Rick And Morty Turned A Community Episode Into Its Most Shockingly Heartfelt Story

Rick and Morty is one of those shows that even if you’ve never seen a single episode, you’ve seen the memes: Pickle Rick, “20 minute adventure, quick in and out,” “What is my purpose?” It’s a show packed with jokes that range from the absurd to the multilayered, which makes sense since it shares a creator, Dan Harmon, with the equally acclaimed comedy Community.
Harmon explained in an interview with The Independent that Season 4’s “The Old Man and the Seat” was originally a plot for Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) about shy pooping. True to the spirit of the absurd sci-fi series, the original concept ended up attached to a take on Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, featuring one of the cartoon’s most heartfelt and emotional endings to date.
The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Shy Pooper
The Season 4 Rick and Morty episode starts with the reappearance of the butter-passing robot at breakfast, when Rick (voiced by Justin Roiland back then) announces he has to go. Summer (Spencer Grammer) explains to everyone that her grandfather’s a shy pooper, and she’s right. Rick uses his portal gun and works his way to a toilet overlooking a cliff on a picturesque alien world with no other humanoids for hundreds of miles, if not even further. Once he’s done, Rick notices a broken branch, which sets off a manhunt for whoever intruded on his poop sanctuary.
Turns out that an alien named Tony (Jeffrey Wright) found the isolated toilet and started using it, since he’s also a shy pooper. Rick responds in his usual way, by building a giant robotic Rick mech to sit on Tony when he uses the toilet and then putting Tony in a vat of red goo that shows him his ideal version of Heaven (complete with his dead wife). Tony’s shocked, wondering why Rick can build a virtual Heaven but isn’t able to share a toilet?
The question hits Rick like a ton of bricks and succinctly sums up the smartest man in existence. Soon after, Tony dies in a skiing accident from “living his life to the fullest” and Rick goes to use the toilet, revealing he rigged a series of holograms and a speech about how Tony is sitting there, all alone, because no one wants to be around him. It’s not subtle; it’s clearly Rick coming to terms with his own sense of loneliness and how Tony, against all odds, seemed like he legitimately wanted to be his friend. Rick sitting on his toilet, all alone, taunted by his own prank, hits even harder after his loneliness and lack of connection became a major part of the last two seasons.
Rick And Morty Manages To Be Both Very Stupid And Very Smart
“The Old Man and the Seat” wrings the most emotion possible out of a storyline about pooping, but then there’s the other half of the episode. Jerry (Chris Parnell) agrees to develop an app for Rick’s assistant, Glootie (Taika Waititi, no, seriously), which turns out to be a dating app designed to distract the humans while aliens steal Earth’s resources. This is explained by the Monogtron Leader (Sam Neil, and yes, Rick and Morty has surprising stars drop by for cameos) and his Queen (Kathleen Turner, see the prior parentheses), until it all goes crashing down with the addition of a pay wall.
Normally, the thought of a simple pay wall turning a wildly successful app into an instant disaster would be the highlight of an episode, but “The Old Man and the Seat” is all about Rick coming face-to-face with his own loneliness. The B-plot doesn’t matter, even if it has some good moments, notably Summer’s soul mate constantly changing, though it does raise the question of how a shy pooping storyline would have been handled on Community. Dan Harmon could never quite get it to work, but by leaning into Rick’s self-induced loneliness, he managed to turn shy pooping into an episode that was true to the character and revealed new depths to his narcissistic nihilism. Rick and Morty isn’t Shakespeare, but it gets close.

Prince William is sharing some insight into his current mindset just days after uncle Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested for alleged misconduct.
While walking the red carpet at the 2026 British Academy Film Awards on Sunday, February 22, William, 43, explained that he hadn’t watched Hamnet because he needed to be in a calm mood to view it, according to the Daily Mail.
“I need to be in quite a calm state and I am not at the moment. I will save it,” William reportedly said at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London, attending the event alongside his wife, Princess Kate Middleton.
William shared that Kate, 44, watched the film one night prior and had “floods of tears,” according to the outlet. Kate joked that watching Hamnet wasn’t the best idea before attending the BAFTAs for the first time in two years.

The couple’s appearance on Sunday comes days after Andrew was arrested for allegedly engaging in illegal misconduct while serving in public office.

The Thames Valley police department told the BBC that authorities were investigating claims that Andrew shared confidential information with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein while serving as a U.K. trade envoy. (Epstein died by suicide in 2019 in jail while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.)

