story. Unfortunately, he needs to keep a low profile lest he be caught by Cumming’s vain, flamboyant King Clarence, who appears to have some connection with the monkey’s lineage and wants to keep the truth under wraps. To learn where Mip really came from, the Trekkers traverse mountains, temples, waterfalls, and jungles, connecting with fellow monkeys, dodging danger at seemingly every turn, and delivering lighthearted fun on a grand scale.

‘Treasure Trekkers’ Assembles a Cast of Beloved Voice-Acting Veterans

Writer-director Kevin Munroe took the wheel for the Treasure Trekkers movie, bringing a wealth of experience from the 2007 TMNT and the 2016 video game adaptation, Ratchet & Clank. This marks his first feature credit in eight years, after previously co-directing Troll: The Tale of a Tail. For his return to the big screen, he got to work with a wealth of exciting names beyond Cumming. The main trio of Mip, Mo, and Mac are voiced by Teen Titans Go! co-stars Greg Cipes and Tara Strong, alongside Meredith Bull. Also prominently featured are 30 Rock fan-favorite Jack McBrayer and fellow voice-acting legend John DiMaggio, best known as Futurama‘s Bender and Adventure Time‘s Jake the Dog.

There’s nothing quite like a great mystery film. Pretty much any and all movies revolve around not knowing what’s going to happen next, but history’s best mystery movies take that concept to a whole other level, telling stories that revolve entirely around a central enigma that the main characters must proceed to investigate and solve. It’s tough to truly nail the mystery genre, but over the course of the last six years, there have been six particular mystery movie masterpieces which have proven to perfectly understand everything that makes fans of the genre click.

Whether it’s a family detective movie like The Sheep Detectives or an award-winning thriller like It Was Just An Accident, the best mystery films that the big screen has seen since 2020 are all bound to go down in history as some of the best movies of the decade by the time 2030 rolls in. What’s even better is that, as delectably diverse as the mystery genre can be, these six masterpieces offer something for virtually everyone. Some of them are intense, others are funny, others take themselves entirely seriously, and others are willing to have some silly fun with their central mystery. Regardless, they’re all masterfully suspenseful and all-around essential viewing for fans of the genre.

‘The Sheep Detectives’ (2026)

Leonie Swann‘s German mystery novel Three Bags Full is one of the most inventive and freshly original detective stories that literature has ever seen, if only because its main detectives aren’t humans at all, but rather a group of sheep. It’s an idea that lent itself flawlessly to a family-friendly cinematic adaptation, but even then, the trailers for Kyle Balda‘s The Sheep Detectives made it seem like little more than a silly romp. In the end, not only did the movie end up being one of the biggest surprise hits of 2026 so far, but genuinely one of the best mystery flicks the world has seen since the 2020s rolled in.

Just like its trailers showed, The Sheep Detectives knows precisely when to have some goofy fun with its premise, offering plenty of elaborate gags and delightfully effective family-friendly humor. When things get more serious, however, they get surprisingly serious, with the movie being one of the most unexpected tear-jerkers of the last six years. It’s a beautiful, life-affirming ensemble piece about the importance of grief and mortality for the human condition, a movie so wonderfully mature and complex that it can easily be counted among the best family movies of the last 10 years.

‘The Batman’ (2022)

With The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan completely changed the game, both when it came to Batman movies and to superhero and comic book cinema as a whole. And if there’s any film worthy of competing with it for the title of best Batman film to date, it’s undoubtedly Christopher Reeves‘ The Batman, one of the best thriller movies of the last five years. Yes, it’s primarily a superhero action flick, but its status as a true detective mystery movie is undeniable—and it’s one of the best that we have seen over the course of the 2020s, at that.

With an absolutely perfect Robert Pattinson in the lead role and some of the strongest production values the superhero movie genre has seen in years, The Batman only continues to get better as the years pass. Its many action sequences are absolutely enrapturing, and its take on the Batman mythos and the character himself is as unique as it is riveting; but the best part is that it mainly succeeds as a nail-biting mystery movie. Never before had the big screen seen the Caped Crusader engaging in true detective work this intensely, and the result is one of the most deliriously entertaining blockbusters that the world has seen throughout the last six years.

