MONDAY: Refresh for chart and more analysis ….Mostly everything is up this morning and everything is higher with the overall marketplace now coming in at around $146M. Outside of the Avengers years when the last weekend of April did $402M in 2019 and $313.9M in 2018, this is the fourth best result for the last frame of the month behind 2011 when Universal’s Fast Five drove the Friday-Sunday period to $158M. Everyone is excited. We caught up with AMC CEO Adam Aron last night at the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award for Francis Ford Coppola and he’s over the moon about how turnstiles are clicking. There’s a sense out there that the box office is finally on a roll. The trick is, major studios, not having us lapse back into famine. When Marvel Studios/Disney’s Thunderbolts* hit NRG tracking three weeks ago, it was forecasted at $70M. Word is that it’s better than Captain America: Brave New World. Given this momentum for moviegoing right now, it only makes sense that projections on the MCU bad boys and girls superhero movie is significantly higher. That pic opens on Friday.

Warner Bros execs are so wowed, they’re stopping by LA multiplexes throughout the weekend to observe the jawdropping audience reactions from filled auditoriums for the phenomenon that is Sinners, that movie now at a massive $45M second weekend, -6%, a magnificent hold for a R-rated horror movie up there with Heart Eyes (+19%) and Get Out (-15%). As we told you in the previous update, this is due to the broadening audience for the movie beyond its horror and male demos. Imax screens contributed $10.25M in weekend 2 repping close to 23% of the pic’s second frame and raising its Imax running total in U.S./Canada to $25.3M (21% of Sinners‘ domestic B.O. so far).

Warners/Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie is also higher with a fourth hearty weekend of $22.7M (-44%) in 4th place (a result that’s on par with the fourth weekend of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story — just to give you some perspective on the continuing power of the feature take of the Mojang game).

Disney’s 20th re-release of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith – Episode III has forced pulled into second place with $25.2M, putting a slight choke hold on Amazon MGM Studios’ The Accountant 2 with $24.4M in third. Again, nobody saw this coming in regards to Accountant 2 penciling into third place, but competition — it’s a good thing. That weekend debut is $300K lighter than the 2016 original, but robust still for a sequel to a crime thriller and higher than the run of the mill Jason Statham movie. Revenge of the Sith counts a lifetime cume of $405.2M.

Sony Screen Gems’ David F. Sandberg directed Until Dawn horror movie is coming in at $8M, which has largely been in the range of most myriad horror films this year (high single digits to low double) outside of Sinners and NEON’s The Monkey ($14M).

4DX, which is one type of PLF, is reporting a noteworthy take for Revenge of the Sith with $775K and per screen of $15K, becoming the highest-grossing catalog re-release in 4DX history. The movie has the second best opening for a Star Wars movie in 4DX since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ($969K).

SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Typically, the last weekend of April is a depressed one before a Marvel Cinematic Universe takes up all the oxygen at the start of summer, but not this year. Note, this is outside 2018 and 2019 when the Avengers movies opened. Teed off by Warners Bros’ sublime second weekend of Sinners at $42M ($13M second Friday) with a big potential for upside, we’re looking at a $139M+ marketplace for all movies (+117% from same frame a year ago and +1% from the big $136.9M Easter holiday weekend), which is a high for an April final frame post Covid. Global currently stands at $127.5M for the $90M net period vampire movie.

At this point in time, Sinners owns the second-best second weekend for an R-rated horror movie after It‘s $60.1M 3-day back in September 2017. It’s the third best second weekend for Ryan Coogler after Black Panther ($111.6M) and Wakanda Forever ($66.4M). Sinners also has the second-best hold for an R-rated horror movie at -13% after Heart Eyes (+19%) and ahead of Get Out (-15%).

