The Sci-Fi Spinoff That Destroyed Our Chance At A Franchise To Rival Star Wars
By Joshua Tyler
| Published

New space science fiction shows rarely catch fire right away. Star Trek was infamously cancelled after three seasons due to low ratings, only to rise from the ashes in rerun syndication. Firefly was cancelled after a few episodes, only to spawn a movie so good it ended up near the top of our list of the best space movies of all time.
But one space series did the impossible. It captured the cultural zeitgeist right away. In the now-forgotten era of binge-watching via post office-mailed Netflix DVDs, it became an obsession for sci-fi fans and normies alike.
That should have been a launching pad for a generational sci-fi franchise to rival Star Wars. Instead, it spawned a spinoff series so disastrous that everything it built evaporated into thin air, leaving behind nothing but the sweat of shirtless wrestlers.
This is Why Caprica Failed.
Battlestar Galactica Finishes On A High
When the reimagined Battlestar Galactica finished in March 2009, it had the two things a franchise needs: audience heat and critical credibility. During its run, episodes of the show aired in theaters to eager packed audiences. It was a watercolor topic of conversation and sucked in even people who weren’t into science fiction.
The final run averaged 2.2M viewers in the U.S., and the finale spiked to ~2.4M, the show’s best number in years. Those may not sound like big numbers, but they were huge for a show airing on SyFy, a basic cable channel people otherwise ignored.

When Battlestar Galactica arrived on DVD, it became an even bigger hit as people bought box sets and binged the show all at once in the pre-streaming era. Battlestar popularized the idea of binge-watching, setting the stage for the streaming future that was to come.
The BSG universe was perfectly poised to go bigger and become the kind of mega-media franchise that lasts for generations. Star Trek turned itself into a mega-franchise after being canceled three seasons in, and here was Battlestar Galactica riding a wave of success that should have made it much easier to propel to the next level.
Instead, the follow-through came in stuttered moves that dispersed attention and trained fans to stop checking in. Only a few short years after its success, Battlestar Galactica was a dead franchise, a once-in-a-generation missed opportunity by SyFy’s parent company, NBCUniversal.
How NBCUniversal Squandered Battlestar Galactica’s Potential With Its Next Show
NBCU/Syfy did produce companion pieces: Razor (2007) during the run and half-hearted DVD-only The Plan (2009) after, but the core “what’s next” arrived as Caprica in 2010.

Ronald D. Moore, the genius solo creator of Battlestar Galactica, only served as a co-creator on Caprica. He shares the title with a man named Remi Aubuchon, who’d previously worked with Moore in the BSG writers’ room. By all accounts, it was Remi, not Moore, who was the real architect of the show. Which may, at least in part, explain why it’s so different.
Set more than fifty years before the events of Battlestar Galactica, Caprica is about how human bureaucracy accidentally invents the society that will lead to its own extinction. Caprica focuses on two families, the Graystones and the Adamas, as cutting-edge technology collides with grief, religion, and ego. It results in the birth of the Cylons. The idea was for it to happen slowly, very slowly, over the course of the show.

In practice, Caprica played out like a soap opera, with few sci-fi elements on screen. The show was creatively ambitious but also tonally totally different.
Caprica was a prequel about corporate intrigue set in a universe where audiences expected gritty space combat. It gave fans something with the Battlestar Galactica name attached to it that bore no resemblance at all to the franchise they loved. Imagine if, after Star Trek was cancelled in the 60s, CBS had decided to follow it up with a Star Trek police procedural set on Earth, and you’ll start to understand what a horrible mistake Caprica was.

Caprica needed patient scheduling and a clear runway to overcome the hurdle of its premise. It didn’t get either. Critics tried to give it a chance, but despite praising its intellect, ultimately they admitted it was unreasonably slow, way too talky, and wildly uneven. Again, basically nothing like the tension-filled world of Battlestar Galactica.
Ratings slid from a mid-season high of 1.6 M to fewer than 900,000 viewers after a hiatus; Syfy then canceled the show and pulled the remaining episodes from its schedule, burning them off months later. Whatever audience was willing to follow learned the wrong lesson: don’t invest.
After Caprica, NBCUniversal Stopped Caring
It was a failure so immediate and extreme that whatever faith there was in BSG evaporated. Still, a last-ditch attempt to salvage things was thrown together.
After Caprica, the series Blood & Chrome was announced, and it sounded like the crowd-pleaser they should have made in the first place. It was to be about young Adama in a Cylon War setting.