‘Decision to Leave’ (2022)

Few countries produce mystery thrillers quite as engrossing as those produced in South Korea, and few South Korean filmmakers have ever produced more consistently phenomenal work than Park Chan-wook. One of the hyper-acclaimed auteur’s latest is Decision to Leave, a neo-noir romantic mystery where a married detective takes on a murder investigation that leads him to slowly develop feelings for the murdered man’s wife. The absolute masterpiece that ensues takes full advantage of every second of its nearly two-and-a-half-hour runtime.

Indeed, Decision to Leave is one of the best neo-noir mystery movies of all time, a testament to everything that defines Park as a universally lauded director. The film wears its Alfred Hitchcock influences on its sleeve (Vertigo being an abundantly clear point of comparison), but feels like an entirely unique subversion of usual romance thriller and mystery thriller tropes nonetheless. It’s intelligent, psychologically complex, visually gorgeous, perfectly acted, and all around just another piece of evidence that Park Chan-wook is one of the greatest mystery filmmakers currently working.

‘Monster’ (2023)

Another exceptional auteur who has altogether re-defined Asian cinema as a whole over the course of the 21st century is Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, whose coming-of-age psychological drama and mystery thriller Monster is the only mystery movie from the 2020s on Letterboxd’s Top 500 highest-rated movies for a reason. All in all, it’s one of the only true thriller masterpieces from the 2020s, the sort that only a master like Kore-eda could have possibly crafted.

Absolutely perfect for those who love mystery movies that are as twisty as possible, Monster toys around with and cleverly subverts audience expectations in order to deliver a story all about the toxicity of prejudice and judgments. Structured much like Akira Kurosawa‘s Rashomon, it’s a cinematic study of truth itself, and though that may sound like an idea too ambitious for any director to execute satisfyingly, Kore-eda is no normal director. Winner of the Best Screenplay award at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, this absolutely timeless masterpiece is not only one of the most thematically complex mystery movies of the last six years, but downright one of the best movies of the 2020s in general, regardless of genre.

‘It Was Just An Accident’ (2025)

Powerhouse films delivered by powerhouse Asian filmmakers have been in no kind of short supply over the course of the last six years, as proven by the Palme d’Or winner It Was Just An Accident by Jafar Panahi, one of the greatest Iranian filmmakers in history. Panahi, since he was under an official government filmmaking ban, produced the movie in secret using a real shoestring budget and completely bare-bones filmmaking techniques. It’s a cinematic miracle delivered to humanity straight from the movie gods that the result actually came to see the light of day, because this is truly one of the most stunning artistic achievements that cinema has delivered in decades.

Starting with an instantly engrossing hook and leading all the way to one of the most perfect final movie shots of the 21st century, It Was Just An Accident is a revenge mystery thriller and moral drama all about the devastating psychological toll of the trauma and endless cycle of violence generated by authoritarianism. Despite being full of gorgeous visuals and perfect performances that would have never had you believe this was a low-budget production, It Was Just An Accident‘s low-key nature allows the riveting narrative and its thematic meditations to lead the way.

‘Anatomy of a Fall’ (2023)

Winner of the 2023 Palme d’Or, Justine Triet‘s Anatomy of a Fall is nothing short of one of the best legal thrillers of all time. Far from just being any ol’ legal thriller, though, this enrapturing mystery drama is also about the elusiveness of objective truth, exploring the theme that has always fascinated the legal drama movie genre: How does people’s subjective perception shape reality itself? Brilliantly metatextual and impeccably written (which earned the movie a Best Original Screenplay Academy Award), it’s one of the best international movies of the 2020s so far.

If you’re a mystery movie fan, what’s not to love about Anatomy of a Fall? Its cast is absolutely phenomenal, Sandra Hüller in particular delivering what’s perhaps the best performance the genre has seen this decade; Triet’s direction is perfectly paced and visually stunning; and the ambiguity of the narrative keeps the film consistently nail-bitingly suspenseful from start to finish. For anyone who loves this genre, Anatomy of a Fall should be considered essential viewing.

During an appearance on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast, Rain confirmed the eye-popping reports about her earnings before revealing the safeguards she has put in place to keep herself from blowing through the money.