The Sinners audience is broadening, swinging from 43% female in weekend one to 56% female this weekend with a rise in the under 25 set jumping from 20% last weekend to 34%. Diversity demos for week 2 are Black moviegoers at 43% (vs. 49% in weekend one), 25% Caucasian (vs. 27%), Latino and Hispanic at 17% (up from 14% last weekend), and Asian American moviegoers at 11% (up from 6% a week ago). In addition, the Screen Engine/Comscore PostTrak positivity score upticked to 96% positive (from 92%) with definite recommend still strong at 81%. Imax is, natch, still a driver with PLFs shared with Amazon MGM Studio’s Accountant 2. Sinners continues to play excellent across the country with the South overindexing. Warner Bros can relish A Minecraft Movie‘s fourth weekend coming in at $20M ($5.1M Friday). The Burbank lot is dominating 44% of this weekend’s B.O. Whatever you’re doing over there, Warner Bros, to keep moviegoing alive, whether it’s Reiki or a rain dance — keep doing it.

Jon Bernthal and Ben Affleck look at each other in a still from 'The Accountant 2'.

Amazon MGM Studios

Amazon MGM Studios’ The Accountant 2 with a $9.4M Friday (including previews) is currently headed for an opening that’s just north of the original at $25M. The word around the campfire before opening was that Sinners would tear up Accountant 2‘s ledgers this weekend at the box office, that there would be a clash of demos. Not the case: Sinners weekend 2 is heavy female and 59% 18-34 versus Accountant 2‘s 58% guys, 30% 18-34 and very older skewing crowd with 69% over 35 to Sinners‘ 36% over 35 set. The turnout between the two films couldn’t be more different. The Ben Affleck-Jon Bernthal reteam gets an A- CinemaScore next to the A CinemaScore of the first chapter. Solid 68% definite recommend in PostTrak exits. PLFs including Dolby Vision are driving 38% of the weekend with a strong play in South Central, Midwest and the West. Harkins Estrella Falls (AZ) is the top multiplex so far in the nation for the pic at $28K. It’s a solid result on its own for the Affleck film, especially for a sequel to a movie nine years ago. Some might knock the opening here in regards to the movie’s $80M production cost, but remember Amazon’s yard stick is, if the box office can be recouped from their marketing spend in the end, it’s an investment well worth it. Who knew this movie had a following? Affleck did. Check out our SXSW interview below:

Timing is everything and even though we’ll have to wait until May 2026 for the next Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, for now it’s the 20th anniversary of Revenge of the Sith. The movie arrives in theaters in the wake of the Andor season 2 premiere and last weekend’s Star Wars Celebration, which announced the return of Hayden Christensen to Ahsoka season 2. Outlook for the re-release of Star Wars Episode III is $21M-$23M. As we told you, this is the best re-release opening for a Star Wars movie during the Disney Lucasfilm era, previous reissues typically opening in the high digits. This take for Sith is also higher than the 1997 re-release opening of Return of the Jedi ($16.2M) and possibly Empire Strikes Back ($21.9M). As part of the promos here for the Sith re-release, Christensen did a creative content shot, there was a Fandango ticketing partnership, as well as custom content for the digital push, as well as in-theater eventizing with the actor who plays Anakin Skywalker surprising fans at the El Capitan (the pic’s highest grossing venue at $79K-plus).

The 18-34 demo showed up in a big way at 74% for Sith along with 51% Caucasian, 29% Latino and Hispanic, 6% Black and 8% Asian and 5% Native American/other. The Sith is strong in the Midwest, Mountain and West areas of the country.

Ella Rubin stars in ‘Until Dawn’.

Sony

Screen Gems’ R-rated horror movie Until Dawn gets a C+ CinemaScore, which is resulting in $3.2M on Friday, and $7M-$8M in fifth place. The movie was cheap, and the film clearly intended for counter-programming, however, no doubt the pic’s turnstiles are jammed from Sinners in the marketplace (by the way, Sinners hasn’t gotten in the way of Accountant 2 and Sith finding an audience). PostTrak exits are low at 63% positive, and a 42% definite recommend. With exits like that, even if this horror film had a better date, it’s questionable how much more it would have grossed. Male leaning at 55% with 18-34 showing up at 73%; the biggest demo being 25-34 at 35%. Diversity demos are 43% Caucasian, 27% Hispanic and Latino, 16% Black and 8% Asian. Best areas of play are East, South Central, and Midwest. AMC Burbank has the best gross so far in the U.S. with $10K.