Unfortunately, NBCUniversal had already quit on BSG. Rather than a fast series order and a serious investment, the project arrived as a 10-part web series on Machinima in late 2012 and only later as a TV movie in early 2013.
Battlestar Galactica needed a grand Star Trek: The Motion Picture-style blockbuster movie to push it to the next level. NBCUniversal gave it a low-budget web series. Producer David Eick publicly positioned Blood & Chrome as “always meant” for online, but that didn’t make it better; it just made it more insulting.
Ronald Moore Killed His Own Creation
The truth is, much of the fault lies at the feet of Ronald D. Moore. Before you come at me with your pitchforks, let me say that I love Ron Moore. And I loved him long before Battlestar.
Moore was a huge part of the creative force behind the best parts of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and his work is simply incredible. But when he finished Battlestar Galactica, he basically quit on the franchise he’d birthed into being.
He’s admitted he was burned out. Burned out on space stuff. He spent a decade working on Star Trek, then created his own space show, and he just didn’t want to do space sci-fi anymore.

The thing is, that’s what he’s good at, and that’s where his success always was. Nothing he’s done since has come close to reaching the level of quality achieved in Star Trek and BSG. He’s done a lot since then, just none of it in space.
Ron Moore had a once-in-a-generation opportunity, and when BSG finished, he decided he wasn’t going to do anything with it. The result was a show no one wanted in Caprica, followed by the evaporation of everything he’d worked so hard at creating.
He could have been the next Gene Roddenberry, but instead, he’s spent his time since making things like time-travel romance, with no real cultural footprint.
SyFy Gets Turned Into A Wrestling Channel

While all this was unfolding, the channel that launched Battlestar Galactica was repositioning itself. Sci Fi Channel rebranded to Syfy in 2009 and leaned harder into broader-appeal reality/wrestling alongside genre.
Turning your science fiction channel into a wrestling channel was always a bizarre choice. It diluted the sense that “space opera lives here,” right when Galactica fans needed a dependable home for successors. Trade coverage and industry commentary at the time called out the shift, with cancellations clustered around quality scripted sci-fi.
NBCUniversal Throws Ron Moore’s Sci-Fi Universe Away

Universal eventually began announcing Battlestar Galactica feature films. That sounds positive, but it wasn’t. They were all reboots and not continuations of the show. There was one with Bryan Singer attached in 2011, later Francis Lawrence in 2016, then Simon Kinberg in 2020. None of them actually happened.
What had happened was that NBCUniversal had clearly signaled to fans that the once-in-a-generation sci-fi universe Ron Moore spent 10 years building was being thrown in the garbage, and that if BSG ever came back, they’d be starting all over from scratch. Universal did the impossible, producing a hit sci-fi show. And then they decided to erase it and start over rather than continue to grow on that foundation.

Imagine if, instead of giving William Shatner’s Captain Kirk a movie, they’d recast him and redid all the same episodes again. Or instead of introducing a new show set in the same universe, in the form of The Next Generation, Star Trek had wiped the slate clean, created a new sci-fi universe, and slapped the old name on it.
Unfortunately, that’s now standard practice in Hollywood. A practice that accelerated beyond all reason after BSG. That mentality is why there has never been another long-running sci-fi universe like Star Trek or Star Wars, and why there will never be. Battlestar Galactica was perfectly poised to take that trip, but no one at Universal dared to make a real investment.