Andrew was released from police custody without hours of his arrest. Us Weekly learned on Thursday that Kate and William did not plan to release a public statement on the arrest, while King Charles III addressed the scandal.
“I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office,” Charles, 77, said, referring to his brother. “What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities. In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and cooperation.”
The monarch concluded, “Let me state clearly: the law must take its course. As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all.”
In October 2025, Andrew was stripped of his titles over resurfaced associations with Epstein. Andrew was previously accused of sexual assault by Virginia Giuffre after they were allegedly set up by an associate of Epstein’s. Andrew denied the allegations and settled with Giuffre, who died in 2025, out of court for an undisclosed amount.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is detailing the latest challenge in the ongoing search for Savannah Guthrie’s missing mom, Nancy Guthrie.
“Our lab tells us there’s challenges with it,” Nanos told NBC News correspondent Erin McLaughlin in a new sit-down interview on Friday, February 20, detailing how the DNA found inside Nancy’s home is “mixed.”
According to the law enforcement officer, having “mixed” DNA means the sample contains DNA from more than one person, making it difficult to run through national databases.
“The technology is moving so fast and it’s such a frenzy that they think some of this stuff will resolve itself just in a matter of weeks, months or maybe a year,” Nanos continued.`

Authorities confirmed on February 13 that “DNA other than Nancy Guthrie’s and those in close contact to her” was discovered in her Arizona home.
“Investigators are working to identify who it belongs to,” a statement shared with multiple media outlets read at the time. “We are not disclosing where that DNA was located.”
Nancy was first reported missing on February 1 after the 84-year-old failed to meet up with friends to attend a virtual church service. Authorities have not identified a person of interest or suspect in the matriarch’s ongoing disappearance, though investigators did rule out Savannah, her brother Camron, her sister Annie and their family members as possible suspects.

“Not one single person in the family is a suspect,” Nanos told KOLD 12 News on February 16. “So I am telling everyone, effective today, you guys [media] need to knock it off, quit. People are hurting. They are victims. I am saying they are clear. We have cleared them.”
On February 12, the FBI released an official description of a potential subject in the case after security camera footage showed a masked individual attempting to disable Nancy’s front door camera.
The subject is “a male, approximately 5’9’’ – 5’10’’ tall, with an average build. In [a newly-obtained security] video, he is wearing a black, 25-liter ‘Ozark Trail Hiker Pack’ backpack.” Officials confirmed they had received 12,000 tips from the public related to Nancy’s disappearance and were doubling the reward from $50,000 to $100,000 for any information that results in her rescue or recovery.
On Friday, Nanos admitted that the investigation is “not going fast enough.”
“It’s never fast enough for the sheriff,” he said. “I want it like you — come on guys, let’s go, let’s go, let’s find her. But the reality is that I also know that sometimes things take time.”

Despite Nanos admitting that there are “no names” authorities are currently looking into in connection with Nancy’s disappearance, he believes that they’re “getting closer” to finding her and her alleged kidnappers.
“In terms of leads and working and getting out there, I think that [the investigation] is still growing, yeah,” he explained. “I think we’re getting closer to identifying some of the other articles, not just that backpack — like the shoes, the pants, the shirt or jacket.”

Polish Olympic speed skater Kamila Sellier is sending a positive message to American Kristen Santos-Griswold after Santos-Griswold accidentally cut Sellier’s face with her blade during a race at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
“Hi everyone, it has come to my attention that @kristensantos has been receiving a lot of messages blaming her for the accident. I kindly ask you not to place any blame on her,” Sellier, 25, posted via her Instagram story on Sunday, February 22. “What happened was not anyone’s fault. This is the nature of our sport — it carries inherent risks, and I am fully aware of them every time I step onto the ice.”
She continued, “Please remember that accidents can happen, and no one intended for this to occur. Let’s support one another instead of pointing fingers. Let’s choose kindness instead of hate.”
The accident occurred during the women’s 1500m event on Friday, February 20, when Sellier collided with Santos-Griswold, 31, on the ice. As the two crashed, Santos-Griswold’s blade slashed Sellier’s eye in a scary moment that turned bloody.
After receiving medical treatment, Sellier was taken off the ice on a stretcher. The athlete gave a thumbs-up to the stunned crowd on the way out.
Santos-Griswold was penalized for an illegal lane pass that contributed to the accident, eliminating her from the competition.
“@kristensantos I’m sending you lots of love and hugs,” Sellier posted on Sunday. “I know it’s not easy time for you as well.”

Santos-Griswold responded to Sellier’s message on her own Instagram account, reposting Sellier’s letter and thanking her for her kind words.
“Kamila, your kindness and strength mean more than I can put into words,” Santos-Griswold wrote. “The moment I realized she sustained a cut to the face from my blade, I went directly to her to check in. That’s the kind of respect we have for each other as competitors and as people. I would never intentionally put her in harm’s way, and I’m so grateful for her kindness and understanding.”
She continued, “Short track is fast and unpredictable. We all know the risks every time we step onto the ice. Thank you for reminding everyone of that and for choosing grace in a tough situation.”
The American finished her statement by wishing Sellier a speedy recovery.