FRIDAY MIDDAY: Distribution execs across town are going nuts about Warner Bros’ Sinners. The conservative estimate is that it lands with a $30M second weekend at 3,347, but don’t be shocked if there’s much more, potentially even a -17% to -26% ease ($35M-$40M) as the demos for the films broadens out well beyond horror fans. Sinners second Friday is $10M so far, -48% from its opening day/previews. On the low end, Sinners propels to $107.5M by Sunday, and it’s close to soaring past Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s second collaboration, Creed ($109.7M).

All of this spells for the best final weekend of April post Covid, besting 2023’s $100.2M when Super Mario Bros was in its fourth frame earning $40.8M. The top five titles only look to clear around $100.5M to $110.5M alone.

Amazon MGM Studios/Artists Equity’s The Accountant 2 is coming in at $9.9M today for a 3-day that looks like $23M at 3,610 theaters, just slightly ahead of the first movie’s debut.

Disney’s 20th anniversary re-release of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith moved its way into third with $10M today, for what could be a $18M-$20M 3-day at 2,775 locations. Episode III opened to $108.4M back in the day in May 2005 and went on to make $380M at the domestic box office. This weekend will get the Hayden Christensen-Ewan McGregor-Samuel L. Jackson movie closer to the four century mark. Disney has 4DX and a handful of PLFs for Sith.

Warner Bros/Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie has $5M today, and a fourth weekend of $18M at 3,841, -55% for a running cume by Sunday of $375.2M.

Sony/Screen Gems’ R-rated Until Dawn at 3,055 sites is seeing around $3M today and has an estimated opening around $7M for the $15M horror production.

FRIDAY AM: Disney’s re-release of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith could upset the box office chart this weekend, the movie banking $3.4M in previews last night ahead of its limited one-week engagement. We had heard the pic, which has had limited promotion, mostly in-theater, based on presales, could do $20M+. Does it force Amazon MGM Studios’ The Accountant 2 out of No. 2?

Meanwhile that Ben Affleck Artists Equity feature did $2.5M from all previews including an April 15 “Tax Day” screening. The sequel is eyeing a $20M+ opening. Comps for Accountant 2 preview wise are Den of Thieves 2 ($1.5M) and the Jason Statham movie The Beekeeper which did $2.4M strictly in Thursday night showtimes. The original Accountant in 2016 did $1.35M in previews before posting a $9M Friday, 3-day of $24.7M. The Accountant 2‘s Rotten Tomatoes reviews stand at 76% certified fresh with the popcorn score at 92%. The Accountant 2 was made for $80M, much higher than your standard meat and potato dude action films like Den of Thieves 2 or Statham’s Beekeeper (both $40M before P&A).

Warner Brothers

Meanwhile, Warner Bros’ Ryan Coogler directed, Michael B. Jordan starring Sinners did $6M yesterday ending its first week with $77.5M, which is higher than the first week of The Conjuring ($61.7M), and significantly higher than the first week of Get Out ($49.8M).

Trafalgar with Sony Music Vision has the re-release of Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII at 2,550 theaters across 64 countries. In North America alone, the concert pic charted $1.29M last night from 654 locations.

Sony

Screen Gems’ R-rated horror time loop film, Until Dawn did $1 million in Thursday night previews that began at 4PM at 2,630 locations. The movie from Shazam! franchise and Annabelle: Creation filmmaker David F. Sandberg is eyeing $8M-$9M off a $15M production cost. Reviews for Until Dawn aren’t horrible at 62% fresh.