Canceled Marvel Star Finds New Life In Upcoming Action Flick
By Jennifer Asencio
| Published

Once again, Disney’s loss is Daily Wire’s gain. The House of Mouse famously fired Gina Carano from The Mandalorian, and Daily Wire scooped her up for a movie project that turned into Terror on the Prairie. Now they’re giving new life to actor Jonathan Majors, who was dismissed from numerous projects in 2023, including the role of Kang the Conqueror in the MCU, after being found guilty of assault against his then-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari.
Jonathan Majors’ New Daily Wire Movie

Filming has begun in South Carolina on an unnamed action film said to be a throwback to 80s and 90s teen adventures. Reports are comparing it to Red Dawn or Toy Soldiers. Other cast members in addition to Majors have been announced, including comedian Dave Lucas, soap opera star Savannah Leigh James, and The Pendragon Cycle hero Myles Clohessy. The movie is based on a script by writer-director Kyle Rankin.
Rankin is known for Run Hide Fight, which is a movie about a group of angry high school students who hold their school hostage at gunpoint while a lone classmate risks her life to rescue as many students from them as she can. This new movie will operate on a grander scale, with a group of heroic teens defending their home from an unnamed threat. Given Run Hide Fight as a preview of Rankin’s work, this new movie sounds promising.

This is good news for Majors, who has been blacklisted from making movies after an illustrious career that included Creed III, the award-winning The Last Black Man in San Francisco, and the HBO series Lovecraft Country. After his 2023 conviction, he was sentenced to a year of probation and a domestic violence program, his participation in which earned him the Hollywood Unlocked Impact Awards’ Perseverance Award for his continued efforts to “aspire to inspire.”
Hollywood tends to be unforgiving of certain transgressions, no matter what efforts are made to atone for them. It’s as if people are not allowed to have careers or success if they cross a certain line. Gina Carano was canceled for much less than Majors, by making a tweet on then-Twitter comparing cancel culture to the Holocaust. The recent release of Scream 7 is facing boycotts and negative critics’ reviews, intended to punish the production for firing franchise star Melissa Barrera for making anti-Israel social media posts. Rehabilitation is viewed skeptically by the industry, if it is acknowledged at all.
A Developing Redemption Arc

Jonathan Majors paid his debt to society. His sentence ended in 2025, and he managed to rehabilitate himself in the process. He is even currently happily married. However, the court of public opinion is still trying him so much that Ben Shapiro made a short response video critical of those complaining that Majors has been hired for a movie. The same people who are always preaching that violent criminals should be shown mercy are showing none to a man who has served his entire sentence already.
If Hollywood is going to reject talent over past transgressions, no one should be surprised when that talent goes elsewhere. These days, “elsewhere” seems to be Daily Wire as they build their library of original feature films. It’s funny how an allegedly “far right” studio is more forgiving than an entire “inclusive” industry. Jonathan Majors is the latest benefactor of Daily Wire’s willingness to let artists’ pasts stay in the past.

Harry Styles Has ‘Struggled’ to Discuss Liam Payne’s Death
Harry Styles is speaking in depth about former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne’s death for the first time.
“It’s difficult to lose any friend, but it’s so difficult to lose a friend who is so like you in so many ways,” Styles, 31, told Zane Lowe in a new Apple Music interview, released on Wednesday, March 4. “It’s like, I saw someone with the kindest heart who just wanted to be great.”
He added, “It was a really important moment for me in terms of taking a look at my life and being able to say to myself, ‘OK, what do I want to do with my life? How do I want to live my life?’ And I think the greatest way you can honor your friends who pass away is by living your life to the fullest.”
Payne died in October 2024 at age 31 after falling off the third floor balcony of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Styles admitted with “full transparency” that discussing Payne’s death is something that he struggles with.
“I think there was a period when he passed away where I really struggled with kind of, like, acknowledging how strange it is to have people kind of, like, own part of your grief in a way,” the singer explained. “I have such strong feelings around my friend passing away. Then suddenly being, you know, like, aware of there’s maybe a desire from other people [for] you to convey that in some way, or it means you’re not feeling what you’re feeling or something.”

Styles and Payne were bandmates in One Direction alongside Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik, who left the group in 2015. (The group went on an indefinite hiatus the following year.)
After Payne’s death, the four remaining band members released a joint statement mourning their friend.
“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say,” they shared in October 2024. “But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam.”
Wednesday’s interview is the first time Styles discussed Payne’s death publicly after sharing his own tribute via Instagram.
“I am truly devastated by Liam’s passing,” Styles wrote via Instagram in October 2024 alongside a graphic with the statement. “His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honor to be alongside him as he did it.”
Styles sent love to Payne’s family at the time.
“Liam lived wide open, with his heart on his sleeve, he had an energy for life that was infectious. He was warm, supportive, and incredibly loving,” he added. “The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life. I will miss him always, my lovely friend.”