The 21-year-old said she invests most of what she makes, follows a strict monthly spending limit, and relies on a financial adviser who has been instructed not to give in when she asks for more. Rain has also used her success to support her entire family, including purchasing a home for her parents and allowing them to retire.

Pink is facing backlash after weighing in on Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian appearance during an Ed Sheeran concert. The blowback appears to have turned personal, with detractors mocking her music beyond branding her a “Zionist.”

At the center of the uproar is an Instagram Story in which Pink amplified a group’s condemnation of Macklemore’s performance without adding any comments of her own.

Pink is catching heat online after appearing to side against Macklemore over his pro-Palestinian remarks at an Ed Sheeran concert. The “So What” singer had reshared a post criticizing Macklemore for bringing his pro-Palestinian message to Sheeran’s New Jersey show.

Pink’s repost quickly became fodder for a heated Reddit discussion, where some users branded her a “Zionist” and others went after her music. Addressing the latter, one commenter joked that “Mid is generous.”

Another suggested the only thing worse than being called a Zionist was “someone who listens to Pink’s music by choice.” Still, others defended the Grammy winner, arguing that disagreement with her political stance did not erase her talent or catalog.

The Musician Had Reshared A Scathing Post About Macklemore’s Performance

The post at the center of the controversy came from the advocacy group StopAntisemitism, which took issue with Macklemore’s appearance at Sheeran’s MetLife Stadium show. “Awful,” the group began its Instagram message, arguing that Jewish fans had paid to watch Sheeran rather than be confronted with what it called “anti-Israel propaganda.”

StopAntisemitism criticized Macklemore for wearing a keffiyeh and shouting “Free Palestine” during his set. The organization also objected to his accusation that Israel was committing genocide, calling the claim “false.”

“Concertgoers are owed apologies and refunds,” the group declared before tagging Sheeran and calling the situation “unacceptable.” Pink shared the message to her Instagram Story without comment. She has not publicly explained why she reposted it.

Pink seemingly had something to say about the criticism she has been receiving, though she didn’t address it directly. On September 7, the “Just Give Me a Reason” singer flooded her Instagram Stories with ten memes and quotes that appeared to reflect her mood amid the uproar.

Among them was a message reportedly declaring, “Being liked by everyone is a clown’s job.”

This isn’t the first time Pink’s social media activity has ignited a political firestorm. In September 2025, the singer was slammed over posts she reportedly shared following conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

One post criticized President Donald Trump for ordering flags lowered to half-staff for Kirk, contrasting the gesture with his response to school-shooting victims. Pink also allegedly encouraged followers to make conversations about Kirk “awkward.”

However, a meme described as a “funeral idea” drew particularly fierce criticism. As The Blast reported, TikTok creator RigoStaRR subsequently went viral with a blistering takedown of the singer, accusing her of “glorifying Charlie’s murder” and urging listeners to delete her music.

The Backlash Highlights A Growing Celebrity Dilemma

Pink’s controversy is part of a broader predicament facing celebrities navigating the Israel-Palestine debate: taking a position can carry a steep price, but so does staying silent.

In 2024, the “Blockout” campaign encouraged social media users to block stars they believed had not spoken out enough about Gaza. AP reported that activists hoped cutting engagement would pressure celebrities to take a stand.

Paramount Pictures and Legendary Entertainment have unleashed a new trailer for Street Fighter, giving fans another action-packed look at the upcoming live-action adaptation of Capcom’s legendary fighting franchise.

The trailer debuted as Paramount and Legendary kicked off the film’s global World Warrior Tour in Tokyo, bringing the movie back to the country where the Street Fighter franchise was born.

Set in 1993, Street Fighter follows former friends and fighters Ryu and Ken Masters, played by Andrew Koji and Noah Centineo. After growing apart, the two are pulled back into the fight when Chun-Li, played by Callina Liang, recruits them to compete in the World Warrior Tournament.

What initially appears to be a battle to determine the world’s greatest fighter soon becomes something much more dangerous, with a conspiracy lurking behind the tournament and Ryu and Ken eventually forced to confront both each other and their pasts.

The latest footage continues to embrace the wild personality of the games, mixing martial arts action with the colorful characters and larger-than-life style that have defined Street Fighter for decades.