As authorities in Mexico combat the narco gangs terrorizing Puerto Vallarta and other parts of the country, the citizens — and pets — are left running for cover.
In a new video shared online, a dog is seen running for its life as blistering rounds of gunshots ring out overhead.

As we reported … the leader of the notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, was slain by army forces Sunday, unleashing a retaliatory strike from the violent crime outfit.
The US State Department reportedly advised American tourists to shelter in place, and Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro issued a warning on X, saying, “We reiterate the recommendation to avoid leaving your homes. The clashes are occurring in several federal entities.”
Panic also spread at Guadalajara International Airport, where massive evacuations were seen after reported gunfire broke out there as well.
According to The New York Times, El Mencho was regarded as one of Mexico’s most violent criminals. He reportedly gained more prominence after the capture of Joaquin “El Chapa” Guzman.

Kate Hudson is insisting that she did not grow up as privileged as people might think, despite being the daughter of Hollywood star Goldie Hawn and musician Bill Hudson.
The actress claimed during a recent podcast appearance that her parents never handed anything to her or her brother, Oliver.
According to Kate Hudson, unlike the kids she saw in Los Angeles in her younger years, she didn’t “coast by” with parents who assisted them with “everything.”

Kate Hudson has opened up about growing up amid Hollywood privilege while being raised by parents who valued hard work over entitlement.
Though her biological father is musician Bill Hudson, who was married to Goldie Hawn from 1976 to 1982, the actress and her brother Oliver were largely raised by Hawn and her long-time partner Kurt Russell, 74. Hudson has often described Russell as the father figure in her life.
On a recent episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Hudson reflected on her upbringing, recalling how her parents were firm about one principle: nothing would be handed to her.
“I grew up in L.A., where I saw kids coast by with parents who gave them everything,” she said, per Fox News Digital. “And I had the opposite parents.”

“We were clearly privileged kids,” she admitted, “but I do think that my parents were so adamant about how none of it belonged to us, like that we didn’t earn it, that in order to get a life like the one we were living, we had to earn it ourselves.”
“That it would never be available to us unless we had the same kind of work ethic,” Hudson added.

Returning to Los Angeles for high school after her family moved to the outskirts of Aspen, Colorado, when she was young, Hudson attended the exclusive Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences in Santa Monica.
At her school, she saw the stark contrast between her upbringing and that of some of her peers.
The actress remembered classmates receiving luxury cars and gifts, while her parents emphasized discipline and effort over material rewards.
“You grow up, and you see kids get cars that you’re like, whoa. We were the kids — and we’re privileged — and we’re like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe their parents bought them a new car,” she recalled.

Both Hudson and Oliver eventually followed careers in acting, with the “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” actress admitting she took what her parents taught her “to heart.”
“For me, I really took that to heart. I was like, ‘No, I can’t — I will never rely on my parents,’” she said.
The actress continued, “And that was my big thing. I will never take a job because of them. I won’t. I don’t want anybody knowing they’re my parents. When I first started, I was so happy my last name was Hudson. It was really, really important to me.”
Hudson credits her parents for instilling a strong work ethic that shaped her career. “If you really want to do this, if you really want to act, you have to put in the discipline,” she reflected.

I only want your happiness.’ Like, if this was the way it happened for him to find his person to go on the show, get married, and then find his person this way, then it was meant to be,” Nist told Us.

Gerry said he took Lana to a restaurant on their first date in March and that they’ve been inseparable since. In an interview with TMZ the following month, he confirmed she’s met his kids and pickleball pals while he’s met a couple of her kids and her parents.

Gerry revealed he was dating someone new on an episode of the “Bachelor Happy Hour” podcast.
“I am dating someone,” he said. “I think at this point it’s going well. But I don’t want to say too much and jinx it and I’m trying to respectfully get to a point where there’s an acceptable amount of time from my divorce. Maybe that’s an old fashioned thought — maybe it doesn’t matter as much as I think it does, but to be respectful, I kind of want to slow roll this.”
Gerry said he and the then-unnamed Lana bonded over their children and love of travel.
“The person I’m dating will say, ‘Do you want to go do?’ And before she gets out the rest of the sentence I will say, ‘Yes,’” Turner said, noting that he was instantly attracted to her.
“I hate to say it because I know I’m going to get baseballs thrown at me. It was almost the first time I saw her. It was the look that she gave me. It was like, all of a sudden, I was consumed by this look and I had this actual physical feeling and I pushed it off. I go, ‘That was silly, that’s ridiculous.’ And with every encounter that feeling has instantly come back with her look and it’s like, ‘Damn, this is pretty awesome,’” he said.