What Have Authorities Accused Wendy And Eddie Osefo Of Doing?
A previous report from The Blast reveals that Wendy and Edie were charged with various counts of fraud after authorities accused them of reporting a fake burglary to secure payments from insurance companies.
According to authorities, the Bravo veterans told law enforcement that someone broke into their Maryland home and stole several high-value items, including designer purses and wallets. Throughout their investigation, however, authorities reportedly found that several of the items the pair claimed were missing had already been returned to stores for full refunds.

Their investigation also turned up alleged communication from Eddie to Wendy, including an email in which he reportedly asked the “RHOP” star to name other “high-value items we can add to this inventory list,” stating that his intention was to “get the total to exceed $423,000,” which was the policy’s maximum allowance.
During a previous appearance on the “Gabbing with Gib” podcast, Wendy opened up about the alleged burglary, saying the encounter left her feeling “violated.” She also got emotional while recalling the reported burglary because of her children.

Wendy Osefo Opened Up About The Reported Burglary And Her Arrest During The ‘RHOP’ Reunion

At the “RHOP” season 10 reunion, Wendy discussed her legal woes with Andy Cohen and recounted the alleged burglary. During their conversation, Wendy shared that her daughter was the one who initially discovered that something had gone wrong.
“That was in 2024. Fastforward to October 9, 2025, we get a knock on the door. I’m sleeping, Eddie wakes me up and says, ‘baby, the police are down here,’” Wendy explained.
Wendy’s admission garnered a sharp response from her co-stars, specifically Karen Huger, who told her to “shut the f-ck up.”
“I just told you to shut the f-ck up,” Huger said. “I took it out of context because I didn’t want you to do what you just did. I wouldn’t have answered anything on this stage today.”
Huger Has Words Of Advice For Wendy
Huger, who was released from prison in September 2025, continued, warning Wendy that speaking too much could come back to bite her.
“You’re talking too much, Wendy. I’m begging you to stop talking. I do not want you to go to jail,” Huger said. “Take it from the Karen you used to like, how about that? Because when you talk, they watch, OK? They hear you. And so, I would have said, ‘Respectfully, Andy, I can’t answer those questions right now.’”

Little KJ is already turning heads in the ring, and with grandpa Floyd Mayweather’s legendary legacy behind him, fans are buzzing that he might be following in those famous footsteps. Over the weekend, Melissia Rene gave everyone a peek at their grandson showing off his skills. And let’s just say, the hype is real.

Boxing Runs In The Family
In the adorable clip, KJ is seen rocking a T-shirt, basketball shorts, dark Adidas sneakers paired with white socks, and his hair pulled up into a bun. The young champ had his gloves on and was getting straight to it, throwing punches at what appeared to be a trainer kneeling in front of him and catching every hit.
Additionally, the setting looked like Floyd Mayweather’s personal training space, with “The Money Team” banners seen hanging across the gym — a nod to Floyd’s iconic brand and legacy in boxing. The video even featured text that read, “WHEN PAPA TRAINS KJ TRAINS” along with a red heart, happy tears emoji, and a boxing glove emoji — making it clear that boxing is truly a family affair. If this is any indication, KJ is already getting an early start under the watchful eye of his famous granddad. Period!
Roomies Have Parlays And Predictions Coming
It didn’t take long before folks jumped straight into The Shade Room Teens’ Instagram comment section. Some Roomies were already crowning KJ as a future GOAT, saying he’s clearly on the path to greatness. While a few others joked that they already know they don’t want any smoke with him. And of course, you already know several commenters laughed that it’s time to start putting their parlays together now — ‘cause baby, they see the legacy in the making!