And there are plenty of familiar faces joining the fight.

The massive cast includes Jason Momoa as Blanka, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i as Akuma, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as Balrog, Vidyut Jammwal as Dhalsim, Orville Peck as Vega, Olivier Richters as Zangief, Hirooki Goto as E. Honda and Mel Jarnson as Cammy. Eric André also appears as tournament announcer Don Sauvage.

Kitao Sakurai directs the film, which is produced by Legendary Pictures in association with Capcom. Sakurai recently explained that his goal was to avoid making an “off-the-shelf” video game movie, instead leaning into martial arts cinema, comedy and the distinct personality of the games.

Street Fighter hits theaters on October 16, 2026.

Madelynn May spent much of her teenage years carrying an oxygen tank and facing a future in which doctors feared she could eventually need a lung transplant. Today, the 23-year-old content creator has built an online audience of more than 750,000 Instagram followers and a career she never expected to have. The journey between those two realities was anything but straightforward.

A severe fungal infection led to pulmonary failure, life support, and years of treatment. Her health problems also disrupted her education, with May saying ninth grade was the last full grade she completed before later obtaining her GED. Years later, regular pulmonary function tests show a very different picture.

“I got very, very lucky,” May told The Blast. “They say my lungs are better than most people my age now.”

May grew up moving frequently around the American South because her father was a Marine. Her teenage years changed dramatically after she developed serious respiratory problems, including recurring pneumonia, ear infections, and sinus infections.

Her condition eventually deteriorated to the point that she suffered pulmonary failure and was placed on life support. “My parents got a call just, ‘Hey, your kid is on life support in our hospital,’” she recalled.

Doctors discovered an Aspergillus fungal infection affecting her respiratory system. May says mould was found in her lungs, ears and sinuses, and she underwent numerous procedures as doctors tried to treat it. For around three years, she relied on supplemental oxygen. “I had to walk around with an oxygen tank,” she said. “My oxygen would drop really low.”

At one stage, May says doctors discussed the possibility that she could eventually need a lung transplant. Instead, her lungs recovered. The experience came at a cost to the ordinary teenage life she might otherwise have had.

Her education was interrupted by her health, and she says she did not complete high school traditionally. May later earned her GED, but much of that period was focused on something more immediate: getting well.

It was during her recovery that social media began to take on a bigger role in May’s life. There was no grand plan to turn herself into a professional creator. Initially, being online simply gave her something enjoyable to focus on after spending so much time dealing with hospitals and treatment. “At first, I used social media as a way to distract myself during recovery,” she said. “It was just something fun.”

May also saw an opportunity to speak about what she had experienced. “I wanted to raise awareness of what I had been through,” she said. “I never imagined it would turn into a career.”

That career did not appear instantly. May began creating short-form content and posting consistently on TikTok, experimenting with different ideas and responding to comments from viewers. Then one remarkably simple video changed her trajectory.

The clip lasted around seven seconds, but it caught the attention of TikTok’s audience and rapidly spread across the platform. “It got like 20 million views,” May said.

The success of the video introduced May to an audience far beyond the one she had previously reached. It also demonstrated how unpredictable building a career online could be. There had been no elaborate production behind her breakthrough and no certainty that the video would perform differently from anything else she had posted.

May had simply continued creating until something connected. That willingness to experiment fits a personality she describes as naturally outspoken. “I’m kind of just a verbal spitfire,” she said. “I say a lot too much.”
Rather than presenting a carefully polished version of herself at all times, May’s personality became part of what people responded to.

Her social media presence continued to grow, eventually developing from the distraction she had found during recovery into her full-time career. It was an outcome she could hardly have planned during the years when her day-to-day concerns revolved around oxygen levels rather than follower counts.

But the numbers only tell part of the story. Her health has improved dramatically from the years when she needed supplemental oxygen and faced uncertainty over the future of her lungs. She continues to undergo regular pulmonary function tests and says the results have remained positive.

For May, that recovery puts everything that followed into perspective. Social media may have given her an unexpected career, but having the health to pursue it is the part of her story she once had far less reason to take for granted. “I got very, very lucky,” she said.