While Instagram user @deluxegraphicsllc wrote, “Those kids in his pre k class better watch out lol 😂”
Finally, Instagram user @shays111213 commented, “I don’t even wanna fight him 😂”
KJ’s Energy Can’t Be Contained
Back in January, Yaya Mayweather took to X to share some real talk about her son, KJ. “I be feeling bad for my baby because the kids he be around don’t understand him,” she wrote. “He likes roughhousing and the kids he be around don’t be with that s**t… he need to be around his kind or around some kids that’s a little bit older.” Clearly, Yaya is all about making sure KJ gets the right kind of playmates who match his energy and spirit.
Her post came roughly a week after KJ celebrated his fifth birthday in true superstar fashion. As previously reported, the basketball-themed party went down at a Shoot 360 club, with grandparents Floyd Mayweather and Melissa Rene on deck to celebrate the little champ’s big day. Furthermore, they proved that even from the start, KJ’s life is all about family, fun, and a little competitive edge.

Bad Bunny’s Halftime Show Breaks New Record
Bad Bunny‘s Super Bowl Halftime Show not only delivered a record-breaking spectacle on stage but also shattered digital viewership numbers.
The 31-year-old superstar continues to give the public plenty to talk about, dominating headlines during his performance and long after the stage lights fade.
While critics dissect his lyrics and stage delivery, he remains unfazed, pressing forward as he prepares to take on a new film role.

Bad Bunny Sets Record for Most-Watched Super Bowl Halftime Show
In an announcement made by Roc Nation on X, it was revealed that the global superstar made a striking impression with his 2026 halftime performance, breaking an all-time record.
The show garnered 4.175 billion views across global and US broadcast, YouTube, and digital properties within 24 hours — a feat never achieved before.
The feat may not come as a surprise to many. The high-energy spectacle featured celebrity cameos from Cardi B, Ricky Martin, and Lady Gaga, among others. In a moment that stunned audiences, he even incorporated a real-life wedding ceremony between songs, elevating the performance beyond a typical halftime set.
Following the announcement, fans quickly flooded social media with reactions. One user wrote, “But MAGA said nobody was going to watch it. What happened???”

Another celebrated the milestone, adding, “This is why music has no borders. Representation, energy, and pure talent. ¡Vamos!”
Others insisted the global turnout was inevitable. “We ain’t surprised. The world was obviously watching the most global Super Bowl ever!” one fan commented. Another joked, “A few hundred more than Kid Rock’s MAGA halftime show.”
Still, skeptics questioned the figures, with one claiming, “Numbers dramatically exaggerated by Jay Z and RocNation, who is shocked by this,” while another added, “You can make up any number you want and pretend it’s real. No one is buying it.”

Bathroom Visits Drop During Bad Bunny’s Half-Time Performance

Beyond viewership numbers, the performance reportedly made an unexpected impact on everyday life.
According to The Blast, NYC Water shared data revealing how glued viewers were to their screens during the set, showing a sharp contrast between bathroom usage during the show and immediately afterward.
“NYC saw a significant reduction in water usage throughout the five boroughs during the Super Bowl’s #BadBunny halftime show yesterday,” the agency wrote, explaining that after the performance ended, there was a spike in usage of about 761,719 toilets.
The moment further underscored how captivated audiences were, staying put until the final note before making a move.

Bad Bunny Breaks Barriers With Sign Language Representation

The halftime spectacle proved to be more than just a musical milestone. It also marked a significant win for deaf advocacy.
Bad Bunny, who previously made history as the first predominantly Spanish-language headliner, reached another breakthrough when a Puerto Rican Sign Language (LSPR) interpreter provided access to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, directly honoring the linguistic rights of Puerto Rico’s Deaf population.
As reported by The Blast, American Sign Language (ASL) has long been the standard at major events. However, for the 220,000 deaf or hard-of-hearing residents of Puerto Rico, ASL is not always used.

Linguistic experts have categorized LSPR as an endangered language, making advocacy for its inclusion a fight for cultural preservation. Seeing it performed on one of the world’s biggest stages highlighted the importance of maintaining that heritage.
MAGA Critics Bad Bunny’s Performance On Stage

Despite the accolades, backlash followed swiftly from conservative figures. A Republican congressman reportedly called for a formal congressional inquiry into the NFL and NBC regarding their involvement in the performance.
He alleged that the organizations had prior knowledge of what he described as an “indecent broadcast.”
According to The Blast, he argued that America’s culture “will not be mocked without consequences,” claiming children were exposed to “explicit displays of gay sexual acts, women gyrating provocatively, and Bad Bunny shamelessly grabbing his crotch while dry-humping the air.”
He further criticized the rapper’s lyrics, alleging they promoted immoral behavior and should not have aired on national television.

Bad Bunny Set to Expand Career Beyond Music

Amid the controversy, Bad Bunny appears focused on growth rather than noise. The superstar is set to take on his first leading role in a feature film, “Porto Rico,” the directorial debut of fellow Puerto Rican artist Residente.
The historical drama will see Bad Bunny step into the lead role alongside Hollywood heavyweights such as Edward Norton, Javier Bardem, and Viggo Mortensen.
As The Blast reported, both Bad Bunny and Residente share a fierce dedication to Puerto Rico and the causes they champion, making the collaboration a culturally resonant one.

Why Kim Kardashian, Lewis Hamilton Are Taking Romance ‘Slow’
Kim Kardashian and Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton are in no rush to put the pedal to the medal when it comes to their relationship.
“They both had a break in their schedules and decided to take another trip to spend more time together and really get to know each other,” a source exclusively told Us Weekly on Tuesday, March 3, after the pair were spotted together in Arizona earlier this week. “It’s going well, and Kim has been genuinely enjoying her time with Lewis.”
The source noted that Kardashian, 45, is “taking it slow” with Hamilton, 41, in part because he is “the first person she’s been romantically involved with in a long time.” (Following her 2021 split from ex-husband Kanye West, Kardashian dated Pete Davidson from 2021 to 2022 and Odell Beckham Jr. from 2023 to 2024.)
“[Kardashian and Hamilton] are keeping things casual and seeing where it leads,” the source added. “She’s learned that too much pressure is usually when things fall apart.”
Though Kardashian and West’s four children — North, 12, Saint, 10, Chicago, 8, and Psalm, 6 — haven’t met Hamilton yet, the source says the Skims founder is “open” to the idea of introducing them to her new beau.
“Lewis is such a great guy and has really been courting her and treating her right. He’s been making all the plans and making sure she is taken care of,” the source continued. “Everyone around her thinks it’s really sweet and what she deserves. Kim has had such a relaxed aura recently in all aspects of her life. Her mindset has totally changed. She’s not forcing anything, just letting it unfold naturally.”
Us reached out to representatives for Kardashian and Hamilton for comment.

Kardashian and Hamilton are seemingly longtime friends, as the two have been spotted together at various events since 2014. Romance rumors later swirled in January when the two were seen at the luxury hotel and country club Estelle Manor in Oxfordshire, England, followed by a hotel in Paris in early February. Kardashian and Hamilton also sat together at Super Bowl LX that same month.
An insider exclusively told Us on February 3 that Kardashian and Lewis had gone on “a few dates recently,” but things are just “casual” between them.
“She has felt ready to put herself back out there recently,” the insider said.
In January, Kardashian opened up about her dating life as a single mom.
“I just feel like my kids need me. It’s really hard when I have to put them to bed every night. I get them up. I take them to school. I get them ready. They sleep in my bed,” she explained on sister Khloé Kardashian’s “Khloé in Wonderland” podcast. “I haven’t had time [to date] — and I’m OK with that. I thought, ‘You know what? I’m going to be studying. I won’t have time. When I’m done, I’ll open myself up.’ I opened myself up. But it’s just, I haven’t found anyone. And that’s OK.”

In Just 2 Minutes, ABC’s Latest Franchise Crossover Shattered Reality TV Rules With a Hardcore Twist
If HGTV feels different lately, you’re not imagining it. The network’s newest reality competition series is flipping the script on the genre’s standard playbook. While most competition shows follow a familiar rhythm — challenge, then elimination — Bachelor Mansion Takeover upended expectations with a twist no one saw coming: an elimination in the middle of a challenge.
In the first challenge, the bachelors and bachelorettes split up into two teams to renovate the contestant quarters. As the teams were hard at work, they received a note, in very The Bachelor fashion, that they would have a random vote out in the middle of the challenge. Why? No one really knows. The ridiculous twist was simply cruel, but proved that Bachelor Mansion Takeover is going to raise the stakes for the 12 contestants vying for the $100,000 cash prize.
‘Bachelor Mansion Takeover’ Wiped Out Two Contestants For No Reason
The premise of the series is to give the iconic abode a much-needed makeover through the assistance of the individuals who lived there. For HGTV fans unfamiliar with The Bachelor and its spin-offs, it’s a fun design series. For Bachelor Nation loyalists, it’s drama. And in the first episode, the series really leaned deep into the latter. When the two teams, split up by gender, learned of the mid-challenge vote-out twist, they were thrown for a loop. And as reality show fans know, without clear guidelines, the first vote can set the tone for the entire season.
As each contestant went into the voting confessional, they shared their reasoning. Some were for team vibes, others were personal vendettas. The women, who were mostly filled up with younger bachelorettes, voted out The Golden Bachelor’s Sandra Mason. Their reasoning was that they didn’t vibe with her, though she struggled to express her opinion with the louder voices during the design process. Meanwhile, the men voted out The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise star Jeremy Simon. Since the final tally resulted in a tie, Dean Bell, who had the Golden Hammer of immunity, broke the tie, keeping Chris Stallworth of The Golden Bachelorette. Unlike the women, the age discrepancy didn’t factor into the hivemind’s thinking. Dean, who many would have liked to vote out for his blue ceiling decision in the Santorini room, kept the older contestant because of his experience and for literally building their bunk beds.
At first, you wondered whether the vote-out would lead to the contestants swapping teams, something we’ve seen before on other shows. Not here. Upon judges Tayshia Adams and Tyler Cameron sending off Jeremy and Sandra with little fanfare, everyone proceeded with the challenge as if nothing had happened. They immediately left Bachelor Mansion, along with the losing team’s…psyche! It was a “to be continued” cliffhanger— yet another format-busting moment. With the lack of elimination at the end of the episode, it felt as if the mid-challenge vote-out was meant to satisfy the need for an elimination.
Reality TV Shows’ Non-Traditional Eliminations Must Be Warranted
This mid-challenge elimination was cruel and uncalled-for. It didn’t add any dramatic stakes, only opened a world of questions. There was no shakeup, for better or worse, that altered the remainder of the challenge. The twist seemed to just come for the sake of a twist. Rarely do competition series stray from the challenge-then-elimination format, and if they do, it has purpose. Shows like The Challenge and Big Brother have introduced early eliminations that are tied to the end of an actual challenge before the main game begins. This was simply cruel. There was no merit in decision-making. Typically, you have judges’ critiques to justify voting someone out. Instead, it was all about a gut instinct. Jeremy’s elimination had some logical justification. Sandra, well, she was robbed of her spot simply because of her age. And that is not a good precedent to set.
One of the only prominent instances of a pre-challenge elimination occurred way back in Survivor: Palau in 2004. In one of the most shocking moments in theold-school era of Survivor, Jonathan Libby and Wanda Shirk were not drafted onto a tribe and were sent home immediately. The twist worked because of how and when it played out. They had time on the beach to mesh with the other castaways, justifying the decision not to pick them. Further, Survivor had earned this twist as it had been running long enough to justify it. This is the beginning of Bachelor Mansion Takeover. They needed to keep things simple.
HGTV has a very antiquated-feeling reality show on its hands, which is really exciting for us diehard day-one reality show lovers. But if they continue with random twists that undermine the series’ integrity, it might turn fans off quite quickly. Especially Bachelor Nation fans who are not used to this type of treatment.
Bachelor Mansion Takeover airs Mondays at 8:00 pm on HGTV. All episodes are available to stream on HBO Max.

Bernice Burgos shared footage on TikTok from her visit with Dr. Gavami. The pair broke their plan to reshape her derriere and add some body contouring. Dr Gavami then walked Bernice through the process, saying he wanted to give her a “legging-tight look without the leggings. To get it done, he planned to use Quantum RF, a minimally invasive treatment that uses controlled radio frequency energy to tighten and improve its contour. Per Complex, the procedure heats the deeper layers of your skin to fire up collagen and elastin while breaking down fat cells, which your lymphatic system then helps flush out. Common areas for this procedure are usually the abs, thighs, and arms. The best part? No big cuts, no long downtime, making the healing process a little easier than typical surgical procedures.
